I donated to WQXR this morning because I really do be listening to the radio with no commercial breaks.
did you know if you email [email protected] and ask him to shoutout your friends or whatever he might do it. It's cool.

What’s Helping Me Right Now
Tumblr media
READING
Godshot by Chelsea Bieker - The best distraction is gripping, fictional misery! This coming-of-age novel is set in Peaches, California, a drought-stricken rural town with two major rulers: the raisin industry and a religious cult. I’m only halfway through, but I'm pretty sure our teen protagonist is somehow going to use romance books to save herself. Bonus recommendation: order a (glittery! gold!) hardcover copy from your favorite indie bookstore.
So We Can Glow by Leesa Cross-Smith - I bought this story collection literally moments before Community Bookstore closed to the public, and every day I thank my past self for being so smart. Did Leesa have a vision that the world would desperately need stories like hers? Bite-size, lyrical, delicious, with titles like “Tim Riggins Would’ve Smoked” and “Girlheart Cake with Glitter Frosting.” I read at least one story whenever I watch too much news.
Writers & Lovers by Lily King - I am recommending this perfect book to everyone. It’s hopeful, it’s funny, it’s romantic, it’s sad, and it’s set in the 1990s so it is blessedly free of the internet!
LISTENING
WQXR.org - God bless New York’s classical music radio station. Midday Mozart, Score at Four, I love it all.
Who? Weekly by Bobby Finger & Lindsey Weber - An absolutely hilarious podcast about the Whos and Thems of pop culture. I don’t know who they’re talking about at least 30% of the time, but that’s sort of the point. It’s the kind of podcast that makes you feel like you’re out to dinner with your funniest friends.
A Beautiful Mess by Elsie Larson & Emma Chapman - They’re sisters, they’re business partners, they’re influencers, they’re nerds. This podcast is fairly new but it’s already covered a range of topics: working with family, childhood magic, home renovation, wedding traditions. I find their sister banter very soothing and they always give solid advice.
Fake Doctors, Real Friends by Zach Braff & Donald Faison - It’s the TV show rewatch podcast of my dreams! The real-life JD and Turk are chatting about every episode of one of my most beloved shows, Scrubs.
This Creative Life by Sara Zarr - I’m a huge fan of Sara’s YA books, and she recently resurrected her podcast to chat with fellow creatives about how they work. It truly fulfills my Author Stalker needs.
WATCHING
Virtual Author Events - Books are still being published, and while I’m sad that authors (especially debut authors) won’t get to celebrate their work at in-person readings, indie bookstores saved the day per usual and are hosting virtual readings and Q&As. Thanks to Politics & Prose, I got to hear Lily King talk about Writers & Lovers, and I’m looking forward to upcoming virtual events hosted by Greenlight Bookstore and Books Are Magic. Yay bookstores!
Stumptown - A sexy, boozy, heartwarming detective show starring Cobie Smulders and Jake Johnson. It’s so good! Like Veronica Mars but honestly kind of better, shhh. This one’s on Hulu.
Uncorked - I love wholesome, coming-of-age movies about good people getting on track and figuring out their lives. It gives me hope, ya know? (I like to think I’m good and will someday get on track myself. Tick tock!) Should this handsome young man take over his father’s barbecue business OR should he follow his dreams of becoming a sommelier? A visually stunning movie, especially if you’re into food and wine. The best parts are the family scenes; Niecy Nash is queen of breaking hearts. This one’s on Netflix.
Unorthodox - Based on Deborah Feldman’s memoir about escaping her Hasidic community, this miniseries is GORGEOUS and thrilling. The actors are incredible. I watched this with some friends on Netflix Party and we all cried at the ending.
SUBSCRIBING
Drawing Links by Edith Zimmerman - A newsletter containing nonfiction (mostly memoir-ish) comics, plus a handful of interesting links. Whimsical and wise! I’m always ecstatic when I see a new Drawing Links has arrived.
Everything Happened by Evelyn Ebert - Another newsletter, this one a series of extremely moving, funny personal essays. I could read this woman’s writing forever and I hope she publishes a book someday.
