People are so afraid of personal growth, looking inside themselves & admitting we all have sh** to work on. It's the people that admit it & work on themselves that are those ones that have the most satisfying & fulfilling relationships-because they're willing to put their growth & relationship ahead of their egos.

I've had to become a different woman: A Trade Unionist
Having worked in a multitude of environments from large open plan offices, to bars and cafes interspersed with warehouses and corporate buildings I never noticed that attitudes and routine behaviours created a normality that forced me to construct a personality for myself to enable me to not only "fit in" but stand out in order to be accepted.
The common denominator in these workplaces was the ever present man happy to dole out his opinions on my appearance; on my personality and on (what he perceived) to be my abilities in the bedroom as if those things defined my worth as a person.
Of course all of this was only "banter" and it was considered fine for this to happen. In fact from my very first job as a teenage waitress this openly vocal approach towards my ‘sexiness’ or my bubbly nature, often mistaken for flirting, was just the way the workplace was.
Over time I began to evaluate myself based on what comments were directed at me on a given day. And so I strove to be attractive, to be "flirty" to be someone people wanted to say nice things about, crafting a persona that wasn’t fully my own.
As I grew up and wanted to be taken more seriously, I realised a big distinction between the men in the room and myself; they were listened to, no question, the majority had a natural voice but I had to work for mine. And so, the flirt, who I would later call my ‘muse’, would emerge. I’d give them a little bit of what they expected so when they did show me some attention and when it was my turn I could surprise them with my words. I would think to myself I’m not just a bubbly blonde, I have a brain and I can use it. I would delight in the shocked faces of men who didn’t expect me to say those clever things, to have that strong and valid opinion. Reactions differed from those who thought I was great, not unattractive and a thinker too! Others lost interest quickly, getting used to that was a fact of life.
A year ago I landed a job in a trade union. This has been a bit of a culture shock for me. The men I work with aren’t interested in my appearance, or if they are they keep it to themselves. The women I work with are as valued as any man. The atmosphere at work is one of utter respect and equality. Admittedly, I floundered to begin with. I questioned my very self, am I old and ugly now? Am I unimportant? Am I useless? Should I be put out to pasture?
The result of years of being valued only for how I can make men feel, how I can make them seem more important, how I can validate them.
Now I am thriving, I am now judged on my own merit, I am an equal; I don’t have to resort to game playing and tactics to be heard. I can be me.
It is only with the clarity of hindsight that I now see the inequality and injustice of the working landscape, where these behaviours are the norm. I am not suggesting all men are to blame for putting this pressure on women, nor am I suggesting that all women should stand up and fight. I am also a big fan of being bubbly or a flirt or a muse or whatever else you feel is you, as long as it is a choice and not a decision based on getting out of a corner you have been backed into.
We need to work harder to remove this culture; I don’t want my clever, funny, enthusiastic and talented daughter being reduced to her appearance and her use to the men in her life. We can do better.
