don't be alarmed. this is a preview... you're not missing the rest of the story somewhere. this might not even end up being the full chapter 2. or even chapter 2 at all...

Chapter 2

Bucky and Liana were on the couch together; Bucky typing on the laptop, and Liana looking through a makeup catalog while they had the tv on a YouTube cityscape video for background ambiance.  

Bucky had actually started studying astronomy on his own and would always type out his notes and research in the evening.  He also used an iPad mini for a notepad.  After years and multiple years of using a real notebook and pen - Liana had convinced him to use the iPad as a digital notepad with an Apple Pencil, and he had actually grown really fond of it.  He was kind of an endless note-writer, and especially now since he had been freed of HYDRA being in his head; the iPad allowed him endless space to write his over-abundance of notes and thoughts.  

He was typing out information about a star cluster that he had been reading about for most of the day earlier, and had stopped to reach for the iPad to check on a certain star he already knew about.  He thought it might be in this new cluster he had discovered today.  When Liana heard Bucky’s typing stop and sensed him moving - she looked over to check on him and saw him contentedly looking down at his iPad for information.  She smiled, to herself, at him and went back to looking through the catalog, currently at the nail polish and press-on nails.  

It was a little strange typing on a keyboard with a metal hand, Bucky had to admit, but he had managed to figure out a way to make it work well.  While he was looking at the laptop screen it started to blur slightly; he closed his eyes for a second and stopped his fingers.  When he reopened his eyes the screen was still blurring to his vision, but patches of it were still clear.  

Weird.

He actually had extremely good eyesight and hadn’t ever had anything blur in his vision like this before.  He continued his sentence he was working on, until his eyes voluntarily shut and his hands stopped moving on their own.  

What… the… 

Bucky’s eyes fluttered open and closed, and his head was tilting to the left.  He didn’t know what was happening… and didn’t seem to have control over it.  His head was lifted from looking at the laptop screen, he realized that, but he ended up seeing flashes of snow, then a wet concrete floor, a metal cage, and the notebook.  He swayed forward opening his eyes and his mind was clear, along with his vision, but he was instantly breathing harder and overheating.  

Liana had noticed again that he had stopped typing, but when she looked over he was staring straight forward with his fingers lifted above the keys, and she could tell he was breathing harder than normal.  

“Babe?”  She reached out to put her hand on Bucky’s right arm, and when she did, he felt himself releasing some of the intensity he had just built up.  

“I think the… party thing was a mistake…” Bucky stared straight for a moment and then finally turned toward Liana.  She looked in his eyes, while he was still resetting his breathing and she wasn’t sure exactly what she saw… but it scared her because she knew he didn’t know either.

The first Christmas they spend in Lancaster, it snows like crazy.

Half the roads in town are closed down, after the storm refuses to let up long enough to drive a plow through, and Dick's father starts making jokes about how they're going to need a sleigh to get home, the way it's going.

The whole of December 24th is one long cycle of shoveling and stamping boots and cups of piping hot tea, while Mrs. Winters Senior keeps to the couch with her crochet and worries about whether the power will stay on and she'll be able to do her roast tomorrow, like she planned. Annie, oblivious to everything, is deep in a book. It is not a day for making plans or going out.

When Dick comes in from yet another round with the driveway, his cheeks rosy with cold, the flakes settling like a cape on his shoulders, Joan finds herself rushing to the door to kiss him, feeling the chill of the outdoors on the sleeves of his jacket, the wayward flakes melting into her sweater. His cheeks are cold, the tip of his nose an icicle in the making, and there are even tiny snowflakes spangling his eyelashes.

"What was that for?" he asks, pulling his hat off and trying to keep himself awkwardly on the mat so he doesn't track snow everywhere.

She wants to say All the times I couldn't do it before, but she doesn't want to bring him back to Bastogne, or the Bois Jacques, or the terrible cold. Here in his parent's house the fire is cozy, and there is space for the coat to come off and the boots to dry.

"Just because," she says instead. "You looked cold."

A small smile tugs at the corner of his mouth, and he leans in again. "Do you want to do something about that later, Mrs. Winters? Since apparently we're going to be snowed in?"

And she cannot help that the smile she gives him as he says it is warm as summer.
