I love mtmte in general lmao. s2 takes on the impossible w/the whole ‘megatron redemption arc’ thing, and I know that’s like, a divisive plot point and stuff, but from a writing standpoint I enjoyed it a lot...I think it was pretty much as well done as it could've been given the enormity of the task, and I thought it was a really interesting direction for the story to go in 

also espec if it’s true that hasbro was like ‘hey jro put megatron in your story and give him a redemption arc’ rather than jro like, planning/asking to do it 

anyways. I doubt ill talk much abt the disc horse(tm) here bc this is just for fun and also my own personal opinions and whatever, but I for one am excited to reexperience this stuff

You accompanied with him for dinner with some of his brothers from his gang. At first, he wasn’t too sure about it, but you kept insisting, wanting to feel closer to him, by meeting the people he was closest to. He was hesitant about the thought of you being in a room full of men, but he trusted that nothing would happen. Though after the dinner party, you caught the attention of someone that he considered closer to him than anyone else out of all of them. He felt a pang, of anger hit the pit of his stomach as he felt the feeling of betrayal wash over him. He watched with an icy stare, as you turned to smile at him a few times, as he called out to you here and there, to try to strike up a conversation with you. Those smiles, belonged to him. Why would you go and give that to someone else?

You hadn’t noticed, but everyone else did and the room became eerily quiet. The man you were talking to hushed, as did you. You then turned around to look over at Jin, who sat with a look of hurt across his face. 

“Oh please- Don’t stop on my account.” He said in a stern way which made you slightly frown. 

“I’m sorry baby..”He sighed quietly to you, then cleared his throat. “Can you go wait outside for me in the car. I think it’s time I get you home now.”

You got up without question and made your way to his car.

After you were out of earshot, he slowly got up and swiftly threw anything off from the table that was within his reach before he gripped the man by his collar, pulling him out of his own seat.

“What the fuck do you think you were doing back there?! I didn’t bring her so you could fucking fall in love.You were supposed to be my brother!” He yelled at him as he shook him back and forth. “(YN) is mine, and mine alone do you get that? Do you all get that?!”

His anger and jealousy was subtle whenever it came to you. He never liked to show that side of him too much, but whenever he had to , it came out, and it was like he was a different person.

He was usually level-headed about these things and kept it under control, but he just couldn’t whenever it came to your birthday party. Your friends thought it would be loads of fun, if you got entertainers, as a surprise. But if you didn’t know about it, neither did Namjoon, because they knew that he wouldn’t approve of it, especially since the party would be held at one of his clubs that he owned. They knew how serious he was, when it came to you being around other men, but what they didn’t know of, was his possessive tendencies. 

They decided to do it anyways, rolling their eyes at the thought of Namjoon getting mad. This was your day after all, and they just wanted you to let loose and have a good time. But the minute that those dancers rolled out, and went over to you, lifting you up out of you chair to lead you to the middle of the room, he snapped. 

He shut down the music, along with the whole party, demanding everyone to leave. As your friends hurried out , he glared at them, telling them that he never wanted them around you ever again. After everyone had gone, he went over to you, where you sat upset. You couldn’t believe he had acted this way in front of everyone. He sighed as he knew he let his anger get the better of him again, and hated himself for getting you down on your day. All he could do was crouch down in front of you and hope that you didn’t leave him that night.

“Babe- look at me...I’m so sorry...but when I saw them take you like that..I just went crazy, y’know?”

Being the busy man that he was, he tried his best to be there for you. He hated being apart from you for too long, in fear of you growing sad or you getting hurt. He longed to be at home, cuddling with you in bed, but he knew that he needed to be tough and go throughout his duties he had. He became frustrated with himself, as he drove, one hand on the steering wheel, the other tangled in his hair. He couldn’t shake you off of his mind while he worked. He worried about you terribly. Did you have breakfast? Did you remember to lock the door behind you? Then he came to a screeching halt as he hit the brakes.

There you were, just up the road talking to someone he had never seen before. The two of you seemed a little too close to be just strangers passing by on the street. It didn’t sit well with him and he watched, tightly gripping the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white. He was pissed off beyond belief as he decided to get out of the car, without even turning the engine off. You looked behind you as the man gestured to someone, which made you raise an eyebrow. You smiled at Yoongi but he gently pushed past you and shoved the stranger with all his force as he yelled, causing a scene.

“Get the fuck back! This is my girl/boy! Fuck off!” He practically barked as he shoved him once, then twice more. You frantically tried to pull him off. Eventually he recoiled at your touch and took your arm, then led you back towards the car, where he helped you in and closed the door behind you. Giving the man one more hardened look as he went around to his side and got in. You opened your mouth to say something but he shushed you up with a firm finger against your lips. 

“Not another word, the minute we get home, you’re being punished.” He said huskily as he dragged his finger down your chin and down to your neck as he pet you. “Did you really think i’d let you off that easily?”

The two of you were doing your own things that day, promising to meet each other for dinner later that night.You didn’t want to bother him, and knew that he was busy with other things. You just looked forward to dinner that night and that’s what kept you smiling as you went throughout your day. That was, until you went to a place to get something to drink as you walked around town. After placing your drink order, you stepped off to the side to let the next person order and started to reply to his message, as he asked you how your day was going.

