The Cottage In The Woods | Two

Chapter Two - The Cat and The Witch

look at that 2 chapters for the price of one lets go baby. More of the boys will be coming just give it time.

Seonghwa never wanted to go into the woods again. He had convinced himself that nothing could convince him to ever go back into those woods ever again. Well, maybe one thing.

Seonghwa knew he was running out of supplies. After his conversation with Hongjoong, Seonghwa gathered as many of his plants as he could to keep his supply for as long as he could. After that trip Seonghwa would never go into the woods again. Now almost three weeks later, as Seonghwa was on his last ginger root he knew that he was fucked. No one in the village sold the type of ingredients that he needed for the medicines that he made. Only the garden in the woods had the plants that he needed. As Seonghwa looked at his thinning supply of materials his mind was already made up. 

He gathered up his satchel with everything he needed into his satchel. Grabbed his cloak off the hanger and placed it on his shoulders. Seonghwa gripped the strap of his satchel as he stared down the door of his home. 

Seonghwa let out a groan and let his head bang against the door. He couldn’t do this. What idiot would want to go back to the place where they had met a faerie? Not even an idiot would do that. Yet here Seonghwa was, standing in front of his door, ready to go back to the very place he met the faerie. 

With a deep breath, Seonghwa opened his door with one swift movement. He quickly shut the door behind him and started heading toward the woods. If he made it quick he could get this over with as quickly as possible. He passed by all the usual homes he saw on his way to the woods. Seonghwa seemed to look at them more longingly now as he made his way closer and closer to the treeline as if he would never see them again. 

Sooner than he would have liked Seonghwa arrived at the entrance to the woods. He stared down what seemed like the never ending rows of trees that made up the woods. For some reason Seonghwa felt like the woods got darker the deeper he looked beyond the treeline that stood as the border between the woods and the village. With a gulp, Seonghwa took his first step back into the woods. 

The walk remained almost like muscle memory. His feet carried him down the same path that he had traveled too many times for him to count. Everything about this situation should feel natural. The way his feet walked over the worn down grass of his path. The sound of animals moving around the woods would usually feel calming to Seonghwa but today it only served to put him even more on edge. 

Seonghwa seemed to flinch at every little sound. His head constantly moved, looking closely at every dark little corner that his mind only seemed to fill with the worst possible situation. Seonghwa held the strap of his satchel tightly, trying to have some grip on his reality. Each step Seonghwa took brought him closer to the destination that he was heading towards. 

The garden appeared in Seonghwa’s sight and Seonghwa let out a breath he didn’t even realize he was holding. A small smile appeared on his face once he saw the garden. No matter what that fae said to scare him, Seonghwa couldn’t help but feel safe as he knelt down to tend to the garden. 

“I know I left for a while, I'm sorry.” Seonghwa apologized to the garden. “Guess I’m not as fearless as I like to think I am.” 

With the apology out of the way, Seonghwa started tending to the garden. He pulled out the few weeds that had made their way into the garden. He trimmed the dead parts of the plants off and put them back into the soil. Then he started collecting his ingredients. 

Seonghwa softly hummed to himself as he worked. A small melody he remembers from when he was young but can’t exactly remember who sung it to him first. He worked through the soil, collecting various roots, leaves, and flowers that he carefully put into their individual jars that he brought with him. 

Just as Seonghwa was putting away the ginger he had collected, there was a rustling behind him. Seonghwa jumped and turned around, his head frantically searching for whatever made the noise. Was it Hongjoong? 

Seonghwa got to his feet and slowly started to try and find the source of the noise. Another rustling sound came from behind him. He quickly turned his body around, by this point Seonghwa was shaking. 

“Whoever’s out there, this isn’t funny.” Seonghwa called out. 

More rustling. 

“If that’s you Hongjoong I get the point you can stop now.” 

Seonghwa finally saw where the noise was coming from. A large bush rustled harshly, like a creature waiting to catch its prey. Suddenly something jumped from the bush. Seonghwa let out a scream and held his bag in front of him to shield himself from whatever beast had decided to kill him.

After a few moments had passed and Seonghwa had realized he wasn’t getting mauled by a monster he lowered his bag from his face. There was no horrid monster waiting to kill him. No, instead what sat in its place was a black cat. The cat looked up at Seonghwa with its large green eyes and meowed at him, clearly confused at why this human was so afraid of him. 

