Pokemon Card of the Day #2966: Wishiwashi (Dragon Majesty)
Tumblr media
Wishiwashi had one role, and that was to power up Wishiwashi-GX. One Wishiwashi-GX was a bulky Basic Pokemon with really high Energy costs, while the other... well, with a bunch of this maybe you could get something decent but it wasn't exactly reliable to say the least. It was likely the first Wishiwashi-GX that you'd be working with in general, and the boost to bulk could actually mean something. Maybe.
Wishiwashi itself didn't impress in the stats department. 30 HP was just a free KO for anything that could target it, and it also meant that the Lightning Weakness was pretty pointless. The Retreat Cost was 1 if you had to start with one of these on your first turn.
Meet Up was the Ability that gave Wishiwashi at least a theoretical role. Wishiwashi-GX you had in play got 20 more HP and their attacks did 20 more damage to the opponent's Active Pokemon. This let Wishiwashi-GX soak up more hits, or the bad one could hit harder (though never to the point where you wouldn't just rather use another Pokemon since the second came out in Cosmic Eclipse). Wishiwashi being a 30 HP Bench sitter did clash quite a bit with the whole sit behind a bulky Pokemon concept, as anything that could find a way to put damage on a Benched Pokemon just got Prizes in that way. 20 HP was sometimes notable and sometimes not a huge deal. At least Wishiwashi decks would likely pack a bunch of disruption to help.
Water Gun was 20 damage for a Water Energy. Base Set Rattata did this but Colorless and with a better Retreat Cost in 1999, so this obviously wasn't worth it in 2018.
Wishiwashi looked okay in theory, but in practice a 30 HP Pokemon to boost HP and damage on something else by just 20 wasn't really enough. It went well with the whole schooling Wishiwashi concept but was more of a gimmick than an actual good deck concept. The first Wishiwashi-GX had some minor success on its own without this, believe it or not, so the Pokemon didn't miss out on everything.

Pokemon Card of the Day Schedule: Dragon Majesty
Dragon Majesty was a mini-set that focused a lot of Dragon-type Pokemon, in which Dragon-type included Pokemon that were sometimes other types in their cards in the set. It also had some that they've pushed as like dragons, such as Charizard (understandable) and Feraligatr (it learns Dragon Claw, I guess). Some extra Fire- and Water-types that didn't exactly fit the theme were in here too, so the set was mostly a 3 type set plus a few Colorless to round it out.
The set was more of a collector's set in theory, and there wasn't a lot of depth for players. Still, Victini Prism Star was a cool tech in Blacephalon decks, Quagsire saw some play with Naganadel, and Turtonator could work as a big hitter for Fire decks that could survive discarding a huge amount of Energy. Fiery Flint was the big Trainer in the set, also focusing toward Fire-types. In a competitive sense, Dragon Majesty was more of a set to help Fire-types more than Dragon-types, and it did that, though a lot of the rest of the set was of the almost good but just barely short variety.
Charizard Blaziken Victini Prism Star Reshiram-GX Kingdra-GX Feraligatr Quagsire Corsola Wishiwashi Dragonite-GX Altaria Altaria-GX Salamence-GX White Kyurem-GX Turtonator Drampa Blaine's Last Stand Dragon Talon Fiery Flint Lance Prism Star Zinnia
