But I've done this already (here, if you're curious), so instead I thought I'd shout about 5 favourite fics that bring me joy!

And then I got thinking: I can make this a Sunday thing. Share five fics I love (old favourites and new discoveries alike) with the community I love. It's nearly the end of March (!what!) and one of my challenges for 2022 was to share more recs. Which I've been woeful at so far! A calendared slot, once per week, is just the ticket for this forgetful lil wolf.

So, without further ado...

Aching With Want (E, Drarry, 2k words) by @nv-md

Draco loves Harry, and would do anything to make him happy. When the cold wakes Draco in the middle of the night, he gives Harry everything he wants...everything he's too scared to ask for.

A visceral exploration of vulnerability. Harry and Draco truly give everything that they are to each other in this fic, and it is scorching and truly cathartic. Read the tags on this one for sure, but this fic promises the most heart-wrenching variety of hot smut.

The Gladdest Thing Under the Sun (E, Neville/Charlie with background Drarry, 1.7k words) by @tackytigerfic

"Neville and Charlie had been friends for long enough that he knew exactly how Charlie fought, and how he fucked. He knew he could have taken Charlie home if he wanted to - he had seen enough of Charlie’s conquests to know that he was Charlie’s type, and he had drunk and danced and laughed with Charlie enough to feel the flare and heat of his interest."

Or: Neville wants Charlie for good, not just for the night.

How is it that Tacky manages to include so much rich history in a relatively short wordcount? I am astounded. Once again, I am bowled over by this talent. This is a gentle, careful build: like cultivating a garden, Neville takes care of his yearning and plays it cool while Charlie plays it hot. The result? Gorgeous, romantic, and blindingly sexy.

(Official Summary) Harry isn't dealing well with being bitten and turned into a werewolf. Draco isn't dealing well with Harry packing up and leaving like a thief in the night. Things come to a head in a forest cabin in the German Ore Mountains.

(Unofficial Summary) An annoying posh wanker is stuck in a forest cabin for a month with the most frustrating, taciturn prat on the planet. The prat is a werewolf who ran away from home. The wanker desperately wants to make Little Red Riding Hood jokes. They are in love.

I devoured this in just a few nights. Jesus Christ, where do I even start?! There's pining, there's desire, there's a hermit-y Harry deep in the forest in Germany, there's Draco in nailpolish! And it's all so stunningly written. The love and longing between them is so instinctive. I absolutely loved everything about this fic and I am sure it will be read time and time again.

We Never Went to Church (M, Wolfstar, Jily, and Dorlene, currently a WIP) by @wrapped-up

It’s been ten years since Regulus Black opted out. Disappeared from all of their lives entirely. Nobody has seen nor heard from him since. But when Remus Lupin accepts a new position in a firm he knows little about, he is forced to confront the ghosts of the past which will have far-reaching consequences for them all.

Everyone and their kitchen sink knows how much I love @wrapped-up's work: it's consistently clever, witty, authentic, relatable, written with tremendous care. I always feel in very good hands whenever I slip into these fics, and this current work in progress is no exception: it's funny, heartbreaking, addictive stuff, and it's a real treat watching the story unfold. I can't wait for more. Also, what the heck happened to Regulus?!

Sourdough (M, Drarry, 17.3k) by @academicdisasterfic

Draco writes romance novels and doesn't leave his apartment much. Harry bakes bread and sells it to Draco. Draco is quite weird. Harry might like that.

Sourdough is the ultimate comfort read. It's warm, gentle, romantic. It treats its gorgeous cast of characters with so much tenderness and care. Rooney's Draco is an absolute joy to read, and his Harry? His Harry? Warmth incarnate. Patience, strength, curiosity; he is the Harry of my dreams. The dialogue is so natural, so real, that I feel like I'm there with them. And the culmination of their careful getting together is just so expertly done.

Harry's sick, and Draco just wants to take care of him, but they're two idiots in love, so it couldn't possibly be that easy.

Okay, so, full disclosure, @oknowkiss and I have spent a good few hours yelling at each other about how much we love the tropes we love but I think I forgot to mention how much I fucking love a sick Harry with a caretaking Draco, and all of the whinging and banter than comes with it. This has that, plus so much more: so much love and affection and hot, hot smut. My God. This is the stuff guys!

