200915 Lay Zhang Is Aiming To Bring Chinese Music To The World

It’s been a few years now since Lay Zhang (also known as Zhang Yixing) released his debut EP Lose Control in 2016. Already a prominent star throughout Asia after debuting as part of K-pop boy band EXO back in 2012 and becoming a prominent television personality in China, Zhang – who is usually known mononymously as Lay – started down a path that year that would turn him into one of the biggest musical players in Asia less than half a decade later: in 2018, he broke onto the U.S. Billboard 200 album chart with his album Namanana, and this year he ranked No. 5 on Forbes China’s Celebrity 100 ranking.

This year, Lay dropped the duality of his Lit LP, split between two parts that arrived in June and July. A multifaceted release that spends its length blending modern musical styles with traditionally Chinese performance elements, Lay’s latest puts the emphasis on his roots. It extensively draws from classical styles and storytelling influences as he attempts to bring China to the world, as he says in the single “Lit” and relays through that song’s highly cinematic music video that sees Lay as a warrior facing down enemies amid a grandiose historic setting, inspired by the legendary general Xiang Yu.

The title track, and the album as a whole, is Lay’s attempt at expressing what he calls “M-pop,” or mixed Mandarin pop music, a genre he’s spearheading with the aim of bringing Chinese culture to global – primarily western – music listeners. Coming at a time when the world is more divided than ever, and China and the U.S.’s trade war continues, it may seem like a lofty aim. But Lay, although he shies away from discussing political ramifications on culture during a conversation with Forbes, has hope that bringing multi-cultural influences together will create greater understandings between one another and different cultures, as long as we take the time to listen to one another. Or, in his case, M-pop.

Tamar Herman: You released the long version of Lit in July, and saw much love for its blending of traditionally Chinese and modern musical elements. What was the inspiration overall for this album?

Lay: I just want to share Chinese culture, so I’m trying my best. Because I’m Chinese and I learn a lot from China, I think our country has a lot of good culture and good traditional instruments that maybe people don’t know. I want to promote that part, and let people know the very dope Chinese culture.

The sound of [the word] “lit” is very close to the Chinese word for “lotus.” I want people to know they can become what they want to be, no matter where they started, like a lotus flower that begins in the root and become beautiful flowers. I was also inspired by the cycle of life and wanted to have a Chinese perspective on it, so the first part of the album is more about the past and [tells] Chinese stories, using more traditional instruments. The second part, about the present and the things we deal with now, has more modern sounds and I worked with great producers like Scott [Storch] and Murda Beatz. Learning [and working with them] so I can mix different cultures on one track, for me it’s amazing work.  

Herman: You released an epic music video for “Lit” as the album’s first lead track, and you’re back again on Sept. 14 with a remix of “Boom” by Dutch-Moroccan DJ R3hab, which you previously released as a single. What about these two songs make them your perfect pairing for listeners to get drawn into your Lit album?

Lay: For “Boom,” I want everyone just to jump and forget. This year is really terrible, right? I want people to forget the bad things and ignore the bad things. Just make happy vibes themselves.

For the second half of the album, my original intention was to have “Changsha” to be the single. However, during the course of the release cycle, “Boom” was selected instead because it really represented a little more what’s relevant to this current climate that covid has brought to the world. I wanted to focus more on that.  I want everyone just to jump and forget. Putting aside the negativity of this year and focusing on positivity.

Herman: How did your creative process differ between Lit and prior releases?

Lay: If I play a video game, my level just goes up and up, right? So I want every year to go to the next level, ever year get better.

Herman: What type of video game character would you like to be?

I’m a warrior. If I can have the opportunity to go to another country, I’ll join the battle with [krumping originator] Tight Eyez (Ceasare "Tight Eyez" Willis).

Herman: Speaking of... I asked fans if they had any questions on Twitter. And while there were many great suggestions, I was surprised by how many wanted to know about your love of krumping. What about this form of dance is appealing to you and made you want to highlight it through “Lit”?

