Dorothy's Top 5 Games of 2023
2023 was a remarkable year for gaming. The number of major, high-quality releases was truly astonishing, both in the AAA and indie scenes.
2023 was also the year I started leaning more into gaming as a hobby, beginning to do Twitch streams in April. Because of this, I thought I'd go through a few of the best games I played this year, and talk a bit about what made them so enjoyable. Consider this my "games of the year" list, like I know so many people are going to be doing this year.
My list is reflective of my own preferences and tastes; I tend to play a lot of RPGs, action-adventure games, and platformers, so you won't find a lot of fighting games or shooters in contention here. Feel free to comment or reblog with your own list - you don't have to write little essays about everything like I did, but it'd be fun if you did!
Honorable Mentions:
Pentiment (Obsidian Entertainment): Released in November 2022, but didn't play until this year. One of the most gripping and original RPGs I've ever played.
Persona 5 Royal (P-Studio): Released in October 2022 for Xbox, but I've been streaming it and having a lot of fun with @lakemojave and others.
Katamari Damacy Reroll (Namco): Released in 2018 for Switch, but played it for the first time this year and had a blast.
And now, the list proper.
Fifth Place: Hi-Fi Rush (Tango Gameworks)
Tumblr media
There was a sort of game prevalent in the sixth generation of consoles which doesn't exist much anymore outside of the indie space. These were bold, bright, games which were unapologetically "video gamey," and wore their medium on their sleeve. Playing Hi-Fi Rush, I felt as if I was Anton Ego eating the titular dish in Ratatouille, and being transported back to that forgotten era of gaming. Hi-Fi Rush is stylish, hilarious, and deliriously fun, mixing the rhythm and action genres to create an experience unlike anything else currently on offer in gaming.
With addicting timing-based combat, a killer soundtrack featuring a suite of certified bangers (such as a cover of "Free Radicals" by the Flaming Lips, one of my favorite bands), and a delightful cast of colorful characters, Hi-Fi Rush carries the off-beat spirit of games like Jet Set Radio and Viewtiful Joe in its DNA, and had it been made 20 years ago, I do not doubt that it would have an animated adaptation airing on Kids WB.
By evoking the spirit of a bygone era while remaining utterly unique, and by virtue of its slick presentation and impossible-to-put-down gameplay, Hi-Fi Rush manages to punch far above its own weight and snag fifth place on my list.
Fourth Place: A Highland Song (Inkle)
Tumblr media
A Highland Song came out of nowhere at the tail-end of the year and forced me to completely reevalute my game rankings. It is one of the most delightful and charming games I've ever had the chance to play, and has managed to do what I thought was impossible: create a roguelike experience that I actually want to see through to completion.
A Highland Song does this through its emotive embrace of the Scottish Highlands as a setting, with those ancient hills acting as both the main antagonist and a stalwart companion in main character Moira's journey to cross the mountains and reach her uncle's lighthouse by the First of May.
The Highlands are your dear friend. They will provide you food, shelter, and the tools you need to complete your journey. The Highlands are your worst enemy. They will deny you a safe haven when you're exhausted, out of energy, and being soaked through by torrential, bitterly-cold rain; they will give you tools long after you've passed the point where they would have been useful. The hills will preserve you. The hills will kill you.
It is in these contrasts that A Highland Song shines. It is a game about finding yourself, and pushing forward in the face of impossible adversity. There is an indescribable joy to spending days in-game exploring a section of the Highlands, trying to find the way forward, and finally running through one of the game's rhythm-based sections, triumphant Celtic folk music blaring in your ears as you finally find your way. All the while, Uncle Hamish's warm, fond recollections of Celtic folklore and Moira's descriptions of her family life make you want to push on, to learn more about this magical place and the people who inhabit it.
You will not make it to the sea in time in your first run through A Highland Song, nor likely your second or third. Yet each time Moira passes through the mountains, you learn more about them, become more familiar with the slopes and pathways that carve through these lands that are older than time. You will stumble, you will fall, and then, eventually, you will make it to the sea by Beltane.
Third Place: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Nintendo EPD)
Tumblr media
How do you follow up one of the most important and well-regarded games of the 2010s, improve almost everything about it, and even correct its flaws? Tears of the Kingdom manages that and then some. The direct sequel to 2017's Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom follows that game's version of series lead Link through a melancholy journey through a world ravaged by unnatural weather, blight, and time. Link is himself nearly torn apart by the corrupting influence of returning series antagonist Ganondorf (voiced in this installment in fine fashion by Matt Mercer), and the hastily replaced arm granted to him by the sage Rauru grants him new abilities, which replace and improve upon the ones he possessed in the last game.
With these new powers, the game becomes a truly open sandbox. Link is able to build almost anything with his Ultrahand ability, and the Fuse ability not only virtually eliminates the previous game's major flaw, its weapon durability system, by allowing the player to turn virtually any weapon top-tier by properly leveraging fusion materials, it also creates a resource management loop that discourages being stingy with strong resources - since they can be used to create very powerful weapons. Meanwhile, the Ascend and Recall abilities open new avenues in traversal and speed up exploration through Tear's of the Kingdom's massive map, which not only uses the previous game's world map as a base - with lots of altered and added locations to signify the passage of time, including a host of explorable caves - but more than doubles it by also adding floating islands in the sky and a dark, hostile undergound below.
