shuri x spidergirl!reader hcs
Tumblr media
warnings: fluff, tchalla and ramonda are alive.. for a little, major character deaths, flirty!reader
it was weird how you and shuri first met. she was on a mission in new york, encountering a villain, when suddenly a string of web came into view snatching her up before she could get pounded by the giant fist that was coming down and smashing into the pavement.
“aren’t you supposed to have some kind of danger sense? you ain’t see that big ass fist coming?”
shuri looked up and saw what was keeping her from falling 15ft from the air. you.
you looked so beautiful, mask bunched up at your forehead, showing off your gorgeous brown eyes and long curly lashes. the setting sun gleaming so perfectly off your caramel brown skin. and your curls not being able to be covered by the mask so they stayed down on your shoulders.
“no, but thank bast you caught me before it did”
you smiled.
“..nice accent.”
shuri let her helmet disintegrate, revealing a small smirk that was held on her lips.
“thank you”
and from that moment on it was nothing but bliss for the two of you.
it was awhile after you and shuri started dating and the public was starting to catch on rather quickly.
it would be during interviews after you had just caught a criminal. paparazzi were left and right of you, sticking microphones in your face trying to get you to answer questions.
“spider-girl, are you currently in a relationship with the black panther?”
“spider-girl, over here!”
“we’ve seen you and the princess of wakanda hanging out around the city, are you both dating?”
you would never give them a straight forward answer. simply shrugging your shoulders, pulling your mask over you face and leaving the scene.
you can’t say that you blame them with all the constant back and forth flirting between you two. what may have started the rumors is that you’ve started to develop a new nickname for your girlfriend. kitty.
shuri will never tell you, but she likes the nickname.
“easy kitty, wouldn’t want you to hurt that pretty face, would we?”
“aw, you care about me kitty?”
“like i’d ever let them come near you, kitty”
when you both did eventually go public, nobody was surprised but they were ecstatic! you both were trending all over social media.
Tumblr media
you smiled in amusement as you scrolled down the comment section.
user37292: “not both my wives getting tg😮‍💨”
user2904: “yea we knew y’all wasn’t slick with alla that flirting😒!”
user01607: “AHHH cuties!!!”
shuri would always send you reassuring texts if she knows you’re about to go on a mission. doesn’t matter how big it is. she always makes you put your safety as a priority, knowing your desire to save and protect surpasses your need to save yourself.
“be safe my love, please don’t get yourself into any trouble and don’t get yourself killed.”
“no promises🤭! love uuuuu💗💗”
“i love you too❤️”
“y/n i’m serious!!!”
you love to bug shuri. it’s your favorite pass time. even though she lives all the way in wakanda. you make sure you call her at least 8 times a day. yes.. 8. not that she minds. she loves talking to you.
“hi baby!!”
“hi my love”
“whatchu doin?”
“in the lab, are you alright?”
“yea.. you wanna see my challenge?”
“..what?”
shuri loves to say your the light of her life. you constantly make her smile with your crazy antics even thought some of them make her genuinely worry for you. but she learned that was just how you were.
“y/n?! what the hell happened to your face?!”
“this guy rocked my shit!”
“..are you okay?”
“yea.. i think it makes me look bad ass not gonna lie”
you and shuri give each other pet names like most couples do. hers for you are: my love, usana, sithandwa sam, and princess. and yours for her are: kitty (JOKINGLY), mami, baby, and when you had finally learned some xhosa, you started calling her wam yedwa (my one and only)
once shuri had decided you both were deep enough in your relationship for you to meet her family, she called you to tell you to pack a bag and that a talon fighter was coming to get you in the morning.
you made sure you dressed appropriately, seeming as you were going to be in front of royalty. you didn’t feel like you would make a bad impression, but that didn’t stop you from being nervous, shuri having to constantly reassure you during the flight.
“i’m royalty? it’s the same as talking to me”
“girl you don’t count”
“ah.”
they both loved you though! tchalla was the most pleased, constantly picking on shuri.
“it’s about time my baby sister found herself a person!”
“please be quiet”
during your stay, she had took you into her lab to show you some of the new inventions she was working on. most of them were for you. you loved the way she talked about her work, the way her face would light up or how she would stay on one topic for hours. god she was so cute.
shuri would always love taking you to events as her plus one, and vis versa. the way the slick black dress would compliment your curves just right and have you showing a bit of cleavage would leave her drooling.
and you loved to see her in a suit, you’ve told her that. seeing her in a suit matching with you always brought “unholy thoughts” as shuri would say. seeing her gold adornment piece underneath the blazer and with the gold grills to match! wheww.. that combo would leave you a mess.
despite you making a lot of money from your hero work. shuri still spends a whole lot on you. constantly sending shit tons of flowers to your doorstep, buying you everything that you look at for longer than 2 seconds, taking you to expensive restaurants. it did not matter. there was no limit to what she would get or do for you.
“shuri, baby, i think i’ve got enough”
“just this necklace and then we’ll leave”
you love taking shuri on nightly outings after a mission. you both could be chilling at your apartment and you’ll look down at her laying in your lap, tinkering with her kemoyo beads, and just stare.
“..what?
“you wanna to go web-slinging with me?”
you would have her hold onto you extra tight as you both were standing on top of a very high building.. a little too high for shuri. the entire time you swung all that could be heard in the air were shuri’s high-pitched screams or her fussing that you nearly hit a building but wouldn’t have time to finish once you would start swinging again. we’ll say that was the night that started shuri’s fear of heights.
i like to think it’s canon that shuri had started to have panic attacks after the death of her brother and mother so you would always help her when she was having one or if she was and you weren’t there she would call you. the soothing sound of your voice, the constant kisses on her forehead and your soft hand rubbing circles on her back helped calm her down.
“it’s okay baby, i’m right here. deep breaths”
you were a cuddle bug and shuri loved it. she loved when you ran your fingers through her curls or traced the tattoo down her shoulder while she laid her face in the crook of your neck .when she would always ask you why you liked to spoon her so much you would say:
“you already top me in bed, shit- i can’t have this?!”
shuri stays touching you 25/8. whether it’s holding your hand or having an arm around your waist. it keeps her calm when she’s around you. she feels safe. it’s gotten so bad that she’s started to follow you around like a lost puppy sometimes and she doesn’t even notice it.
you could be in the kitchen making you both lunch and she’s right behind you, both arms wrapped around your waist as she nuzzles her face in your hair.
“i think i’ve spoiled you too much..”
shuri spends so much time around you that she’s started picking up on your lingo. you find it funny but adorable when she uses it.
“then the bitch threw me into a building!”
“into a building is wild”
when she’s not fighting for her country, shuri loves to take you out on dates. there will be things that she had asked you wayyy before you two were even a thing.
“what would be your ideal date?”
