Commissions
Tumblr media
I’ve decided to open commissions and see how that goes.
I’m willing to draw pets, OCs, plants, animals (including spiders), humans, fanart for private use only.
I will not draw anything explicit or gore.
Ask me first about illustrations for fic (and send me the AO3 link) and if you want to use the art in connection with a fandom event.
More details on the art styles shown above are listed under the read more (if you’re interested in something else, like a charcoal drawing, let me know and we talk about that.) There is also the option of “commission for the undecided”, which essentially works like a stockings event.
You will receive the art 2 - 3 weeks after I’ve received the payment in full.
Payment via paypal, all prices are in euros.
You can message me on tumblr or send me an email [email protected] if you want to commission me or have any questions.
Stick Figures:
Ink on paper, coloured, each stick figure drawing is ca. 4.5 x 4.5 cm
I’ll send you the physical art if you pay for shipping
Prices: 1 (on an A6 card): 7 euro, 3 (on an A5 card): 20 euro, 9 (3 x 3 on an A5 card): 50 euro, plus shipping
Payment is due after we agreed on the prompt(s)
This art style is not limited to stick figures, I have done this with dragons, too (like the one pictured above) and I’m open to ideas about other animals
Ink Study:
Ink on paper, sizes between A6 and A4, no background
Reference needs to be provided
Ink only: 20 - 40 euro, depending on complexity and size
Ink + colour: 30 - 50 euro, depending on complexity and size
Shipping the physical art is possible if you pay for it
Payment is due after we agreed on the reference
Digital Drawing:
Portrait (head + shoulders, simple background) of one character/person/pet based on a reference we both agree on: 50 euro (plus 20 euros for each additional character/person/pet)
Illustration (without background): 50 - 70 euro, depending on complexity, plus 20 - 30 euro for a full and detailed background
1/2 payment is due after we agreed on the idea and before I start the sketch(es), the rest is due after you approved the final sketch
sketches take about a week
Doodle:
A quick and simple doodle, ink on paper, colour optional
Price: 5 euro, payment due before I start drawing
takes 1 - 2 days
Commission for the undecided (Surprise me):
You would love a piece of art specifically made for you by me, but you have no clear idea of what exactly it is you want?
I’m happy to create digital illustrations, doodles, or stick figures based on very vague prompts like a colour palette, a mood, or “can you draw me something fluffy involving my favourite animal, an octopus” as long as you give me enough information to not accidentally hit one of your DNWs. I can aso give you a list with ideas to choose from.
For prices look at the information above.

Hiya, I love your work and was just wondering if you have any plans to publish it/have it available in physical form at any point? I really enjoy reading your work, but rather struggle to do so on my phone, so would be over the moon to one day buy physical copies.
Hope you have a good day! :)
At this moment I don't have resources, money or space for printed copies, not to mention shipping fees from Finland are pretty astronomical. I don't think there would be much buyers once they hear that the cheapest shipping for a one comic is 30 euro (30USD) outside Europe.
As for finances, I live alone and pay everything alone without safety nets outside the income I can get, so whatever I earn goes to my living expenses. Grow funding is illegal in Finland as I have said many times (you can google more about this).
All these combined together is the reason I don't have any merch available either.
The best I can do is a PDF-book at some point (and for merch some stickers). But someday in the future, a physical book is something I wish to do.

Bitcoin Mining – Buy Low Mine High
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, I have been active in the crypto industry for over 10 years, and one aspect of Bitcoin that has always fascinated me is mining. Bitcoin mining is the backbone of the network, where machines solve complex calculations in search of new Bitcoins. Bitcoin mining is the process of creating new bitcoins and verifying transactions on the Bitcoin network. At the end of the article, you will find more technical explanations about mining, but I don't want to bore everyone with that. During my crypto career, mining has come across my path several times as an option to invest in or get more involved with. However, it never became concrete due to significant drawbacks such as: - Expensive electricity. - Noise and heat. - High investment costs, as there is more to it than just miners. - Maintenance and equipment monitoring. Afterward, I explored the phenomenon of cloud mining, but in 70% of cases, it's a scam, and in the other 30% of cases, it's too expensive and not profitable. These companies are also not resilient during a bear market because they finance mining machines themselves and rent out hashrate (computational power). They buy machines with the risk of a Bitcoin price drop and don't earn enough during a bear market. Explanation of Cloud mining: Cloud mining is a service where individuals rent computing power from companies to mine cryptocurrencies on their behalf. They don't need to own or manage the hardware themselves. The cloud mining provider handles the mining operations and distributes rewards to participants based on their rented computing power. It's a way for people to mine cryptocurrencies without the need for expensive equipment or technical expertise. When that option was ruled out, there were fewer and fewer mining options left. But in reality, I also want to do something with it through the crypto guide. Recently, through an acquaintance, I met someone who offers the solution I was looking for. That person is Mitchell Weijerman from Epic Mining. He offers the opportunity to purchase mining equipment through Epic Mining, which you buy in bulk with him and other customers at a favorable rate. Through Epic Mining, you buy a Bitcoin miner that is shipped to you, and within 6-8 weeks, it starts mining for you with an electricity rate of 5.5 cents, including hosting, security, and maintenance (even more). You receive a monthly invoice with this 0.052 Euro (0.055 USD) per KWH based on what your mining equipment has consumed. This can also be done quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. However, your profits are paid out daily, and you can accumulate Bitcoin and pay the costs later and, in the best-case scenario, pay with fiat money (credit card) or another method and leave the Bitcoin untouched. This way, you can accumulate Bitcoin inexpensively for when the price 'explodes,' which traditionally happens 7 months after a halving. This can be a mega-interesting earning model if you believe in price increases. Mitchell came up with the nice quote, "Buy low, mine high." This refers to buying machines at a low cost, keeping the costs as low as possible, and maximizing profits during a bull market. Sign up for the Bitcoin Mining Q&A that is hosted on the 17th of january 2024 at 7pm: BlackRock and Bitcoin Mining: A Sustainable Combination? BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, has recently announced that it is adding Bitcoin mining to its portfolio. Why has BlackRock made this decision, and what are the benefits of this strategy? BlackRock sees Bitcoin mining as a good investment for several reasons. First, BlackRock believes in the future of Bitcoin as an alternative to traditional currencies and as a hedge against inflation. By investing in Bitcoin mining, BlackRock can increase its exposure to the crypto market and profit from the rising demand for Bitcoins. Second, BlackRock sees Bitcoin mining as an opportunity to become more sustainable. BlackRock has committed to reducing its ecological footprint and supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy. Bitcoin mining can contribute to this by using renewable energy sources such as solar energy, wind energy, or hydropower. BlackRock can thus reduce its electricity costs while simultaneously contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions. Therefore, BlackRock has discovered that Bitcoin mining is a good investment, both financially and ecologically. Bitcoin