As you hit send, you got sidetracked, from these two men who stepped away after ordering their things. You smiled politely and moved over to give them room, but they moved closer as they peered at you and your phone, asking if you were texting your boyfriend, or if you had one at all. You were a little caught off guard by the questions, but became anxious by the way they looked you up and down and lingered closer and closer. Thankfully, your order came out, and you grabbed it and left. Hoseok ended up calling since you didn’t reply and he grew worried. You answered, trying to reassure him that you were okay, but he wasn’t buying it. He knew something was wrong as heard it in your voice. 

You told him about the men who were harassing you in the shop and he became upset. Luckily he was nearby, and knew were you were thanks to the tracking device on your phone he secretly put. As he parked the car on the curb, he quickly got out and pulled you towards him making sure you were okay. He insisted you point the men out but you shook your head and declined, but just then they stepped out, making you shrink back and he knew that was them. He started yelling and shouting threats as you pulled him towards the car.

“Yo! Who the fuck do you think you are messing with my woman/man? You’ll get what’s coming to you the next time I see you on the streets.”

All he wanted to do was take you out for a night on the town and go dancing, but things didn’t quite go as planned. You wore that dress that made him much more possessive over you. Of course, he loved you in that dress, seeing your skin peek out in the right places, while the fabric that did cover your body, hugged your curves just right, revealing your true figure. But what he hated the most, was the many men that would look your way and hunger at you. You knew how he got when it came to his jealous tendencies. It was as if he turned into another person and it worried you. All you wanted to do was have a good night, and he promised you that he would, being on his best behavior. 

But the minute that you hit the dancefloor, that other side of him started to surface. He went to get drinks for the two of you, noticing that someone was lingering close to you, too close for his comfort. The way this person looked at your body and tried to inch his way closer and closer, made him itch. 

But he knew he had to keep his emotions to himself, not wanting to worry you while you were having fun. But he soon lost all his cool whenever you walked over to were he was sitting down and plopped down right next to him with a smile, and saw the one who was dampening his mood, follow you. 

His eyes hazed over as he the man opened his mouth to speak to you, but before he could even make a peep, Jimin leaned into you, wrapping an arm around your waist, trailing his hand down to your thigh and giving it a firmly squeeze that made you gasp, and once you did, he latched his mouth onto yours and slipped his tongue in. The whole time starring over at man, who watched in surprise, letting him know, that you belonged to him, and it was about time he backed off.

The two of you were having a great time at his club, whenever someone rolled up as smooth and nonchalantly as he had ever seen. Of course, you were with Taehyung, and knew of his jealous tendencies and politely declined, but he just wasn’t having it. He just had to have at least one dance with you by the end of the night. He even asked Taehyung who tilted his head back and let out a deep laugh. 

You knew what his answer was, and it was still a no. As much as you wanted to dance Taehyung wasn’t feeling up to it tonight, and this annoyed you abit. All you wanted to do was have a good time with your boyfriend, but he seemed to be elsewhere in his mind. You didn’t like that he wasn’t paying attention to you as much as he usually did other nights. So you decided to get his attention by choosing to dance with the other man. 

After excusing yourself to go “bathroom”. You found yourself, running into him on the dancefloor, where the two of you soon started to dance together. Now, this caught Taehyung’s attention. 

He grew angry, and felt that you had just slapped him in the face. He snapped his fingers as he got up and walked over to you, signaling to some of his men, to follow behind, knowing what was about to go down. 

As soon as he reached you, he grabbed your arm, pulling you back away from the man, before throwing his fist into him without any remorse. As much as you pulled and yanked on him to get off, he just kept striking his fist into him, over and over again, After he was done, he walked away with you, silently, as his men finished him off.

The two of you were supposed to go out for lunch, but he had to have a quick meeting with the other men from his gang, but he beckoned to you, to stay for it would only take a few minutes, so you decided to sit next to him, and just keep to yourself as he talked. 

But before he could even start talking about why everyone was there in the first place, everyone started to get riled up from your presence and this made him antsy, but he tried not to show it. He trusted them to calm down, and he wanted to see who out of them would push their boundaries, if any, so he could take him out right then and there. There was no room for those kind of people or behavior around him, or you. Genuinely not a problem in my school - we have a fleet of MFDs for bulk printing. We have an admin assistant in charge of the reprographics room who can interrupt jobs if needed as well. It's just an old mindset that they can't get out of. Yeah but then you have to be the asshole that released a print job with 200+ pages while others are waiting to use the copier since this is the only one you can print to. What is full sending? huzzah, a man of quality Have you tried full sending it? From an IT perspective, usually it's not that they want you to know what triggered the problem, they want you to provide concise information on what exactly you were doing up until the issue occurred. Though I do understand that IT technicians are notoriously unsociable lol I'm sure thats a great suggestion but that's the thing is that IT acts like its up to the enduser to already know whats causing the issues and what needs to be done to fix it. Also this doesn't solve his/her issue of getting staples on the copies. Have your IT reinstall your driver and you can select the options that your printer has. likely you are on a global driver, or it wasn't installed correctly! Or if I want staples. We can only select staples on our copier itself. It would be easier if the print queue thing was reliable. But I can't keep running back to my room if it didn't send it, so I make extra copies from my first one. Or if I need front/back from different originals I work in IT support for a school - teachers, for some fucking reason beyond my understanding, seem to print one copy of something, then photocopy it for their classes. Telling them that just printing it for everyone keeps the quality better doesn't sink in. It costs the same, comes out of the same device, and it's less work, but I'm the insane one. Finding the YG building was easy enough, but finding a place to park that wouldn't get him weird looks proved to be a tad more difficult. At least- she /hoped/ it was yours.  After climbing in and locking the door behind her, she breathed a sigh of relief to find him sitting in the driver's seat; oh thank god. I saw maybe two or three blue cars out there and literally did that 'eenie-meenie-miney-mo' thing in my head and picked one. I hope it wasn't too much trouble getting here?