“fair or arcade date!”
and she would still remember after all this time. she had asked because she knew she was going to end up with you and she wanted to you to be happy. she had never been in a relationship before you so she wanted to make this one count. to make sure you were the one.
when shuri had finally gifted you your own custom set of kemoyo beads you finally felt like you two were official. she had waited because she knew you did a lot of crime fighting and didn’t want them to break but once she modified them she knew it was time.
“I GOT MY OWN PAIR?!??!”
“yes, i wanted to make sure you were ready first.”
you love giving shuri spidey kisses.
“why do you always hang upside down to give me kisses?”
“it’s like a reward”
you love to ask shuri stupid questions in the middle of the night just to piss her off.
“baby?”
“hm”
“when did you realize you were gay?”
“since i was born. go to sleep”
shuri’s tender headed. so when it was wash day for her you’ll need to prepare yourself for her whining.
“ow! usana, stop tugging!”
“i barely even pulled..”
you love buying your merch for her to keep when your away on missions. so her room is basically filled with a bunch of spider-girl plushies, cards and action figures.
“..really?”
“can’t help it that i’m famous baby”
shuri loves to say that your powers get on her nerves when you aren’t using them for hero purposes. when your with her in her lab and she hasn’t given you that much attention you’ll use your webs to pull her backwards having her set right between your legs while you sit on the table.
“will you stop that? i have to finish!”
“can i get a kiss first?”
people know that you and shuri are dating and they’re full aware of who you are. but that doesn’t mean they won’t try anything. girls will constantly come up to her, giving her compliments and asking her questions. one was even so brave as to trace one of her hand tattoos (she snatched her hand away quickly) . she says nothing and glances at you giving her the deadliest look, daring her to say something back to them. not wanting challenge you authority she stays quiet.
it doesn’t matter when or where shuri calls you, you always answer.
“sithandwa sam, are you busy?”
*literally in the middle of fighting a monster*: of course not, what’s up mami?”
a/n: ok going to bed. bye

Do you think TChalla would have dated a Dora member 🤔
Well they were originally supposed to be a pool of possible wives for the king, so I can definitely see that.

Chapter 2
Tumblr media
Prelude || Characters || Chapter 1 || Chapter 2
{Note: Hello everyone! I am here to bring you chapter 2 of Brown Sugah Baby. Once again like; give feedback and reblog to your heart content. Thank you all for the positive feedback, it is greatly appreciated. Let me know if you’d like to be tagged!}
Squad: @maddiestundentwritergaines
Word Count: 2,072
Warnings: None...yet
As the first 2 months of their junior year flew by; Nefe and Nattie, had to prepare themselves for a frightening event: Midterms. Midterms were every college kids worst nightmare. Especially before homecoming, yet something made them bearable: Parents Day. Parents Day was a huge event at Southern University, for the students. You can spend the whole day with your parents and show em around campus, or just chill with them for a few hours. Which meant the girls would travel back home to Miami, Florida, along with M’Baku.
“Hey Nattie! You got the dessert for the cookout right? Moms wants pecan and apple.” Walking around the store, Nefe had to make sure she got everything on the list her mom gave her.
“Yep. Both pies. Do we need ice cream too?” Nattie asked while going down the dessert aisle.” She was more than just Nefe’s best friend. She was her sister.
Nattie was officially adopted into Nefe’s family when her parents died, when she was 12. They’ve been best friends ever since. A bond that couldn’t be broken, that was strong than super glue. Growing up in Miami, Hialeah go be exact, wasn’t easy by any means. Natasha’s parents were murdered in a hit and run, while she was at school. The news put her in shock and she didn’t know what to do. So by being so close to Nefe’s family, they took her in with open arms. So parents days meant everything and more to Nattie than ever.
Once the kids were of age, Julian and Regina decided to move the family to Tallahassee for a better life and job opportunities. Nattie’s parents had set aside a growing college fund for her, so Nefe’s parents matched it. There was no way, Regina was going to let her best friends’ only child not live a better life.
“I think dad got it. We just need the ribs; hot dogs and buns. Both burgers and hot dog buns.”
Grabbing what they needed, heading towards the checkout lane, they were stopped when Melanie spotted them.
“Well lookie, lookie. It’s the trash community.” The triumphant smirk on her face shone, with the help of her two side hoes by her sides; Jordana and Stacy. Of all places to go run into them at a time like this. Yeah they grew up together and went to SU. Which meant they too went home.
“I see there’s a mirror there, Melanie. You seein your reflection while talkin out the side of your mouth?” Nattie couldn’t help but chuckle at her best friends comeback.
“Very funny. Listen, when you see M’Baku tell him to come by my dorm tonight. Comprende?”
“Or is that too much for you to understand?” Jordana enunciated each word, trying to be funny.
Nattie and Nefe looked at each other and let out a gut wrenching laugh.
“Comprende? Oh you think you funny huh? I can speak about, 4 different languages, and bitch is one of em. Don’t try me.” Nefe sucked her teeth in annoyance.
Eyeing them all up and down, Nattie scoffed and spoke up.
“Why do you even torture yourself, Melanie? No guy really sees anything with you. Oh yeah, and M’Baku wants nothing to do with you either.” Both of them moved past her, to finish their shopping.
“Then why can’t he stay away? He still loves all of  this,” Gesturing towards herself before walking away, Melanie waved goodbye. “and not a peanut shaped hoe like you.”
“Then why are his parents at our house for a Parents Day barbecue? Know your place.” Nefe waved back in a mocking tone, watching her storm off.
“Of all the Walmart’s in town, you’d think she’d have the common sense.” Nattie, scoffed heading to the car.
“Common sense isn’t common for her.” Even Nefe knew herself, that she couldn’t get M’Baku to leave Melanie alone. Sure enough it bothered her more than before.
The rest of the day was filled with laughs, love, music and food. Bonding with family was all Nefe and Nattie needed. M’Baku enjoyed the stories he heard of Nefe when she was little. His parents were there as well to embark on the festivities. The stories they shared of him when he was little, were even cuter. Nattie shared some memories of her own, mainly what it was like to have Nefe as a sister growing up.
Omari and Zola, M’Baku’s parents, are work colleagues of Julian in the medical field. They handle business over in their home country of Wakanda, but have a few businesses in the states. They formed a bond with Julian and Regina when, Omari first came to work for the local hospital. The bond stuck for the last few years.
“Regina, darling whatever you put in this gumbo it is good. Girl, you have to give me the recipe.” Zola was enamored by the dish.
“I shall. If you give me the recipe to this chicken dish from Wakanda. I need to go visit some time.” The chuckle that left the women’s lips, put a smile on both their husbands faces.
“All the food is amazing. Thank you for inviting us over, Mrs. Johnson.” M’Baku said politely, glancing over at Nefe a bit before diving into the peach cobbler that she made.
“Oh dear, you can call me Regina. We’re all family here.”
The atmosphere was warm and inviting. Just what was needed to ease the stress levels.
“Alright. Mrs. Regina.” A smile etched on his face remained there till he turned to his best friend.
