The 'Carnyx' Nightmare of the Roman Soldiers
The Carnyx was a brass musical instrument used as a psychological weapon of war by the ancient Celts between 300 BC and 200AD in western and central Europe and beyond.
The carnyx was once widespread throughout much of Europe, although only a dozen or so fragments are known to us.
It was carried by bands of Celtic mercenaries; it was present at the attack on the Greek sanctuary at Delphi in 279 BC; it defied Julius Caesar in Gaul; and it faced Claudius when he invaded Britain. They are even shown on a Buddhist sculpture in India, proof of the far-flung connections of the Iron Age world.
Tumblr media
However, they were not only used by the Celts; they were also used by the Dacians in modern Romania. The term “Celtic” is a complicated one. The concept of a pan-European Celtic culture is a myth; rather, aspects of art and technology were shared across vast distances by diverse cultures. The carnyx was one example of this.
A 12-foot-long, thin bronze tube with right-angle bends on both ends made up the carnyx. The lower end ended in a mouthpiece, and the upper end flared out into a bell that was usually decorated to look like a wild boar’s had. Historians believe it had a tongue that flapped up and down, increasing the noise made by the instrument. The carnyx was played upright so that the boar’s head bell protruded well above the warriors’ heads. Its primary goal was to create more noise and confusion on the battlefield.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Greek historian Polybius (206-126BC) was so impressed by the clamor of the Gallic army and the sound of the carnyx, he observed that “there were countless trumpeters and horn blowers and since the whole army was shouting its war cries at the same time there was such a confused sound that the noise seemed to come not only from the trumpeters and the soldiers but also from the countryside which was joining in the echo”.
And the Roman historian Diodorus Siculus wrote, “Their trumpets are also of a peculiar and barbaric kind which produce a harsh, reverberating sound suitable to the confusion of battle.”
Archaeologists discovered a hoard of ritually destroyed weapons in 2004, including a dozen swords, scabbards, spearheads, a shield, bronze helmets, an iron helmet shaped like a swan, a cauldron, animal remains, and seven carnyces. Before the Tintignac discovery, the remains of only five actual carnyces had been found.
The finest was unearthed in Deskford, Scotland in 1816. The Deskford carnyx only has the boar’s head bell and is missing the mane, tongue, and tubing. Images of Carnyx players have been found as well. A Roman denarius, dating from 48 BC bears a representation of a Carnyx. Three carnyx players are featured prominently on the Gundestrup Cauldron, which was found in a Danish peat bog.
One of the seven found at Tintignac, on the other hand, was almost entirely complete. The Tintignac Carnyx was broken into 40 pieces. When puzzled back together, it was found to be just an inch short of six feet long with a single missing section of the tube. The bell was a boar’s head with protruding tusks and large pointed ears. Once restored, the Tintignac Carnyx proved to be the first virtually complete carnyx ever found.

Part One: Melina - Manny x Reader - Manny's daughter wants to meet you.
Part Two: Club Business (feat: Hank Loza) - Manny finally sits down with Hank Loza to discuss his relationship with you.
Tumblr media
Another postcard, another country, another city.
It’s Italy this time, Verona.
In the past few weeks, Manny’s received one from both Milan and Pisa.
He looks at his fridge, inundated with the evidence of your adventures and he wonders what he’ll do when he runs out of space, where he’ll put them all then. It occurs to him that he’s thinking in the long term, not months but years down the line. You out there exploring the world, him here managing his club. It shouldn’t work but somehow it does. He’s the stable presence in your life, the grounding force and you’re his wildness, the part of him that remembers how to live.
“Put them in a scrapbook.” His daughter Melina suggests as she perches at the kitchen table, carefully cutting out a picture of an elephant from a magazine he’d picked up.
“That’s not a bad idea.” You say from the phone propped up against the saltshaker on the table. “You’re going to have to help him choose one though because his taste is a little…”
Manny knows you’re pulling a face, it’s in the way Melina laughs.
The three of you have been video chatting regularly since the initial introduction over a month ago. You’ve become as integral to their routine as breathing. Manny looks up from chopping peppers before handing off a slice to Melina, she crunches it between her teeth.
“Orange is his favourite colour.” Melina says with a sigh, picking up one of her colouring pens to show you. “He thinks it goes with everything.”