mining allows BlackRock to benefit from the growing crypto market and achieve its sustainability goals. BlackRock is a major shareholder in 4 of the 5 largest Bitcoin mining companies. How Does Epic Mining Achieve Such "Super-Low" Rates? By mining in favorable areas abroad near various hydro dams for cheap and green energy. In addition, they are situated in a mining facility where over 80,000 devices are located, which is about 5% of the total global mining. This results in extremely low rates due to the joint procurement of all facilities with other mining farms. Benefits of Mining via Epic Mining: - No noise or heat. - Low energy rates. - Purchasing only Bitcoin miners. - No maintenance. - No headaches. - Everything is taken care of for you. All you have to do is watch your wealth grow and pay the electricity bill once every 1, 3, or 6 months. Why Mine Instead of Buying Bitcoin? You should see it like this: With Bitcoin mining, you can produce Bitcoin below the production cost. The higher the price of Bitcoin becomes, the more profit you can realize because your production costs are below the market value. So, if you believe that Bitcoin will reach 100k or 200k in the next 2, 3, 4 years, then Bitcoin mining becomes exponentially more interesting than buying Bitcoin. As the price of Bitcoin rises, the costs to buy it also increase. Meanwhile, with mining, you can produce them below the market price. That's the game that's played with mining. What Is the Bitcoin Price Based On? Factors that increase demand for Bitcoin: - The failure of the traditional financial system. - There is more and better education available. - Network effects. - Bitcoin is the best-performing asset of the decade/ever. - Countries are buying Bitcoin. - Companies are adding Bitcoin to their treasuries. - Large investment funds are buying Bitcoin. Factors that make Bitcoin scarcer: - The new supply of Bitcoin is halved every four years (halvings). - Holders are not selling but buying. - Large mining companies have better access to financing, so they no longer need to sell their BTC to fund their operations. As demand increases and supply becomes scarcer, this can mean only one thing in my opinion. In my opinion, it can only mean one thing: the price will rise! What traditionally happens after a halving? - After the market crashed in 2010, the price of Bitcoin skyrocketed by 11,645%. - After the market crashed in 2014, the price of Bitcoin increased by 7,382%. - After the market crashed in 2017, the price of Bitcoin rose by 1,991%. Sign up for the Bitcoin Mining Q&A that is hosted on the 17th of january 2024 at 7pm: Earnings Calculation Example: Of course, we all want to know what it can ultimately yield. These are examples based on the Bitcoin price. The total profit is per machine after 4 years, taking the halving into account. Make your own calculation with this spreadsheet by changing the number of machines and the spreadsheet will do the rest. Scenario 1 is live price (current price) and the others are everything up until 150k BTC. In-depth explanation of Bitcoin mining. Bitcoin mining is the process of creating new bitcoins and verifying transactions on the Bitcoin network. It is a crucial part of the cryptocurrency's infrastructure. Bitcoin operates on a decentralized network, meaning there is no central authority controlling the currency. Instead, transactions are verified by a network of computers (nodes) spread across the world. Miners are participants in this network who use specialized hardware and software to solve complex mathematical problems and validate transactions. Here is a simplified explanation of the mining process: - Transaction Verification: When someone initiates a Bitcoin transaction, it is broadcast to the network. Miners collect these transactions into blocks. - Hashing: Miners compete to solve a mathematical puzzle known as a cryptographic hashing function by repeatedly guessing a specific value (nonce) until the desired outcome is achieved. The hashing process converts the block of transactions into a unique string called a hash. The computational power of miners plays a role in increasing their chances of finding the correct nonce and solving the puzzle. - Proof of Work: The successful miner who solves the puzzle broadcasts the newly mined block to the network. Other miners then verify the validity of the block and its transactions. - Block Addition: Once the block is verified, it is added to the existing blockchain, creating a permanent and immutable record of transactions. Miners receive a reward for their work in the form of newly minted bitcoins and transaction fees from the transactions in the block. It's important to note that the mining process becomes progressively more challenging over time due to the design of the Bitcoin network, which adjusts the difficulty of the mathematical puzzle to ensure that new blocks are added approximately every 10 minutes, regardless of the total computing power of the network. Bitcoin mining requires significant computing power and electricity. Therefore, specialized hardware called ASICs (Application-Specific Integrated Circuits) is often used to mine bitcoins efficiently. Additionally, mining farms with numerous ASICs are often set up in locations with cheap electricity to maximize profitability. Overall, Bitcoin mining plays a vital role in securing the Bitcoin network, verifying transactions, and introducing new bitcoins into circulation. Bitcoin mining is divided among various companies that manage mining pools, which are groups of miners who share their computing power and distribute rewards. - Foundry USA: Based in the United States, with 30% of the network's hash rate. Foundry USA is a subsidiary of Foundry Digital, a company that provides equipment financing and advisory services for mining to institutional investors and enterprises. - Antpool: Based in China, with 23% of the network's hash rate. Antpool is owned by Bitmain, one of the largest manufacturers of Bitcoin mining hardware and chips. - F2Pool: Also based in China, with 18% of the network's hash rate. F2Pool is one of the oldest Bitcoin mining pools, established in 2013. - Poolin: Another Chinese pool, with 12% of the network's hash rate. Poolin was founded in 2017 by former Bitmain employees. - Slush Pool: Based in the Czech Republic, with 7% of the network's hash rate. Slush Pool is the first Bitcoin mining pool, launched in 2010. These five pools account for approximately 90% of the total Bitcoin mining power, meaning they have a significant influence on the security and decentralization of the network. hiii!! i love seeing your collection, do you have any recommendations of websites etc for hunting down p5 merch? im outside the usa so things like mercari arent an option for me unfortunately T_T
Hi! I have many but some might be more or less effective depending on Where outside of the US you are. As I am Canadian, my options are a lot more feasible than say... someone from Europe yk. (god shipping fees are insane)
I will say, a huge chunk of my collection was bought off of Mercari or American Ebay, or American stores like BigBadToyStore and I just wanna make that clear. Two of these sites ship to places outside of the US still, but it's so much cheaper to get it sent to American friend and then over to me.
This got longer than I thought whoops under the cut it goes.
Anyway onto the actual recs. As always I have to shill Myfigurecollection.net. You can sort by the exact figure you're looking for, local currency, free or paid shipping and it's really handy. On top of that you can interact with the sites database or forum features! Make a wishlist or a list of a fave character's merch you want. Track what you've ordered already and when it's expected to arrive or be released from preorder. Find forum posts from your region about people discussing good places to buy from and so much more. It's such a huge and amazing tool for someone into collecting so long as you can get over the UI. Personally I've never found issues with it but I'm used to how older websites work anyway.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Here is me sorting by European currency. There are so many euro sellers im jealous.)
Pros of mfc:
• Figures are usually in good condition and can even be mint in box. (you can even sort by condition, wow!)