“Nefe, this cobbler is bomb.” M’Baku muses in happiness and smiles at her, causing her to feel her face heat up.
Daniel, Nefe and Nattie’s older brother, glanced over at M’Baku like the over protective brother he is. Knowing damn well, he’s twice his size but won’t back down from protecting his siblings.
What was he looking at exactly? The sun dress Nefe wore clung to her like a second skin. The elegant golden yellow two piece dress, made her milk chocolate skin glow. She looked ravishing, he couldn’t look away. He did however, think about how she’d look in Jabari furs that would accentuate her curves.
“Thanks, it’s my grandmama's recipe. All the women in the family have it.”
Nattie knew exactly what was going on between them. She saw Daniel get defensive, which prompted her to kick his knee under the table.
“Ow!” He mumbled while rubbing his knee and glared at her, earning a smirk from the braided goddess.
“Well she passed it down to the right person.” Sending a subtle wink her direction, M’Baku joined her in the kitchen to help clean up. She couldn’t help but chuckle at his advances.
“Listen, imma need these two to stop flirting around us.”
“Daniel. Come on now, they’re best friends. That are blinded by said friendship, to see that they need each other more than ever.”
Diana spoke up and caused everyone at the table, to laugh. She wasn’t lying though. The chemistry was insane between the two. Upon coming back from the kitchen, Nefe eyes everyone suspiciously.
“What’s going on? Talking about us behind our back?”
“Maybe. What’s it to ya?”
Stephanie stuck her tongue out and felt Nefe ruffle her hair.
“You two flirting aimlessly. It’s cute really, because M’Baku hasn’t brought a woman home in years.” Omari, his father, spoke highly of his only son often when he and Julian get together.
“We weren’t flirting Steph. We were just talking is all.”
Nefe shrugged then looked at M’Baku, who nodded in agreement.
“Besides. She has Sean and I am kinda with Melanie.”
The tone is his voice when he said Sean’s name, struck something in both Nattie and Nefe. Yet the rest of the family just laughed. He went on with a smile and just didn’t say anything.
The rest of the night continued on without a hitch. But that little moment stayed in the back of Nefe’s head.
“I hope he’s ok. He seemed on edge a bit.” She pondered outloud as she applied her nightly face mask. Alongside her was Nattie.
“Me too. I just wish he’d talk to us more on his relationship with Melanie. He knows he’s too good for her.”
“That’s not what i'm talking about Nat. I’m referring to how he said Sean’s name. You saw his face didn't you? It looked like he wanted to kill him.”
“Uh, well I’m sure it’s nothing.” Nattie a voice went up a few octaves. Nefe knew exactly what that meant.
“Natasha Reign James, if you don’t tell me right now-“
“Ok! Ok! He overheard Sean at football practice, talking about getting with you during the summer. So he talked to me about it, I’m sorry!”
Nefe’s blood ran cold, with the news she recieved. Her breathing was cut short a tad, but she regained herself.
“Why hasn’t he killed him yet?” She wanted to know why.
“He’s waiting for you to talk to him about it. Not my place. You have to tell him Nefe, now that you know how he feels about him.”
She didn’t want to lose her best friend over some dude that he didn’t like. She had to tell him, but then again she had a thought.
“If he won’t tell me why he’s still fucking around with Melanie, then I’m not telling him why I’m messing with Sean.”
“You two are childish. Childish grown ass adults. I knew I should’ve went with T’Challa to see his mother and Shuri.” Nattie grabbed her stuff and headed to bed along with Nefe, to ease her pain. They did have to leave in the morning anyway to go go back to campus.
Later that night, M’Baku headed home with his parents and the drive to their townhouse was anything but ordinary.
”M’Baku, my darling son. You know how we feel about that Melanie girl.” Zola his mother, ever the elegant woman, spoke gently as they sights of the city sped past them.
“She’s not good enough for you and it shows in her actions. You and Nefertiti should have a go at it. She’s poised; elegant, carries herself well. All the great qualities of a future Jabari Queen.”
His father never spoke about any of the girls he brought home like he did about Nefe. It didn’t shock him that he mentioned Nefe. They always talked about her, they loved her dearly. Even her family as well.
“I know baba. I know. It’s just I’m having fun at my age and I’d rather not think about my responsibilities as future king of the Jabari right now. I’m trying to get away from Melanie to focus on myself, but the day I heard about Sean enraged me.” If anything, Nefe felt more than a friend to him. Yet he never told her that. Probably won’t now that Sean is in the picture.
He wasn’t called Great Gorilla for nothing amounts the his frat brothers. His chest heaved up and down in anger; his nostrils flared with aggravation and a flight growl burrowed within his throat. That all stopped once his mother spoke once more.
“Is he competition to you, my child?” The  tone in Zola’s voice meant that she was in queen mode.
Upon heading inside the home, M’Baku decided to stay the night and think about what his next plan was.
“To be honest, no. He competition in the slightest.” The arrogant look on his face made his parents proud. They raised a warrior to take on his challenges.
“Then you know what you just do, my son. You haven’t told her yet right?”
“No baba, I have not. I think I’ll wait to the right moment to do so.”
“Good. This American needs to be taught about the element of surprise then.” Omari nodded and headed to bed with his wife to let their son think his plans over.
“And a surprise it shall be.” M’Baku mumbled to himself as he rested in the guest room, sighing deeply into his thoughts as he drifted to sleep.
He had a strategy to make. He is the prince of Jabari Land after all, and needed a queen upon his coronation within 2 years. Maybe his parents were right, it was time he needed to think about his future and what was best fit his coming country. He just has to get rid of some dead weight to do so.

Can you do a sam/tchalla headcanon please ???they are my OTP!!
OOHHHHHHHH I’VE NEVER HAD THIS ONE THIS SHOULD BE GOOD
Ok so basically sam is a sarcastic fucker as we all know
and he a d o r e s pissing T’challa off as much as possible
he calls T’Challa ‘kitty’ or if he really wants to get on his nerves, ‘pussy’
“Sam, I am a warrior cat, you are a bird, cats eat birds”
“So are you saying you’d eat me up?”
