Linden in November 1960

This photo shows the Linden terminal in Wilmette in 1960. The station building you see in the photo exists today, although trains now serve a newer station built just a bit to the east (in the area where you see parked cars). The original Linden station was designed by Arthur Gerber, an architect responsible for a number of Prairie School style stations and buildings on the 'L'. When originally designed, the station house consisted only of the rectangular center portion. The side wings were added a few years later.

But even before this station building was constructed, however, a modest platform was constructed one Monday evening, on the night of April 1, 1912, with service beginning the very next morning--and as simply and quickly as that, 'L' service was extended from Evanston into Wilmette, and has existed there ever since.

Today, this continues to be where the Purple Line terminates. The original station house has been preserved, restored, and adaptively-reused as retail space.