Lay: “Lit” has a very slow tempo. I just found jazz, hip-hop, etc. choreo didn’t match this song. Krump matched this song, so I tried to learn the [style]. In the beginning, it was very hard to do. I couldn’t copy the teacher, the motion, the action. I wanted to know why. The teacher was like, “You have to spend time in this kind of dance, then you can change.” I tried very hard to practice the feeling and vibe. I took maybe three months, and I’m just the beginning of krumping like a teenager. Level three in a game, maybe.

Herman: In “Lit” you say you are taking China to the world, and you’ve been talking a lot recently about how you’d like to spearhead M-Pop’s growth internationally. What do you hope to achieve?

Lay: I think Mandarin can mix with other countries’ languages to become one song, so that everyone can feel a Chinese vibe whether it’s English, French, Korean. It does not matter, I just want to mix a lot of languages, to create one track or music. If people can guess what English [songs] are talking about, they can guess what Chinese [songs] are talking about. It’s very easy to understand songs. The influence that I want to have isn’t about ranks or charts, but spreading Chinese culture to the world.

Herman: Typically, Chinese popular music is known in English as “C-pop,” with variant categories like Cantopop and Mandopop. Why do you feel it’s time to reframe the conversation as “M-pop”?

Lay: Because I think we need to mix something. It’s a global world. Also, I want music arrangements to have Chinese traditional instruments and other countries’ [instruments] put together. Traditional Chinese instruments, it’s better to use one style of instrument itself not with others. It’s a very unique sound, but you can [blend it with others] to make a new vibe.

Herman: You’ve been a top star in both the K-pop and Chinese music industries. K-pop’s having a moment in the west right now, how do you feel about M-pop’s potential?

Lay: Everybody, even me with “Namanana,” we just mix the languages, English with Chinese. But it’s basic, right? I think now M-pop has to change rules. From Lit, I saw the potential that we can reframe M-pop to another level. Let people know that it’s not just language mixing but culture mixing, instrument mixing, genre mixing. Letting people know that we have distinct instruments and unique sounds in China. I think there’s a potential to take M-pop to another level. I want to tell people, “This is Chinese music.”

Herman: You’ve been performing for many years now. How do you feel your approach to your artistry and performances have changed overtime? What have you realized is important to your craft?

Lay: For me, first of all, I think it’s all about music. If I can’t find the right music, I can’t make the performances very dope. Secondly, I think practice is very important. Practice is important if you want to make an amazing, perfect stage. So you have to spend the time practicing dancing and singing. Thirdly, I really respect my staff. Because we have these guys, they can make the stages, lights, speakers, and things for performers. Also, fans. Fans are very important. Without these four things I can do nothing.

Herman: This year’s hard on a lot of people. What makes you happy or hopeful in rough times? Any advice for people?

Lay: 2020 was terrible. But we have to trust tomorrow will be good. We have a very good tomorrow, a good future. So don’t lose confidence, don’t lose happiness. Don’t forget your dreams. Chase your dreams and be happy. And spend time with your family. If you want, you can get anything.

Ooooo it is getting awfully spooky out there, folks...

Temperatures are (finally) plummeting, so for this month I have the perfect score for you. Tis the season for grimy rap music, and with new releases from the likes of Roc Marciano, Styles P,  Sheck Wes, and Westside Gunn, the chilly sound of autumn is officially in full swing here on the east coast. That being said, this month’s list also includes a diverse array of talent from Grand Rapids, New Orleans, St. Louis, Richmond, and beyond (plus an extra deep “honorable mentions” section, to further champion all of the great new tracks out there). So please enjoy some of my favorite songs from the month of October...

1. “Dolph Lundgren” - DJ Muggs & Roc Marciano

(Another month, another dope Roc Marciano project. What stands out on KAOS is the chemistry between Roc and DJ Muggs. With this special MC + producer joint album, the two underground icons joined forces to create a street soundtrack that is at once both a throwback and a breath of fresh air. Roc’s persona on records is unparalleled, he packs a 70′s hustler’s soul in the body of a modern gangster. Place those bars over Muggs’ dark soul samples, and you have yourself one helluva album.)