The Dora Milaje constantly choking on air just because what the hell sam
Sam is a touchy feely person despite what people think, he adores simple hand holds or sometimes little touches
and so he’s the only one who’s allowed even near King ‘Touch me and you’re dead’ T’challa
and he’d constantly hold his hand just behind his back so that, yes it can be seen, but its still their private little thing.
having little names for each other, for example T’challa is particularly fond of calling Sam ‘tweetie’ which eventually morphs into ‘sweetie’
everyone hearing one of the most feared kings in history just casually calling out ‘sweetie’ with the biggest shit eating grin you’ve ever seen
Sam calling T’challa ‘pet’ or ‘fluffy’ and somehow surviving the cheeky glare he receives in return
at one point they’re at a gala (avengers or whatnot, who knows?) and Sam wraps his arm around T’challa’s waist, pulls him close, gives him a kiss on his jaw and says ‘hello kitten’
and T’CHALLA PURRS
LIKE A KITTEN
JESUS
eventually, T’challa gets sick of calling Sam ‘sweetie’ and begins to address him in a word in Wakandan, which turns Sam into putty every time he hears it
so he starts to hear it around town when he’s in Wakanda, mostly people addressing others, or talking about others, and he can’t help but wander, you know, the hell does it mean?
he begs T’challa to tell him
Like full on “babe, love of my life, kitten, P L E A S E”
and T’challa would just give him a knowing smile, and leave Sam guessing
eventually he gives up with T’challa and starts with the Dora Milaje
and they have no clue what to do
because on the one hand, piss off our king???
on the other hand, upset the puppy that is the kings lover, and piss off our king anyway???
either way they try their hardest to stay silent, until sam starts listing off options that are basically along the lines of ‘bastard’ ‘asshole’ ‘cocky’
and he keeps trying to catch them out sam no these are highly trained killers
eventually one of them (Sam’ll die before he said who) cracks and tells him that what T’challa has been calling him was ‘my reason to live’
and sam starts to freak because, is the man i’m in love with suicidal? if so how do i help?
eventually they explain to him that, no, T’challa is not suicidal, but its just an expression people typically use for husbands/wives/significant others in the country, in extremely serious relationships
and so sam is just blushing profusely the entire day until he see’s T’challa and just flings himself at him
and he just kisses him in the middle of the corridor because holy shit i love this man and his dorky nicknames
and the whole palace just sort of stops and looks at the two of them kissing
some of them just keep working
but there’s like, 3 people, all of t’challa’s closest friends, who take out a device and film it
because, damn this king is whipped
send me in a headcannon!

whenever i think about tchalla in relationships it makes me sad af. seriously though. nothing much can come out of it. aside from pain & heartbreak. there are strict rules about who can be queen of wakanda and bearer of the kings children. so relationships outside of wakanda would only amount to being in constant danger (both life & death as well as politics), being kidnapped all the time for leverage against him, tchalla disappearing on months on end, putting wakanda before them, broken promises, constant disappointment that he cannot always be there, lies cause he can’t speak whatever is on his mind or what is happening, on top of that having to deal with the fact that he has his dora milaje who are ‘wives in training’ even though tchalla would never go there but they are quite attached to him & there have been cases were rouge dora milajes have tried to kill tchalla’s lovers.

THAT’S IT! I’m making a wives of M’Baku group thingy. I need some help with it though cause I need some friends😂. I know there’s like a mini group already, but whose to say there can’t be more than one? Credit is given where it is due, to the Great Queen @thiccdaddy-mbaku because she did it first for M’Baku. I know exactly what FC (face claim) I wanna use for this new account too, or just update this one as the character. There’s a group for Erik too , but I’m more focused on M’Baku😭😂I may make a character for T’Challa too. Who knows🤷🏽‍♀️ Anyone wanna join or may I join in?

Chapter 3
Tumblr media
|| Characters || Intro || Ch 1 || Ch 2 || Ch 3
A/N: Hey everybody!! So here’s the next installment of Brown Sugah Baby. The events in this story are complete imagination, and I don’t own the characters of BP. Nor do I own the Divine Nine; Southern University or the Fabulous Dancing Dolls, I only own the OCs. Thank you for reading and stay tuned for more!
Word Count: 2,506 [had to get in the details hunny]
Warnings: nothing really besides harsh banter.
Tag Squad: @maddiestundentwritergaines || @destinio1 (I need extra help so gotta tag my girls) @designerwriterchic @terrablaze514
[let me know if you’s like to be apart of the tag squad]
It was another scorching humid day at Southern University, and everyone had their hands full. Tailgating, getting the team ready for the game, the band tuning their instruments for the halftime show, the majorette team stretching and making sure the speakers were loud enough. The whole campus was on fire about the homecoming game against Alabama. One thing's for sure though, M’Baku could not focus for the life of him.
“Dude. You playin or not?” Erik nudged his teammate to get him out of the trance he was in.
“Huh? Uh y-yeah. Sorry man, I was just distracted. Let’s play.” Getting refocused on the plays for the game, he glance back at her occasionally.
What caught his eye you may ask? His best friend in her dark blue leggings and an SU tank top, practicing with the majorette team. The SU Fabulous Dancing Dolls, were one of the best in the land; and everyone knew it.
Once Nefe became captain, she made them even better. She lead the team to nationals her first year. It was like the music was in her blood, and she could throw out a stand like nobody’s business.
“If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you were checking out your so called best friend. Who I might add, was -“
“Sean, think about what your gonna say. Choose wisely before I send you to Jesus early.” M’Baku stopped him before he could even finish. These two were like bulls in a China shop.
They were constantly butting heads over Nefe and it didn’t make sense. One was only with her for the sex but she didn’t see it like that; the other was  her best friend and would do anything to protect her. Which mad shin want to go the extra mile to make sure she was safe at all costs. Yet it made Sean want to work harder to keep her.
“Or what? You gonna stomp me into the ground like a elephant?” The joking tone was paired with a sickening smirk. Sean wouldn’t let up with the Africa jokes and it made the situation worse.
“At it again with the African jokes I see.” The disapproving chuckle that left M’Baku’s lips, was a rare one because Erik was eating this up with a shit eating grin.
“What are you gonna do about then, huh? As far as I’m concerned you don’t have feelings for her, or do you? Cause either way, I’m gonna be the one she wakes up to every night till senior year.”
Now he was just taunting him. The low growl that erupted from his chest was loud enough for both men to hear.
“Man you straight up buggin. Even I know that ain’t right, and I was just like you.” Both of them looked towards where to voice came from. Erik of all people got over his old ways once he met Nakia. She put him in his place and he never left since.
“Your only chance of getting laid again, Sean, is crawling up a chickens ass and waiting.” M’Baku eyed him up and down and smirked a bit at his own roast, upon hearing the football team egging him on.
“Whatever man.” With that Sean just backed off, going back to stretching.
“Never in my years of living, would I be around to see you stand up for me. Of all people really.”
“Man, you’ve been there for my shit. I gotta be there for you. We boys, we gotta stick together.”
Erik was right. In this world all they had was each other, and for him to stand up for M’Baku like that was eye opening.
“I wonder what that was all about.” Nefe being an on looker to what just happened, taking a break from practice and all. Nattie knew exactly what it was about and Nakia pointed it out first.
“The boys were arguing over you. I’m so close to beating the hell out of Sean.”
Nefe sighed at what her friend was saying and didn’t even wanna ask as to why. She was tired of the boys fighting, yet was ecstatic for Erik breaking it up.
“Ya boy stopped em too. I don’t know how you got him to draw back is gangsta ways, but I gotta hand it to ya Kia.”
