What was the first fandom you got involved in?

Oh, well, wouldn’t you know it: the first fandom I got actually involved in, like writing fic to publish online and talking to other fans and trading fic and all that … was DEATH NOTE. Mind you, this was back in like 2008 and I didn’t revisit the series again until 2017, but yez. The first fandom experience I had.

What is the best fandom you’ve ever been involved in?

Ah, they’ve all been pretty all right experiences! (except for when I was in the Beatles fandom but, uh, well, that was more a personally distressing experience than overall fandom blues.) I do have very fond memories of when I was in the sort of general horror movie fandom, writing silly fics for Re-Animator or Evil Dead. Tbh, the current fandom of DN has been pretty fun to inhabit.

What are the best things about your current fandom?

I really like how many people are so open in their praise for each other, how people are more willing to reach out and connect. When I was into DN as a teen, the experience was fun but felt pretty isolated a lot of the time. Now, I definitely feel like the fandom is a lot more in-touch with each other than not, altho there are still islands where I do not tread lmao. I also love that there is rlly great fic and fanart being put out, and that there’s a pretty sizable amount of great trans-specific stuff! Not enough, obvs, but it’s there and growing!

Is there a fandom you read fic from but don’t write in?

Nah, not really. I’m not dipping my toe into fic that much anymore, even when I get into a new show/movie/whatever. Most stuff I like is a pretty closed loop. The only exception is when I will go back and read fic from fandoms I used to be into that I never ended up contributing to, like X-Men fic or *gasp* One Direction RPF. Some of those fics were as important to me as the books I was reading at the time.

Is there a ship which you wished you could get behind, but you just don’t feel them?

I’d love to enjoy the taste of Matt/Mello since that’d widen my fic options, but much like cilantro, I just think that ship tastes like soap.

Name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of & explain why you like it.

I really, really, really like that Hotel AU I wrote. It’s not one people bring up to me a lot, or that gets a lot of revisits, but I love it. I had a whole world I built in my head about Light working in his family’s hotel, his slow developing relationship with L that turned romantic, the entire enclosed world of the actual hotel/resort area and how Light’s uncle who owned it before was a closeted gay man whose spirit very much resides in Light, and also I have always played around with writing a little extra addition where Light wears a maid outfit for sexy shenanigans with L. Idk. I love “At Your Service,” because it was a lot more like the actual fiction I like to read.

But also I am very fond of the Cryptid AU for similar world build-y reasons, and the Vampire L AU because vampires are sexy and it took a lot of work to write, and I really love all my fics tbh.

What’s your most popular fanfic?

Going by AO3 kudos, my most popular fic is technically my giant omnibus of all my lawlight tumblr prompt fics, “hand in unlovable hand,” and the runner up is “tell me i’m good,” aka the fic where Light drunk calls L for some dirty talk.

How do you come up with your fanfic titles?

I panic right before I post the fic and just write whatever is short and gets the point of the fic across. Sometimes it’s just a phrase from the story. I’m not a very creative title guy.

If someone was to read one of your fanfics, which fic would you recommend to them and why?

I’d rec them Change. It’s my best work for the Death Note fandom, and I think it encompasses a lot of my feelings on lawlight. It’s also pretty lowkey in terms of weird shit, which sort of abounds in my other fics lol. Consider this fic my commercial success, and then try out the Cryptid AU or "Fantasy of a Fantasy" next. Or just read all of my fics. That’s what I’d do!

- Who is your favorite character in 2? ~ I have so many favorites ohmygod i love Hinami, Akira, Saiko, Arima, and Koori, however my top favorites (cant choose between the two, and would also be my Top favorite characters of all) are Mutsuki and Suzuya (big surprise). I LOVE THEY

- Who is your least favorite character in 1? ~ i mean i dont really have a “least favorite” but tbh i wasnt so fond of Near and Mello, i found L to be far superior and i feel that the series went downhill a bit after L’s death. i did like Near and Mello just i wasnt as attached to them as i was to L.

- What is your favorite episode of 4? ~ tbh i enjoy the first episode where everything is introduced and finding that sweet lil red panda could be so ANGRY, as well as 5, where her karaoke performances is exposed to Gori and Washimi.

- What is your favorite season of 5? ~ MKDM only has one season *a single tear falls*

- Who is your favorite couple in 3? ~ i feel like the aot characters are too caught up in “holy shit i might die gotta kill these huge naked mfs” to be coupley and personally i dont find many to be compatible oops however i think that jean x armin and connie x sasha could be cute. i used to love eremika until some recent chapter of the manga where the shiganshina trio got in a fight. idk i gotta revisit aot

- Who is your favorite couple in 2? ~ ight im not a hardcore shipper but i do have some ships of tg,,,, MutsUrie, AkirAmon, AyaHina, and TouKen are what come to mind.

