"Carpets of the Forest", 11" x 14" oil on hardboard, 2020 $500.00 (half of the proceeds of the painting will be donated to relief efforts aiding communities effected by fires. See bottom of post for more info) Under the canopy of mighty Hemlock trees in Oregon's central Cascades, the forest floor is full of wonders. Swaths of melting snow part to reveal a tapestry of needles and fallen branches, punctuated by the occasional early spring mushroom. Downed trees lay spread across the ground, returning nutrients to the soil that will allow new saplings to grow. The trunks of trees young and ancient are wrapped in layers of live wood, bark, and lichen, and patches of dappled light shine through the thick forest, illuminating it all. The complex beauty of the forest interior is especially poignant to think about in the wake of the recent fires that surged across Central Oregon. Forest fires on a small scale are natural events and many species are dependent on fire for reproduction and renewal. The scale of fires across the American West in recent months is unprecedented however, and is a direct result climate change, a lack of old growth forests that retain moisture throughout drouts, and a number of other human caused factors. While the forests may recover in time, my heart goes out to the communities of people that have been displaced, and lost their homes and lively hoods due to these fires. This painting is avaliable for sale, and I will be donating half of the proceeds to relief efforts helping the communities and ecosystems that have been effected by the fires. Please send me a direct message, or email at [email protected] if you are interested in purchasing the piece! #oilpainting #forest #artcollector #collectart #landscapepainting #contemporaryart #oregonexplored #centraloregon #hemlock #snow #spring #willamette #willamettenationalforest #oregon #instaart #artistsoninstagram #environmentdesign #artforsale https://www.instagram.com/p/CFX9LQGDW_v/?igshid=ksx040p0xoo

We missed the Eclipse out here but the woods had a surreal atmosphere due to surrounding #forestfires in the #McKenzieRiver Valley. We slept less than five miles from the #AvenueFire for nearly a week. Smoke hung above the river & hazed up the tall fir tree groves. Obscured the sun & the moon, daily. #Oregon still beautiful. #LightingStrikes #WillametteNationalForest #paulinamckenzieblue #MckenzieBridge (at Rainbow, Oregon)

We headed up to the Willamette National Forest for the eclipse and went to a beautiful mountain meadow where about a hundred folks took in the spectacle. We had a naked runner, a Tarot card "cleanser," people from all over the world and a fun group of college students from UC Davis nearby as well. There really aren't words to describe totality … all photos are filterless with the exception of the first one… #eclipse2017 #willamettenationalforest