kth: Yes, it's me and not some crazy stalker. No worries. /he shrugged, turning a bit in his seat as he continued to speak to her- Finding it wasn't too bad. Convincing those guards over there that I'm not here to kidnap one of the artists through awkward eye contact was a bit more difficult. So! /he tapped his hands against the steering wheel, his body facing forwards again. Taehyung started to drive, having absolutely no idea where he was going but he'd been in Seoul long enough to know how not to get completely and utterly lost amongst countless similar looking buildings and one way streets- where am I going? Please tell me it's not in the opposite direction. If it is we're going to have to go around the block, oops.

There are people out there who parade around as different people all the time- I think the term for it is an 'identity theft?' /she was rambling needlessly now or so it felt like. when the car started to move, she instinctively reached for her seat belt and tried to buckle herself in but for the life of her struggled. classic rosé; errr- well I thought 4.5 stars wasn't good enough for you, so we were gonna look for a 5 star one? But honestly, I'm so hungry I could eat anything and anywhere. I'm not even joking..

I keep telling my manager that this seat belt is constantly trying to kill me by getting stuck at the worst of times. I slept through all five of my alarms the other day and it had to be the day YG evaluated us on our performance for this month. /she made a face as the mere memory of it all came flooding back to her; -buuuttt. On the bright side- it was one of the best sleeps I've had in awhile.. The area didn't look too off, but at this point Taehyung was driving without a clue- You know, if we get lost it might be more fun. The restaurant was lively and easy to spot, but parking was a different story. After circling the block a few times an opening finally appeared and he wasted no time in pulling into the spot- Ready? I don't mean to be basic but we have to take cool photos around here. We can pretend they're candid but pose on the down low.

pcy: /she could only playfully roll her eyes at how ridiculous he sounded in the moment, but it didn't sound all that bad at all. rosé could feel the anticipation bubbling in the pit of her stomach. she couldn't tell if it was because she was hungry or if it was because she was actually having dinner with Taehyung himself. Out of all of her members, she would've thought she'd be the last person to share this moment with him; It's funny you ask, cuz I was about to suggest the same. And since we're talking photos and posing here, I figured I might as well tell you beforehand that I'm the kind of person who takes pictures of their food before eating it. /she hid her face behind her hands both out of slight embarrassment but also to hide the faint smirk that tugged at the corners of her lips; please feel free to judge me

kth: Truthfully I don't understand people who get annoyed with others when they take a lot of photos. It's like- have fun being bitter for no reason while I have lots of pictures that trigger fond memories. Totally a waste of my time. /he unbuckled his seatbelt, grabbing his phone and his wallet before stepping out of the car. Truth be told Taehyung was excited to see what type of photos Rosé would come up with. The blackpink instagram was filled with countless posts of the girls without a single flaw yet she seemed to always stand out to him the most. He met her on the sidewalk, a giant grin on his lips now that they were finally face to face- Do you want to go eat first? I know you said you didn't eat yet so I feel like we should get some food in you. I know I'm always starving after practice.

pcy: But if you're hungry I could understand why you would be semi-upset. Some people take their sweet time snapping pictures of a single dish. I once had a friend snap so many pictures my lasagna went cold. But it was still good either way! /she exclaimed, climbing out of her seat and stepped out into the street where she stretched her arms high up on the air. she met his gaze, an easy smile spreading across her face; we can if you're hungry! I think I can hold off for another thirty, but I know I'll have more energy after I've eaten. I say this but there are times where I've fallen victim to a food coma aha

kth: I'm the most indecisive person ever. You'll find that out soon enough the more we hang out. /he worried his lower lip between his teeth; a quick look around wouldn't hurt, right? He doubted they'd take more than fifteen minutes to explore their surroundings- We can have a look around, yeah? That way I can think about what kind of tacos I feel like eating. I'm sure you don't want to sit there while I have a mini existential crisis. /they could go left, right, across the street, through the alleyway next to some random pet shop. The options were endless. Taehyung huffed, turning back to Rosé- I don't know where we should go...close your eyes! I'll spin you around and whatever direction you're pointing in when you say stop is where we'll go to be typical nineties babies. /he leaned forward to be at her eye level, playfully squinting- no peeking either, miss.

pcy: But we can't have twoooo indecisive people in the same place at the same time- we'll never get anything dooneee!! /she wailed, making a big show of it by resting a hand against her forehead in a dramatic fashion, the corners of her lips tugging upward some; mmm. I don't know about that- I'm sure the stages of a very distressed Taehyung would be quite entertaining if you ask me. Well- at least for me heh- /his idea didn't seem too terrible and she was about to open her mouth to speak again but couldn't make much of a sound, not when he was inches from her face, but she managed to mirror his action, playfully squinting at him in return; -oh don't worry. I've been told I play fair and follow directions very well. /and with that her eyelids fell shut; I'm ready! Don't spin me too fast-