• users are polite and can be negotiated with for a better deal oftentimes
Cons of mfc:
• This is not a site that focuses solely on selling like ebay, it's more like an ad section in the newspaper
• You have to trust who you are buying from as there's no 'insurance' so to speak. If you get scammed, there's no refunds and mods won't help you aside from banning the user, unlike actual buy and sell sites which have policies or insurance.
Next up is Zenmarket. This is a proxy site that allows me to buy straight from japan! What's handy about it is that you can browse multiple japanese sites straight within zenmarket's site. I can pick up items from Amazon.jp, JP Mercari, and Yahoo Auctions and have 'em all in one cart! You can also paste links into a special search bar if you've found a specific item you'd like to buy from a JP site. I personally browse JP Mercari and Rakuma the most. I like second-hand figures and both these places have good deals since they're flea-market esque sites. Yahoo!Auctions I've only bought one thing from, and I haven't had a *bad* experience per se, I just don't like auctions and buyout prices lol. Always so pricey... but I'm sure there's good deals to be had if you're willing to do a bidding battle. Pro tip! Search with japanese terms to get better results.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Browsing a listing and the main mercari page, unsorted)
Zenmarket hasn't let me down before. They're speedy, and all my stuff has been well packed.
Pros:
• Can get the best base prices buying straight from japan
• Super simple layout and bundling orders is really easy
•Items can be held in their warehouse for 45 days if something happens/you wanna wait before bundling it into a package. You can also pay to extend this time.
•Quick shipping from the warehouse
•probably more lol
Cons
•If you're not american, shipping is gonna be like $30 CAD lol. At least you can fit multiple items in one box...? I got 2 books and several t-shirts without going over the small packet limit. i haven't used zennarket express, but if your shit is very small i think its about 10 dollars cheaper.
• ¥300 yen fee per item batch. So if I get a figure and book from Mercari I'll have to pay a ¥300 fee. If I then add something from Amazon or a different site other than Mercari to my cart, I'll have to pay another ¥300 fee. I don't mind this as its like what. 3 dollars? but if you're buying a lot from all over it can potentially rack up shit. also ppl just dont like fees so it's a con.
I also of course use ebay. I feel like I don't need to get into how ebay works so onto BRAND NEW MERCH CONDITION sitessss
I used to use Aitai Kuji but their selection of stuff is kinda mid these days so I stray from it. I've had good experiences with Ukiyo Kumo but it has a similar problem with Aitai Kuji.
Another site for brand-new merch is Meccha Japan, but holy fuck I hate their shipping and prices. If something becomes low in stock they jack up the price and label it as 'rare' or ultra rare or whatever and I find that irritating. They also use fedex and dhl for shipping which means fun fees woohoo yipee!!! i had to spend over 100 dollars to get my package wrangled from their graaaaaasp!!!!
So yeah, sorry for lame New Merch recs, I don't really buy brand-new figures since P5 hasn't released anything lately. I bought the Hello!Goodsmile mona and joker from BigBadToystore and I think shipping was only 15 usd? I like BBTS but if you're not american they're kinda slow in the shipping department.
I probably have more reccs but I can't think of any so. enjoy this. Anon if you wanna talk more thoroughly about this feel free to dm me! Talking about this stuff makes me so happy it's my lifeblood ♪♪

Speaking of football kits, I appreciate that some countries are doing separate designs for men and women's team but at the same time it makes it harder for me to buy the women's ones at the stores? I wanted to buy the Sweden one and the yellow hoodie but my local adidas decided that they will sell Germany, Spanish and Belgium gear, just not the Swedish one :) I was so close to sending them an email asking why. I just wanna buy things without having to pay an outrageous amount of shipping fee for some already expensive products. Wish those sites selling replicas will make replicas for women's kits as well...
YES I completely agree with this!! Like I love that the women have their own kit, especially when there is thought put into it, but access is a problem. When I went to my first Sweden game, I wanted to get a shirt like 1.5 months in advance and I couldn't find the women's one anywhere so I had to get the men's shirt. Luckily though, it's always getting better and I can buy the euros kit from my adidas. Still super annoying that the only training/travel kit they have is the tshirt and I really want the sweatshirt (also they have the full range for Spain and Germany which is annoying)
Another thing that made me really mad is that the flagship adidas store in London didn't carry any of the Sweden products despite having a huge Euros display. The most annoying part was how they were advertising free printing with any women's euros shirt but when I asked about Sweden, they said they only got printing for the men's euros the year before and wouldn't restock unless there was another (men's) tournament.
Some of the replica sites do sell women's kits too though! Not all but some do, I've seen quite a few euros ones and even the old sweden shirt. Also, since you mentioned the hoodie and shirt, unisport are really great with all that and they even have the hoodie 30% off right now! I'm pretty sure they ship worldwide (other than the UK lol) so have a look there

The Boat was Rocking
It was time to leave the Peloponnese and head to the island of Folegandros. Prior to that we wanted to look at the archeological museum in Nafplio and we also had to return the car to Piraeus the port of Athens from where all the ferries leave. Liz had timed it to all fit together. Car due back in Piraeus at 1.30 with a half hour leeway and ferry leaves for Folegandros at 3.45pm. Two hour drive to Piraeus so we wanted to be on the road by 11.15. We headed for breakfast at 8.30 and had a very pleasant one in the main square with just a few people around at that time. Headed for the museum post that and we were the only visitors in there. It is a really attractive building dating from 1713 in the Venetian style. It was very imposing. The first thing we saw which had been the real drawcard was a midden which was 32000 years old (you don't get a chance to see something that old very often) used by hunter gathererer cave dwellers in the region. Looking up the word midden it appears to be some sort of dump for all sorts of domestic waste which might be human excrement, animal bones, shells, molluscs, charcoal could be anything. Presumably the archaeologists gave it the once over and found all sorts of goodies or possibly baddies in there. In truth it looked like some flattened clay so imagination required. Though not too much. I didn't want to contemplate some ancient cave dweller squatting over the midden (though now I am). The rest of the exhibits were very interesting with a lot of artefacts which had been placed in the tombs of eminent people. Also examples of tools and weapons which showed the transition from hunters to other forms of "economy" and survival. Exhibits ranged mostly in age from 6000 BC to around 400 AD but some much older and covered everything from ornate urns and jugs (which were fantastically reconstructed), figurines, jewellery, tools and a suit of armour from 1500 BC which did not look very manoeuvrable. You felt that anyone inside it would be a sitting duck though it would have taken some penetration. Had a touch of the Monty Pythons. We stayed for around an hour and I think someone else rolled up to visit in that time which was just as we all as the 6/7 staff needed something to do given the museum was only on two not huge floors. We headed back and scurried around packing. Liz keeping a very watchful eye on the time and my intricate packing and ablution procedures. The time was called out at 5 minute intervals. It seemed to work as we head off in the car at 11.19 (precisely). Four minutes late, not bad, in fact in my book that's early. The journey was uneventful with a mix of freeway and standard roads. You can do 130km/hr on some stretches of the freeway so that was handy to keep on schedule. You have to stop for tolls every 20/30kms or so which is usually around 2 euros which slow things down a little. The biggest