for your ask game, urban fantasy au?

this has sent me down a mental rabbit hole of just what is urban fantasy and how does it differ from paranormal romance. i don’t feel like i have a good grasp on that, other than maybe urban fantasy is less romance focused with higher stakes? (like—maybe true blood as opposed to twilight??? idk!), but on the other hand sid and geno are in love and that’s why we’re here.

so anyway long story short, if this is not what you meant let me know!!

as WTAE’s resident meteorologist, sid’s seen his share of weird weather—he’s gleefully trotted out the age old “if you don’t like the weather, just give it a few minutes” line more than he should probably admit—but he’s never seen it as unpredictable as this. bright, searing sunshine without a cloud in the sky to a hail storm in under thirty minutes in JUNE, or a short-lived but violent tornado that ripped through a thankfully empty copse of trees one afternoon in February. luckily while the weather has been weird, it hasn’t been actually harmful, except to sid’s credibility. his predictions are wrong 75% of the time, but it’s not like he can defend himself publicly at all—he’s not looking to cause mass panic by telling the whole of Allegheny County that neither he nor his colleagues can come up with any natural explanation for these weather patterns.

but at least that new coffee shop that’s been under construction for what feels like forever is finally open. sid has what some people would call a massive sweet tooth and what he sees as good work/life balance—he works hard to keep his body camera-ready, and he deserves to balance that with a pastry and a coffee with some caramel drizzle every afternoon.

geno, the man who runs the coffee shop, is maybe the most gorgeous man sid has ever seen. he also speaks maybe 10 words of english outside of what’s on his chalkboard menu, and seems very shy. or maybe just reserved. but he recognized sid from tv and was so excited about it, like sid was a celebrity instead of just a guy who makes dorky weather puns on the news every morning, and now he lights up every time sid comes in.

sid and geno get closer, and as the weather becomes less and less erratic, sid starts noticing a pattern. on the days he spends time with geno, the weather behaves as expected. on the days he doesn’t, more often than not there’s some kind of anomaly. his theory is finally cemented the day they have an argument, and a massive thunderstorm rips through downtown. but only downtown. he doesn’t know how to talk to geno about it though. it sounds crazy.

simultaneously, a russian atmospheric scientist arrives in pittsburgh and asks to consult with sid, claiming to have been sent from the international association to study the weather activity in the area. but it’s clear from the first conversation that this guy is not a scientist, and he’s not particularly interested in the weather itself. he’s looking for what—or who, more likely—is causing it. uh oh.

A man armed with a shotgun was prevented entry into a predominantly Black Pennsylvania church, possibly thwarting a racially motivated mass shooting.

Police officers received a criminal complaint at 9 a.m. that morning about the incident between the two women and Harris and went to investigate.

The officers, in an interview with church Bishop Kenneth Crumb, were told that Harris was denied entry to the church because the service was too packed. Crumb told the officers that had he just come an hour later, he would’ve been allowed entry and was grateful this did not happen.

“When you just think about how close we came to having the same kind of horrific situation that we had at the synagogue in Pittsburgh, it’s like the Grace of God. Thank God for his grace, for his covering over us, because this could have been a total different way,” Crumb told WTAE-TV.

“There is a whole lot of mass murders going on, there is shootings, particularly in the African-American community, people targeting our communities,” Crumb said. 

Harris would eventually be confronted by Ambridge police and would point his gun at the officer on the scene. The officer called for backup and, with some assistance, managed to arrest Harris, who now faces several charges, such as aggravated assault and terrorist threats. 

Crystal meth was discovered on Harris’ body after the arrest.

Police later searched Harris’ home and discovered that his porch was covered in slippery lubricant.

Officers even found a weapons case with a drilled hole “creating a tactical position from which the occupant would fire at the front door from a protected position,” according to the report.

A bomb squad was called to Harris’ home to deactivate a device suspected to be an explosive. Later, officers found even more crystal meth, a cache of weapons and a handwritten note detailing plans for a mass shooting.

Harris’ failed attempt was less than 24 hours after a white man in tactical gear killed three Black people inside and outside a Dollar General store in Jacksonville, Florida, before turning one of his guns on himself.

In Harris’ case, the bond was set at $975,000. A preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 5.

Conway: ‘I Reached a Point Where I Wanted a Normal Life’