kth: Too late! You're stuck with me. Maybe. I think. /Taehyung joked, chuckling at how cute her overzealous reactions were. He lolled his head to the, shrugging as he playfully pretended to think- Ah...well, maybe I'll have a mental breakdown just for you. For the bants, of course. All about the bants. /he stood up straight as she closed her eyes, carefully spinning her round and round by her shoulders. People passing by on the sidewalk spared curious glances but he paid them no mind even though the two of them attracting so much attention probably wasn't the smartest idea. He'd take his chances, though; it wasn't everyday you saw Kim Taehyung out in a hoodie, baseball cap, and jeans- Tell me if you feel sick so I can run a bit that way, hah-

pcy: Just for me? Pfft. What did I do to deserve such a generous reward? Save a million lives in my past life? /rosé bit her bottom lip in an attempt to suppress her laughter. man- how long has it been since she'd been able to act this carefree? she wouldn't be able to tell you, but she knew that she would be savoring this moment for as long as she could. he made good company and it was honestly nice forgetting about work related business that had been stressing her out lately; uh I don't think so- if I'm going down, /you're/ coming down with me Tae- I take no prisoners.

kth: That's fair. Though I'd like to think I have an advantage at the moment. You're going to be pretty dizzy, so making an escape will be easy. /he stopped briefly, grabbing her hand in order to twirl her around his finger- it'd be less likely for her to wander into the street this way and he didn't exactly want to be the reason for a blackpink member's hospitalization/ but seriously, I'm glad we're doing this now and not when you've just eaten. THAT, would not be a good idea. A disaster in the making. But hey, I'd hold your hair back for you.

pcy: Honestly, it feels like I'm doing some kind of perpetual dance than anything else. /she mumbled quietly, managing to chuckle some. there was no doubt about it eyes were on them and she half wondered if they should even be doing something like this. again- the last thing she wanted to do was find their names in the news the next morning, not that she would mind- it'd just be troubling for you and she didn't want you to get in trouble or anything because of her; how /generous/ of you... //and after awhile she finally stuck her index finger out, "accidentally" poking his chest; oh. it seems like I've hit an obstacle-

kth: Dang. I think this is the universe trying to tell us something, don't you? Maybe it's saying "make up your mind Kim Taehyung, what the hell", or maybe it's a sign that we should dance? For real. /he spun her around one last time, pulling her into a ballroom position/ But okay I suck at dancing so if I step on your foot I'm sorry. /he chuckled, leading her around on the pavement with random steps that made them look like they were stumbling around rather than what he (sort of) intended/ How do I do this for a living again? Huh.

pcy: /her eyelids fluttered open the second they assumed the classic ballroom position. Her big brown eyes widened in surprise, confusion written in them, but even so she did her best and tried to follow his lead; Yah- what kind of dancing is this even? /she asked through fits of laughter, eyes disappearing into crescents. So much for lying under the radar. Oh well; You know I was wondering the same, but I mean hey- if BigHit thinks you're a great dancer I don't think we should question him. You're a lovely dancer.

kth: At least I haven't stepped on you yet? Plus, we haven't fallen either. I'd call this a success but that's just me. /Taehyung began to dance with her properly, guiding her down the pavement until they reached the corner of the cross walk. Reluctantly he let her go, gaze trailing off to the unexplored territory of the neighborhood they were in. Apparently they were traveling this way, as fate would have it/ hey, that building had a mural on the side of it. We can go take our basic photos over there?

pcy: Key word there is /yet/- /she made sure to emphasize that to him, though she was simply teasing and meant no harm by it. After the last twirl, Rosé caught her balance, curious eyes scanning their surroundings and eventually set on that very mural that captured his interest; Not only are you a great dancer, you seem to have an eye for the arts- /she mused and skipped passed him over to that building she had been looking at; you know- I s never been great at the whole modeling thing- Jisoo and Jennie unnie always have me beat.. how should I pose for this one? Should I be obnoxious and hug the wall like this? /and she does exactly that, pressing her stomach against the wall, arms spread out like a freaking starfish;  cute, right?

kth: It's a recent interest, actually. As of late I've been hitting up as many art museums as I can. The one in Chicago is my favorite so far. Everything there is gorgeous. /he followed suit, laughing at her silly pose/ You know what? That's actually perfect. /in seconds his phone was in his hand and he was snapping pictures of Rosé left and right. His personal opinion was that she was the prettiest in the group, but of course felt it wasn't in his place to say/ wow, I'm spamming you with all these photos of yourself later. You're welcome!

pcy: /rosé was about to comment about his interest in art museums and her members was never really appreciative of stuff like this so it was nice being around someone who did. but before she could even deliver her words, her attention was fixated elsewhere, eyes growing wide in a mix of both surprise and horror he instant his camera flash went off; Yah- what are you doing? Delete those this instant! /she's rushing toward him now and proceeded to make grabby hands for him- well, the phone in his hands, leaving a trail of laughter behind her while she's at it; You mustn't spoil the public with these rare photos Tae. No spamming. No nothing you hear?

