7-year-old Armi Hillevi Metsäpelto was one of the first casualties of Soviet bombing of Helsinki and she became a symbol for the civilian victims of the Winter War.

Early on November 30, 1939, the USSR launched a massive attack against Finland.

The Winter War broke out 81 years ago as the Soviet Union started hostilities against Finland without declaring war. On the first day of the war, the Soviet Air Force bombed several Finnish cities and towns including Helsinki, Viipuri and Lahti. In Helsinki, 91 people were killed with another 240 injured. •••••••• 7-vuotias Armi Hillevi Metsäpelto oli yksi ensimmäisistä uhreista Helsingin pommituksessa ja hänestä tuli sodan kaikkien viattomien siviili- ja lapsiuhrien symboli.

Talvisota alkoi varhain aamulla Neuvostoliiton massiivisella hyökkäyksellä valtakuntien rajalla ja ilmapommituksilla 30.11.1939.

Tänään on kulunut 81 vuotta talvisodan syttymisestä. Neuvostoliitto aloitti sotatoimet Suomea vastaan ilman sodanjulistusta. Sodan ensimmäisenä päivänä Neuvostoliiton ilmavoimat pommitti useita Suomen kaupunkeja, muun muassa Helsinkiä, Viipuria ja Lahtea. Vakavinta tuhoa pommitukset aiheuttivat Helsingissä, jossa 91 ihmistä sai surmansa ja 240 loukkaantui. ••••••••

Throughout aviation's history, women have always set out to shatter incredible boundaries.

In WW2, Soviet women were among the first in history to be allowed into combat positions.

In the 70s, the world watched in awe as American women launched off the decks of carriers for the first time.

Women have always valiantly soared and persevered throughout history. This post is in honor of all women, not just those in aviation.

EDWARD ARDIZZONE: SHELTER SCENE - a big thank you to Nick Higbee of @pallantgallerybookshop for donating this lithograph to @pallanthousegallery where it joins a strong collection of art made during the Second World War by artists such as John Piper, Graham Sutherland and Eric Ravilious. It shows wartime Londoners sheltering from the Blitz beneath Tilbury railway arches in Stepney, 1941. Ardizzone had been made an Official War Artist in February 1940. It was suggested by the Director General of the Ministry of Information that Ardizzone might focus on air raid shelters during the Blitz. "The Tilbury" was the largest of all the air raid shelters in the Second World War, housing as many as 16,000 people. The conditions there fuelled calls for a general improvement in public shelters during the early stages of the Blitz.
