First Week into Co-Op
Tumblr media
Was excited for the fit..
And absolutely loved it with the ID and WestJet tie.
The First Day, 11 January was my training day. It was all about introduction to the GSA and GSLs and then we went for an awesome airport tour. Learned various spots at terminal 3 and till the tour lasted, I was dying to sit and relax because I had my heels and it was giving me tremendous pain. Anyway, got a break and rejuvenated and went for our spot to experience what it will be like working at kiosks, helped several passengers, and then it was time for our learning through ppts, and ended the day perfectly with lot of enthusiasm.
Tumblr media
All set for placement day 1, I was excited and felt like a WestJetter. It was new and exciting to help passengers at kiosks. The position was changing me to be a helpful person and I absolutely loved the feeling to assist when someone struggles to get their boarding pass or bag tags at kiosks.
Tumblr media
By the time, I learned several things and the most fun thing is directing passengers when asking about airline counters other than WestJet. I also got to know about the issue of accepting bags from connecting flights at baggage drop-off. It was because the boarding pass was from a different airline and the machines won't accept those so we would drop it at the other side. Eventually, it became my favorite part during the whole shift, as this was the time I am properly doing all the things on my own which was checking destination, ETD and flight no. to direct them to their gates.
I explained this procedure to two of my classmates in my last shift.
Tumblr media
Overall, loving the journey of being a WestJetter, and also I learned the basics of printing boarding passes and adding baggage and baggage tags at check-in counters. I usually observe this when it is not busy at the kiosks. The process seems interesting as I had a course where we use to book flights and add the services at Amadeus and it was my favorite course.

Temperatures rising, but issues at Calgary airport continue
WestJet is warning customers that there could be further difficulties traveling as temperatures in Calgary begin to rise out of an extreme cold warning.
Environment and Climate Change Canada forecasts showed Saturday morning that temperatures were hovering around -16 C before 9 a.m. and were expected to rise as high as -1 C during the day. The mild cold comes after several days of lows below -30 C and extreme cold warnings being placed over Calgary and most of Alberta.
While temperatures in Alberta’s largest city improve, several weather alerts remain in surrounding areas. There is a special weather statement in effect for the potential for freezing rain from Red Deer to Cypress Hills, including the regions around Medicine Hat and Drumheller. “Travel in these regions will likely become difficult as freezing rain will cause untreated surfaces to become slippery. Snow and blowing snow will reduce visibility into Sunday morning,” reads Environment Canada’s statement online.
Much of southwestern Alberta is under a wind warning. Canmore and Kananaskis are affected, as is much of the province to the south of Calgary, including Okotoks and Lethbridge.
Meanwhile, WestJet is warning customers there could be more delays as they work to reposition airplanes and allow staff to have the required rest. “To our guests, we know how imperative your travel plans are at this time of year and every single WestJetter feels the weight of not being able to get you where you want to be,” said WestJet’s Chief Operations Officer Diederik Pen in an emailed statement. “Our teams on the ground, in the air, and behind the scenes are working tirelessly to recover our operations while trying to limit any further disruption to critical holiday travel plans.”

It’s bittersweet that my placement at WestJet had come to an end. Time went by so fast, Now I can finally say that I did it! My 150 hours are completed. This will be another achievement for me.
Tumblr media
First of all, I would like to thank WestJet for giving me the opportunity to be part of their wonderful team and friendly work environment. They have been very welcoming since the day I started (October 7) until my last shift (December 12) with them as a Guest Service Ambassador.
I have to say that I’ve had a lot of unforgettable moments and experiences as a Guest Service Ambassador. This experience gave me the chance to bring out the best in me. I have learned so many things during my stay here especially about customer service and guest satisfaction. I realized that I am not only there to assist them but also to build connections and memorable experiences with them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I would also like to say thank you to these wonderful people who I have worked with for the past 3 months my fellow Seneca Flight Service Student. They have been very supportive and kind to me, we encourage, help each other out.
Tumblr media
Last but not least, my two work best friends at WestJet. These are very important to our guests in order to board the aircraft. Therefore, I am glad to be the one who assists guests with check-in and the luggage. To make their flight smoother and easier.