- What is your favorite episode of 1? ~ i enjoy the second episode where L reks Light by the fake tv cast, and episode 14 where rem is introduced (she threatens to write Light’s name in her own death note if he kills Misa)

- What is your favorite episode of 5? ~ episode 1 where everything is introduced, episode 5 where Tohru goes to Kobayashi’s work place and Fafnir and Makoto are introduced to each other, and episode 13 where Tohru’s father comes to take her back.

- What is your favorite season of 2? ~ i’ll be honest, i think the Tokyo Ghoul anime sucks ass however season 1 and 3 were easily the best out of what was made. however i wish some studio would make a reboot for it.

- How long have you watched 1? ~ i’d started it, around early 2017 i think, then kinda dropped it. later my friend let me borrow the manga, and later i finally watched it all around mid 2018. so like 2-3 years

- How did you become interested in 3? ~ my two best friends were huge weebs and they both loved aot so after i had watched ohshc and dropped death note i was like huh they like aot a lot so why not give it a try and boom i hyperfixated on it for about two months

- Who is your favorite actor in 4? ~ i literally have no clue who the VAs are oops

- Which do you prefer, 1, 2, or 5? ~ aagghhhh ok probably Death Note. Tokyo Ghoul is my favorite overall series however i feel the anime adaptation was destroyed,, like it was so bad- especially season 2, it was an absolute dumpster fire. i love MKDM but i prefer Death Note’s intricacy over it, since MK is more of a simple slice of life.

- Which show have you seen more episodes of, 1 or 3? ~ i finished both but aot has more episodes so imma go with that

- If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be? ~ receptionist because im irrelevant anyway. jk uh idk maybe Retsuko since i’d love to be able to do screams and growls like that (i looooove metal music but i dont think i am nor will be any good at singing lol)

- Could a crossover between 3 and 4 work? ~ hm... massive naked human-eating monsters vs animals at their desk jobs..... yeah sure

- Overall, which show has a better storyline, 3 or 5? ~ aot definitely, MKDM again is mainly just a slice of life while aot has more to it, and action as well as emotional moments tbh

- Which has better music, 2 or 4? ~ i know i said i love metal music but imma say 2. i hate the anime but damn did some MASTERPIECES come out of it- unravel, seijatachi, asphyxia, half, and katharsis are all really emotional once you think about it and have been stuck in my head for the past week. they have a good tune and lyrics. lovelovelove tokyo ghoul’s soundtrack. unravel and half are some of my all time favorite songs in general so thats saying a lot tbh

Near and L for the character ask

So after L’s death I needed a little, uh, break from Death Note because I was too depressed to read on. I was in a weird & shitty mental place anyway, so I just deliberately spoiled myself, and that’s how I found about Near, how he was going to convict Light and survive. After a few months, that was also what motivated me to pick up DN again. Near was a source of huge comfort for me from the very beginning, practically before I even came to know him - and then I was pleasantly surprised how well and intriguingly he was written. He was now the second character I could relate to as an autistic! (I don’t think I relate to any character who’s ~canonically autistic~, lol) I quickly came to love him as much as I love L for all the reasons listed above. And it’s difficult to single out just one of the many things I love about him, but if I had to choose one personality trait… it would be how genuinely realistic and level-headed he is.

least favorite thing about them:

I’m definitely someone who loves his favourite characters not just despite but   because of their flaws. I very much disagree with his opinion on Kiyomi, but it doesn’t bother me that he’s a bit judgmental. It’s what makes him… him.

My absolute favourite thing about him is how he’s genuinely, authentically eccentric and doesn’t give one single fuck what other people think about him. And he doesn’t shy away from using his quirks against people, confusing them with his contradictory character and just let’s them overcomplicate him. - Without really doing anything. It’s amazing how full of bullshit and authentic he’s at the same time.

He’s refreshingly confident in his weirdness, and inspired me a lot to be more open about my ~eccentricities~ as well. He doesn’t have any cool quirks but is a cool character anyway, and that’s one of the biggest reasons he means so much to me on a personal level. I also think he’s quite hilarious, attractive in a trippy, ugly but natural way, and obviously a huge reason why DN is so entertaining in the first place. It’s difficult to not feel a bit… or a lot in love with him.

least favorite thing about them:

My least favourite thing? That there wasn’t a panel of him looking directly at the reader, saying, “The alias “Ryuzaki” means nothing to me and the only reason I use the name in the first place is because I’m petty and childish and like to collect the names of the (pseudo-)detectives I subdued”.