Draco supposes he should be grateful.

The rehabilitation centres were the Minister’s idea, or that’s what the Prophet said anyway. Their stated objective is simple: to provide a safe space for low-tier Death Eaters and high-tier sympathisers to reconsider the entirety of their life choices. All guests–because no one is a prisoner here, the literature brags–are to be provided with shelter, food, clothing, and the guided support of a Mind Healer via a programme they call “ideological restructuring,” which is, of course, mandatory.

OR: Draco Malfoy considers the circle.

(yes, another @oknowkiss fic, so sue me tbh?!) Holy shit guys. The worldbuilding? Exquisite. The grey morality? Delicious. The sex? Delectable. The pacing? On point. Everything in this fic feels so authentic, like I could reach out and touch. It's creepy, it's sad, it's funny, it's everything I love.

Darling, Don't Think Twice (E, Harry/Teddy, 18k words) by @shiftylinguini

Leaving the Aurors, and then England, after his divorce with Ginny was finalised was the best thing for Harry, and for Ginny, too ― but not for the godson who worshipped the ground he walked on. Now that he’s back, all Harry wants is to set up his own place, and to spend time with Teddy as he tries to fix their fractured relationship. Teddy, however, wants something else from Harry, and there’s only so many ways Harry can tell him no. Not when he desperately wants to say yes.

This fic! This fic is freaking gorgeous! It's got so much build up and tension and a lot of dancing around each other until, when they finally do come together, it feels so authentic and earned and just frankly delicious. I'm so weak for Harry/Teddy now, and this fic was one that definitely helped ease me into this ship.

It all starts on the camping trip when James gets his dick out in the tent.

A very sweet, intimate fic with realistic depictions of hot sex? Yes please! The background Hardy in this is just - mmfff - to be honest, and I love the new dynamic Teddy finds with James. I'm a sucker for anything set on a camping trip, too. Wonderful stuff.

Harry and Draco's morning routine has remained unchanged for years. They see no reason to fix what isn't broken.

Oh my god! What a soft, beautiful slice of heaven this is. Older!Drarry and a glimpse into their future together. It feels so very them. Gorgeously written.

Harry shudders, fingertips pulsing against Draco’s thighs. Draco can feel the sharp, metal edge of Harry’s wedding band digging into his flesh, knows he’ll have a bruise there in the morning, a small imperfection that only he’d be able to see. It’s one of the only marks he’ll vanish, not wanting to think about its implications; the rest he’ll keep for himself.

Slowly, Harry relaxes, shoulders sinking, breaths changing their cadence to a new tempo. Resigned, surrendered to this dance they do.

A gorgeous depiction of miscommunication and quiet, desperate love. I read this in one sitting this morning, glued to my phone in bed, breathless with how beautifully written, paced, and painted this whole story is. My heart was squeezed tight then brought back to life.

Up The Road (T, Charlie/Tonks, 2.6k words) by @ruinsplume

The best way, Tonks thinks, would be to take the initiative herself. But it has to be a boy she can stand to ask, one who won’t laugh at her, one who might actually agree to what Tonks knows is a preposterous situation, even if she can’t say exactly why.

Okay. I've never really read a Tonks-centric fic before, but... this. This is it. I get Tonks here. I feel Tonks here, and this - this is a super queer and amazing fic you guys. I cannot begin to explain how important this story is, how much it read to my soul. This should be on everyone's to-read list, it's phenomenal.

Sunday Fic List

I missed last week's rec list because I ended up having quite a busy week and I wasn't able to get the bloody thing compiled, so we have a bit of a bumper one this week! Happy reading <3 <- Previous list here

A Melody of You & Me (E, Drarry, 64.8k words) by @academicdisasterfic

Draco Malfoy has a Christmas choir competition to win, and Harry Potter has an orphanage that needs funding. When Luna Lovegood intervenes, they agree to help each other out: Harry will join the choir if Draco chooses to sponsor his charity.

But agreeing to work together also means getting to know each other again - in new and unexpected ways.

Ft. a chaotic festive choir, scheming friends, a healthy dose of mental health issues, one very irritating ex, and boys learning how to love and be loved.

If you're after something life-affirming, then Rooney's your man. The way he writes love is just so abundantly whole and all-in, and this beautifully written Christmas fic is no exception. I loved how giving every character in this fic is, and I don't care that it's Easter. Tis the season all year round.