deal at the end was finding a petrol station. I had bypassed the last one so was not popular. We had to roll up at thrifty/hertz and ask for directions - very handy as station was around the corner. Interestingly when we picked the car up it had been left on half full as they said they had not had time to fill it up. We dubiously wondered if this was another lurk as it's pretty hard to return a car on half full. You are bound to go over. We pondered the various ways that dosh could be made on this but perhaps it was genuine. When you believe there's a conspiracy it's usually incompetence. Never ever happened before though in other countries. We handed the car back around 1.45 as close to half full as we could manage so all good and I must say the staff were very friendly and helpful. Now for the ferry. Piraeus is a pretty large passenger ferry port. There seemed to be around 10 or more quays and perhaps more that we couldn't see and they are spread out around a sort of horseshoe bay with a distance of a kilometre or two (hard to tell) covering them. We set off wheeling our bags with back packs on and it was pretty warm but we weren't 100% sure which quay we had to go to though had an idea. Anyway after about 20 mins of wheeling with a few stops including to buy some savoury pastries we entered a gate and were directed to the kiosk of the shipping line we were using. Now around 2.15. Ferry due to leave at 3.45. Of course we had walked past the kiosk on our way so were now doubling back through the heat but had found where we needed to be so didn't care. Not good news, ferry was running late. They weren't sure why but later said it was the weather and certainly the wind was very strong which wasn't filling us with joyous anticipation for the trip. It would be arriving at around 5.00pm. Leaving, some time after that, typically a half hour turn around so we were told. Nothing to do but head for some covered shelters to get out of the sun, eat our pastries and settle down for a long wait. 5.00pm became 6.10 and the ferry finally rolled up around then. Around that time proceedings descended into farce as another ferry from the same shipping line came in first at a slightly different dock nearby. All those waiting for the Folegandros ferry including us scooted over to that ferry, watched cars and people unload only to be told that we needed to go back to the original spot and wait - it wasn't ours. There was scurrying as everyone tried to get good positions to be on early. This presumably was because some did not have reserved seats and wanted to find the pick of the unreserved seats. We had reserved a couple of seats though our last experience on a ferry to Sardinia had been that reserved seats were not reserved seats and people commandeered them. So we were playing it sort of safe and trying to make sure we were not at the rear end of the line. As our ferry approached people moved from side to side 30 or 40 metres trying to anticipate and partly as directed by staff as to where the ramp would actually be. Imagine a couple of hundred people moving back and forth with suitcases, kids and various holiday paraphernalia all in still warm sun. It was quite something and we for our part were trying to stay reasonably at the front too. To add to the confusion a large petrol tanker was right in the midst of us presumably ready to refuel the ferry and had to reverse causing more chaos. We chatted to an amusing guy from New York and his wife who was good naturedly bemoaning the fact that as we stood in the queue he was supposed to be at a beach birthday party on one of the earlier island stops for this ferry. He and his wife had flown from America to specifically make this event. The best laid plans. Still he said the party would still be going when he got there. Finally around 6.30 the ferry started to unload people followed by cars while some onboarders rushed up the ramp against the flow of offboarders trying to stake their spots. This sent the officials into minor apoplexy and these people were stopped at the top of the ramp while disembarkation finished. We all then put our heads down and rushed up. Elbows weren't quite out but there were no beg pardons. Luckily I was with someone who can handle herself in the clinches and Liz beat me up the ramp hands down. One good reason to be up the ramp relatively early was that the formal storage racks for bags soon ran out though in truth people then just stored their bags alongside them and it didn't seem to be a problem. Also the ferry had several stops at different islands and theoretically each island had a separate storage section. We ignored that as clearly did plenty of others and chucked ours where there was a space. All worked well. Finally we had to negotiate the narrow doorway where tickets were checked with a couple of hundred people trying to be first through but from there the bedlam ceased. Our reserved seats were very comfortable. In a separate section with a hundred or so others though the seating was not full. An attendant checked tickets so no one could take your spot. I immediately shot to the bar and they actually did vodka and tonic which Liz was v pleased about after 4 frustrating hours of sitting on our hands preceded by a 2 hour + drive. I enjoyed a couple of cleansing ales too of course and we settled back to await departure. Of course the boat took another hour and a quarter to depart so finally left around 7.45pm - 4 hours late. Thems the travel breaks sometimes. A bit aggravating apart from the boredom of hanging around. It meant we lost the latter part of the evening and a decent dinner in town in Folegandros. Also we were paying essentially for a bed for a night and Folegandros prices not that cheap. If you knew that you would be arriving so late you would stay at the $50 a night job at the port, assuming it existed, though we reconciled ourselves that with a 1.45 am ferry arrival finding a hotel would have been impossible. Anyway, very efficiently, staff at the apartments where we were staying pick you up from the port and much to our relief after a 6 hour journey due to the rocky weather one was there to transfer us to our digs. The boat trip because of the strong wind did cause a bit of seasickness. There was a lot of side to side rocking. I managed to stay OK though felt a tad uncomfortable from time to time but Liz felt a bit queasy though through a mix of sleep and willpower managed to hold things off and we arrived without any technicolor events. You get these days from time to time. Not much you can do but go into some waiting zone, google, write blogs, go for walks, chat. We had left our hotel in Napflio at 11.20 am and arrived at our new one just after 2.00am. 15 hours. The ferry mob were apologetic and free cokes came round and we were told we could all claim a free ferry ride in the future. Do they do Tasmania? We crawled into bed.

Bonjour mes amis,
I feel like a scene in a movie. We wake up to the birds singing, and oddly enough they sound identical to the birds on Marty's phone alarm. Perhaps they were the inspiration for the alarm, a sunny morning in Paris. Today we only have one task to complete and then the day is ours to simply enjoy. No plans, no reservations, no agenda, just live in the moment and enjoy, the sights, smells, sounds, and feeling of Paris on a lazy day.
But first let's get the one task out of the way, our COVID test to return to the United States. The good news is that the 24 hour pharmacy less than 500 meters away provides testing for 20 Euros. We stroll over, fill out the form, pay the fee, and then enter a cargo create on the street with a stranger. It's like an action movie and this is how we go missing. A quick nose swab and we're done. Results in 30 minutes or so and they will be emailed. If we don't get the email within 2 hours stop back and they will print a copy.
Task done, now what to do? Seems logical that we should get something to eat. Marty has been the king of locations and found another popular breakfast spot. It's about an hour walk away and with the sun shining we opt to walk instead of the Metro. The streets are coming to life, the markets are opening up, and everyone just seems happy. We get to the spot and they don't offer the virtual queue. We just line up and are advised it could be an hour.
No worries, we have the day. While in line our results come back. We're all three negative we can fly home tomorrow! We use the time to upload to the FlyReady site to check in. Of course it won't let us check in but at least everything shows green and ready for departure.
