#you are a warlock#your patron is your phd supervisor#you get one spell per month if you're lucky#you don't get to choose which one or what level (via @vassraptor)
TBH this sounds like it would be a fun character to play...

#this gives the GM a lot of latitude #sometimes your advisor shows up with exactly what you need when you need it #but usually it's some random thing they just thought of #or something you asked for two years ago that they only just remembered #the other members of your thesis committee sometimes fill in the gaps when they remember and have time #also you're frequently targeted by warlocks studying almost exactly the same thing as you #whose patron is always that one professor your advisor is always feuding with #they're usually vaguely embarrassed about it but their advisor told them to do this so they're gonna #every now and then your advisor shows up like 'here are 100 high level spells' #'yeah the grant was about to expire so I had to spend the money on something' #'also did you kill that kraken yet?' #'oh did I forget to mention you have to fight a kraken? yeah you have to fight a kraken. it's a big one. anyway good luck!' #'we'll touch base on this again next week!' (you don't see them for two months) #(during which time you fight three different krakens; each of them turns out to be the wrong one) #(when the advisor shows up again they don't remember why they said you had to fight a kraken) #(or which kraken it was) #(but it definitely wasn't one of the ones you fought) #academia
This sounds like a frustrating life to live, but a fascinating one to observe. I would enjoy the D&D game, TV show, and/or novel series.
