On Franz Kline and Etel Adnan
Both artists were considered abstract expressionists, yet their aesthetics could not be further apart from one another. While Adnan would include as many vibrant hues as she saw fit, Kline liked to work almost exclusively in black and white paint--- shades of grey be damned. Kline's work was a reflection of his turmoiled inner world, whereas Adnan's paintings were her personal interpretations of the beauty that surrounded her.
Etel Adnan:
Etel Adnan's favorite subject to paint was Mount Tamalpais, a mountain she saw from her window outside her home in California. Every single painting of this series, despite always being the same subject, was distinct from the last. The world looked different to her from one moment to the next; when the weather changed, so would the mountain, and so she painted what she saw again. She claims it taught her that everything is transient. She captures the beauty of impermanence not only in her paintings, but in her essays as well.
Franz Kline:
Kline will typically place his focal point on one side of the canvas rather than in the middle, but still not leave the other side of the page empty. Line in his work typically flows with the power of his gesture. He would most often work on massive canvasses that required him to contort his entire body for a single brush stroke. The longer the brush stroke, the slower and more vigorously he'd have to move in order to keep the same weight throughout the line. Kline really liked to play with the weight of his lines it seems. He'd sometimes mix in thinner brush strokes with his signature thick, bold, unapologetic ones. Unlike other artists, he never makes an effort to make a stroke of a brush look like anything other than just that. The edges of his lines are very raw and inconsistent. Kline uses an additive painting method, where he covers the entire canvas in white, creating space, and then goes in with the black, forming a (usually) continuous line that moves throughout the piece. It's difficult to tell when he lifts the paintbrush, as he will intentionally obscure places where one line ends and another begins.

Frenchy Lunning's "Between the Child and the Mecha”
1. According to Lunning, the mecha narrative is essentially one of male psychological growth and transformation—uniting disparate images of the self with that of the father figure and thus putting an end to adolescent struggles with identity. However, the very last paragraph of the essay claims that we all benefit from these narratives. How do the themes of physical transference, spiritual transcendence and body augmentation that are symbolic in mecha benefit and apply to anyone, no matter their race, gender or physical sex?
According to the article “Between the Child and the Mecha” by Frenchy Lunning, the Mecha (or the piloted robot in Japanese animation) is often controlled by an adolescent who’s identity is ultimately determined by the interaction between the human and the machine. The mecha is a technologically advanced machine built for combat and is typically masculine in nature reflecting a father-like image for its adolescent companion. The themes of physical change, spiritual wholeness and body augmentation are symbolized through mecha forms and can apply to everyone. The pilot of the mecha defines the narrative because the male and female bodies are “coded” differently. The pilot often being a human child represents the stages of development and securing identity throughout the storyline. The mecha exists as a reflection of the physical world and self in a visual appearance, which portrays the separation between reality and fiction because the controller of the mecha uses the machine to discover their true self within the physical body of a powerful and combat machine. This genre of anime allows the viewers to connect to the child and the mecha by preparing a narrative that attempts to dis-unify us from our own self and be able to see the perspective of the protagonist whom in most cases is trying to seek physical or spiritual change in their life. Machines are portrayed as emotionless bodies that we often have trouble finding a genuine connection to. Frenchy Lunning’s article is successful in presenting the idea of the Mecha animes and how they express the notion of real human development through interaction and efforts of a mechanical being.