NYT Cooking - Ugh, I went quarantine crazy and bought a subscription to this cooking app. I regret to inform you that it’s more than worth the cost. I love their recipe collections and how you can search by ingredient and save whatever to a digital recipe box. Plus now I get Sam Sifton’s newsletter and his food writing is so dreamy, oo lala. (If you can’t spend the money right now, I believe they’ve made a lot of recipes available for free thanks to the ongoing global nightmare.)

Nicola Benedetti: Monti's Czardas, Live in The Greene Space
Scottish violinist Nicola Benedetti is an international sensation at just 25 years old. Her new album, "The Silver Violin" -- celebrating film music of composers from the 1930s to today -- has been hailed as a perfect combination of serious musicianship and great entertainment. Named Best Female Artist at the 2012 Classic Brits, Benedetti gave her only New York concert of the season at The Greene Space on February 22, 2013, performing repertoire from the album including music from "Schindler's List" (John Williams), "The Gadfly" (Shostakovich), "Scent of a Woman" (Carlos Gardel) and "Eastern Promises" (Howard Shore), which was written for her. WQXR's Jeff Spurgeon hosted a night of movie music and conversation which included a special guest appearance by Academy Award-winning film composer Howard Shore. The event was broadcast live on WQXR 105.9 FM and video webcast live at WQXR.org. With Gloria Chien, piano; Cyrus Beroukhim, violin II
"Csárdás" (or "Czardas") is a composition by Italian composer Vittorio Monti.

197: The Many Benefits of Listening to Classical Music
~The Simple Sophisticate, episode #197
~Subscribe to The Simple Sophisticate: iTunes | Stitcher | iHeartRadio | YouTube
As a young girl I took piano lessons, and I will admit, it was not the greatest joy of my life. A timer would have to be set for me to sit down for even 30 minutes to practice, and even then I would get up from time to time to check and see how much more time I had to play. So, no, I was not someone who found joy in playing; however, when my mom would sit down and play and let the notes ring melodically throughout our home, I thoroughly enjoyed listening. We still have that piano, and from time to time I will get the opportunity to hear her play and watch her fingers dance across the keys. There is a tranquility that is shared when such harmonious tunes without lyrics are played. To my ear, it is quite peaceful. Perhaps that is why as well, I am drawn to jazz, as I do prefer music without lyrics when I am working, relaxing and simply going about my day. I enjoy bringing my story to the notes, rather than hearing someone else's. Perhaps that is a lack of imagination on my part, but when there are no words, the rhythm is mine to dance with and let my mind wander. Having always loved jazz since I was a teenager, I have since begun to welcome more classical music into my life and regularly beginning this past fall as I shared in this post (episode #187). Many of my students over the years have been actively involved in the symphony and orchestra, and successfully so, so I do find myself learning from them as I am by no means savvy when it comes to music.
1. Reduce stress
If you find listening to classical music relaxing, then it can reduce your stress levels. Upon listening to classical music, your body releases "pleasure-inducing dopamine and inhibits the release of stress hormones, all of which generates a pleasant mood". Now, the key is to understand what you find relaxing, make it a regular practice and observe your body and mind relax which will then enable you to think more clearly and thus make better decisions.
2. Increase your ability to think abstractly
The Mozart Effect, as it was coined in 1993, was discovered by Dr. Gordon Shaw of the University of California-Irvine to cause a temporary spike in an individual's IQ after listening to Mozart. While the findings need to be clarified: no, listening to Mozart doesn't make you smarter, but it does, Shaw states, "warms up the brain's ability to think abstractly".
3. Heighten EQ (emotional intelligence)
In 2001 Southern Methodist University shared their findings of their study revealing participants were more "expressive and effusive with their comments, [and] . . . more forthcoming as well." Perhaps when we choose to listen to classical music as we relax, our walls come down a bit more, we are more willing to be vulnerable and less quick to react.
4. Increase focus
A study done in France published in Learning and Individual Differences revealed that students who listened to a one hour lecture with classical music playing in the background scored better on the corresponding quiz than those who did not listen to music. Why? The researchers proposed that "the music put students in a heightened emotional state, making
them more receptive to information . . . It is possible that music, provoking a change in the learning
environment, influenced the students’ motivation to remain focused during the lecture, which led to
better performance on the multiple-choice quiz”.