2. “40 Acres” - Chester Watson

(On first listen, Chester Watson sounds like a clone of Earl Sweatshirt. The Miami-by-way-of-St. Louis MC certainly possesses a dark, monotone delivery that is eerily reminiscent of the vibes channeled by the former Odd Future standout, but rest assured, Chester is an artist more than capable of standing on his own two. If “40 Acres” doesn’t make you want to check out his new Project O album, then that’s your loss - this track is fantastic.)

3. “Vetements Socks” - Sheck Wes

(Truth be told, I had very little expectations for this MUDBOY project. I didn’t even appreciate the breakout hit “Mo Bamba”, but I really do appreciate Sheck Wes’ full length debut. I always say whatever your style is, do it well, and at least provide some form of perspective. For all of Sheck’s youthful inexperience, poetic shortcomings, and scattered focus, he has released a project that captures his energy, his taste in music, and that he is a raw, talented artist with a lot on his mind. “Vetements Socks” brings to mind one of the early hits of another young Harlemite, that being “Peso” by A$AP Rocky. While far from the classic New York-centric hip-hip sound, MUDBOY is an album that successfully paints pictures of where Sheck is in his life right now, and it feels like the NYC sidewalks that I stomp around on today.)

4. “Southside Sector” -  Big Kahuna OG feat. Fly Anakin

(Every Mutant Academy release I have heard is pretty dope. However, certain projects really do an excellent job showcasing one specific MCs potential as a uniquely talented rapper/writer, as opposed to just bars over beats. Big Kahuna OG’s new Weapon Ox tape is possibly the best album of his catalogue thus far, and I can’t recommend it enough.)

5. “CL Smooth” - Willie The Kid

(Low key, Willie The Kid has been dropping dope music since he popped up on the scene again in 2017, after a hiatus. His Things Of That Nature tape is another one of his filler-free releases, and I find this “CL Smooth” shout-out especially, well, smooth.)

For now, we at least have this tough as nails joint to keep in rotation for the foreseeable future...or at least until WSG drops Hitler Wears Hermes 6 on Halloween!.)

(Is this the solo debut of a UK artist on the Pundit PlayLi$t!? I believe so! Little Simz has been on my radar for a while now, but with “Boss” she finally has what feels like a smash to me. Dep’s “Special Delivery”...and any time I have the chance to s/o G. Dep on my monthly playlist, I’m going to jump on it!) 🙏

The Song Exploder Project

Introduction

Throughout the last four weeks, I’ve been closely studying a certain music producer’s technique and the uniqueness of their work. In order to satisfy my song exploder project, it was essential that I pay close attention to the production techniques of the producer that I chose to study.

Firstly, before going into the juicy details of what I’ve been working on, what is a music producer?

What is a Music Producer?

A music producer or also known as record producer plays multiple roles during the production of a song. They oversee along with manage the sound recording and production of a band or a performer’s musical creation. 

The roles of a record producer is and not limited to:

Gathering musical ideas for the project

Collaborate with the artist on the production of the record

Work with different artists in order to achieve results or to improve their songs

He/she might also be asked to assist in the song’s lyrics or arrangement

All in all, the producer helps the artist/band to polish their performances to get the desired sound/tone that a specific genre or style of music requires. They guide and supervise the recording sessions, all through the mastering stage.

Chosen Producer

The record producer that I have chosen to study would be Thomas Wesley Pentz, or better known by his stage name Diplo. Diplo founded and manages his record company Mad Decent, along with co-founding Jack Ü and Major Lazer. I’ve decided to study his techniques and producing style in his electronic dancehall project, Major Lazer.

Major Lazer’s music spans numerous genres, mixing reggae with dancehall, reggaeton, house and moombahton. I’ve always admired the records that Major Lazer has been banging out since 2010. In the last four weeks I’ve had my attention on “Come On to Me” which is from their 2014 extended play of the album “Apocalypse Soon”, produced by Major Lazer and Boaz van de Beatz, and features the vocals of Sean Paul.