“It does.” Manny argues, rolling his eyes before he washes his hands in the sink. “It’s bright, it’s uplifting, who doesn’t want that in a colour? It’s you two that are wrong, who likes the colour blue, it’s dour, depressing.”
“Relaxing, soothing.” You correct him, shaking your head. “What will we do with him Melina?”
“Alright, alright.” Manny says, picking up a hand towel and drying his hands as he steps around the breakfast island. “If you two are done judging my colour choices, we still need to get Melina’s homework done. The two of you were talking about India and the elephant sanctuary.”
“That’s right.” You agree, straightening your shoulders. “Ok kid, what other questions do you have?”
He cooks dinner while the two of you talk. They’re having pasta tonight because Melina’s decided she wants a taste of the Mediterranean, thanks to a conversation the two of you had yesterday about how much you love Italian food. He’d tried to bargain it down to pizza, but she’d given him that look and reminded him he’d already promised that as their Saturday treat so pasta it is.
“At least she’s trying new things.” Sam had shrugged when he’d told her. “She could be eating chicken nuggets all the time like that kid Jeremy at school.”
Small blessings, he thinks as he watches the water simmer. He turns it down a little before he approaches Melina’s chair, his hands come to rest on her shoulders lightly before he presses a kiss to the top of her head.
“Mi Nina.” He murmurs. “Dinner’s almost ready. Go wash up, ok?”
Melina complies slipping out of her seat and heading to the bathroom. Manny picks up the phone, a smile tipping up at the edges of his mouth.
“Thank you for that, I know it’s late there.”
There’s eight hours time difference between Italy and Yuma. It’s six o’clock here and almost two am your time. You’d been photographing the afterparty at the Parma Tattoo Nerd Fest and just gotten back to your room when he’d called.
“It’s cool.” You tell him, running a hand through your hair. “You know it takes me a while to wind down.”
He can tell you’re tired, he’s been noticing it a lot recently. You’ve been working yourself into the ground, chasing the work where you can get it. It’s the nature of a freelance career. You take the jobs when they come in. Your skills are in high demand, you’re well known in the Expo circles for the quality of your work and your reliability. Some creatives were flakes but you, you’re dedicated.
“So, I’m going to take some time off one I’ve finished up in Fiuggi.” You tell him, toying with the silver stacker rings on your fingers. “The last couple of months have been intense and I need to take a break.”
“I think that’s a good idea.” He tells you, leaning on the breakfast bar as he holds the phone between his hands. “You need to take some time for yourself Mami, rest and relax. Working that hard, it’s not good for you.”
“I’m going to book a flight back to the States, I need to make a stop in Joshua Tree, drop some of my stuff at my storage locker…”
“Storage locker.” He repeats because he fully expected you to say apartment.
Something clicks into place then, something he hasn’t considered until this very moment, and it breaks his fucking heart. When he thinks back over all the conversations you’ve had he realises you have never once mentioned an apartment, or a house or anything resembling a home. The storage locker is literally the first place of permeance you’ve brought up. Up until now it’s been hotel rooms and Airbnbs.
“Mami…” He says quietly, lowering his voice so that Melina doesn’t overhear. “Where is home for you?”
“I…” You trial off, your eyebrows furrowing as you contemplate the question. You glance back up at the camera on your phone and the look in your eyes it kills him. “I’ve never really thought about it until now… I guess I don’t have one.”
It’s the nature of the foster system he thinks, moving from place to place, never settling long enough for a home of your own. You’ve emulated the pattern over and over again without even realising it. He sees the moment it dawns on you, something shatters deep inside and it resonates over the six thousand miles that separates you. He wishes that he was there right now, that he could wrap his arms around you and hold you close, that he could take away the anguish he sees in your features, but he can’t. Instead, he places his hand over his heart as he speaks his truth.
“It’s with me Sara.” He tells you. “Your home, it’s with me.”
***
You’ve been travelling for over eighteen hours by the time you make it to Phoenix. It’s ten o’clock at night and you are bone achingly tired, you’d tried to catch a couple of hours on the plane, but the truth is you were too excited to see Manny. You’d called him during the two-hour layover in Atlanta to let him know you were back in the country and that there were no delays with your connecting flight.
