In early spring the camellias start to flower and I noticed this one over a fence. It might be Camellia x williamsii 'E G Waterhouse' which is a vigorous, free blooming and extremely hardy and tolerant cultivar, but the flowers may be too pale in colour to be this cultivar.

Es un cactus pequeño redondo sin espinas que alcanza alturas de 2 a 7 cm y diámetros de 4 a 12 cm.

La parte superior que está por encima de la superficie se llama corona, que consta de botones en forma de disco que contienen mescalina.

Las flores pueden ser de color blanco, rosa, ligeramente amarillentas o rojizas. Estas se abren durante el día, variando de 1 a 2,4 cm de largo, y alcanzan un diámetro de 1 a 2,2 cm.

Al producir flores, son seguidas por pequeños frutos rosados los cuales son carnosos, en su madurez son de color

blanco pardusco y secos, miden de 1,5 a 2 cm de largo.

Contienen semillas negras con forma de pera de 1 a 1,5 mm de largo y 1 mm de ancho. Y el sabor del peyote es amargo.

El peyote es endémico del norte de México y además crece en el suroeste de los Estados Unidos.

Puede encontrarse en altitudes entre 100 a 1.500 metros sobre el nivel del mar.

Crece sobre suelos calizos y bajo los matorrales espinosos del desierto, protegiendo así de los depredadores, además tienen un crecimiento lento tardando más de 30 años para alcanzar edad de floración.

Dentro del género Lophophora, L. williamsii es la que contiene mayor cantidad de mescalina. Este compuesto es una β-fenetilamina y tiene una estructura química similar a la de la dopamina.

Sus efectos psicodélicos parecen estar mediados por la activación de los receptores 5-HT2A y 5-HT2C, donde existe una alta afinidad; sin embargo, esta afinidad es significativamente menor que la de LSD-25.

La dosis oral de 5 mg/kg de peso corporal, genera efectos psicoactivos y cada botón (corona) de esta especie posee alrededor de 45 mg de mescalina. Asimismo, la mescalina puede absorberse por el tracto gastrointestinal, donde el efecto inicia después de 30 min de su ingesta.

Cabe señalar que los peyotes con más edad son los que contienen mayor cantidad de mescalina, dependiendo también de los factores ambientales y las condiciones del terreno, variando entre el 0,7% y el 3,5% del peso.....Créditos a quien corresponda