Day 1 : The Training
Hi There! It’s me Jen and welcome to my 1st blog!
Ok, how do we start this? When I first enrolled at Flight Services I have dreamed of doing my Career Placement at Pearson International Airport. Why? First of all, I live 9 minutes away from Pearson Airport! 😜 but seriously it’s because I wanted to experience customer service, but because of the pandemic, I thought that dream won't happen.
Last September 21, 2021, I received an email from my Program Coordinator announcing that WestJet is open for a coop Guest Service Ambassador!! Yay! 🙀
I submitted my resume got interviewed and yay!
Thank you, Lord! 🙏
I got accepted! 👏
October 7, 2021 (Thursday) is my first day!!! 🙌🙌🙌
Training!
This is it!!! 💪
Excited + Nervous = Anxiety 🤣🤣🤣
I along with other intern students met the WestJet Coordinator- Airport Learning at Starbucks Terminal 3 at 1300H. We first went to the staff lounge introduced us to some of the westjetters (that's what they call their staff 😉) Had a meeting at her office. Explained to us what to expect. Then she toured us at the airport.
Tumblr media
 Meet my co-interns! 😉 😉 😉
This area is at the arrival of Terminal 3, it has a Pet Relief area for passengers bringing their pets with them. Cool! 😎
Tumblr media
Then she showed us the quiet zone. It is where people can pray 🙏 it is located at the arrival area near the exit.
Tumblr media
Then off to the luggage claim… it looks empty but there are passengers 😜 (didn’t take a picture with the busy conveyor)
Tumblr media
Lastly before going back…
We passed by to this station located also at the arrivals area where you can buy your presto cards! Or rent some taxis (just in case no one picks you up) 😜
Tumblr media
The airport seems empty right? But hey, I spoke too soon! 🤣 we got busy before our shift ends.
Tumblr media
Alrighty! That’s it for my 1st day! I only had 4 hours today. 🥰
See you on my next!
XOXO
Jen

Let's do this!
Training ▪︎ January 06 2020
Tumblr media
This is it! The day that I have been waiting for. Today was my first day of training and it was a tough day training, because everything was new to me. Thank you to our Trainers, they trained us patiently and made sure that we understand them. They were very detailed.
To all the training that they taught us, the kiosk was the one that I was amazed. Because i have never done kiosk before, I never thought it was that simple. All you have to do is to put the PNR , scan the passport, etc. It is simple right? So next time you guys can try the kiosk too, if you guys have any questions and need help, the WestJetters are there to help you.
I learned a lot today and had fun at the same time. I am looking forward for my first day shift and use the knowledge that I learned today

Last shift, CTV News.... PART 2
After break, I saw that news reporter were there to get passengers reaction to the flights cancelled and how it frustrated them.
Tumblr media
I got excited seeing them shoot.
When I saw them, I just had one thing on my mind. To approach and ask for an email address that was needed for my friend's project who is in Television broadcasting and needed a studio tour. I went to one of the reporters who was not shooting at that time and asked him if I could get an email id to have an appointment for my friend for his project. He kindly gave me the email with which I can approach the channel. I was so happy because me and my friend were working on getting the appointment from past month and we finally had hope of receiving a response.
Tumblr media
We later met Kami and she asked if we wanted to leave early at 7pm and then she can adjust the hours in the next shifts because the weather was supposed to get worse. I told them that it is my last shift and that will I come for just 2 hours and she was kind enough to let me go and add the total hours to my placement. So, I left and the weather actually became very bad on my way back home but I reached safely.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That was all about my last day. I had so much fun doing the placement and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity of becoming a WestJetter.