“I can’t wait to see you.” He’d told you, the tone of his voice sending a rush of heat surging through your body.
“Me too.” You say, a smile gracing your lips. “It feels like it’s been a lifetime.”
He still looks as good as the day the two of you first met, black jeans that hug his lower body just right, that khaki green shirt buttoned all the way to the top. When his eyes meet yours, a small smile graces his handsome features and something inside you just lights up. You’re in his arms in an instant, his aftershave filling your nose as he holds you close. He smells like leather, lavender and patchouli, scents that make you think of home.
“It’s good to have you back.” He whispers into your hair, and you nod because right now there’s all this emotion rising up in your chest and you just can’t speak.
It’s been a journey over the past few days, facing up to the reality of your patterns, the ones that have been ingrained since childhood. You realised it’s time to change, time to put something permanent in place and you want that to be with Manny.
He draws away, his palms clasping your face. His thumbs chase away the tears that leak down your cheeks, his forehead coming to rest upon yours.
“Hey, hey.” He soothes, his lips brushing over yours. “You’re home now.”
Love Manny? Don’t miss any of his stories by joining the taglist here.

Fleeing and Clinging
"We… who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us." — Hebrews 6:18
The writer blends two vivid metaphors here, the one of a fugitive unsheltered in the open, surrounded by foes; the other of a man grasping some strong stay. Look at the two pictures. " Fled for refuge." The scene brought before us is that of a man flying for his life, with the pursuer clattering at his heels, and his lance-point within a yard of the fugitive’s back. Grass will not grow under that man’s feet; he will not stop to look at the flower by the road. The wealth of South Africa, if it were spread before him, would not check his headlong flight. It is a race for life. If he gets to the open gate he is safe. If he is overtaken before he reaches it, he is a dead man. The moment he gets within the portal the majesty of law compasses him about, and delivers him from the wild justice of revenge. " By-and-bye" kills its tens of thousands. For one man that says, "I am not a Christian, and, what is more, I never intend to be," there are a dozen that say, " To-morrow! tomorrow! " " Let me sow my wild oats as a young man; let me alone for a little while. I am busy at present; when I have a convenient season I will send for thee." What would have become of the man-slayer if he had curled himself up in his cloak, and laid down beside his victim, and said, " I am too tired to run for it"? He would have been dead before morning. A rabbi’s scholar, as the Jewish traditions tell us, once said to him, "Master! when shall I repent?" "The day before you die," said the Rabbii. The scholar said, " I may die to-day." Then said the Rabbi, "Repent to-day." "Choose you this day "whether you will stand unsheltered out there, exposed to the pelting hustling of the pitiless storm, or will flee to the Refuge and be saved.
Look at the other picture: "to lay hold of the hope." Perhaps the allusion is to the old institution of Sanctuary, which perhaps existed in Israel, and at any rate was well known in ancient times. When a man grasped the horns of the altar he was safe. If so, the two metaphors may really blend into one: the flight first, and then the clutching to that which, so long as the twining fingers could encompass it, would permit no foe to strike the fugitive. This metaphor speaks of the fixity of the hold with which we should grasp Jesus Christ by our faith. The shipwrecked sailor up in the rigging, with the wild sea around him, and the vessel thumping upon the sand, will hold on, with frozen fingers, for hours, to the shrouds, knowing that if he slips his grasp the next hungry wave will sweep him away and devour him. And so you should cling to Jesus Christ with the consciousness of danger and helplessness, with the tight grasp of despair, with the tight grasp of certain hope.
I remember reading of an inundation in India, when a dam, away up in a mountain gorge, burst at midnight. Mounted messengers were sent down the glen to gallop as hard as they could and rouse the sleeping villagers. Those who rose and fled in an instant were in time to reach the high ground, as they saw the tawny flood coming swirling down the gorge, laden with the wrecks of happy homes and many a corpse. Those who hesitated and dawdled were swept away by it.

So a post I saw on here led me to look into how one might purchase human bones and the sourcing thereof, and:
There aren’t many laws restricting trade of human bones in the US. You can’t legally ship them to some states, but possessing them. Enh. It’s fine.
ETHICALLY, however.