Seonghwa couldn’t believe himself. He plopped himself on the ground and stared at the cat. Seonghwa couldn’t help but laugh at himself. Soon Seonghwa’s laughter grew slightly manic in his disbelief with himself. He laid down against the ground and looked up at the trees. 

“I am truly losing it, aren’t I?” Seonghwa said. 

The black cat had walked over and climbed on top of Seonghwa’s chest. The cat sat down and looked down at him. Seonghwa moved his arm and petted the cat who now sat on top of him.

“You don’t look like you’re gonna eat me.” Seonghwa said to the cat. 

The cat nuzzled up against Seonghwa’s hand. 

“You are not going to eat me, right?” 

The cat simply meowed and laid down on Seonghwa’s chest. 

“I’ll take that as you aren’t going to eat me.” Seonghwa decided. 

“What are you doing out here all by yourself?” Seonghwa asked. “You don’t have a collar and I don’t think anyone in the village has a cat. They like dogs more because they help the hunters in the village.” 

The cat meowed again. 

“I see.” Seonghwa replied. “Guess we’re both out here by ourselves.” 

The cat continued to purr, as if they were enjoying the conversation. 

“You don’t happen to know a red haired fae man?” Seonghwa asked randomly. 

The cat perked up and meowed again. 

“You do. Is the one who takes care of you?” 

The cat meowed again. 

Seonghwa snorted. “He seems like the cat type. Reminds me of a cat. But you’re a lot nicer than him.” 

The cat seemed to purr with pride as it curled up on Seonghwa’s chest. Seonghwa continued to pet the cat’s soft fur. The moment was almost peaceful. Long forgotten, the fear that Hongjoong had planted in Seonghwa’s mind was now replaced by the soft purring of this cat that has now decided to steal Seonghwa’s attention. 

“Wooyoung!” A voice called out in the distance. 

Seonghwa quickly sat up at the sound of the voice. He felt his heart drop at the sound of the new voice. Had Hongjoong decided to come and bother Seonghwa once again? Or was this something else. 

“Wooyoung!” The voice called out again.

The voice was deeper than what Seonghwa remembered Hongjoong’s voice being. The voice didn’t sound familiar to anyone that he knew in the village. Who was Wooyoung? 

The cat headbutted Seonghwa’s hand. He looked down at the cat as it rubbed his head against his hand. It was then that Seonghwa made a connection. 

“Wooyoung?” Seonghwa asked the cat. 

The cat looked up at Seonghwa as if it was responding to its name. 

Seonghwa chucked to himself. “I guess someone is looking for you.” 

The cat, Wooyoung, meowed at him. 

Finally, a man came out of the treeline. 

He was beautiful. Not in the way that Hongjoong was. This was like if you took a prince from the pages of a fairytale and brought him into the real world. His face was sharp and his eyes were a deep brown that seemed to hold knowledge. He wore very simple clothes but not in the way that Hongjoong did. A beige colored shirt with brown pants and a pair of worn boots. The sleeves of the shirt had been pushed up to the man’s elbows as if he had been working on something. His hair was a soft light brown that fell around his face and only added to his beauty. 

Seonghwa didn’t know what to say and by the confused look on the man’s face neither did he. 

Seonghwa held up the cat as if to show the man. “Are you looking for this one?” 

“Yes. I believe I am.” The man answered hesitantly, as if he wasn’t sure how to approach a stranger.  

The cat wriggled out of Seonghwa’s grasp and walked around Seonghwa as if he was teasing the man. 

The man let out an exasperated sigh. “Are you going to come with me or not?” 

Seonghwa gave him a confused look only to realize that the man was talking to the cat. The cat seemed to act as if the man wasn’t even there. 

“You run off without telling anyone and then I find you out here with a mortal, are you crazy?” The man asked the cat in an annoyed tone. 

Without telling anyone? Mortal? It suddenly made sense to Seonghwa. 

“You know Hongjoong, don’t you?” He asked, unsure of how the stranger would react. 

“How do you know Hongjoong?” The man asked. 

Seonghwa held up his wrist to show the emerald band that remained around it. 

“So you’re the mortal that made a deal with him.” The man said, almost as if he thought Seonghwa was an idiot for doing so.

Seonghwa gave the stranger an annoyed look. 

“I will give credit where credit is due on the name front though. Most mortal’s aren’t smart enough to think that far ahead when dealing with the fae.” 

“Just because I’m mortal doesn’t make me an idiot.” 

“I never said you were.” 

The man walked forward towards Seonghwa, making the physician start to back away. The man just gave him an icy look, almost disappointed at Seonghwa’s reaction to him. The man held out a hand to Seonghwa. 