5. Fall asleep more quickly
The University of Toronto discovered that when classical music is played when you settle into bed, participants in the study were able to fall asleep more quickly and stay asleep longer. Why? The study found that the music by Bach, Brahms, Handel, Mozart,  and Strauss offered "rhythms and tonal patterns that create a meditative mood
and slow brainwaves". The inclusion of listening to classical music in my everyday routine has become a form of simple self-care. Having a sound mind to navigate successfully through the day is an invaluable tool, but it is one that can easily deteriorate if we do not tend to it. Many readers shared their favorite classical radio station (many of which have free apps available), and I have listed them below. An unexpected benefit I am finding is listening to the hosts of each of the programs whether I am listening to KUSC.org or WRTI.org as they speak about each song, often share the history and other intriguing information. I may never pick up a flute, a violin or an obo, but I certainly am finding I appreciate even more those who do and those who have written the music creations. Classical music stations:
KUSC (southern California)
WRTI (Philadelphia - classical music and jazz)
KMFA (Austin, TX)
Radio Classique (French station)
ClassicFM (London)
I have compiled a Luxurious Classical Music playlist on Spotify (of which there are many others to find as well) that plays for one hour and 16 minutes and includes some of my favorites as well as new music I am ever so gradually being introduced to. View the playlist here.

If You Were Here
A new day, a new blog post. If you were here with me right now you would see me staring at a blank page with twenty nine words on it. I write all my blog posts in Pages, a word processing program part of the iWork suite. I have been a mac user for 10 years, but if you were here you would know that. You would see the translucent, glowing, partially eaten apple on the back of my mac book pro. It’s not one of the newer ones with a shiny screen. It has a tiny piece of plastic missing from its left corner. One day about two years ago it just broke off.
Usually when i work on my blog posts I listen to a stream of classical music from WQXR.org. WQXRis a classical station in New York.  So far I have been working in silence. Only the drip of melting snow and ice is tapping on my the cover to my window. Once in a while the pipes rustle as the water circulates through the rest of the house. Sometimes a single drop of water will dive from the bathroom faucet only to slide back down into the contours of the sink making its way back into the system again, but if you were here you would know that.
Or you might miss it. You could be distracted by the lights and screens of other computers in my music studio. You might not be able to resist the temptation to touch one of them many keyboards in the room and think, “I always wanted to take piano lessons.”
Now the music is on.
Low playing from the small speakers. The piano works of Bach.
I have a small sofa i bought from Ikea more then 6 years ago when i started my business. Its beige with lots of character. Just before Thanksgiving I updated it with a trio of new fluffy black and white patterned pillows. Make overs aren’t just for day time television. Sofa’s like them too.
There is a picture of Louis Armstrong on the wall to the right of the sofa. Satchmo is sitting in chair. He is old. his black pants ride up high to show his white socks. the shoes are shiny leather with reflections of his trumpet being  clutched between his legs. He’s thinking something.
“What A Wonderful World.”
  He probably thinking:
“If i have to sing that damn song one more time….”
On that same wall I have an 8×10 picture of my wife and I. If you we here you’d go over and look at it. Then you would ask, “Is That You Wife?” Every one does. Then you would remember the last cruise you went on, or dream of the cruise you have yet to take. You might even notice the same back drop in your cruise photo at home.
To the left of the sofa, there are two more thin black 81/2 x 11 frames stacked on top of each other. The higher one is a photocopy of the first published piece of writing I ever did. It was a two page article for a UK magazine called Computer Music. It was a short article about hip hop drum programming. I have written other articles since them but i don’t cover the walls with them. Below that is a framed movie poster from The Next Three Days with Russell Crowe. This November I had a piece of music I produced and co wrote used in the film. That is a story for another time though. If you were here though I would tell you and we would pass the time.
About an hour has passed and the page is no longer white. It’s scattered with descriptions that I hope have invited you into the place where I write. Both my blog posts and my music.
The marathon of Bach works has ended. WQXR is calling my attention to the works of Sergei Prokofiev. The twenty nine words on the page have become more then six hundred and I have barely said a thing. But for tonight…
Thats all I have to say.