Harry and Draco are on a trip to Budapest to help with Kingsley's re-election, but that's the boring bit. More interesting: Harry Potter is changing his Tinder preferences to include men. Also interesting: Harry's spending more time with Draco Malfoy than he ever has, wandering around the city. And Harry doesn't hate it. The city's pretty gorgeous too.

Or: This is the author's love letter to Budapest, Hungary.

I love Budapest. It's one of my favourite cities in the world, and this fic absolutely transported me there. On top of that, this is an incredibly gentle and beautiful romance, a thoughtful and gorgeous coming together for these two as they discover the city, and each other.

Up in the air, Draco can become anyone he wants to be, or cease to be anyone at all. When he puts on his flight attendant's uniform he's just one more smiling face in the crowd, a forgettable interlude in his passengers' day. Not a petrified boy, not a criminal, not a Wizard just trying to keep it together as best he can. That is until a certain someone interrupts his flight patterns.

Draco as a flight attendant? Yes, please! Harry jumping onto his flights just to catch a glimpse of him? Double yes, please! This is such a cute, funny, and hot fic and I loved every word of it. Draco's uniform is an image I'll never get out of my mind.

Out of the many reasons why my late father would be disappointed in me, this takes the Cauldron Cake. Neville Longbottom is tramping around in my yard, and I want to fuck him. Or: Draco hires Neville to fix up the garden and grounds of Malfoy Manor. Things get complicated.

This is dark, evocative, funny, lustful, hot. Draco watches Neville work the Manor gardens and has all sorts of Feelings (wouldn't we all). Also, this features an explicitly chubby Neville, which we love.

sunday fic list

Bit late with this one. I was sick this week so not a lot of spoons to spare, but I have read some bloody marvellous fics while I was down and I truly believe they helped in the healing process.

Darklands (WIP) (E, Wolfstar, currently 52k words) by @newsom

In 1987, Remus finds the letters Sirius never sent to him, and loses what little hope he had of moving on.

This is easily one of the best Wolfstar fics I've read in a long time. I've been following it since it started posting last year and every time I get an email to tell me that a new chapter is up, I will literally drop everything and read it if I can. It's truly arresting stuff: gritty, funny, sexy, heartbreaking, authentic down to the bone. And it's formatted in the most beautiful, unique way. Incredible stuff.

A short, sweet, and sexy little fic featuring an incredibly endearing Harry and an awe-struck Draco. I'm always so impressed when authors can fit so much feeling and emotion into a one-shot with clever turns of phrases.

Modern Love (E, Drarry, 61k words) by @tackytigerfic

Harry Potter, of all people, knows that life isn’t always fair. And no one gets to be happy all of the time. But surely there’s something more—something better—than a rubbish Ministry job, and a lonely old house, and that feeling that everyone out there is doing a better job of living than Harry is. And it really doesn’t seem fair that Draco Malfoy is back in Harry’s life, all of a sudden, and even though he’s wandless, and living with Muggles, and making his mother cry with his lifestyle choices, he’s happy. So what's he doing right, that Harry isn’t? Because things don’t really change, do they? And if Harry can’t be happy, he’ll settle for a good night’s sleep, some posh antiques, and the opportunity to find out what Malfoy has been up to for all these years. And that’s what starts it all.

I've been saving this fic for a cosy day, and boy, I chose exactly the right moment to read it. It's everything I love in a fic: Draco in the Muggle world, slow burn, introspection, hurt/comfort, angst with a happy ending, all wrapped up in this gorgeous package of beautiful prose and amazing characterisation. I always feel so safe and well looked after with @tackytigerfic's fics, and this is no exception. The talent! The talent!

The Only Magic Left Between Us (E, Drarry, 24k words) by @lqtraintracks

Harry goes to the market and ends up having to save Draco Malfoy’s life with sex. He saves Draco’s life with sex and ends up with a husband. The last thing he expects in all of it is to fall in love.

I devoured this last night and this morning. Let me tell you, I was completely hooked and I'm 100% sure I won't be able to stop thinking about this fic for a long time. It's hot, it's emotional, it's funny, it's romantic. The emotions absolutely leap out of every word and every beautifully written scene. It's now in my top fics of the year and I can't wait to read it over and over again.