“He’s still like that, just a bit toned down. I love me some Erik though.” Nakia was smitten over Erik just the same. Them two, along with T’Challa and Nattie, were what Nefe wanted in a real relationship.
What she had with Sean, was just for fun. Did she tell Sean that? Nope. She couldn’t because she was afraid he’d hurt her again, and by hurt her that meant grabbing her. She only told Nattie and the girls, mortified about how M’Baku would feel. He’s very protective over her, along with her brothers too.
“Oh please. That fine ass man with locs can have any woman he wants. Even me, I have the body; mind and skills to prove it. I’m surprised he’s even dating you. You have less hair than he does.”
Nakia nearly lunge for her, but Okoye grabbed her before she could claw her face.
Melanie couldn’t stand anyone else’s happiness but her own. Tearing others down was her thing, and she never got tired of it.
“Listen here med school,” Nefe got tired of her whack behind and was about to give her a piece of her mind.
“Save it. If only you were on the cheer team. Because as captain I wish I could kick your as off the squad.” She got in Nefe’s face, at a comfortable distance.
“As a 2nd degree black belt, I can just kick your ass.” Nefe sucks her teeth and looked her up and down.
“I’d like to see you try-” Melanie was off till the coach called her back, and she gave them a sinister look before sassaying away.
“Count ya blessing bruja! You better be lucky she’s holding me back!” Nakia growled in rage and Melanie smirked before going back with the cheer team.
Ain’t no way in hell, was Nefertiti about to have her on the majorette team and not think about choking her.
“Alright y’all. Save the fight for the parties tomorrow. We have a game to practice for. Nakia, good job on your Spanish.” Nefe winked at her friend, who then gave her a hug.
“Nefe’s right. Come on.” Nattie rallied them all together, with the rest of the team, and got into formation.
“We doing Formation or Dose?” Nattie asked before pressing play on the laptop, that was plugged in near the stands.
The smirk laced that Nefe’s face, was a triumphant one.
“Let’s switch it up. We’re doing Dose.”
~The Game: Southern University vs Alabama A&M~
The game was close. It was 77 to 76 with SU in the lead so far. M’Baku has scored the touchdown and the field goal kick. Only 2 more quarters left to go and the crowd was hyped, with a sea of sky blue, yellow and white. Nefe gathered up the girls in a huddle one last time for a prayer. A Southern University tradition.
“Alright girls, one shoe in.” All the girls places their right foot in the circle and Nefe led the prayer. They all held each other’s waists and bowed their heads.
“Father god, I ask that you cover and protect us as you always do going into these life changing moments. We ask that you guide our senior girls to victory and cover them with your hedge of protection, dear lord. Marchbus into victory, in your name we pray..”
“Amen.”
Sending off with a proper SU chant, getting into position and putting on smiles was what the girls were used to. Down south with an HBCU halftime was a goldmine. It was like watching the history of black rhythm come alive.
“Nattie. There go ya boy.” Nefe nugged her best friend nodding in the direction of T’Challa, dressed in his drum major outfit, practicing.
Anyone who knows Nattie and T’Challa is that, she’s the dancer one of the two. Even though he tries his best, he knows he’s enjoying himself. Who else would be best as drum major?
“This fool here knows how to make people laugh. He loves what he does and that all I can hope for.”
Nefe could see the love in her best friends eyes, as she gazed at the goofy man with the feather hat. That’s what she truly wanted and needed in life; an honest and loving relationship. She kept battling with her herself on it and couldn’t decide when it was time to be upfront with Sean about it.
“I see you love. Good luck out there like always.” He cape over to give her a hug, the girls and the band all made noise with the sign of affection between the two.
“You two are cute. Ok Drumline, we gotta go. Lead us on Udaku.” Nefe smirked and gave him a fist bump, sharing a quick laugh, before watching him leave to start the whistle to let the girls go.
Their outfits were jumpsuits with sheer tights, that were a lustrous jet black; with cut out parts. The ensemble hugged every curt and left little to no imagination, as the girls sashayed from the outside of the field to the field. Hearing the crowd cheering them on as they lead the band in all their glory.
They all had their hair down and pressed out, in order off them to whip them back and forth. Except for Nefe because she refused to take her braids out, since she just got them done.
M’Baku knew where to look, as he glance at the field watching his best friend move with grace and elegance, to the music of the band. That was until his coach told him to come back and was embarrassed, causing Erik to laugh a bit.
T’Challa was doing his thing as any great drum major would, and gave the crowd a show. Any HBCU had a great leader, and Southern University had one of the best. Whomever was next in line, had to live up to his expectations.
The music changed quick as Nefe threw out the first stand, everyone in the stands was into the groove with the music as well. Everyone knew the Dolls would be immaculate as whatever song they danced to and didn’t expect less from the team.
The girls followed Nefe’s every move with a smooth nature. Throwing out high kicks; backflips, a few twerking moments and few gyrating movements. The girls felt right at home. Plus adding little bit of Latin flare of course.
Getting the crowd hype was what the Fabulous Dancing Dolls were known for. All the right counts; the formations and the stands were on point. All the way down to the strut back to the stands.
[Watch this to get a visual!!]
As the game went on, the hype never died down. The girls were allowed to stand on the sidelines with the cheerleaders, during the last 5 minutes of the game.
“The suspense is killing me man. Alabama State A&M is gonna probably kick our ass.”
“Come on Nefe. Have a little faith in our boys. They’ve never disappointed us and won’t now.”
Nattie tried her best to calm her friend down as they watched the game. This M’Baku’s first game as a running back and it was only his junior year. He had strived to be quarterback by time senior year came, and would never back down from striving to get there.
“I just hope he doesn’t miss this. This could be his big break for the head spot next year.” Nefe couldn’t hold in her excitement as much as she’d like to, and Melanie scoffed at her in annoyance.
“Oh please. Why are you so worried about M’Baku’s chances of being quarterback for? He’s got me as his good luck charm to worry for him.”
“Listen here Med School, I had a enough of your shit for one lifetime let alone in practice. I’m his best friend and I have a right to worry.” With as much fire to throw back at her, Nefe snarled and gave a once over.
“Why do you care? It’s not like-”
“Shut the hell up before I herky you in the throat.”
Nefe cut her off before she could ever start, and paid attention to the game. Getting antsy with anticipation.
“M’Baku, this is all you my dude. Score it for us, better you than Sean.” Erik encourages him as he glances his way, receiving a head nod and a smile.
“I got you.” With a gentle smirk towards him, and a wave to the Nefe but Melanie took it as one to her. He shook his head in defeat and got back in the game. As the call was heard he caught the ball from David, and ran for the end zone from the 40 yard line.
“Go M’Baku!” Nefe and her girls cheered him on along with the crowd.
Melanie had had enough and decided to speak up.
“Why are you so into his future, not like he likes you or whatever.”
“I’m into his future as much as he is into mine. That’s what friends do. Scouts are out here tonight, like they are at every game so they look out for him. I’m his friend and he is mine. Whomever he dates has to deal with it.”
