(3.28.19) 1) cooked 1st breakfast (dumplings!) in apartment 2) very long day at work: work training in morning followed by some more orientation & class observation 3) one of my colleagues showed me “comic city/anime zone” this afternoon - it’s well hidden underground & if you’re a big anime/Japanese fanatic, this is heaven 4) returned home late yet still managed to cook 1st dinner (pork, tomato & egg - simple yet delicious) in apartment 5) update: my local best friend moved into my apartment with me this past weekend so it’ll help me with rent cost & as a local, he would be able to be my guide & help me transition well **Lesson(s) learned: 1) today I learned from one of my colleague that while she was relaxing at a park, she witnessed someone abandoning behind 3 newborn kittens. Being the animal lover that she is, she picked them up and brought them back to the office where she warmed them & fed them. She even contacted the animal shelter where she volunteers to see if assistance is available for the abandoned kittens. Enak Gak Tor Tinggal Di Kamboja?

Pertanyaan yang sering muncul setelah beberapa bulan saya tinggal dan bekerja di Kamboja. Menurut saya tinggal di manapun akan sama rasa nya, yaitu rindu keluarga, rindu sahabat dan teman-teman lain nya. Tapi itulah resiko yang harus di terima oleh perantau. Jadi kalau pertanyaan nya enak atau tidak, jawaban nya relatif, dari segi apa? Pengeluaran biaya hidup kah? Lingkungan kah? Hiburan kah? Pendapatan kah? Kalau dari pendapatan, tentu saja sebagai pekerja asing, disini akan berbeda pendapatan nya dengan di negara asal, dan di Kamboja ini saya di gaji dengan USD, which is jika di convert ke rupiah akan terasa beda nya, apalagi kalau nilai rupiah sedang buruk. Untuk pengeluaran hidup di Kamboja sebenar nya sama saja seperti di Indonesia, tergantung dari apa yang kita makan, yang pasti masih tidak seperti di negara Asia maju lain nya contoh nya di Singapore, Korea, Jepang.

Mungkin untuk hal yang kurang enak menurut saya adalah lingkungan, karna jujur saja Kamboja di bandingkan dengan negara Indonesia, jauh masih tertinggal tata kota nya, boleh di katakan 20 tahun tertinggal. Untuk saya tinggal disini sangat sulit jika menghadapi hari libur, mau tidak mau saya harus keluar dari Kamboja untuk bisa menikmati liburan, seperti ke Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand atau liburan ke Indonesia, yang inti nya harus keluar untuk menikmati liburan.

Namun begitu, tidak menjadi alasan untuk saya tidak betah tinggal di Kamboja, kunci nya adalah bagaimana kita mensiasati kebosanan yang muncul itu, seperti liburan ke negara-negara tetangga yang biaya nya cukup murah karena jarak yang dekat dengan negara tetangga nya, sekaligus menikmati pengalaman baru di negara lain atau mencari teman sesama pekerja asing untuk bertukar pikiran karna kita sama-sama pendatang, tanpa harus meninggalkan pendapatan yang lumayan disini. Kalau tujuan saya datang ke Kamboja hanya untuk liburan, mungkin akan salah pilih, tapi kalau untuk kerja, itu adalah pilihan yang tepat. Lebih baik mencari uang di tempat yang tidak banyak hiburan nya supaya bisa menyimpan uang.

