H&WS18 Slumber party psychosis please.

Roadkill on Route 22 over on AO3 is going to feature in this chapter. Since I'm taking forever to write I'll include a snippet of conversation that Wednesday and Tyler have in the pillow fort. It's not fully written out but the bare bones are as follows:

“What did you do with the skin?”

“I left it. Why?”

“I was thinking… I might get arts and crafts time if I end up in WillowHill. I could've made you a pair of gloves or something if they'd allow leather working. Or Thing could probably use some fingertip boots so he stops complaining about ruining his manicures running around outside.”

Wednesday- shocked but intrigued- “Have you always been like this?”

“Been like what?”

“Open to morbid thoughts. You seemed so normyish (different word) before.”

“Yeah. I guess. I mean, I never really said any of it out loud since I knew what people would think but it's not like I haven't had thoughts about skinning someone alive to turn them into something actually useful before.”

“Do you think the morbidity is a hyde thing?”

“Naw. It's more of a customer service thing. Ask anyone who's worked in retail and they'll probably say the same thing.”

when i was rereading/skimming ws18 for bucky’s house, i caught the title of the book he had on his desk, one that it looked like he’d been reading most recently. it’s the art of peace, which i just thought was a general sorta, y’know, self-help or meditation book, but–

The real way of the warrior is based on compassion, wisdom, fearlessness, and love of nature. So taught the great Morihei Ueshiba (1883–1969), founder of the Japanese martial art of Aikido. Aikido is a disciple Ueshiba called the “Art of Peace.” It offers a nonviolent way to victory in the face of conflict, and he believed that Aikido principles could be applied to all the challenges we face in life—in personal and business relationships, as well as in our interactions with society. These succinct and pithy teachings are drawn from his talks and writings. The collection is compiled by the renowned modern Aikidoist John Stevens, a disciple of Ueshiba.

Morihei Ueshiba (1883–1969) was the founder of Aikido. At age eighteen, Ueshiba joined the Japanese military, during which time he also developed his skills in the martial arts. He eventually left the military, deeply discouraged by the death and destruction that results from combat. Ueshiba continued to experiment with a variety of martial arts, finding particular joy in the spiritual aspects of martial arts. He came to believe that a real warrior was one who was rooted in love, and it was in this spirit that he began to develop Aikido, a martial art that emphasizes harmony and the peaceful resolution of conflict.

boy, does that sound familiar.

but also–it really does explain a lot. bc one of the things i’ve noticed is, while bucky’s always ready to jump into the fray and throw some punches–he doesn’t seem as gung-ho on starting the fight. he has very noticeably shifted from a shoot-first attitude into a talk-first attitude, if it’s applicable. if you look at how he approached things in ws18–talking to the loan sharks and resolving it peacefully, trying to talk to rj’s dad–and then how he approached clint and ronin in hawkeye: freefall–calm, tries to connect, benefit of the doubt–he’s really, really trying to embrace a different kind of attitude and lifestyle. and i’d even say, in strikeforce, though that’s more mission oriented and plays more to bucky’s fighting side, still fits, i think, he’s taking more in the way of precautionary measures, and isn’t really the one to start the fight (though he will finish it).

so… yeah. i love this version of bucky that’s longing for peace and understanding.