Most human bones currently in, uh, circulation, came from India (which stopped exporting human bones in the 1980s) and China (which stopped exporting human bones in 2008). You can get bones relatively easily and legally, but they’re not generally going to be from the original source. There’s basically no way you can know whether any particular bone was acquired from the original owner with consent before their death.
The original post that led me down this rabbit hole had a twist ending regarding the resale of bones from dis-articulated Victorian medical skeletons. Which indeed might have been acquired through foul play or grave robbing or financial coercion. Who knows! But this line of thinking could conclude in a place where it’s rarely to never ethical to own human remains, which I’m not really comfortable with given this is why old-timey physicians sometimes engaged in a bit of grave robbing.
Gentle reader, I therefore ask you to question. These bones already exist with no practical way to trace and return them to their source. From where I’m standing you might as well sell human wrist bones to goths. Are you gonna steal em yourself and give these folks a proper burial? You don’t know what kind of rites the former bone-owner would have even wanted! I feel like it’s more respectful to use them for whatever witchy purpose or to carve them into earrings than it is to throw them in the trash.
Feel free to argue with me on this I don’t feel particularly strongly about it.
This reminds me of two things:
1) Buying and selling of feathers from most wild birds is illegal BECAUSE (I might be getting some details of this wrong) in the 1800s it was fashionable to decorate hats with feathers from songbirds which led to them being killed for said feathers and threatened/endangered. If there’s ever a huge market for human remains YES then this becomes an ethical issue. Because that incentivizes graverobbing OR outright killing people for their bones OR (more likely) pressure to sell ones’ remains pre-mortem.
2) Orcas in captivity. I agree that we shouldn’t be capturing any more. That’s appropriately illegal in most places in the world now. The vast majority of orcas currently in captivity were bred in captivity and attempts to release captive orcas into the wild have not been successful. I’m not sure about the ethics of breeding them in captivity, but.... If they need to be penned in order to survive, we might as well let people look at them until the ones in captivity die out? (I’ve seen proposals for some sort of sanctuary, a la elephants, but am unsure of the practicality of that. Also I’ve not seen the push to end elephants in zoos the way I’ve seen the push to end orca captivity, because..... ???)

Ooty Tour Packages
Tumblr media
Templemitra presents to you the Ooty Tour Packages. Ooty, popularly known as "The Queen of Hills," is a fascinating hill station in Tamil Nadu and one of India's most popular vacation locations. This lovely hill station in the Nilgiri highlands attracts a large number of tourists each year because of its rolling tea plantations, cloud-kissed mountains, lush vegetation, calm lakes, colonial architecture, and tranquil environment. There are several sites to visit in Ooty that are constantly filled with both visitors and locals. However, as part of Ooty Tour Packages, there are some eccentric sites in Ooty for visitors who wish to spend some time in a serene setting. A large landslide caused a beautiful lake to spontaneously emerge in 1823 called Avalanche Lake (Avalanche). It is one of Ooty's most beautiful and unusual locations to visit. Avalanche Lake is surrounded by a lush environment of rhododendrons and blossoming flowers, and the surrounding mountains' little waterfalls add to the exquisite setting, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts. Templemitra includes another beautiful place in Ooty Tour Package Kotagiri is well-known for its spectacular natural beauty. Kotagiri, surrounded by tea gardens and lovely green surroundings, has several chances for trekking and rock climbing.
This region's walking paths go past scenic tea farms, lush foliage, meadows, and rivers. Emerald Lake is a beautiful lake in Emerald hamlet in Tamilnadu's Nilgiris district. Get away from the crowds and see this eccentric gem nestled among green hills and tea gardens. Needle View Hillpoint, located on the Gudalur-Ooty major road, is one of the most magnificent and lesser-known tourist attractions in Ooty, mainly for the stunning views of the Nilgiri Hills. In Templemitra's opinion, one of the greatest views in Ooty is  Mukurthi National Park, which is a must-see on our list of quirky places to see in Ooty. This is one of the most beautiful wildlife sanctuaries in Tamil Nadu, and one of the greatest spots for hiking near Mysore. It is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Bison Valley is another hidden beautiful place.  This valley derives its name from the abundance of wild Indian bison that may be found here. Other species spotted here include monkeys, elephants, tigers, and leopards. It is a beautiful city, and you'll have plenty of opportunity to explore why, as well as to enjoy the cultural aspects that make it such an attractive location.