The restaurant is small and adorable in shades of pink. There are only 15 tables and although a space between them, it's very New York style, people have to move to be seated. We all order different items and they are all delicious, from Tyler's berries and chocolate chip french toast, to Marty's mango and coconut pancakes, and then my savory eggs, and bacon pancakes.
We make our way out onto the street. Tyler would like to exercise his independence and wants to wander Paris without us old guys. It is his trip, so we tell him to go and enjoy and we will see him later today. I guess now it's just Marty and me. What to do? We opted to head to one of the largest markets in Europe to see what we can find. It's not easy to get to and it a bus ride, but we make it to Saint Ouen flea market. Yes it's several blocks long and deep. We stroll the small alleyways and see things like art, mirrors, silver, jewelry, really everything. We even see a 1960's modular home that is in the shape of a space ship, so cool.
You can get lost in here and after a few hours we decide we've seen enough. We did find one shop that we could have spent a fortunate in, well actually several, but it's a good thing we have limited space to fly home. Saved us a lot of money.
From here with such amazing weather we decide to stroll up to Sacré-Cœur again. The streets are full and the steps up steep but we need the excercise after having dessert for breakfast. We make it to the top and stroll to the steps. We find a seat and just take it all in. The street performers today are busy and I'm mesmerized with a guy with a soccer ball on the edge doing all sorts of tricks. He truly is amazing from handstands to climbing lamp polls all will doing tricks with the ball. It's cool to see so many young people fan boying out with him for a picture afterwards. I hope he makes a good wage doing this, he is incredibly talented.
After awhile of looking at the city we decide to stroll back down. We find a cafe along the canal and stop for a coffee/tea. I'm so lucky to be with someone that shares the same interests and passions. I feel like a romance film about falling in love both in and with Paris.
Time to check in with Tyler and see if he would like to join us for dinner. He said he would prefer to be out and about and thanked us for the invitation. So okay we're on our own for dinner. We passed a Mexican restaurant and it smelled fantastic. We pull up a seat outside and figure it must be good, everyone around us is speaking Spanish. It was delicious and we do love our Horchata. The part that they didn't really capture though is the heat. The level was very Minnesota spicy. None, but it was good, filling, and best of all very reasonably priced.
We decide to walk back to the hotel along the canal. This then turns to parks. We stumble upon a bocce tournament. They are playing hard core and teams have numbers and the tournament board. We stand and just watch them play in awe. What a great way to spend the evening. We then continue on and see people working out in the park, strolling and enjoying the flowers, even with a bee sighting.
Marty suggests that we finish the day with a stop to our neighborhood boulangerie. They are getting ready to close up, but are helpful in making our decisions for dessert. Marty gets and Apple tart and I select the berry. It's now time to head back to the room, enjoy our treats and get packed. It's not the earliest morning tomorrow, but no sleeping in for us.
We get packed up and get everything in place for the morning. I check the website to make sure the RER B is running to the airport as it wasn't when we came in and the site says yes. With that, a final look out the window at the skyline and park. It's been an incredible week. I've learned so much about my nephew and I hope he will remember this trip and light a passion to explore and see the world. I also have fallen in love with France and can't wait to come back and explore more. There is so much yet to see and do. Thank you for joining us on this whirlwind trip through some of Western Europe. I guess I now need to add French to the long list of languages I need to learn. Adieu Paris and France I look forward to our return. Bonne nuit.

In addition to other things, Financial Trader offers a Forex application that gives you admittance to all venture devices.
Why Fx exchanging?
In spite of the dangers, the Fxtrading market is developing quickly. Obviously, numerous Forex Traders have reached the resolution that the advantages exceed the dangers.
Here is a short rundown of why individuals are drawn to forex exchanging and auto exchanging .
A 24-hour market. There is no initial check in Fx exchanging! You can shop from late Sunday evening (US an opportunity) to late Friday night. You can go back and forth however you see fit, shop as long or as short as you prefer.
Low edge, High influence. Maybe the most alluring component for Fx exchanging is the capacity to exchange with influence from 10: 1 up to 400: 1! This implies you can handle $ 100,000 with from $ 10,000 to just $ 250. With high influence , a tiny move can prompt 100% benefit or misfortune. Continuously expanding influence can likewise be a viable instrument for cash the board.

No Provisions. There are generally no clearing expenses, no trade charges, no administration expenses and no commissions. In forex, a bid/ask spread works and the expenses are remembered for it. Notwithstanding, some Forex representatives who utilize the electronic correspondences organization (ECN) exchange may likewise charge a little expense.
Volatility. For instance, markets can move rapidly and strongly; Profits can be immense in the event that you are directly in your value estimate.
The measure of Currency sets. There are in excess of 30 money matches and crosses exchanged, albeit a large portion of the volume is moved in about portion of these. Numerous forex dealers guarantee that individual couples and crosses have characters and attributes that help them make conjectures.
Not identified with the securities exchange. Monetary forms ordinarily move autonomously of the securities exchange, despite the fact that there has been a nearby connection during the monetary emergency in 2008 when offers were utilized as a proportion of hazard avoidance. From a speculation viewpoint, trade rates are not connected with stock costs. Thusly, Fxtrading can be an alluring speculation for a bigger financial exchange account.
Limited Regulation. Since Forex is a worldwide interbank organization, guideline is essentially restricted. This can, obviously, cut the two different ways, as referenced prior.
No Insider Trading. It is hard to get valuable insider data about monetary forms. Regardless of whether you knew ahead of time that a key government measurement, the business sectors are erratic to the point that it isn’t regularly simple to anticipate what direction the market will pursue a public statement, for instance.
How to exchange the Foreign Exchange Market?
The solitary way a private Forex Trader can exchange cash sets in the unfamiliar trade market is through a purported Fxtrading Broker. At that point it relies upon the kind of Forex representative this one will by the same token:
Represent liquidity on the lookout (Market Maker), where both the purchase and sell cost are set by the fx agent.
Offer the Forex Trader an immediate admittance to the unfamiliar trade market globally.
Regardless, a cash exchanging account should be made with the representative to begin exchanging with money sets.
The most well-known is that Fxtrading conducts through supposed CFD Trading (Contract for Difference) which is offered by the entirety of our recorded money agents. At the present time, digital currency exchanging is additionally unbelievably well known. With Bitcoin’s set of experiences, an ever increasing number of financial backers have decided to purchase bitcoin in 2021.
How is Fxtrading not quite the same as Aktiehandel?
Numerous financial backers wrongly accept that fxtrading works similarly as exchanging stocks on the stock trade. This is very a long way from the real world. The contrasts between forex exchanging and stock exchanging are as per the following:
Offers are exchanged actual offers by an organization that you pay for in real money, with cash exchanging it is exchanged sets as CFDs.
The Forex market is a decentralized market without a focal trade, where all Forex merchants and exchanges are secret.
For instance, exchanging doesn’t need a significant venture, while the chance to get an influence can give you an exceptional yield, in contrast to the securities exchange, which moderately requires a bigger speculation to have the option to make a bigger benefit.
