Tumblr media
Who is Willie O’Ree? Think Hockey! Canadian Hockey Hall of Fame!
Born October 15th, 1935 in Fredericton, New Brunswick. He played for the Boston Bruins, winger. It was January 18th, 1958 when Willie O’Ree stepped onto the ice and started his professional career in the sport, he played from 1958 to 1979.
Willie O’Ree was the first Black hockey player, he was inducted into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame in 1984. On June 26, 2018, it was announced that O'Ree would be inducted as a builder into the Hockey Hall of Fame later that year. In 1998, the National Hockey League approached him to be the director of youth development for its diversity task force. 1998 Willie received the Oder of Canada, the highest civilian aware for a Canadian citizen.
O'Ree was inducted into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame in 1984. In 1998, O'Ree was working at the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego, California when the National Hockey League approached him to be the director of youth development for its diversity task force. 2018 he was inducted as a builder into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
People don’t think about it, but the importance of seeing someone who is your colour, race, sex, disability or simply a reflection of yourself in a position that you that you desire as a child, helps solidifies the possibilities for that child.
For most kids playing professional hockey is a dream, as it was for Willie O’Ree.

TF141 as iconic hockey players. I'll be taking no further questions about this your honour.
Price = Lanny McDonald, a born leader, tough as nails and knows how to win when the chips are down. Impressive facial hair and determination.
Ghost = Ken Dryden, stoic, tall, a looming presence no matter where you are on the ice. Fearless and formidable in the face of projectiles. Face mask game is on point.
Soap = Tie Domi, a short shit disturber extraordinaire with a a flair for the dramatic. Knows how to make shit happen and is forceful in his execution. Someone you hate to play against.
Gaz = Willie O'Ree, a true legend who always cleans up nicely and gives the best of himself no matter the circumstance. Patient and a master of putting himself in the right place at the right time.
If you are going to google any of these men, start with Willie because his story is amazing.

Willie Eldon O'Ree CM ONB (born October 15, 1935) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player, best known for being the first Black player in the National Hockey League (NHL). O'Ree played as a winger for the Boston Bruins. O'Ree is referred to as the "Jackie Robinson of ice hockey" for breaking the black colour barrier in the National Hockey League, and has stated publicly that he had met Jackie Robinson when he was younger. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in November 2018. Also in 2018, the NHL instituted the annual Willie O’Ree Community Hero Award in his honour, to "recognise the individual who has worked to make a positive impact on his community, culture or society to make people better through hockey."   “I stepped onto the ice and I had butterflies in my stomach. The Canadiens were the best team in the league at that time. They were winning Cup after Cup. Maurice “Rocket” Richard, Jacques Plante, Bernie Geoffrion, Doug Harvey … these were superstars of the highest order. The Rocket, in particular, was one of my idols growing up. To share the ice with these guys, and play against them in an NHL game, was surreal. Even more surreal: We won, 3-0. Now, I wasn’t just an NHL player. I was a winner, too.”   #Willie Oree #BlackHistoryMonth #BHM #HansPoppeArt #Artist #Toronto #Canada  #Hockey #DigitalArt #Portraiture #NHL (at Toronto, Ontario) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cox5LWCv7FG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