kth: /he laughed loudly, wholeheartedly, raising his hands into the air in surrender/ Don't worry, these are for me. Not to be weird or anything- I just like the memories. They're actually cute. Here, take a look. /he held out his phone to Rosé, encouraging her to take the device and flip through his photo gallery/ I kind of feel like I should post something of me to the BTS twitter, but at the same time I don't want to ruin anything or make a mistake. /having a career in a field he loved was everything to him, but the tight restrictions did get irritating. He'd love to share their adventures with the world, but that'd have to wait until another time when it wouldn't potentially ruin their careers/

pcy: /she stood flat on her feet again, calming down some after seeing just how harmless he looked. rosé looked up at him with those big brown eyes of hers, lips forming into a small little pout; I don't think posting anything of you running around town would raise any suspicions. I'll even take the photo for you! Just- don't accidentally upload a photo of me by mistake.. that- might earn me a few antis, nbd. Aha. /she bit her bottom lip in thought for a moment before speaking up again; I probably won't upload anything remotely similar to yours, but I'll upload something to the blackpink Instagram, just show that I'm still alive and hey- my fans know I'm artsy fartsy anyways so I doubt they'd put two and two together. It'll be our little secret! /she chirped, giving his arm a little nudge, playful grin spreading across her face. That's if he wanted to. it's so strange to live the same day everyday :( aaaand about that ... i really don't know exactly where i should start.

so, on that day, i didn't say more than 10 words at school, because i don't really have friends and i felt like i was being ignored by the entire world ?? and, later, during school break, my ex came to me and told me some things and then asked me to come back to her. she told me that she really does love me, and that after i had to break up with her she just couldn't stop crying, which is something she had never done for anyone before. or at least it's what she told me :') i can't tell exactly if what she was saying was the truth or not, because i was with her through so many crazy things and i can say: she lies sometimes just to convince people. sometimes it's really necessary (so that nothing bad will happen to that someone or etc), other times she just does. and i am almost sure that she told me these things just to get me back. idk, something just tells me that this seems a bit off and skeptical. plus, i don't think i want to come back with her, because of those lots of homophobic things *only* my mom told me on that day she came over, and i don't really want to hear what my dad, who's a lot moodier than my mom, has to say. neither my brother or my schizophrenic aunt who lives with us. i actually am the most open-minded person here in this house, if not the only one. i am broke enough after everything my mom said and she is still the only one who talked to me about it. anyways, i am worried about what they can tell her, what they can do to her, and what they can do to me, as their daughter. i am just so worried and anxious i can barely talk to her like i did before, and this is making me even more anxious because i feel that i am making her feel worse everyday and i can't help but blame myself and continue avoiding her thinking she deserves something better than this. i am a total mess, i'm sorry :(

oh, my day... as i said before, it was a pretty weird. but it's okay, i'll say what happened today ❤️

i was kinda quiet during the beginning of our classes, until our break. i met with some of my friends from another class, and i haven't talked to them in what seems like years omg. it was great and i was finally saying things other than "present", "okay" and answering our teacher's questions. bur then we had to leave again since we're all in different classes. and when it was over and i was at my class already, my ex came and she gave me some sweets. it was kinda awkward tho, but it's okay. and after that, when i was picking my material from my backpack again, i realized a girl who sits close to me had a jungkook picture on her phone case. i just went to her and said something like "..... is that jungkook" and she said "yES" and we became friends lmaoooo

moving on to when we were leaving school,my ex told me that she would be alone at home and asked me if she could come over, so that the shouldn't be alone and would have someone to be with and etcetera. i said okay, b u t there's the thing. i had decided to go mcdonald's with some other friends and my brother and i totally forgot that. (here's what we did: we went to mcdonald's some hours before my singing classes and when it was time for me to go me and my brother would leave the remaining boys decided what they would like to do after it.) aaaaand to make everything even worse, i can't contact her. she doesn't have a cellphone, neither telephone at home and i don't have any near relative's number as well. and i just remembered of her when i was heading to mcdonald's already. :(

after my singing class i can stay a bit longer (long story and this is long enough lol) so i decided to record some videos/audios (they're actually videos but the screen is just dark and there's only me singing so idk what to call that) and after i was done the both of us left and we were just talking about some random things and deciding if we would buy some sweets to eat or not. in the end we actually didn't, because in front of a store (I don't know the word in English and i can't find anything... my battery is running low so i don't have much time to search, but it's a place that they sell things for your living room, your bedroom, decorations... things such as sofas, beds and etc) we almost got assaulted by two boys near my age. we are fine, they couldn't get anything, but we're traumatized, specially my brother who was assaulted before. we entered that store to sit and rest for a while and we called our parents. my dad came to get us home along with my other aunt who lives in front of our house. when we got home i uploaded those videos on twitter and i tried to calm my brother. after that, nothing extraordinary. but still, today was definitely crazy.

Olive & June’s Sarah Gibson Tuttle Wants to Bring Back the At-Home Manicure

Sarah Gibson Tuttle thinks it’s high time women embrace the at-home mani. As the founder of ultra-popular L.A. based nail chain Olive & June, that may seem like a counterintuitive goal, but Gibson Tuttle has her sights on bigger things: namely, changing the face of the nail industry. She took a year off working in the salon to devote all of her energy to digging into what was missing from the puzzle of the at-home manicure.

This week, the brand launched their first-ever polish collection, complete with an array of “seven-free”—that is, free of notorious nail polish chemicals including toluene, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, dibutyl phthalate (DBP), camphor, ethyl tosylamide and xylene—pastel-leaning neutrals, and one game-changing device. The Poppy is a universal handle designed to fit on top of any nail polish bottle, using ergonomic design to help stabilize your painting hand. In other words, it’s the solution to the awkward and oft-frustrating shakes that result from trying to paint your nails using your non-dominant hand, resulting in a smooth nail polish application and fewer smudging incidents.

We spoke with Gibson Tuttle to find out where the nail industry is at right now, where it’s heading and how we can all get on the at-home mani train.

