"Konohagakure Fuyu Matsuri (Hidden Leaf Village Winter Festival)"

I felt like drawing something pretty (that had a winter theme), so here is Sakura with a little Sarada wearing their best kimonos on a winter day. I imagine Konoha must have all sorts of festivals, especially during their peaceful time period (after Naruto Shippuden and before the Boruto series). I based Sakura’s kimono on a tomesode (kimono for married women), and for Sarada, a style of kimono that a small child (girl) would wear on a special occasion.

I haven’t drawn in an anime/manga style in a while, so this was fun to create. I hope everybody likes this!

I actually haven’t watched Boruto in…well…gee…a year and a half? I’m so behind on the series. I’ve been wanting to watch Shippuden again. Last anime I recently watched was Kimetsu No Yaiba season 4.

P.S. Fellow artists, do you ever hit an “Artist Block”, or just feel super unmotivated to create anything at all? That is how I have felt since March of last year. I haven’t worked on cosplay since then (when I always have made so much cosplay, since 2003) but I reached a total burn-out. Same came to artwork. I need to (and would love to) create more artwork, yet I don’t want to force myself when I feel unmotivated. I find myself gaming (Skyrim and Dragon Age Inquisition) more than creating, but I only play games when my son is visiting his father (which is usually twice a week). Even my son has reached an “art block” and unmotivated stage…he used to draw so much, non-stop. There must be something in the air. I’m also super exhausted (due to work and also having Fibromyalgia), so that contributes to being unmotivated. I need to get out of this mode…time to create more artwork and cosplay! Please send me extra energy!

Shimokitazawa Tengu Festival

January 28th — January 30th Shimokitazawa Tengu Festival is a novel variation on the Setsubun theme, centering around Shinryuji Temple with a small parade through the shopping streets of Shimokitazawa. The parade members are dressed as mountain priests or tengu, legendary creatures with avian characteristics, and throw beans as they go for good luck. The Shimokitazawa Tengu Festival is a result of the Doryodaisatta (a tengu) enshrined at Shinryuji Temple for protection. Although traditionally bird-faced, over the course of time the beaks of these tengu have transformed to the point where now they are often depicted with unnaturally long noses, like an evil-looking Pinocchio. Another unique feature of the festival is that instead of the typical cries of “Demons get out!” (鬼は外), the calls heard at Shinryuji Temple are “Luck come in!” (福は内), the belief being that luck would do the job of driving out the demons, anyway.

✴ 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫 𝐋𝐚𝐰. By total chance, or maybe destiny working in your favour, that exact night the Polar Tang docked at a certain island. It was, in their case, the end of summer. Some islands only have one season, others the fourth of them, but for this one they only had a few weeks of summer and the rest it was all winter and snow. It was logical that they wanted to celebrate the last night of warm breeze kissing their cheeks. Yet, you didn’t know. But Law, did…. However, he didn’t say anything until late at night. He asked you to stay, while the rest of the crew were given the right to wonder the island. You felt a little sad… “why, captain, if you are staying I have to stay too?” you asked yourself while waiting for time pass inside your room. A sudden knock on the metallic door, however, changed it all. “(Name)-ya, I need you over the deck in 10 minutes”- “Aye Aye, Captain!” As you crawl the ladder to emerge on the top deck of the submarine, you watched Law standing  with his hands on his back and his nose pointing towards the sky. You walked right next to him, and the first explosion illuminated both of your cheeks… even if Law’s were a little red…

✴ 𝐑𝐨𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐚 𝐙𝐨𝐫𝐨. At first he didn’t quite care, yet the promise of good sake and equally good food convinced him to watch the fireworks together. Is not that Zoro didn’t love you, it was that he didn’t think it would be important to you. It was not until the first blooming flower of fire lighted up the sky and you took his hand, that his metallic eyes shone. He really didn’t cared about the colours nor the scent of gunpowder in the atmosphere, he only cared about the the rainbow lights tinting your smile. A gasp that stopped him from breathing for some seconds, what a beautiful, delicate human he had next to him, he swore right there that the edge of his sword would always protected his most valuable treasure…

✴ 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐠𝐚𝐬 𝐃. 𝐀𝐜𝐞. Late, both were late to the fireworks. Why? Well… let’s say you two were having a little “fun” before the end of summer matsuri. But, if there was something Ace didn’t want you to miss was all the things that make you happy. He knew that going back in time wasn’t possible, however he also knew that the most beautiful things can be created if there is a flame inside your heart… “It’s ok, Ace! Is not your fault we should go back” you murmured, a little disappointed yet satisfied as loving him would only make you forget about the time.“(Naa-me…) look at me… hanabi!~” he playfully sang and casted, conducting countless brilliant orbs playing around you and flying up in the sky. Those were tinted in greenish glow, and every shiny dot reminded you of fireflies coming from the tips of his warm fingers. You covered your mouth with your hands and some tears of love blurred your vision; Ace didn’t need to create fireworks either way… because he is enough fire to light up your skies.

✴ 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐣𝐢. This man prepared absolutely everything. One of his -cliché- dreams has always been to have a romantic picnic at the park under the beautiful sparkles that mark the deathbed of summer. All types of snacks, yukatas on, even the perfect spot under a cherry blossom tree. All of that and more he planned for his beloved person. Carrying a basket on one of his arms and offering the other one to escort you towards the perfect location. He felt at peace, not nervous, no nose bleeding, only calm and pure happiness pumping through his veins. And exactly, when the moment the fireworks reached its peak, he couldn’t care a less… because there was something a lot more brilliant resting right by his shoulder, and it was you… and in that moment he knew exactly what words to pronounce… “(Name)-chan, would you marry me?”

Throwing it back to one of my favorite cosplays of all time: Winter Lapis at Holiday Matsuri. I wanted to do a very fantastical inspired Lapis and I really think this one took the cake. @lazulicos on insta made these stunning wings that really took it next level. I couldn’t see and could barely move but I really did feel very happy with this one at the end of the day.

Is there such thing as a litteral tanuki kimono? Also, I'm going to Japan soon and my mom keeps telling me we can buy a yukata easily in Japan for the festival. Is that true or would they be sold out or something?

Tanuki are kinda rare as a motif and mainly found on wintery items. Folktales are a traditional winter pattern, and those with tanuki often hint at Kachikachi Yama (where a rabbit tricks a malicious tanuki), or Bunbuku Chagama (where a tanuki changes into a tea kettle).

In modern kimono fashion, you sometimes see naturalistic tanuki on some items but they are few and highly coveted :S

On the other hand, modern brands sometimes have them on fun (but a bit pricey) novelty items (hanhaba obi for ex), especially with other yôkai during summertime (monsters and ghosts are linked with summer traditions of "fear", see hyakumonogatari and hyakkiyagyô). Gofukuya is one of those brands.

Outside Japan, I can recommend you 3Magpies and their modern kimono and obi, some with yôkai. But I don't think they've designed a tanuki only pattern - yet ;)

As for finding a yukata during summertime in Japan, it should not be super hard as it is a staple of summer fun and matsuri season :)

We covered this subject here a while ago with super nice @akaomoide giving adresses. Many kimono shops have closed because of covid so take locations with a bit of salt but advices still hold!

Depending on where you'll be based, try department stores and Tansuya second hand shops. Areas around big temples like Asakusa have many small shops and/or fleas markets - just be careful of "fake" touristy kimono (satin and bath-robe belts are usually a bad sign).

Don't forget shopping before leaving is also an option. Depending on where you leave, you might find a yukata easily online.