Know that forex exchanging isn’t a speculation like stock exchanging, where you own the fundamental resource. At the point when you estimate through CFDs, it is the future worth of the hidden resource that you “contribute” in. So to call CFD exchanging a speculation isn’t altogether right.
How do I learn Fx Trading?
We prescribe novices to eg exchanging to rehearse through a forex demo record in the first place. At the point when you at that point feel prepared, you can begin opening situations with genuine capital. To have the option to prevail as a Forex Trader, it takes both determination and time. This is on the grounds that you need to understand what influences trade rates, just as learn different eg exchanging techniques, which increment your odds of effective Forex exchanging.
Which Fx exchanging intermediary is best for me?
With regards to Fx exchanging on the web, it very well may be troublesome which fx dealer suits your necessities. That is the reason all the Forex intermediaries that you find recorded with us have met every one of our assessments on the accompanying focuses:
Is there help in English and Swedish?
Is support accessible on ends of the week and nights?
The expense of exchanging with the merchant?
Do you need to pay an expense while pulling out your cap

Global Cactus Traffickers Are Cleaning Out the Deserts
A recent raid in Italy involving rare Chilean species highlights the growing scale of a black market in the thorny plants.
— By Rachel Nuwer | May 20, 2021 | The New York Times

Andrea Cattabriga has seen a lot of cactuses where they didn’t belong. But he’d never seen anything like Operation Atacama, a bust carried out last year in Italy. A cactus expert and president of the Association for Biodiversity and Conservation, Mr. Cattabriga often helps the police identify the odd specimen seized from tourists or intercepted in the post.
This time, however, Mr. Cattabriga was confronted by a stunning display: more than 1,000 of some of the world’s rarest cactuses, valued at over $1.2 million on the black market.
Almost all of the protected plants had come from Chile, which does not legally export them, and some were well over a century old. The operation — which occurred in February 2020, but is being made public now because of the cactuses’ recent return to Chile — was most likely the biggest international cactus seizure in nearly three decades. It also highlights how much money traffickers may be earning from the trade.
Seeing the collected cactuses brought a profound sadness to Mr. Cattabriga.
“Here is an organism that has evolved over millions of years to be able to survive in the harshest conditions you can find on the planet, but that finishes its life in this way — just as an object to be sold,” he said.
As with the market for tiger bones, ivory, pangolin scales and rhino horn, a flourishing illegal global trade exists for plants. “Just about every plant you can probably think of is trafficked in some way,” said Eric Jumper, a special agent with the Fish and Wildlife Service. Cactuses and other succulents are among the most sought after, along with orchids and, increasingly, carnivorous species.
Trafficking can take a serious toll. Over 30 percent of the world’s nearly 1,500 cactus species are threatened with extinction. Unscrupulous collection is the primary driver of that decline, affecting almost half of imperiled species. Yet this realm of illegal trade is typically overlooked, a prime example of “plant blindness,” or the human tendency to broadly ignore this important branch on the tree of life.
“The basic functioning of the planet would effectively grind to a halt without plants, but people care more about animals,” said Jared Margulies, a geographer at the University of Alabama who studies plant trafficking. “A lot of plant species are not receiving the amount of attention they would be if they had eyes and faces.”
Yet the size of Operation Atacama could be a notable exception. It is also the largest known example of cactuses stolen from the wild being repatriated for reintroduction into their native habitat.
Experts also hope the case can be a turning point for how countries, collectors, conservationists and the industry deal with the thorny issue of international cactus trafficking.
“Society as a whole can no longer continue to have a naïve view of this problem,” said Pablo Guerrero, a botanist at the University of Concepción in Chile.
Passion For Rarity

Cactuses and other succulents are hot business today. They have become the darlings of social media, promoted by indoor plant influencers for their outlandish looks and minimal care requirements. The pandemic only increased their popularity, with shops struggling to keep some species in stock.
The average hipster’s cactus collection will include only common species propagated in nurseries. But for some specialist collectors — who tend to be middle-aged or older men — the hobby is much more serious.
“A lot of what drives the interest and passion for these plants is their uniqueness and rarity,” said Bárbara Goettsch, co-chair of the Cactus and Succulent Plant Specialist Group at the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Many cactus species are highly localized, found, for example, only on certain steep limestone cliffs in Mexico, or a single sandy patch of less than one square mile on Peru’s coast. They also tend to be extremely slow-growing. Larger specimens, which are more highly sought after, can be decades or even hundreds of years old. These features make cactuses particularly sensitive to over-harvesting, but also particularly attractive to collectors interested in exclusivity.
Purchasing rare species legally, however, can be difficult to impossible. All cactuses and many other types of succulents require permits to be traded internationally, if they can be legally traded at all. Most countries also prohibit collection of some or all of these species from the wild, including the United States.
“For all cactuses, you cannot collect them off public land, period,” Mr. Jumper said. “Catching people in the field actually collecting cactuses takes quite a bit of luck, though, because they collect in some vast areas.”
Once cactuses are poached from the wild, illicit trade often happens in the open. High-end plant shops in Japan display protected, wild-harvested species, while sellers around the world advertise them on eBay, Instagram, Etsy and Facebook. Online ads are often accompanied by disclaimers that the cactuses do not come with necessary permits for legal trade, and poachers sometimes livestream videos from the field, asking customers which plants they want. Traffickers are rarely caught or prosecuted. While American, British, European and Japanese collectors have traditionally driven the illegal trade, more recently, interest has also spread to China, Korea and Thailand.
Although no estimates exist for the scope of the illegal cactus trade, many experts believe it is increasing. “It was a much smaller issue 20 years ago, but now, it is major,” said Jeff Pavlat, president of the Cactus and Succulent Society of America. “Entire populations are being stripped.”

In February 2020, the Italian police, responding to a tip, visited the home of Andrea Piombetti, a well-known cactus collector and seller in Senigallia, a town on the Adriatic coast. In a makeshift greenhouse, officers discovered around 1,000 protected Chilean Copiapoa and Eriosyce species, ranging from the size of a baseball to a beach ball. Police officers seized the plants, along with Mr. Piombetti’s cellphone and passport.
It was not the first time Mr. Piombetti, who did not respond to interview requests, and who is now awaiting trial, had been accused of cactus trafficking. The police also seized a shipment of 600 Chilean cactuses from him in 2013. But the case was never prosecuted because of bureaucratic delays, and the statute of limitations passed.
“Many environmental crimes in Italy have this problem — they can’t be punished after four or five years,” said Lt. Col. Simone Cecchini, chief of the wildlife division of the local police department, who led the 2013 and 2020 investigations. “This time, our prosecutor said we’ll try to be very fast, because he wants to avoid what happened in 2013.”
Mr. Piombetti has not yet entered a plea in court.