What inspired you to create this line of products?

In 2017, after we had three of our salons open, we were getting a ton of inbound interest from investors and franchisees, so we did a deep dive in the industry to figure out what the best way to deliver Olive & June’s happiness to everyone would be and what we learned was pretty surprising. Women on the coast were participating in nails 40 times a year, mostly at a salon, and the price of their manicure was about $12 to $14. Women outside of L.A., San Francisco and New York were participating in nails six times a year and their average price of a manicure was $25. We figured out that women weren’t really able to participate in nails as frequently as they might want to, and they felt that it was near-impossible to paint their own nails. Then at the same time, we saw the boom of everything moving to at-home, from Netflix instead of going to the movies, to make-your-own-meal services, to everything in skincare and obviously makeup. But nails was not participating in the category. 90% of the nail industry is in service. You have 10% of the industry at home, whereas makeup is 99% at-home. We had this lightbulb moment where we really felt it was important to give every woman everywhere a routine and in essence, teach them how to do their own nails.

How did you come up with the Poppy?

Every time I was using a different handle [at home], my hand was smushed, it felt like I didn’t have enough grip and I was shaking. When I went to the brush designers, I said, my hand shakes when I paint with the non-dominant [hand], it’s not comfortable. And I don’t want to mess up my nails, because once I’ve actually gotten my nails painted, I don’t want to mess them up again. I want something I can squeeze really hard without messing up my nails. Once we figured out a shape that was ergonomic and stabilizing, then it was, “How big is it? How small is it? How soft is it? How stiff is it?” The brush matters so much. So it became iterations on the shape itself. The other thing that we were considering was that I know women everywhere have many polish bottles at home, so how do we create something that’s universal, that goes on top of every nail polish bottle? That was a huge consideration for us. It’s sold separately for that very reason. I want women to get empowered to start doing this themselves. And how do we democratize that salon manicure? We lean into what you already have.

What are the main pain points of at-home manicures?

The number one issue was painting with your non-dominant hand, over and over and over again. The second biggest issue was cuticles. Everyone was like, “sure, I’ll learn how to paint but what do I do with my cuticles?” Which is something we’re tackling with our next product coming out in April. Also, there were quick dry issues. We know that it takes a minute for polish to dry, even if it’s quick dry, so we wanted to create a habit or a routine out of it. Some of the other pain points were shaping, which we get a lot of. We’re launching Olive University on our site, Olive U. With hair and makeup, there’s different skin tones and textures but with nails, it’s much more straight-forward. It’s like, 30 things people want to know, and it’s the same questions over and over and over. It’s interesting that no one’s tried to solve it. When you look at the industry, it’s mostly made up of service. You mostly have brands that you use in service and then you have manicurists. But with the at-home piece, people are just starving for information. The few tutorials [on YouTube] that are good have millions of views for a reason, because people are really just looking for information.

It does seem like people who get their nails done at salons regularly don’t try it for themselves at home.

They truly don’t believe they can. They truly believe it’s near-impossible. The thing about it is that nails is the cheapest way to change your look. It’s the least expensive way to be in beauty, and it’s the category that we’re most excited about as little girls. The women who learned how to paint when they were teenagers totally feel differently about the category. They feel like they can do it better than a manicurist, even. There is a salon market, and we love the salon market. We love our clients. But there is a demand that is not being met by the salon market and would never be met by the salon market. There is so much more demand than the salon market ever can satisfy. You have these women who are six times a year [at a salon] and they want their nails done 52 weeks a year. If women knew how to do this like they do hair and makeup, their experience would be so different. But no one’s ever leaned into teaching them.

Why did you decide to go with pastels?

We looked at what our in-salon clients love colour-wise and also what they cared about. They cared about no-chipping but also the ingredients, so how do you find that point of being as clean as possible while being as effective as possible? That was the seven-free formula. It’s longer-lasting with a base coat embedded in the colour. We look at them as new neutrals. Our clients and followers love something they can wear to any event, that they can wear to work and feel really comfortable [in], even a light blue that’s subtle enough. But they also can wear it out with their friends on a fun weekend to Coachella. We wanted to find shades that weren’t currently on the market. When we looked at what was popular at salons, we tried to find the holes. Like, a blue that has a ton of white in it so it feels like a neutral but it’s not this shade of nude.

What brush size did you find most effective, after all that testing?

We went in the middle, because some of the too-wide brushes are really hard for women with tiny nails, and we have a few people in our office who were very frequently outspoken about something that would be too wide, which I loved. I look to not only our company but also our community. We asked a ton of questions—what were people’s favourite brushes, what were their least favourite brushes, explain to us why it makes you feel good—and we found something in the middle. We have a flat brush that’s rounded at the bottom that leans a little more towards that wide brush while not being too wide, so that in one to three swipes (depending on the size of your nail) it works for you. But we cut it down a bit. We had a wide brush that I loved but it overwhelmed a smaller nail-bed, and we obviously didn’t want to do that. That was one of our last-minute changes that I think our team wanted to kill me on. But we really will not put out a product until we’re all really excited about it.

Any tricks for painting nails using your non-dominant hand? 

I think the only thing I would say, if you’re not using the Poppy, is to find a bottle of polish that has a brush that is helping you not, hurting you. We probably tested about 100 brushes. Very few brushes actually help assist you. These polish bottles are essentially a pro product being delivered to the consumer, so you have to look for a bottle and a shape of a brush that is helping you paint versus you having to manipulate the brush.