Nefe didn’t even have to look at her to explain her reasoning. Hell, she didn’t need to and yet still did. Receiving a high five from Nattie, she got back into the game and was on the screaming happily when M’Baku scored the winning touchdown. Making the score 98 to 83.
The crowd's reaction was just like hers, as both majorette and cheer teams ran onto the field with the superfans. Nefe knew who’d she wanted to hug but was stopped by Sean and hugged him anyway.
“Did you see me babe? How’d I do?” He was too prideful in himself to congratulate the rest of his team.
“Uh yeah. You did great. I’ll catch you later ok? I gotta get the girls ready to uh march out.” Placing a kiss on his cheek, earning her a smile before he headed out to talk to his boys. She made a beeline for M’Baku, once they saw each other. He picked her up, spinning her around in glee.
“We did it! That was amazing.” M’Baku smiled as he held her as close as possible.
“I’m so freakin proud of you! You did so well!” Squealing in happiness, holding on tight to him as he spun her. Next thing she knew, she kissed him. It was as if time stood still, and nothing else mattered to either of them. Except for a noise from Sean and Melanie. Once they broke apart, he set her down and a sense of awkwardness filled the air.
“Oh shit..”

[Continuation of Chapter 4]
“Oh that’s cute. Real cute.” Melanie scoffed and sighed in a high pitched tone.
“The pink and green will reign supreme, and will be ready to get down, if you know what I mean?” Melanie and her girls went and the crowd loved them, as they sway their hips and act as raunchy as possible.
“Aww that’s cute. Real cute.” Nattie was next and she got a standing ovation, causing her adrenaline to rise up even more. Doing her stomp from pure memory, over having to practice it several times, having the girls follow in pursuit.
“You know we originate, we never duplicate. I am the boss, you can’t get none of this sauce.” Nattie felt in control after her call out and saw Jordana come up.
“I guess we didn’t take out the trash this morning ladies.” Giggling a bit before high fiving Melanie, and flipping her hair as well. Jordana was Melanie’s sidekick and the campus bunny. Being the campus bunny was a good thing, but she claims it is. Adjusting their pearls, she lead them.
“We tried to be nice, we ain’t gone tell you twice. You give us a mean glare, but all the boys love to stare.” The AKA’s riled up the crowd even more and Nefe knew her girls weren’t doing down without a fight. She gave a head nod to her girl Nakia.
“Oh that was cute.” She wipes a fake tear from eye, and glanced around the crowd herself. Taking in the ambiance and feeling loose. Basking in the glory of her achievement.
“Now now, ladies. You all are cute, but there can only be one true crew of the yard. Let me show you.” She started off in a slow, stomp and clap rhythm. Being egged on by her girls, was encouragement enough for her to lead the stomp into full effect.
“Because we ride, and we don’t hide. This ain’t no race, so get out my face. At least you tried, but oops we lied. You can never be me, cause we the queens of DST!” The gauntlet has been thrown and by the noise of the crowd, the Divas has won the yard battle.
“This isn’t over.” Melanie got up too close to Nefe and that was a major issue.
“You lost Med School. Admit defeat and stroll on outta here with ya girls, while you still can.” She was never one to back down from a fight, but only ever used her words and never her hands. This time she got up and personal in her face.
“Or what? You gonna put a curse on me?” Melanie nudged her head back with her manicured index finger, and Nefe saw red.
“Girl, if you don’t get up outta my face, I will slice you like government cheese!” She lunged for her so fast like cheetah in the Sahara, but watched her get pulled back by Sean. It dawned on her that maybe the rumors were true. She didn’t want to believe them, not one bit.
Instead, M’Baku pulled her back and she didn’t know what to believe anymore. What she saw was 2 years worth of heartache; 2 years of anger and frustration, 2 years of verbal assault from this boy who claims to love her and 2 years of believing she was in love all go down the drain. She watched it all go crash and burn over Melanie. He was making sure she was ok and not his actual girlfriend. Well ain’t this some shit.
“So you datin’ her now? Dios, mi padre me advirtió sobre hombres como tú.” She scoffed, getting angrier by the minuet, speaking in her native tongue as she watched Sean slightly lose the color in his face a bit.
“We speak English in this country-“ before Melanie could even finish her sentence even further, Nefe smacked her across her face so hard the echo ricocheted off the bricks of the buildings. The whole scene paused in affect; Nefe’s chest was heaving in anger.
You could visibly see the red hand print slowly form on the left side of her face. Melanie held her face and couldn’t believe what just happened.
“I fucking warned your dumbass!” She yelled in pure rage, before watching her leave. “And you!” She turned towards Sean who looked at Melanie leave with his sister, Jordana, but his attention went back to Nefe and he ultimately looked frightened.
“Nefe look-“
“Sean give it up. You’ve been cheating on her with Melanie, for months now. After I broke up with her, you slithered in like a cobra.” M’Baku finally spoke up and the group was in shock, all except their friends.
“Mind your fucking business, son. You don’t know shit.” Sean just confirmed he was cheating right then and there. Once M’Baku let Nefe go she looked the group in disgust.
“Nefe-” Sean started again, but got shut down.
“Cállate! I trusted y’all with everything, and you keep this from me!? This big of a secret, and I thought we were friends. We tell each other everything!” The look on her face was distraught. She was distraught and disappointed at the same time, with all of them.
“You all knew and didn’t say shit to me?! How could you?” The utter disgust and dismay caused her whole world to crash down around her.
It was confirmation enough that he really didn’t want her anymore. What caused him to lose interest in her? Shaking her head in defeat, she chuckled dryly. It brought Nattie to tears to see her best friend this much in pain.
“Nefertiti, you know you can’t hit girls like her. She’ll press charges.” Sean explained as he walked away  from her with Melanie, who turned around and made a face at Nefe. Causing her to run and got caught again by M’Baku.
“fuck her! You all don’t get it! You all do not understand how much I hate her.” Her screams of frustration ripped through her, like a shard of glass. All the while shaking her every foundation, as she clawed at the arms that held her, she soon enough stopped and just broke down. Crying on M’Baku’s sturdy chest.
“She gets everything, and I can not get one good thing to happen to, to me at all. Nothing good has happened to me.”
“That’s not true.” M’Baku lifted her chin up a bit to look into her eyes deeply. “You got your friends and me. You’ll be fine.”
A slight sense is relief washed over her in tranquility, causing her whole body to shiver. That’s when she knew for sure that her mom was right. Trying her very best to calm down, she couldn’t. The tears kept falling down her high cheekbones, giving her an angelic glow. Coming to a grand conclusion, she knew what she had to accomplish.
“I suppose you’re right. I just don’t feel like I’m up to par with all of this. It all just happened all at once, and I feel like I need some time to myself.” They all gave her a sympathetic nod, giving her a group hug before she left with Nattie to go home safely.
