He's recognized as the first Black American winemaker in the U.S. He fell in love with wine and viticulture while stationed in France during World War I. Shortly after prohibition ended, he inherited land in Clarksville, Virginia, and by 1933, he began to grow his first grapes on the land. In 1940, Lewis opened Woburn Winery and sold his wines to locals until he passed in 1974. The Woburn Winery is the first Black American-owned winery in the U.S. and is believed to have been the only Virginia winery to produce wine solely from its own grapes at the time. 🍇 . He produced Labrusca and hybrid wines known as the "Virginia-Carolina Brand". Lewis' products were listed as table and dessert wines in the Wines & Vines Annual Directory, Issue 1960. Sabato, giornata fredda ma con sole, ho aperto questa bottiglia di Sfurzat della Valtellina di @cantinaninonegri un prodotto di seconda fascia rispetto ai vini più blasonati della storica cantina. Eppure non ha per nulla deluso, anzi. Per i meno esperti, lo Sfurzat è un vino prodotto con uve Nebbiolo, in Valtellina chiamata Chiavennasca. La particolarità è l’appassimento, per almeno 3 mesi, delle uve prima della vinificazione, cosa questa che garantisce un elevata concentrazione zuccherina ma anche rese bassissime. Il vino nel bicchiere è davvero incantevole grazie ad un intenso rubino con riflessi granato. Mettendo il naso nel bicchiere non lo si vuole più togliere perché si viene avvolti da intensi profumi di frutti rossi in confettura, poi liquirizia, timo, legno, tabacco, vaniglia, pellame, cacao, eucalipto. Una meraviglia davvero. Se il naso ha stupito, in bocca meraviglia ancor di più per la sua morbidezza. È fresco, caldo con tannini eleganti. Torna la frutta matura che non è stucchevole ma estremamente piacevole. È strutturato ed elegante in tutto e se questo è il fratello minore, non oso immaginare il maggiore! Mi è davvero piaciuto sia per il gusto (lo si può sorseggiare anche dopo cena) sia perché sono riuscito ad abbinarlo facilmente a del prosciutto crudo e formaggio stagionato così come a delle castagne senza ricercare arrosti o piatti più strutturati.