Any major nail trends for 2019?

I think neons are going to be king all year. I’m sad that we’re just launching our first collection because had I had a bunch of collections out, I definitely would have released neons. I was this close to buying a neon yellow sweatshirt this weekend, which at 38 is pretty surprising. I think a lot of colours are becoming more mainstream and a lot of fun and I think with nails, it’s becoming easier for people to rock whatever they want and for that to be normal, versus a wild and crazy mani that you can’t wear to work. I think you’re going to continue to see the trend of more rounded nails. Women are loving that feminine shape. Nail art-wise, other than New York, I think it’s a lot of fun and people are loving it. We continue to see evil eyes being one of the absolute most popular manis in our salon. I just saw a neon mani with evil eyes the other day and I was like, “of course.”

30,000 runners would be staging the start line and because I was chosen through a digital lottery system, I would be one of them. Thus started the seven month process of booking hotel rooms, buying airline tickets, running, deciding what monuments and museums to visit, more running, and more running. Tagging along with me on this trip would be my parents and my then girlfriend, Rachel.

Race mornings are unique. The mix of emotions would make for one crazy emotional smoothie roller coaster. You’re tired from the early 430 alarm, and the not being able to sleep from the night before. Your stomach hurts, either from being hungry or nerves, but usually both. There’s a since of doubt, thinking to yourself if I’m prepared for this race; have I done enough so I don’t kill myself out there. The anxiety knowing it’s finally race day but you still have a few more hours to go. And probably most importantly, the excitement. You finally get to partake in this 26.2 mile journey (especially this unique journey of getting to run by so much history) that you’ve been looking forward to for 7 months and it’s finally here.

To be honest, it’s stressful. I gotta make sure I eat early enough so that it’ll digest. I gotta get to the race with enough time to get through security and use the restroom and warm up and stretch and eat a little bit more and get in the corral and all the variables. But this morning I remember just being calm. This race I wasn’t going for any time goals or PR’s. I knew this race, this course, was going to be so memorable I almost could care less about the competition of the race or the need to do well. I never listen to music while I run so I hardly ever take my phone with me on runs and races. But knowing what I was about to experience, videos and pictures and taking it all in was my only concern this race.

The hotel food is spot on legit and this morning’s breakfast was no difference. Except the fact that it was full of runners all dressed up ready to go. Belly full, gear on, and bag packed, it was go time. The plan was Rachel and I would taxi to the Pentagon, which is where the runner’s village was, then once the race got underway she would meet up with the parents and they would meet me at various points throughout the race with extra fuel and liquid that I may need.

The taxi ride was harmless, traffic wasn’t too bad except for the dozens of charter buses. But we got to the Pentagon. So we started walking and eventually got to the security checkpoint, which was exactly what you’d expect security to be for the Marine Corp Marathon: marines! And lots of them. Between them and the police and other security it was definitely the safest place to be. We had gotten there early enough we hung out for away in the runner’s village, which was huge in itself being that it was one of the parking lots for the Pentagon. About 45 minutes to go I started making my way to the starting corral, which by the way was on a highway. They had shut down both directions of route 110 and opened it up for the sea of runners.

Walking down the highway towards the start is a surreal moment. It seemed loud from all the chatter of the runners and the multiple PA systems blasting loud pump music and the emcee giving out instructions and motivational talks, but quiet and calm too. You see the countdown timer and people retying shoes and syncing their GPS watches and doing some last minute warmup and stretches. Way up ahead I see the red and yellow inflatable start line you run under. There are crosses on my left from the cemetery that we had toured the day before. There’s already thousands of spectators with their home made signs and the news stations have their cameras all set up. The weather is perfect: cool, hardly no breeze, partially cloudy. This is one of my favorite parts of races, the calm and serenity before the gun goes off and the storm of the race begins. After the pre-race festivities of the national anthem, at 7:40 the boom of the M2A1 Howitzer, yes they use a real cannon to start the race, releases the wheelchair and hand cycle competitors. Now it was our turn.

15 minutes to go.

10 minutes. Retie shoes again for 4th time.

5 minutes. Make sure GPS watch is synced.

1 minute. High five random stranger

30 seconds. Hear a roar of an engine from behind me. Turn around and see the customary fly over by 2 Marine Osprey helicopters flying right over us and then…

BOOM

The Howitzers release us. Commence running.

I was about a hundred yards from the start line so there wasn’t any movement for about 30 seconds. Then we started the penguin shuffle, which escalated into a walk, then a slow jog, then a few moments after the canon fired, my race started. At the beginning of each marathon I’ve done, the mood at the beginning when you get going is fun, with a little chaos. People are talking to each, dropping jokes like “Only 26 miles to go!, all while you’re trying to weave in and out of slower runners. For those of us that had run a marathon before, we knew the struggles and pain that would come at some point during the race. But for those first few miles, nobody, including myself, cared.

The race was a very flat course, except for the first 2 miles which were uphill. We all preferred a hilly beginning. With all the congestion, you really don’t get to your normal pace for a few miles until the race starts to spread out so it’s not like we were going to waste much more time or energy with these early hills.

