MAYBE I am just a pervert this is always a possibility but I truly don't think you can treat all "John x [apprentice]"s as the same (i.e. as equally toxic, "problematic", "doomed", etc.). Amanda is a woman struggling with addiction and self-harm whose previous exposure to John was through his and Jill's clinic (i.e., a setting where he and Jill had explicit power over Amanda), who was so thoroughly emotionally broken by John that he was essentially able to mold her into whatever he wanted. He is likely the most stable parental figure she has ever had. She cries for him, is on her knees for him, will do anything he asks her to because he's all she has. HOFFMAN on the other hand is a police detective (i.e., extremely societally privileged) and the power dynamic between him and John essentially goes "both ways." Yes, John is his "mentor" in 365 party girl sawin' that, and John could leverage "exposing" Hoffman if he wanted to, but Hoffman is also playing a double life where he does Jigsaw shit by night and throws authorities off his and John's trail by day. Nothing ever suggests that Hoffman sees John as a "father"-type figure, he does not cry over him, he's never as visibly distressed over the inevitably of John dying as Mandy is. Hoffman was literally killing people before John ever "tested" him; he was not broken down and repeatedly traumatized in order to become A Jigsaw Apprentice. So I do think Hoffman and John had a weird sex thing going on. The shotgun chair is the most Freudian thing I've ever seen
