World Humanitarian Day (WHD) is held every year on 19 August to pay tribute to aid workers who risk their lives in humanitarian service, and to rally support for people affected by crises around the world. The 2019 theme for the World Humanitarian Day campaign is #WomenHumanitarians. Women make up a large number of those who risk their own lives to save others. They are often the first to respond and the last to leave. These women deserve to be celebrated. They are needed today as much as ever to strengthen the global humanitarian response. And world leaders, as well as non-state actors, must ensure that they – and all humanitarians – are guaranteed the protection afforded to them under international law. Women humanitarians dedicate their lives to helping people affected by crises. We believe our world is a better place when compassion can travel where it is needed most. ‘In 2017, I traveled to the beautiful country of Uganda to help @/OxfamAmerica and @/OxfaminUganda support people fleeing the brutal conflict in South Sudan.

I was profoundly inspired by the people I met. Both the warriors of OXFAM and the refugees of SS. I couldn’t believe the resilience and fortitude of the survivors; humor, grace and compassion in the wake of unimaginable violence and horror. I witnessed firsthand Oxfam’s partnership with organizations like Community Empowerment for Rural Development (CEFORD) to make real, enduring transformations happen at a local level. Today is #WorldHumanitarianDay. Let’s take a second to celebrate the accomplishments of those that devote their lives to less privileged souls around the world. We are forever in your debt.