As the days have gone on, I've realized I have more in me then I thought I did. I've accomplished so much and am so happy with who I've met and who I've become through this experience. I will never be able to thank everyone who I came into contact with during my field placement experience, from start to finish. We all have bad days and we all have good days, as a WestJetter, it is our job to make sure we turn those bad days around into good days and that we make good days into great days. People are looking to us for guidance and help and we have the power to make those days great days and change their entire experience for the better.

And so it begins, the first of many long commutes to the airport for my exciting placement opportunity with Westjet! The two days of training have been jam packed with information and I’ve been trying my best to retain as much as possible. Our first day of training was half in class session with all the information we needed to know about the operation and our duties and the second half we got to see it all for ourselves, along with a quick tour of the airport. The second day was a complete shadow of all the positions we’ll be placed in but was heavily focused on Kiosk. I was able to help two elderly ladies with checking in, printing their boarding passes and baggage tags. They wanted help since technology wasn’t their strong suit, and they were super nice and friendly so it was a pleasure to assist them. They were on their way to Orlando for a 2 week cruise (I wish that was me, I’d do anything to get away from the constantly changing warm-cold Canadian winter) and arrived 5.5 hours early to check in. They came extra early to make sure everything was settled, as they also requested wheel chair assistance, and wanted to relax and eat after going through security. I was having issues with the kiosk as it didn’t print out the baggage tag but it did print out the boarding pass, luckily Kami, one of our trainers, was there to help me out. She pointed out that kiosks only print 5 hours prior to their flight and they were extra early. But she had it done at the kiosk and they were all set to go! I already love how friendly and welcoming all of the other Westjetters are, it’s such an amazing work culture.

GUESS WHAT?
September 21, 2018
I have my WestJet interview today at school. I was so nervous. I remember, when I stepped in the campus door, I was thinking, “I am four steps closer. Then three if I got in... but will I though?” Then I went to the cafeteria, and I was surprised to see lot of students having an interview today too. I caught myself thinking, “this feels like a flight attendant interview process. Their makeup and hair are on point. How will I stand out?” Then I saw my former classmates. I sat with them and I feel less nervous because I get to talk how scared I am. Then minutes later... it has begun... a fun interview has begun.
After the interview, I was overthinking. I was sacred again. I even evaluated myself if how did I do and so on. I went to my locker and I realized I was being hard on myself. I know I did great and they will see it. Then I started to change my clothes for my afternoon shift at work.
Then I finished my work. Got to the bus stop as soon as I can. I walked fast towards my place. Ran towards the elevator, wishing it was a hospital elevator (hospital elevators are soooo fast). Ran towards my unit. Said my fast hi’s and hello’s to my dear family. I felt like a teenager in a movie that couldn’t wait to tell her friends over a group chat about her crush (haha). That’s how fast I am, if you can imagine. Grabbed my laptop. Opened it. Clicked safari icon. Logged in to my Seneca email.
Then I saw a message from WestJet.
...
I saw the first line... “Hello, It was a pleasure to meet you today...” dot. dot. dot.
...
I said to myself, “Wow. I didn’t get in.” I can feel the tears (haha).
...
Then I clicked the email because I have to read it.
...
“Hello, It was a pleasure to meet you today...”
...
I stopped reading actually. I really did but...
...
“We would like to offer you a placement at WestJet.”
...
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
I got in!!!!

It’s been a while, Placement is almost over and there’s only 18 days left before I graduate. I’m a very excited to work in Aviation Industry ✈️✈️
I have learned a few things while I was working this week.
Tumblr media
This was my first time working in an afternoon shift. 1400-2200 I got the chance to experience the work routine during night. I would say that it is busier in the morning, there are more passengers and bags to load. I got the time to explore more of the terminal 3 because it was not busy for few hours. Also, this was my first time working IROP or Irregular Operations in the airport. Guests that had connecting flights via YYZ had to pick up their bad and dropped off again in YYZ. Many guest were unhappy and stress. Our wonderful team brief us and gave us an instructions on what to do when the guest arrives. I helped the guest who did not have an updated boarding pass and sent them back to the security. I was happy because I learned something and I was able to accomplished it by listening carefully to the instruction that I was given.