“It might be your time Baku. It just might be your time.” T’Challa patted his shoulder, earning him a smile and stuffing his hands in his pockets.
“It just might be. But for now, I have to plan to get rid of one more obstacle.” Rubbing his scruffy chin in thought, M’Baku saw Erik and T’Challa smile from the corner of his eye.
“We might be able to help with that, bro.” Erik let out a low chuckle, sighing gently as they all headed back to their respective homes.
M’Baku’s POV
As days turn to weeks; seasons change and the months are new. The fall winter weather, brought on the chilly nature that I was accustomed to back home in Jabari Land. Midterms were long gone and finals were approaching, turning everyone into panic mode.
I had a major project due in my African history class, the irony of it all, and I needed some help with it. Okoye and Nakia did their part, I just needed a dancer for the presentation. I knew just who to ask, and it wasn’t going to be an easy task.
Liking someone you’ve known for years can either go two ways; a long time of living in every stage or staying in the friend zone. With what I’m going through right now, let’s just hope it’s the first option.
Hearing swing music playing from the dance room; the tapping of dance shoes and the twirl of ebony colored locks in a frenzy. I knew she was back to her old self again. Leaning against the door frame to watch her dance was like watching a symphony orchestra perform before my very eyes.
“You coming in here to dance, or stand there like a weed in the swamp?” Nefe’s angelic voice broke my concentration, causing my face to heat up in embarrassment. Earning a smile from her was rewarding enough.
“Ah well I’m not much of a dancer, Nefe.”
“That’s too bad. Because I was just about to look for a partner for my music history project. I could ask-”
“Say no more. I’d rather you not kill anyone.”
“That’s what I thought. You got on good shoes, and I suppose I owe you a talk.” Turning on the salsa music track list and letting it play, Nefe pulled her hair up into a bun. Looking even more graceful as ever. Man I got it bad.
“Suppose? Darling you owe the whole tribe a dinner.” The deep baritone voice of mine, entranced her ears as I looked at her reflection in the mirror.
She looked dazed and in a trance that couldn’t be broken. The hold she had on my waist and my left hand, was foreign but felt right at the same time. As if we were meant touch, in a never ending battle that our souls were meant to be together.
“I can see why the ladies love you, M’Baku. You’re a sweet talker.” The way she maneuvered her body around to face me, with the twist of her hips and a spin, send chills up my spine. She was trying to kill me.
“I was raised to treat a woman with respect and not take foolishness from no one. I was mistreated by a she who shall not be named, because she took advantage of my generosity.” Moving to the beat of the music was effortless, when it came to her.
Something about dancing with Nefe felt like it was second nature. Focusing on both our feet to not collide, it was a smooth pivot and a few twists, that had her back against my chest. My hands were placed on her hips in a manor, that would be forbidden in so many ways, but yet it wasn’t in this case. The way she moved them, was sinful.
“She did take advantage of you. It hurt me to see you like that.” She admitted softly, not taking her eyes off of mine.
“Someone else took advantage of my best friend as well. But she was too blinded by “love” to see it.” The soft tone of my voice made her nervous.
“On another more important note; we need to talk about the night we almost-”
“Kissed? Yeah we do how about tonight? Say dinner at Grub Burger Bar, around 6ish?” Batting her eyelashes ever so gently, caused a smile to appear on my face.
“Sounds good to me. See you around, gorgeous.” I placed a sweet kiss on her cheek, as I always do, before heading out the room.
“Oh and uh, you’re helping with my project as well. See you tonight.” I simply added as I waved goodbye.
“You hustled me. I see you Akinjide.”
While sending a wink in her direction, I finally got a laugh out of her. The first laugh in a while, it was all worth it. Tonight was important and I couldn’t wait.
An hour and 45 minutes go by, of boredom, and I can't get Nefertiti off my mind. On my way to my art class, I see the most predictable event ever. From a comfortable distance, it looked as if Sean was trying to smooth his way back into Nefe’s good graces. Yet by the looks of it, I assume he’s done it. Hugging her while getting a feel along her hips and giving me a greedy smirk. He knew I was there. Seeing her walk away pained me once again, along with being filled with rage.
“Looks like I won again. She’s all mine.” He said while walking towards me.
“Sean, I will literally break you if you mistreat her. You can count on it.” The threat didn’t seem to phase him, as he snickers at me.
“Or what? You gonna-” I pinned him against the wall this time, thankful for no one being in the hall. The panicked look on his face was priceless, seeing as though I was at least 6 inches taller than him to begin with. Not to mention bigger.
“It’s a promise this time. Watch yourself.” I gave him a once over, before letting him go, to head towards my next class. So much for being in a good mood.
Nefe’s POV
Never in my wildest dreams would I be so close to killing someone, on sacred ground, in front of my friends. Melanie took me out of my comfort zone, and my father has always told me; ‘don’t let others break you. They don’t know what you’ve been through.’
He’s right. He, along with my mother, were always right. It took me a moment to be center and get back to myself. But tonight was about remembering the good old times from our childhood. It’s a amazing how much time could be brought back by a simple picture. Looking for the right shirt to along with my black jeans, Nattie came by with a curious expression.
“Where you goin’ miss thang? Looking all curvaceous and shit.”
“Out to dinner with a friend. You seen my aquamarine stud earrings?” Slipping on my olive green ankle boots, i took a look through my closet for a sweater
“On the dresser. Dinner with whom, is what I should be asking. Cause a little birdie told me she saw you hugging Sean earlier.” She didn’t miss a beat with the drop of her facts. Upon hearing the sigh that left my lips, she interrupted me.
“Have you not learned a thing about that boy? Cause that’s what he is; a boy. He only thinks with what’s in his pants and I’m tired of you being hurt over this fast ass hoe.”
“Listen, Natasha-” she grabbed a hold of my arms this time.
“No Nefertiti, you don’t need him! He’s not worthy of you and he’s a piece of shit. You deserve someone like M’Baku, please listen to me. To your tribe-” it was my turn to interrupt her.
“I’m not going out to dinner with Sean. I uh, I’m going to dinner with M’Baku. Just as friends”
The look on her face was priceless. Followed by a sequel of excitement and a tight loving hug.
“Oh my god! I’m so proud of you! Where are y’all going? Is he picking you up? What is he gonna wear?” Nattie was more excited than I was, and I was the one going out to dinner. I’m just nervous because this is a first for us both.
As if on cue, my phone was ringing and it was the man in question.
“Hello? Hi M’Baku, you ready for tonight? Oh, uh I’m sorry. No, no it’s ok. I understand, we can always reschedule. I get it, see you tomorrow. Bye.”
I didn't think I’d be crying over a dinner date but this one, this one hurt like getting burned with a 450 degree flat iron. Letting the tears fall down my face, messing up the foundation in the process, I felt defeated. What happened?
“Nefe. Everything ok?” Nattie asked.
“M’Baku cancelled the dinner. Saying he had to study for his presentation. Which I know is a bold face lie, something must’ve happened before had.”