Mr. Cattabriga and other experts carried out a number of analytical tests to confirm that the plants had not been homegrown, but instead were collected from the wild in Chile’s Atacama Desert. Mr. Cecchini and his colleagues found that Mr. Piombetti had made seven trips to Chile, most recently in December 2019, where they say he poached the cactuses in the Atacama Desert, near Pan de Azúcar National Park.
After collecting the cactuses, Mr. Cecchini’s investigation revealed that Mr. Piombetti allegedly mailed the plants to addresses in Greece and Romania, where international customs are more lax than in Italy. Because of their hardiness, cactuses can survive long journeys by post without soil, water or light.
Mr. Cecchini found many records of illegal cactus sales in Mr. Piombetti’s phone, including receipts from a Japanese company that seemed to place large monthly orders. Based on the prices quoted by text, the police calculated that the seized cactuses were worth over one million euros.
“We need bigger penalties in Italy for this type of environmental crime,” Mr. Cecchini said.

After the seizure, Mr. Cattabriga arranged for the plants, many of which were in very poor health, to be transferred to the Città Studi Botanical Garden of Milan for temporary care. As the investigation progressed, the question of what to do with them became more urgent.
Cactuses confiscated by the Italian authorities are normally destroyed or, if they are rare species, sent to botanical gardens. But with Operation Atacama, “it was very different,” Mr. Cattabriga said. The number of cactuses was so large, and some were critically endangered species found in areas of Chile spanning just a few square miles with very specialized needs. Keeping the cactuses at the garden was a likely death sentence.
At first, there was discussion of sending the plants to other botanical gardens in Italy and broader Europe. But Mr. Cattabriga, Mr. Cecchini and Dr. Guerrero were adamant they be returned to Chile for both conservation and symbolic purposes.
Working with Dr. Goettsch and several others, they spent much of 2020 navigating Italian, Chilean and international bureaucracy to secure permission to send the plants home. “It’s the first time this has happened, so no one was really clear on how to do this,” Dr. Guerrero said.
The authorities finally agreed to the transfer in late 2020. But neither Chile nor Italy would pay the approximately $3,600 shipping cost.
Dr. Goettsch managed to secure about three-quarters of the funds from the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and the botanical garden in Milan pitched in as well. The rest was provided by Liz Vayda, owner of B. Willow, a plant shop in Baltimore that regularly donates to environmental groups.
Finally, in late April, 844 cactuses made the return journey to Chile. Around 100 others had died, and 84 stayed in Milan for study.
Mr. Cattabriga has been making daily video calls to try to ensure the plants are being properly cared for while they are in quarantine. According to Bernardo Martínez Aguilera, head of the forest inspection department at Chile’s National Forest Corporation, the final goal “is that the majority of these individuals return to their natural environment, which they never should have left.”
Carrots and Sticks

Operation Atacama is by far the biggest bust in recent history, but there are other signs that law enforcement is beginning to take note of cactuses. Six men were sentenced to a number of penalties after recent federal convictions involving a cactus trafficking ring that poached thousands of living rocks in southwest Texas for smuggling to Europe and Asia. Additional cactus-related prosecutions have taken place in California and Arizona.
But while stronger law enforcement is welcome, a variety of experts believe prohibition, on its own, will not stop trafficking. Instead, they favor meeting demand through sustainably managed collection of seeds or cuttings of wild plants, which could be used for artificial propagation by certified greenhouses.
Sales of these legally sourced plants could help offset illegal trade. Preferably, the proceeds would go directly to communities living alongside the species, the experts say, creating incentives to protect them. The cactus and succulent trade is “big business, but the majority of that money is not centered in countries of origin,” Dr. Margulies said. “I think there should be a push to engage in this more from a social justice lens.”
Many countries’ domestic legislation prohibits these types of activities, however, as do strict international trade laws and bureaucracy. The result, Mr. Cattabriga said, is a system that “discourages the reproduction of rare plants in captivity, and has the side effect of exacerbating the illicit trade.”
Dr. Guerrero hopes that Operation Atacama will ignite discussions of how to reform legislation to make it more amenable to solutions.
In the meantime, some plant enthusiasts are going out of their way to change cactus collecting culture. Ms. Vayda at B. Willow, for example, is in conversation with the International Union for Conservation of Nature about potentially establishing houseplant industry standards for certifying that greenhouses use legally sourced plants, similar to organic or fair-trade food labels. “Right now, I have to specifically ask a grower, ‘Where do your plants from?’” she said.
The Cactus and Succulent Society of America is trying to steer members away from the temptation of poached plants through educational talks, articles it publishes and other means. The society also banned growers from entering specimens into specialty shows and competitions that members would have no way of legally acquiring today.
“You can’t have a Copiapoa collected in Chile in the 1970s get the ribbon, and then tell members, ‘No, you can’t have that plant, you have to start from seed and in 200 years you can have it,’” Mr. Pavlat said. “We have to reset what people’s goals and expectations are.”

PENCE LAYING LOW IN INDIANA.....FEARS FOR HIS LIFE
Yesterday on Morning Joe, Joe Scarborough said Mike Pence was “in fear for his life…..he was laying low in Indiana.” All because of Trump’s actions leading up to and on January 6.
Scarborough blamed Trump for putting the former Vice President “on the hit list.”
A shame from my perspective also. Pence could not have been a more loyal Vice President. From Trump’s perspective, Pence wavered at the end. From mine, he did his job in interpreting the Constitution properly.
Some came to kill Pence and Pelosi on January 6. Others decided to during Trump’s rally under the white tent before.
Trump put Pence behind the eight ball. Before and at the rally in suggesting Pence had the power to invalidate the election. Trump told everyone at the rally: Pence “did not have the courage to do it.”
Trump’s rabble rousers were ready. They had heard the words of their Master. As they proceeded to the Capitol, they chanted “hang Mike Pence.”
It has been reported 2 police officers died by suicide following what occurred at the Capitol. One a Capitol police officer. The other a member of the MDP.
The Department of Homeland Security issued a “national terrorist bulletin” yesterday. The bulletin indicated there was a “lingering potential” for “violence.” From persons motivated by anti-government sentiment following Biden’s election.
The Department suggested the January 6 riot emboldened extremists and set the stage for additional attacks.
Amazing how many Republicans have jumped ship since the election. It was reported yesterday 30,000 Republicans changed their registration to another party.
The number is probably higher. Sufficient data is not available. Only a handful of states report voter registration and information about voters switching parties on a weekly basis.
Some things in life are carried a step too far. One is the removal of statues of persons who had ties to slavery in the past and public buildings named after those considered to have had black animosity.
San Francisco joined the group supporting name removal yesterday. The San Francisco School Board had a resolution under consideration for 3 months. Forty four schools involved.
The Board approved a resolution calling for removing names that honored historical figures with direct or broad ties to slavery, oppression, racism or the “subjugation” of human beings.
Some of the names on the list included George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Father Junipero Serra, Paul Revere, Francis Scott Key, and Dianne Feinstein.