“Yeosang.” The man introduced. 

Seonghwa hesitated, not entirely sure what to do. He had honestly lucked out with being able to know what Hongjoong was, though it wasn’t like the fae was trying to hide it. Seonghwa had no clue of what this man was capable of. 

“I’m not going to hurt you.” Yeosang answered as if reading his mind. “We all aren’t bad.” 

“I never said that.” Seonghwa argued. 

“You don’t have to say it.” 

“I apologize for being a little defensive when being met with a stranger alone in the woods.” 

Yeosang took a moment and gave a soft smile. “I suppose that is reason enough to be on guard.” 

“Your name is Mars, or at least that’s the name you gave Hongjoong.” A different voice spoke. 

Seonghwa turned around to where the cat once was only to find another man. His hair black as the cat's fur was, the same green eyes stared back at him. He had a wide smile on his face and a little mole right under one of his eyes. He wore a black tunic and pants with no shoes. 

Seonghwa stumbles back in surprise as he sees the newcomer. He heard Yeosang let out a sigh behind him. 

“I thought we were going to avoid scaring the mortal, Wooyoung.” Yeosang scolded. 

“He’s met Hongjoong, this is nothing.” Wooyoung replied. 

Seonghwa found himself floundering for what to say. “How did you- but you were the cat?” he muttered to himself. 

“I’m a shifter.” Wooyoung answers proudly. 

Seonghwa stares at him, clueless as to what he was talking about. 

“You know about fairies  but you don’t know about shifters?” Wooyoung questioned. 

Seonghwa shook his head no. 

Wooyoung let out a groan as he got to his feet. “And here I thought this mortal knew everything.” 

Yeosang let out a chuckle as Wooyoung came to stand next to him. The shorter of the two placed a kiss on Yeosang’s cheek, causing the man to blush seeing they were in the presence of someone who they weren’t all too familiar with. 

“He is smart but I doubt he’s an expert on mystics, Woo.” Yeosang said, as if Seonghwa wasn’t still standing right in front of the two. 

Seonghwa struggled to decide how to deal with the situation. Should he run? It didn’t seem like the two were going to hurt him in any way. They seemed to be nice or at least not actively trying to hurt him. 

“You can stop stressing we really aren’t going to hurt you.” Wooyoung tried to reassure. 

“Hongjoong asked us not to, he really likes messing with you.” Yeosang added bluntly.

Seonghwa rolled his eyes. “ I guess there's a silver lining in every situation.” He grumbled to himself. 

Yeosang and Wooyoung giggled, Seonghwa looked at them confused at what he had done that would cause the reaction from the pair. 

“You aren’t exactly what we thought you would be.” Wooyoung explained. 

“Can shifters read minds?” Seonghwa questioned in his head. 

“He can’t but I can.” Yeosang replied. 

Seonghwa’s eyes widened and a blush of embarrassment flushed across his face. 

Wooyoung gave Yeosang a small slap on the shoulder. “Stop, you’re freaking him out.” Wooyoung turns back to Seonghwa. “He can’t. Well sometimes he can depending on if he’s using a spell or not. San is the one who can actually read minds.” Wooyoung rambled. 

“How many of you are there here?” Seonghwa blurted out and instantly wanted the ground to swallow him. “I mean, sorry didn’t mean to come off so forward.” 

“Seven of us.” Wooyoung answered. “There’s me, Yeosang, San, Yunho, Mingi, Jongho, and you’ve met Hongjoong already.” 

“And you all live out here?” Seonghwa asked.

Wooyoung nodded. “We live in a cottage further into the woods. Maybe you could come by-” 

“That’s enough for the moment.” Yeosang interrupts. “It was nice meeting you but Wooyoung and I do have to get back to finish up some things.” 

Seonghwa smiles. “I understand, I have to get going myself.” 

“You should come back, we can tell you more about mystics.” Wooyoung offered. 

Seonghwa let out a small laugh at the man’s forwardness. “That sounds nice. It would be nice to have someone to talk to every once in a while. I don’t have many friends in the village.” 

Yeosang made a face of disgust. “I wouldn’t want to be friends with any of those people in the first place.”

“They aren’t all awful.” Seonghwa argued. 

Yeosang let out a hum, neither agreeing or disagreeing. “See you around, Mars.” 

“I guess I will.” 

Seonghwa watched as the two disappeared off into the woods, hoping to see the two again.