Diplo has always been known to pull samples to incorporate into his work, “Come On to Me” features a sample from Willie Colón and Hector Lavoe’s La Murga. The sample appears at 1:53 in the record. Although I’ve decided not to sample any melodies or vocals throughout my project as it would be a pain to get them cleared for public release, so I didn’t heavily research his techniques about sampling.

Diplo’s Production Techniques

From multiple interviews, Diplo has revealed what type of synths he uses. Primarily using soft synths. Diplo has a rather old style when it comes to producing records, he would manipulate and resample the synths over and over until the original sound is unrecognisable but not unusable. Rather than a specific VST MIDI instrument, he would use multiple at the same time for a certain sound.

In an interview with UA Audio, when asked how he recreated Reggae and Dancehall’s tape and tape delay sound, he stated that there was lots of the Galaxy Tape Echo Plug-In, FATSO Jr./Sr. Tape sim and a Compressor plug-in analog squashing going on within his Major Lazer records.

Diplo also utilises the Roland RE-201 Space Echo in his track “Get Free”. The choppy vocals near the end was processed using the Roland RE-201 amongst numerous layers of compression and resampling.

Diplo’s producing technique is definitely different from the usual go to techniques, it’s definitely more open-ended and not prescriptive. From most web articles, both primary sources and secondary sources would always state that he would always try producing in weird and unusual ways, it’s been a rather interesting few weeks closely studying his techniques. It definitely has been an eye opener as it re-confirms to me that, a producer doesn’t necessarily need to know every part of producing perfectly when it comes to putting together a crafty and creative sounding record.

The Song Exploder Project

Throughout this project, I can safely say it is now easier if I were to satisfy a client brief that is open ended and not prescriptive. Most bands and artists that I have worked with typically have a very narrowed view to what they want their records to sound like, and are quite specific as well. I’ve always enjoyed working with an artist that is more open minded and easy going when it comes to producing a record, mainly having a handful of artists and songs in mind and drawing inspiration/techniques from them, allowing room for creativity and craftsmanship.

Within this project, I’ve crafted a record from scratch drawing inspiration and techniques from Major Lazer. Although I wasn’t lucky enough to be able to use all of the plug-ins and VST’s that Major Lazer utilises, but I’ve managed to get my hands on a few that matter.

The Sounds of The Song Exploder Project

Most of the instruments were crafted using Native Instrument’s Massive and Komplete. 

Brass and Trumpets

The brass and trumpet sounds came from digging through the massive library of Komplete. Originally I did not plan on having any type of trumpet sounds in there, however in most Major Lazer records they would always have their signature trumpet/brass sounds. So naturally, I decided that brass and trumpets were a good idea. 

The first few tries on creating a good sounding trumpet was a failure, as it sounded too thin and bright compared to the thickness in Major Lazer’s records. It only pieced together after I decided to have two layers of each, one of the layers playing the chords I originally want; and the second layer playing the exact same thing but an octave higher. Which created a solid sounding brass and trumpet.

Drums

The drums that I had in the track were both sampled and created from scratch, the few samples that I had came from Splice in the Reggaeton section. The majority of it came from a Roland TR-8 which is a rhythm machine that melds the sound and vice of the 808 and the 909, I also used the portable Korg Volca Beats to craft a few of the elements. 

The drums took longer than I expecting, naturally a house track would be an easy Kick, Hat, Snare, Hat pattern. However, Major Lazer would usually spice things up with their drum beats and patterns. Implementing as much percussion and beats they can fit, tucked in nicely under the kick and snare. It took a while to get the hang of having a few tracks just for a beat, however it was smooth sailing after I got the groove of it.

Synths

For synths, as stated above I primarily used Massive for them. I didn’t go crazy with the layering for them, only having 3 layers for the lead and 5 layers for the drop. Major Lazer always had catchy melodies and minimal musical work going when it comes to a lead or melody, which plays to my disadvantage. I’m absolutely horrible with music theory and even a simple chord progression would take me longer to bang out than the average producer, however I am rather efficient at building synth sounds. Thankfully, Peter hopped in and played a rather catchy melody after I told him what I wanted it to sound like, and it just went from there. With him planning the melodies while I worked on the synths.

