Chessie Action

Here are two images made in Mitchell, Indiana, on the former Ohio & Mississippi. The first train (which sports a locomotive from the three principle roads that made up the Chessie System) is eastbound while the second is headed west. The first train is seen west of the crossing with the Monon (in the very center of town) while the second is seen east, near the yard there.

Fall

What a garish and excessive season is the Fall. Were there a god, all knowing and all powerful, surely they would have some sense of restraint, some appreciation for subtlety. Look at these Western Maryland woods! These leaves, once rich in the comforting tones of verdurous growth and natural vitality, now bleed to the very edges of every corner in the extremes of each color of the spectrum. Every color, that is, but the one perfect color, by its inherent dignity reserved for the firmament and the purest, most ancient ice alone, shared grudgingly as reflection only with the surface of the filthier, flowing waters that slide over earth and stone. Saxe alone commands a beauty that even Fall isn’t foolish enough to touch. Among the trees, though, taste and balance are clearly the first fruits to fall dead from their branches when romantic Earth again lingers too long in Night’s company and lets the chill of the endless void slip in from between the stars. These colors, each beautiful when beheld in a healthy proportion and flattering context, now gush forth in this repulsive deluge, drowning everything green and proper in one kaleidoscopic and unbearably immodest surge. I came to these woods with no expectations for the trees, but as a necessary consequence of my employment. Unlike these unfathomable tourists of arboreal excess who descend upon these hills like a plague of fat, pale flies each autumn, I am compelled to be here by necessity. I had no intentions regarding these woods but the unarticulated expectation that they remain indifferent to me. Yet, I feel utterly molested and defiled. Driving home, my duties finally fulfilled, I cannot even squint against this varicolored ubiquity, as the reduction in specific detail only invites the mind to suppose increasingly bizarre explanations for the passing grotesqueries on either side of my route. “Look,” it insists, “we’re driving across the surface of a bowl of Fruity Pebbles!” It sickens me to my core. Only by screaming the details of my medium and long term to-do lists at the very top of my lungs, screaming until I taste iron behind my tongue and tears blur the tilting asphalt flying beneath me, do I manage to drive safely home instead of swerving into the cool, neutral tones of a concrete abutment at 96 miles per hour.