The first few miles flew by. Running through city streets past businesses, the crowd support was already outstanding: loud and ruckus like a football or basketball game, except everyone was rooting for you. Between miles 3-4 we ran through an area with no buildings, no people, no cars, just a winding downhill road with very tall trees on both sides. A very peaceful section on the George Washington Memorial Parkway that ran parallel to the Potomac. Across the river I could see the tall steeple of the Georgetown University Library, and after crossing the Francis Scott Key Memorial Bridge between mile 4 and 5, we entered Georgetown. Some of the coolest little, old buildings were in this section, and the best smelling food. Along miles 6 and 7 we ran down a tree lined road and under some awesome historic stone covered bridges before making a U-turn to start heading back towards what I was most looking forward to seeing, DC monuments.

Mile 8 had us running right parallel with the Potomac River again on the right side, and the Watergate Hotel and the Kennedy Center on the left. Running under the Theodore Roosevelt Bridge we ran along the back side of the Lincoln Memorial, maybe a 100 yards away. I soon met up with Rachel and got some more fuel and liquid, best coach ever! After crossing Taft Bridge at mile 10, we entered the East Potomac Park area, and the Wear Blue Mile section.

The Wear Blue Mile lasts for a whole mile. And along both sides of the road are flags, volunteers holding flags, and pictures of fallen service members. A whole mile of fallen service members. I slowed down some so that I could try to see them all but there were so many of them. I recognized a few names like Pat Tillman and Michael Murphy but it was definitely the most memorable moment of the race for myself.

Miles 11-13 flew by and before I knew it I was already halfway there. And it was right around mile 13 that I could see the giant Washington monument and I knew more fun stuff was to come. We hopped onto Independence Avenue and got views of the Jefferson Memorial on the Tidal Basin, later passing by the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial and the FRD Memorial. Saw Rachel and the parents again and got more goodies from them. We then loop back along Independence Avenue on the side closest to the National Mall and saw the Korean and WWII Memorials. This area the crowds got even bigger and louder. Signs, air horns, banging sticks, they just kept going and going. Around mile 15.5 there it was, the Washington Monument. It was literally right there. Maybe a couple hundred feet away. I couldn’t help but slow down and look up at it. AND from a distance, the White House was in view. Pretty small, but in view.

The crazy thing about this race is the emotional and physical roller coaster it was playing on me. I had some inspiration and a high running through Blue Mile, then a bit of a low through miles 12-13. Then a huge high once we got into the heart of DC. Seeing all the monuments and history definitely helped masked the pain and fatigue. After seeing the Washington we entered the National Mall which lead straight to The Capitol.  Now the National Mall is long, really really long. It’s slightly over a mile long, one way. And we had done 16 already. But the high continued. Seeing all the cool museums like the Smithsonian, National Gallery of Art, and the National Museum of Natural History continued to help mask the fatigue. All while the Capitol kept getting bigger and bigger. And then there she was. Running on 1st St she was right there. Bigger and cooler than I ever expected. America happens there. And I’m running right by it. Thus began another mile run on the opposite side of the mall with views of the Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Castle, and the historic carousel. I met up with the family around mile 18 for more fuel. I knew I was starting to ware down so arranged one more meeting point down the line, which will end up being a great idea.

Finally leaving the National Mall section, we passed the National Holocaust Museum on our way back to Virginia. We hopped onto I395, another highway they had shut down for the race, and continued on crossing over the Potomac one last time. And then the adrenaline and the high from the past 5 miles went bye bye. Hitting mile 19 was hard, no monuments, very little crowd support, the gut check started to kick in. I got pass mile 20 and we entered into the Pentagon south parking lot. 10 kilometers to go and I was cramping. It was crazy to think this day had started on the other side of this ginormous building a few hours earlier.

Miles 21.5-23.5 went through Crystal City, which was a huge pick me up. The crowds got huge again, and their energy got me pumped up again. Plus the extra meeting with the family gave me enough to know I could finish the race. After the long down and back of Crystal City, we wound through the city before hopping on to Jefferson Davis Highway and running by the Pentagon again on the east side and coming out near where the Runner’s Village was from that morning. A little over a mile to go.

For the end of October and early November, Washington DC was unseasonably warm. Race day that morning it started out cool, but some 4 hours later the temperature had risen pretty well. And after running 25 miles, you’ll doing all you can to stay focused and trying to keep yourself from passing out. We hopped back onto the same highway we started on, and just in that stretch I saw 3 runner’s down with medical personnel trying to help them. I felt bad for them knowing we had a mile to go and their race was most likely over. That’s the hard part about marathoning, any plan and training you have can go out the window just like that. We all take that risk.

I kept trekking along. About a half mile to go the crowds started to grow. You start doing the self-motivation talking. “C’mon Jake, keep pushing”. “You’re almost there, gut it out”. They say the first half of a race is ran with your legs, the second half is ran with your heart. At the point of the race, those that really want it finish the race. The cemetery was back on my left again. We ran under the bridge where the start line was. I recognized the port-o-potty I used before the race. Such a surreal moment at this point of the race, usually don’t remember a whole bunch of it. I heard a man yell, “A quarter mile and two more turns and you’re done!” Just one lap around a standard track, and that’s it left. I saw turn one, and a steep hill straight up. What a cruel trick to play on us after running 26 miles! Then turn two. There it was, the finish line. With one last burst I heard the emcee yell over the speaker, “Jake Bostwick from Edmond, Oklahoma!”

It wasn’t my fastest or slowest marathon, but it was definitely the most memorable. Just as the marines had been manning all the aid stations, there were still more of them handing out medals. I retrieved mine, got my picture in front of the memorial, and thus proceeded to hobble along to find the family.
