Deftones + Far. Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton, UK, 1997. Incredible. Visceral. This was, I believe, Deftones first EVER UK show. It was three weeks before the release of their second album, Around the Fur, so they treated us to several new songs. Far were excellent - this was the first of three times I saw them. My friends and I were converted and followed Jonah Matranga's career with One Line Drawing and then solo (at 2000 Trees a few years ago). What I remember most vividly is what this Kerrang! article describes: Chino diving off speaker stacks seemingly endlessly, losing items of clothing each time. At some point, in disbelief, I managed to get this ticket stub signed. #onthisday #gigdiaries #ticketstub #wulfrunhall #wolverhampton #deftones #far #chinomoreno #kerrang (at Wulfrun Hall) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjYeu7hr6sG/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#KurtCobain #KristNovoselic #DaveGrohl #Nirvana #Nevermind #NevermindTour #NirvanaLive https://www.instagram.com/p/Bp1cyaygM0G/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1a1gvgzl6grnv

Pitchshifter + Taproot + The Kennedy Soundtrack. Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton, UK, 2002. Another good time at the Wulfrun. This one was captured in my diary/blog at the time, 20 years ago: "Saw Pitchshifter and Taproot last night. Threw Aneska CDs at them. JS Clayden said "Thanks for that"; the Taproot guitarist took it from a guy who I got to crowd surf with the CD and threw it to the roadies, and the singer from Kennedy Soundtrack took it and sort of said, "Well, look at this," or something, apparently. Good gig though :)" #onthisday #wulfrunhall #wolverhampton #gigdiaries #ticketstub #pitchshifter #taproot #thekennedysoundtrack (at Wulfrun Hall) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjDQ4ZZj7pz/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Coal Chamber + Human Waste Project. Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton, UK, 1997. Mm, loco! Coal Chamber were the very definition of nu metal to me, and teenage me loved it. It wasn't complex, but they just did this simple, fun music. This was the second time in six weeks I'd seen Human Waste Project but no complaints about that! #gigdiary #ticketstub #boughtthetshirt #coalchamber #humanwasteproject #wulfrunhall #onthisday #1997 (at The Halls Wolverhampton) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmScAcXoJK-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

One Minute Silence + Will Haven + Sugar Coma. Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton, UK, 2001. On this day 21 years ago, I got punched in the balls and One Minute Silence rocked my world again. I wrote a review (second picture): The bastards. They’re incapable of disappointing. After being only mildly impressed by Sugar Coma’s brand of metal, and missing most of Will Haven’s set because of the old “some-twat-in-the-pit’s-fist-in-my-groin” syndrome, I was half expecting to have a dull night. One Minute Silence spoilt that before they even came on stage, with their intro tape that built the anticipation spectacularly. Their furious opening of 1845, followed in quick succession by a snappy rendition of their classic pit catalyst South Central, marked the beginning of the rest of the night. The set from then was a fairly equal mix of songs from the band’s two albums and material which the band plan to start recording for their third album in January–material which is, by the way, fantastically promising. Brian “Yap” Barry (vocals) did a lot less ranting than he usually does–in my experience–with only one explanatory speech before the new Representing the Poor Man. This song, among the longest they play live, is not only an effective mix of calming guitar noise (the watery sound of which helped give it the working title The Shark Song) and intense build up to a rolling chorus, it is a clear cumulation of the band’s admirable political message. The lyrics, as they so often do, betray Yap’s self-imposed political consciousness, which the whole band share. Once again, One Minute Silence have given me the feeling that I’m part of the show. In this, they never fail. In particular, Eddie Stratton’s rolls in Roof Of The World helped me connect with the music; this band’s live show has a way of making you feel their music. #onthisday #oneminutesilence #willhaven #sugarcoma #wulfrunhall #gigdiaries #ticketstub #throwback (at Wulfrun Hall) https://www.instagram.com/p/Clk5SyPIjn3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Tura Santana + Bullyrag + Human Waste Project. Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton, UK, 1997. Three bands who never made it to Spotify. HWP in particular I remember fondly, though I can only listen to them now by wading through YouTube ads. It seems that I saw them on the only three UK tours they did, including their final gig before splitting. #onthisday #turasatana #bullyrag #humanwasteproject #ticketstub #gigdiary #gigdiaries #wulfrunhall #wolverhampton (at Wulfrun Hall) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ckk1gw9Iqln/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Thursday + Further Seems Forever + Coheed and Cambria. Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton, UK, 2003. On a Monday 19 years ago I saw Thursday. And that was bloody lovely - the War All the Time tour. But in researching the gig, apparently this was the first time I saw Coheed and Cambria, a band I subsequently fell in love with, AND I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW. It was a few years later that I started listening to them. Damn! #onthisday #gigdiary #thursday #warallthetime #coheedandcambria #furtherseemsforever #wulfrunhall #wolverhampton #ticketstub (at Wulfrun Hall) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjYsIMGrIuz/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Pitchshifter + Workhorse Movement + Sona Fariq. Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton, 2000. This was the first of the three times I have seen Pitchshifter. Their music is visionary: politically conscious, heavy, and genre-busting with sampling contributing to their industrial sound (on one of their albums they included MP3 files of samples with a free licence to use). Even their British voices were refreshing for me among the nu metal milieu of the turn of the century. Have a listen and you can hear how energetic these gigs were! @pitchshifter.uk Second and third photos are setlists from @setlist.fm #onthisday #wulfrunhall #wolverhampton #pitchshifter #workhorsemovement #sonafariq #industrial (at Wulfrun Hall) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci9ZoUHDzNQ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Spineshank, Dry Kill Logic, Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton, UK, 2001. I'd seen Spineshank twice already (in 1999), but this was their first headliner for me. They were touring off the Roadrunner release of Height of Callousness (2000), industrial nu metal which I'd listened to heavily, and their "New Disease" single from it. Dry Kill Logic supported. The next night they were supported by SikTh in London (Astoria), so it's possible SikTh were at the Wulfrun too... I don't remember who opened! #onthisday #gigdiaries #wulfrunhall #wolverhampton #spineshank #drykilllogic #roadrunnerrecords (at Wulfrun Hall) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiJ8vmGDOVc/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