She loved Sally Wiggin. LOVED! And what Pittsburgher didn’t love Sally Wiggin. The new anchor, who retired in 2018 after 38 years with WTAE, set a journalistic standard that Laurie Conway wished to follow. “I really did love Sally Weigand. She was the greatest when I was growing up. Everyone girl I knew who wanted to be on TV wanted to do the news like Sally Weigand,” confessed Laurie Conway. “She did it the right way.” A 2005 graduate of Chartiers Valley High School in Bridgeville, Conway was graduated from Bethany College’s impressive Communications program in 2009. In 2010, Laurie Conway was hired by WTRF TV-7. “TV was my dream,” Conway reported. “My dream since middle school was being on TV. It’s all I wanted to do. I wanted to be a journalist. I loved the news, the Weather Channel. I loved the news and I loved consuming the news. Everything I did, from middle school to high school to college, everything I did was to get that dream job a the TV station. Conway was hired by WTRF TV-7 as the overnight producer in 2010. “I was fortunate to get hired by WTRF as an overnight producer, and that was the slowest position on the totem pole,” she recalled. “But then I worked my way up over eight-and-a-half years and it was great. My last four-and-a-half years I was the evening anchor were terrific. That’s when Wheeling became my home.” And that’s when Conway’s priorities changed. “I reached the point in my broadcast career where I was going to have to move to continue, so I made the decision to stay right here,” Conway explained. “Plus, I reached a point where I wanted a normal life with a normal schedule with normal hours because in TV, you’re pretty much on call most of the time. “For a lot of years, I worked some pretty funky hours, and I wanted normal. That outweighed everything at that point,” she said. “So, here I am. I do miss TV, and I will always miss it. But I doubt I’d ever go back to it.” Now that she's made Wheeling his full-time home, Conway has become even more involved with her community. The Chamber Chapter Kurt Zende took the reins of the Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce as the organization’s new president following the Main Street Bank Fantasy in Lights Parade in November 2021 after Erikka Storch resigned from the position to become the executive director of Project BEST. Zende then hired an assistant in Mike Howard and Conway as his director of marketing and communications, and since the Wheeling Chamber has hosted a plethora of events with the intention to gather and grow. “Networking is an obvious reason to become a member of the Chamber of Commerce, and those opportunities are there all of the time, but it’s really true that you get out of a membership what you put into it,” Conway said. “We have members that pay their annual dues but they don’t interact very often, but we also have people who are on the other side of that because they are very active on a weekly basis. “We have a group we call our ‘Chamber Champions’ because they are a group pf young professionals who want to get the word out about their business and all of the business in their (respective) area,” she said. “And, if we have a member who feels they are getting what they want out of their membership, they should give us a call to talk about it what it is they are looking for from their membership. Like I always say, it’s all about growth.” One event that’s proven popular is the organization’s ‘After Hour’ outings that are hosted by a member business once per month, and as more time passes since pandemic precautions were lifted, the crowd has grown larger. Conway is engaged to Joshua May of Wheeling, and the couple hopes to tie the knot within the year. “Our After Hours events are popular and we’ve had some great ones lately that have been held in really neat places,” Conway said. “Since all of the Covid restrictions were removed, it’s been a gradual process with people coming out a little more over time, and it still a bit difficult to get some people out to our event. It’s understandable after what we went through, but we’ve not experience problems. “We have several of those After Hour evenings coming up and I’m looking forward to those because I feel, over time, people will see that it’s safe to mingle once again,” she said. “We also have several events coming up where we’ll partner with our Chamber friends from Marshall and Belmont counties because we have to have that regional mindset, that’s for sure.” As a reporter, she asked the questions. These days, though, Conway often finds herself on the opposite side of the stereotypical Q&A paradigm. “I do love my work with the chamber and that’s because I feel as if I am learning something new every single day,” she admitted. “I’ve always hated when I’ve felt like I’ve hit a brick wall with the jobs I’ve had. In the past, I’ve felt like there was nothing more to learn, and that’s when I’ve lost that zest. “Plus, this is not a position I ever saw myself being in when I entered the workforce, so that’s allowed for me to grow in so many different ways. Every day, I learn so much, and I really do love that,” Conway explained. “It’s been a blessing during my first year and I really can’t wait to keep moving forward because we have so many terrific events on our schedule for this spring and summer.” Conway joined Kurt Zende (president) and Mike Howard (vice president) just over a year ago. I INTERVIEWED THE PVGP EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR DAN DELBIANCO, CAR OWNER STEVE MAGER, AND RACE CAR DRIVER AND PVGP MEDIA VOLUNTEER MANFRED WOODALL.  THIS IS THE 40TH YEAR FOR THE PVGP AND THEY HAVE RAISED OVER 6 MILLION DOLLARS IN DONATIONS. THE CHARITIES ARE MERAKEY ALLEGHENY VALLEY SCHOOL IN WESTERN PA, AND AUTISM PITTSBURGH. THE MISSION TAKENED FROM THEIR WEBSITE PVGP.OR IS Our mission, established in 1983 was, “To stage a world-class vintage automotive race that raises funds for individuals with autism and intellectual/developmental disabilities.” 40 years later we are still on track. Though our first race was in 1983, our organization actually started the year prior. Art McGovern and Mary Beth Gmitter envisioned the city streets winding through Schenley Park as a perfect venue for vintage auto racing. Told that City of Pittsburgh approval hinged on the assurance that any money raised would go to charity, they first approached Myron Cope of WTAE-TV Sports fame – also an autism awareness advocate. Meetings with the city’s parks people followed and then-Mayor Richard Caliguiri gave his enthusiastic approval. The Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix Association was created, consisting of volunteers, and net proceeds would be donated to charity. In April 1983, during a meeting in vintage racer Alan Patterson’s Shadyside garage, the planning began for the first Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, scheduled for Labor An incredible amount of work ensued thanks to the volunteers from the Sports Car Club of America and the Vintage Sports Car Club of America. Some 75 entrants raced on what would become known as one of the most challenging vintage courses in the country.