A step too far.
Yes, Washington owned slaves. Everyone did back then. It was a form of wealth. People forget how Washington made it possible for our country to be born, the cold winter he spent at Valley Forge, and his crossing the Delaware in the middle of a freezing Christmas Eve to defeat the Hussein troops.
Without Lincoln, the black race might still be where they were 150 some odd years ago. He is honored. Referred to by Americans as the Great Emancipator. On a personal level, he was shot in the back of the head and died for the good he achieved as a result of the Civil War.
Would the colonists have won the Revolutionary War had Paul Revere not galloped through the night shouting: “To arms, to arms, the British are coming.” The Revolution might never have gotten beyond Concord and Lexington.
Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner.
Dianne Feinstein is a today woman. What did she do to blacks?
San Francisco is a gay community. Overwhelmingly. Why not require San Francisco to tear down the statues of any persons who were anti-gay at any time in any fashion? Also, those public buildings that were named after anti-gay persons.
Another great inquiry in the Citizens’ Voice: “If the City gets 100 vaccine doses, what portion of that goes to second doses?”
Key West continues to receive acclimation as being a popular place to vacation.
The 2021 Travelers Choice Award for Destinations listed Key West fifth. Behind New York, Maui, Las Vegas and New Orleans.
Miami appears to have fallen behind after many years at or near the top. It is now listed #18.
DAY 3…..Greece The First Time
Posted on May 30, 2012 by Key West Lou
I cannot believe I have been in Novara only three days. It seems like a lifetime. Especially in view of my experiences.
Earthquakes still in the news big time here. Much destruction to Northern Italy.
I reported being in two earthquakes yesterday. Turns out it was three. Maybe five. Three hours after publication, I felt another one. I was sitting at the computer at that time also. I did not consider it of any consequence. After all, I had been involved in two already that day. Last night while watching television, it was reported that Novara had suffered two more quakes around eight in the evening. I never felt them.
Many dead. Significant damage. Sad. The people of Novara spoke of the earthquakes much yesterday. It was like being in Key West following a hurricane.
Speaking of hurricanes, I was thinking yesterday whether a earthquake or hurricane was worse. One is short and the other prolonged. Both cause significant loss of life and damage. They ended up equal in my mind. Better that both not occur, however.
Earthquakes are not common to this region. So I have been told. The word on the news is that whatever problem there is in the San Francisco area exists now in northern Italy. A shelf or whatever and it is moving. Italian news describes it as a mountain rising to the surface. The scientists have predicted at least 70 more earthquakes over time as a result. We shall see.
Lisa got Skype yesterday. We skyped for the first time in the morning Lisa time. The grandkids had already left for school. Corey joined in. It was exciting to see them both. I hope I get to speak with Robert and Ally soon.
Around 5, I decided to take a walk. I rambled up and down the streets of the historic centre of Novara. It was a high knowing that most buildings were a thousand years old. The first floor the best quality shops. Top floors great apartments. By the way, people live in apartments here. Homes are considered too expensive. I do not understand. Most of the apartments go for $1 million dollars plus.
My walk led me to discover the Piazzetta Delle Erbe. Piazzetta means little piazza. I am learning.
In English the Piazzetta is the Little Square of Herbs. Back when, probably a thousand years ago, growers and merchants came from all over Europe and Asia to buy and sell herbs at this market.
Close by, I made another discovery. The Broletto. I do not know what the term means. It was the place where the first market in all of Italy was established in medieval times. Everything and anything sold. It helped the Novara area at the time to gain financial independence
The best was yet to come. The Partigiani. It is at the Piazza Dei Martiri. Partigiani means partisans. The Piazza translates to the Plaza of Martyrs.
I learned the story of this special place while sitting at an outside cafe having a drink and watching the world go by. Two gentleman at the next table engaged me in conversation. They spoke English. Americans are revered here. I am being treated with kindness and respect because I am an American. It was not unusual for them to engage me in conversation. They started the conversation with…..American?
Novara was occupied by the Nazis during World War II. Some of the locals were not pleased.They became partisans. Guerrilla types working as the underground. Five were captured. They were placed against a brick wall and shot by the Nazis. In full view of the citizens of Novara.
After the war a small monument was placed near where they were killed. A tree was also planted. It still stands today. The tree. By itself against a large red brick wall. Bullet holes could be seen in the wall.
It dawned on me that the medieval thousand year old buildings I have been speaking about were in good shape. I asked were they not destroyed during World War II? Bombs, artillery and tank fire. No, I was told. There was never any fighting or bombing or what have you in and to Novara. The Nazis walked out and the Americans walked in. The people of Novara were very lucky. Other communities in the area, such as Milan, sustained significant damage.
My walk took me past many fine stores. I was particularly impressed with the shops featuring apparel for women. The most beautiful clothes I have ever seen! Absolutely magnificent! Bright, shiny and smart for summer wearing. The thought struck me it would have been nice to have a woman to take into the stores and buy a new wardrobe for.
Remember the 124 steps I spoke of yesterday. There are not 124. I counted them again yesterday. At a time when I was not suffering from jet lag and a bad stomach. There are 68. Still a lot of steps for this old man!
The effects of jet lag are still with me. I went to bed at nine last night. Did not sleep one minute. Finally got up at 5:30 in the morning to start this blog. I will pay for the no sleep later in the day.
Never got to Milan yesterday to view the Last Supper. The trains were out of commission because of the earthquake.
I cannot let this experience pass. At the dinner party three nights ago, one of the meats was a dark one. Deep purple. Sliced thin. Every one was going crazy over it. They loved it! A bit of lemon and they ate away!
I had a few pieces. Did not particularly like it. Other guests were surprised I did not.
Yesterday similar meat was served to me for lunch. I again was not crazy about it. I asked what is this? It was horse meat! Horse meat is legal in Italy. There are specialty butcher shops that sell horse meat. And lest I forget, donkey also. That was it. No more for me! I explained that horse meat was not legal in the United States for human consumption. My fellow diners were shocked.
The big deal today is for me to go to the bank. I have no euros. Only American money. The exchange process should be interesting. Is cash or a credit card required? Can both be used?
Stephanie Kaple is one of the loves of my life. She lives in Key West. She is known as the Island Shoe Girl. She only wears expensive shoes with high high heels. Looks good in them!
Stephanie now plays bocce. She joined the same bocce league I play in. She wears heels while playing. Not wise from my perspective. But that is Stephanie!
She writes a blog as I do. A recent one was interesting and funny. Take a look at it if you have the time. A short read. www.islandshoegirl.com.
That is all for today folks! Sorry for the length but there is much to share regarding my trip. Tomorrow I leave for Athens to start the Greece phase of this trip. Athens, Santorini, Mykinos and some deserted island. Five weeks will be spent in Greece. Then back to Italy for a while. Portofino and Morocco under consideration for the scheduled end of my trip. If I return. I am enjoying everything so much I might stay.
Enjoy your day!