“Well Sandra did say, she saw Sean and him talking before he had to go to class. This was right after seeing you two hug.” Nattie explained while hugging me. It all made sense. M’Baku wouldn’t have done this if Sean didn’t hug me.
“Fucking hell. He must think we got back together. I gotta fix this ASAP, it’s already late as is. I’ll talk to him sometime eventually, I hope.” Rubbing my temple in frustration and agony, I knew all of this had to be fixed.
Can anything in our lives go right?

‘Ndifungela ndiya kukubetha ngolunye usuku
- I swear I’m going to hit you one day
———
Junior year. Near the final stretch for Nefertiti and her crew. It’s took some time to get here but, with a village she made it through. Getting a degree has always been at the top of her list, alongside becoming a Delta. Becoming a Delta meant that you held yourself to a high standard, a higher caliber of life and was apart of the Divine Nine. This second semester in particular, moving into a better part of the sorority house was the perfect way to start off the year. A room fit for an upcoming big sister.
With some old 80’s and 90’s jams, playing in the background, while sorting the boxes all out, Nefe was just in her element. With the help of her roomie Natasha, fellow Delta herself, she couldn’t help but love the new vibe she felt from Nefe.
“Honey, Chile. I don’t know what got into you, but I’m loving this new attitude of yours. It’s new and vibrant, I wonder what’s gotten into you?”
Natasha, or Nattie, has always been Nefe’s voice of reason along with the party queen. Kind of a contradiction isn’t it? Well that’s how she is: voice of reason and party queen.
“Well what got into me was Sean. Don’t tell M’Baku cause he’ll flip his shit.” A chuckle left her full lips as she opened the box of her room decorations, along with Southern University pennants.
“You mean Mr. Wakanda? Something about him just screams seduction. Why aren’t you with him? Sean isn’t what you need Nefe.”
Nattie did always have a way with words. Maybe she was onto something. But Nefe never really thought of M’Baku that way, and he didn’t think of her that way. Did he?
“Oh so Mr. Wakanda, will have something to say huh?” The infamous thick voice broke the silence, causing the girls to scream.
“Jesus M’Baku! Don’t do that. Ndifungela ndiya kukubetha ngolunye usuku”
To say he wasn’t laughing is an understatement. Along with teaching Nefe Xhosa, which clearly stuck with her like gorilla glue on a boot.
“Your pronunciations are getting better, intyatyambo. That’s flower by the way.”
Sitting on the loveseat by the bay window, giving his ever so sweet smile. He never ceased to amaze them. Okoye and Nakia were in their rooms but knew M’Baku came to visit Nefe. They’d tease her about it occasionally.
“Gee. Thanks great gorilla. I’m sure your home country will be proud.”
The teasing tone in her voice caused him to chuckle and Nattie to shake her head and help finish decorating.
“My parents miss me yes. But they’ll be visiting on parents day in September, along with me going home with you and your family. It’s tradition.”
He shrugged as he grabbed a Velcro command strip to hang up a framed picture. A family portrait that meant the world to Nefertiti. That’s one of the things he loves about her, how family oriented she is.
“Yeah yeah. Ok you two, the jams are on and we all have class in an hour. Gotta start junior year off right, right? So sister Queen Nefertiti, turn up the jams.”
Nattie grabbed another box, as Nefe turned up the song on her Logitech Clock radio, that was currently charging her phone. Prompting M’Baku to either join in or record it.
“I got all this love, waiting just for you I just got to know, that your love is true. Can't keep running boy, in and out my life. Want to be your girl, not cause the mood is right.”
Nefe lip synced into her hair brush, swaying her hips to the beat and making her way to her closet. Pointing to Nattie, and she gladly took the next verse.
“If I let you come inside Tomorrow will you hide? Will you be there for me? When I need someone to hold Baby don't misunderstand. I do want you for my man, I just need a little time, Before I invest my love”
Moments like these were what the group was looking forward to. The late night studying groups, sleepover, Greek recruitment days, parties and most of all graduation coming soon. It was gonna be a grand year.
M’Baku was taping them the whole time and was enjoying being back at SU with his friends. He knew he had to get the group together sooner or later to catch up. But for now he’d settle for this with two of his favorite girls.
“Don't walk away boy, My love won't hurt you. Don't walk away boy, I'll be right there for you!”
The girls sung in unison as they danced around in complete bliss and comfort. The two girls fell on top of a huge bean bag chair, and started laughing The three of them finished decorating and admired their work, ready to take on the year.
The rest of the day was filled with classes, introducing new students to the class; ye old syllabus and requirements to uphold. The old mumbo jumbo. But something in music theory threw Nefertiti off her rocker.
Melanie Davis was her name, being Nefe’s rival was her game. They’ve had it out for each other since high school. Even the delta house denied her application sophomore year, because of how she presented herself. Yet the AKA’s welcomes her greatly.
Sitting next to M’Baku on his left, she batted her falsies at him and smiled.
“So M’Baku, how was your summer? You should’ve went to Jamaica with me and the girls. We would’ve loved to have you there.”
Her voice was like nails on a chalkboard to Nefe. Her left eye was twitching and Okoye caught it.
“My summer was great Mel. It was good to be home. I’m sorry I couldn’t. Maybe next spring or summer break.”
He did find Melanie attractive. Who wouldn’t? He just let her down gently and she giggled. She made Nefe’s skin crawl.
“Want me to cut her? I’ll cut her for you.” she mouthed at Nefe which cause her to chuckle and shake her head.
“So the homecoming game is coming up. I’ll be cheering for you in the stands. Plus there’s a party afterwards, wanna go with me?”
He was so uncomfortable, and was about to reply till someone stepped in.
“He has plans already, Davis. Stop trying.” Nefe finally spoke up causing everyone around them to laugh.
“Listen here little miss soul sistah. If M’Baku wants to go with another melanin goddess like me, it’s his choice to go.”
Melanie never ceased to get under Nefe’s skin because she knew it bothered her that she could get to M’Baku. After all they did date before, but she ended the relationship because of his friendship with Nefe.
“No you listen here, Mel. He’s obviously uncomfortable with you still. So why don’t you sit ya ass down and chill. Aight?”
Erik always had Nefe’s back. She was like a sister to him. He’s T’Challa cousin and M’Baku frat brother of Omega Psi Phi.
Melanie scoffed and headed out with her little crew, once class was over.
“So y’all want dinner? Popeye’s or is Nakia making jambalaya?” T’Challa, also one of M’Baku’s friends, had asked the group as they headed out the class.
“I’m feelin Popeye’s. Let’s go.”
Once they agreed to Nefe’s statement, they headed that direction. What happened in the music room played again in Nefe’s head. Part of her knew M’Baku still had feelings for Melanie and that somewhat bothered her.
Nah, not somewhat. It fully bothered her to the fullest extent. This was going to be a long year till graduation.