(3.20.19) 1) breakfast at hotel before heading over to training with coworkers 2) trained all day and practiced role playing and prepping sample lesson plans 3) cheap and good Italian lunch 4) bought and enjoyed a hazelnut cappuccino from Costa 5) Japanese dinner with friend **Lesson(s) learned: 1) students (mainly high school) don’t get off school until very late in evening and still need to do homework until early morning 2) with so many people cramped on the metro, it is easy for the air to be cross-contaminated with coughs, sneezes and body odor. If you like, you can wear a face mask or simply sanitize your hands after holding any railings on the metro 3) during peak hours, to manage traffic & the large number of commuters, people are sectioned off and released in groups rather than allowing everyone to push their way into the trains or up/down the stairs. (5.18.19) 1) today was a very busy & tiring day that I’ve been anxious about for days 2) woke up extra early & got to the office around 6:45 in the morning to finalize any preparation for today. Almost every teacher has either 6 or 7 hrs of continuous teaching. I had 6 and let me tell you, my legs are jello right now 3) one of my coworkers was kind enough to have placed a lunch order in early for early delivery so all of us quickly ate our lunch during our 1 hr afternoon break 4) finally the what-seemed-like-a-never-ending day came to and end & I could not have left that place any faster. I was mentally and physically in pain but when I saw my gift from my center for passing probation (notebook), I was reminded why I chose to work for EF & will continue on fighting & teaching despite these challenges 5) met up with my friend & we took the metro & transferred to a completely new line which I’ve never been on over to Foshan (佛山) for a quickly visit. We had Japanese for dinner followed by a visit to its famous open square known for its preservation of old architecture and shops. We wrapped up the night with some delicious Häagen-Dazs ice creams! 6) to get back home, we had to ride the metro from one end all the way to the other end, which I’ve never done on any of Guangzhou’s metro line. All the way from the very west to the very east of Guangzhou **Lesson(s) learned: 1) a lot of young children/toddlers will have a bib-like cloth tucked into the back of their shirt on the neck & hanging out back. (5.16.19) 1) woke up and made breakfast 2) nothing much happened today other than going to work and continue to prep for the upcoming g super busy weekend 3) super hot and humid today still and it looks like it’ll stay this way or even worse for the coming months 4) I received an excellent news today: I’ve passed probation and am officially a teacher of EF at my center! I’m so happy to hear that and proud of myself for all the hard work I’ve done these past 2 months. I am forever grateful for all the people who has helped me along this journey and have provided guidance, patience & support to get time to where I am today **Lesson(s) learned: 1) one has to be careful and take good care of one’s body especially with Guangzhou’s weather changing from to to cold and vice versa. Same as going in and out of stores with strong AC when it’s super hot outside. It’ll take some time but I’ve personally felt the effects of it and it’s not fun getting sick. (5.14.19) 1) finally day off today! Got to sleep in and recover before waking up and deep cleaned the entire apartment 2) met up with a few of my orientation friends (it’s been a while since we last met up) & had brunch together. We hit a cafe (hom coffee) before brunch at Eggy & afterwards we were all totally stuffed! 3) since it’s Tuesday, that means I did my weekly grocery shopping & took advantage of all the great deals/sales & I’m all set for the week. Of course the store was jam packed with people with the same idea. Tuesdays are crazy at Aeon! 4) took a nap before meeting up with my friend who took me to Korean BBQ for dinner! It was my 1st Korean bbq experience & it was delicious! 5) we then walked around the nearby mall & took a strolled as the weather was gorgeous and comfortable 6) had my 1st HeyTea experience & it was super delicious & yummy! **Lesson(s) learned: 1) I discovered electric charging stations for cars tonight while wandering in the evening. (5.9.19) 1) it was a beautiful day today! Even though it was a bit cloudy, at least it didn’t rain a bit so I was definitely happy about that! 2) decided to cook some healthy noodles with veggies for dinner this morning before work 3) went to work as usual & we all said out goodbyes to 2 of our coworkers as they leave us to return home so it was bittersweet 4) I finally received the professional photos that my coworker took at the dog cafe. I cannot wait to return and play with those adorable doggies again soon **Lesson(s) learned: 1) i recently found out that there’s a bakery near my apartment where I can order cakes and luckily they speak Cantonese too! So I guess when there are occasions in the future that require a cake, I can easily order a cake whenever necessary. (5.7.19) 1) woke up and made breakfast 2) relaxed before doing my weekly grocery shopping at Aeon & since it was Tuesday, there were massive sales! I bought so much grocery that after I returned to my apartment, I cooked fried rice! 3) I met up with my work center’s director & fellow coworker at a dog cafe (柴圆滚滚) in the afternoon! O.M.G. - the dogs were so cute and super adorable! There were 7 of them, all brothers and sisters and they each are given a chinese name after a kitchen items (food/condiment). The food and drinks were also cutely made but quite expensive. There is an entrance fee but I’m sure it goes towards cleaning & maintaining the cafe so it’s quite worth the experience. I took many pictures & hope to return soon 4) met up with coworkers at Banditos as 2 of them are leaving EF and returning back home (1 to the states & 1 to the UK) as of this week. We ordered lots of food & drinks and overall, it was very fun! **Lesson(s) learned: 1) there are animal cafes here in Guangzhou but between cats and dogs, there are many cat cafes but luckily I got to visit a dog cafe today! (5.6.19) 1) quite a boring day today since nothing much happened 2) made breakfast before heading into work early 3) taught 3 back to back classes and then stayed after for 2 more hours deep cleaning the office 4) left the office at 23:00 (the mall was completely dark & empty - bit freaky) & luckily caught the last train at 23:08. Being the last train on a week night, it was quite empty 5) guess what? It rained again! I need the rain to go away - I rather choose heat over rain any day! **Lesson(s) learned: 1) my coworker is leaving next week and this is their last week with her students. I will shortly be taking over the class. When the students found out, some were sad while some were distraught. I guess since these kids were taught by my coworker from the very beginning, they’ve grown fond of her and will miss them very much. Their sad faces and tears show much how they care about her and she herself ended up tearing up too. (5.4.19) 1) May the 4th be with you! 2) work up extra early & went to work so I could plan for today’s classes as I didn’t finish doing so last night 3) it was so early & being a holiday still that the metro station was empty & so was the metro itself 4) I arrived so early that the mall which the center is in was not opened. Seniors were all waiting outside to go inside to have dim sum in a restaurant that is often packed with the elderly especially on weekend mornings but also weekday mornings 5) work was so so. Volunteered at a marketing event downstairs for Mother’s Day but no students showed up during my shift. I heard that later more students started to arrive. Classes were manageable & not too crazy so that was good. 6) had sushi at nearby Japanese restaurant with coworkers 7) rained by the time I left so I just went home and relaxed **Lesson(s) learned: 1) I really shouldn’t complain since it’s rainy season now in Guangzhou but I really hate the rain. Granted there is no snow but I don’t like the rain because it gets my shoes wet as well as my clothes and bags despite having an umbrella. (5.3.19) 1) slept in late since body was still in vacation mode 2) made breakfast & then went into work 3) work was a bit busy but not too crazy as most kids were absent due to the holidays so either some classes were cancelled or some were partially full 4) ordered Starbucks & for my takeaway order, they provided an origami-based tote which I found very intriguing, environmentally friendly & super smart! 5) successfully ordered delivery via mobile for the 1st time! Ordered Japanese and it was delicious! 6) left work super late (last person) around quarter to 10pm & the mall was literally empty & dark **Lesson(s) learned: 1) similar to the USA, China has a delivery app which a lot of people use and it’s called 美团外卖. Depending on where you’re ordering from, some places have a minimum spending while others don’t. Some have delivery fees while some don’t.