The “drop” of the track I produced consisted of single notes, with different layers of synth sounds to thicken and drive the melody. 

5 different layers to be exact:

Main Lead

Secondary Lead with a higher release to add thickness and “bounciness” to the track

Square Saw wave with a few tweaks to add more mids as the main lead contributed more highs

Bass Lead which follows the Main Lead’s notes, but it was a wobble bass which adds to the groove of it

Bass Track which was the only track that utilises Komplete’s FM8 to accompany the drums

Vocals

Lastly, the vocals. We didn’t record in a vocal booth but rather in the console room where I was sitting, we used the AKG C414 microphone with a pop filter. The vocals were done within 2 hours, the artist, David Sawang and I agreed on the freedom of the lyrics. There weren’t any plans or ideas when he first stepped into the studio, we just played the track on loop and randomly chanting out words that would go well in a certain section. The ideas didn’t come fast and easy, but eventually they pieced together and we got a few good takes of him.

After reading countless articles about how Diplo spends his time at the studio, and how he gets inspired. I decided it’d be a good idea to try it for myself with the vocals, and have a general idea but nothing certain when we first started working on this together. I’d say it was easier the way things went, the only idea we had was to make it catchy.

Conclusion

All in all, it has been a rather fun few weeks. I’ve definitely learned more about being a good producer and engineer, not just production techniques from the producer that I have chosen, but also about many different ways of making a track. Throughout the project I’ve also picked up a few learnings that I would incorporate into my own practices, synth work, microphone placement and vocal mixing techniques to name a few.

The 62nd Annual Grammy Awards took place this year under the shadow of major tumult at the Recording Academy. They also began just hours after news broke that NBA legend Kobe Bryant, his . daughter Gianna and seven others died in a helicopter crash near Los Angeles.

Despite the somber mood, the stars showed up for a night of performances, Grammy Moments and of course the distribution of the awards themselves. Among the many winners who received awards before the evening ceremony began were Lizzo, Rosalía, Willie Nelson and Tanya Tucker. Alicia Keys was set to reprise her role as sunny host, with performances on the docket from Ariana Grande, Rosalía, Demi Lovato and many more.

Going into the evening, Lizzo led with the most nominations (eight), while Lil Nas X and Billie Eilish followed with six apiece. All three of those artists contended for Best New Artist (though their respective newness varies), alongside five other artists, in the first year of an expanded category.

The 62nd Annual Grammy Awards took place this year under the shadow of major tumult at the Recording Academy. They also began just hours after news broke that NBA legend Kobe Bryant, his . daughter Gianna and seven others died in a helicopter crash near Los Angeles.

Despite the somber mood, the stars showed up for a night of performances, Grammy Moments and of course the distribution of the awards themselves. Among the many winners who received awards before the evening ceremony began were Lizzo, Rosalía, Willie Nelson and Tanya Tucker. Alicia Keys was set to reprise her role as sunny host, with performances on the docket from Ariana Grande, Rosalía, Demi Lovato and many more.

Going into the evening, Lizzo led with the most nominations (eight), while Lil Nas X and Billie Eilish followed with six apiece. All three of those artists contended for Best New Artist (though their respective newness varies), alongside five other artists, in the first year of an expanded category.

New top story from Time: See All the Winners of the 2020 Grammy Awards

The 62nd Annual Grammy Awards took place this year under the shadow of major tumult at the Recording Academy. They also began just hours after news broke that NBA legend Kobe Bryant, his . daughter Gianna and seven others died in a helicopter crash near Los Angeles.

Despite the somber mood, the stars showed up for a night of performances, Grammy Moments and of course the distribution of the awards themselves. Among the many winners who received awards before the evening ceremony began were Lizzo, Rosalía, Willie Nelson and Tanya Tucker. Alicia Keys was set to reprise her role as sunny host, with performances on the docket from Ariana Grande, Rosalía, Demi Lovato and many more.

Going into the evening, Lizzo led with the most nominations (eight), while Lil Nas X and Billie Eilish followed with six apiece. All three of those artists contended for Best New Artist (though their respective newness varies), alongside five other artists, in the first year of an expanded category.