The intense focus on exploration, not to mention some of the best dungeons and bosses in Zelda history, make this a game I had genuine trouble putting down at times as I sunk hundreds of hours into it, as I always felt like there was something new to find around the next corner, or some new treasure to find deep in the underground. Tears of the KIngdom is a masterclass in crafting an open world experience, and easily secures a spot in my top five. It only places so low on this list as a consequence of some blemishes on an otherwise extremely polished and technically impressive product - specifically its story and progression, which feels too much like retreading the structure of Breath of the Wild and not enough like it's blazing its own trail.
Second Place: Cyberpunk 2077 (CD Projekt Red)
Tumblr media
Let's get this out of the way first: Cyberpunk 2077 originally released, infamously, in late 2020 in what was essenitally an unfinished state. However, with its 2.0 update that fundamentally restructures how the game is played, as well as the massive Phantom Liberty expansion dropping this year, I feel comfortable regarding this game as a 2023 release.
I didn't expect to have Cyberpunk 2077 on this list. I certainly didn't expect to see it so high on this list. And yet, here it is. I went in with almost no expectations, and came out with one of my favorite games of the year, and one of the most thoughtful RPGs of the decade. Cyberpunk 2077's great strengths lie in its richly detailed game world and its extremely strong writing, both of which impressed me beyond any preconceptions I may have had, especially given how the game originally launched as a broken, buggy mess.
Cyberpunk 2077's Night City is as fully realized a game world as I've ever seen, brimming with detail and things to both see and do. It is incredibly immersive, and I often found myself forgoing the game's fast travel system in order to simply cruise the moody, neon-soaked streets on my motorcycle as I sped from one gig to the next, taking in little details like the ethnic enclaves in different districts, or how infrastructure differed in poor areas compared to rich ones.
Cyberpunk 2077 tells a story about struggling against impossible odds, and finding hope and beauty in a hopeless and ugly world. In a future where capitalism's atomization and hyperindividualization rend the flesh of society at-large, the life of protagonist V is enriched through the human connections they are able to make as they race against time to save themselves from the biochip in their head eating away at their existence - a piece of technology stolen and then impulsively inserted during their first big job, a job taken in pursuit of the ephemeral and ambiguous glory that comes with being a legend of Night City. Their deteriorating condition throughout the game, and the ever-present acidic commentary of rockerboy Johnny Silverhand, serve as constant reminders of the folly of chasing such impermanent glory.
Whether it's Johnny's former bandmate Kerry, whose insecurities lead him to ostentatious acts of violence and destruction, or Judy, who has suffered loss after loss and desperately tries to find a situation she can control and someone who won't use or leave her, my journey as V centered around finding these connections, and using them not only to save V's life, but preserve her humanity. These themes carried through with the Phantom Liberty expansion, which explores such topics as freedom, survivor's guilt, and governmental corruption and exploitation, and features a delightful turn by Idris Elba as a weary government agent burdened by regret. There are plenty of bombastic setpieces, cleverly-written quests, and moments of intense action, but the things I think I'll always remember are quiet, intimate, human moments, from sitting with and comforting a girl whose girlfriend just killed herself, or meditating with a monk who has no ulterior motive but to bring V a rest in the midst of a grueling situation.
All that to say that while I had a lot of fun with the gameplay, the game world and the writing were what made me fall in love with Cyberpunk 2077, what will likely keep me coming back to the game on replay, and what landed it at number two on the list. The only reason it didn't end up at number one was because there's just one game I played this year which impressed me just that much more - and even then, it’s a thin margin.
First Place: Baldur's Gate 3 (Larian Studios)
Tumblr media
Here I must confess not only have I never played the original Baldur's Gate games - early works by BioWare, a company whose work I generally respect - I had until this year never touched Dungeons and Dragons or any ancillary media. Total blind spot! Never even saw the movie this year! I'd played plenty of tabletop, but never any DnD.
What a treat, then, to be introduced to the world and mechanics of DnD through such a game as Baldur's Gate 3. This game glistens with careful and thoughtful design, and proves the vibrancy and potential that still remains in the classic CRPG style. Baldur's Gate 3's great strengths shine in two major areas, which I will go in more detail about now.
Firstly, the game offers a truly remarkable amount of freedom to the player in allowing them to resolve a situation in a myriad of ways, emulating the flexible nature of tabletop storytelling to an extent I've rarely seen in the video game medium. Want to defeat a boss that's giving you grief by running up to him and shoving him off a cliff? Sure, that works! Want to stealthily surround an enemy camp with explosive barrels and then cast fireball? Ok, go for it!
The other side of this coin is that the game permits a lot of flexibility in permitting the player to truly fuck up royally, while keeping the narrative going and not forcing them into a game over because they "played wrong." Took too long to save some gnomes from a cave-in? Too bad, they suffocated to death! Allowed an important NPC, whose spell was protecting a community from a curse, to be defeated in battle and captured? Tough luck, all those people have died a horrible, agonizing death! It's your fault! Now keep moving. In Baldur's Gate 3, all of your decisions, good or bad, have consequences, and you have to live with them.
Baldur's Gate 3's other great strength lies in its character writing. Every major character, and many minor characters, are written with such depth and nuance, with varied motivations, backstories, and moral alignments, which the player can both influence and be influenced by. Notable standouts include Astarion, the cynical vampire whose acid tongue is a defense mechanism to not let anyone get too close and who delights in thumbing his nose at others and seeking power for himself, but who can be guided towards a more empathetic and caring place; and Shadowheart, the cleric of the dark goddess Shar who finds herself torn between what she sees as her duty to her goddess and what she knows deep down to be the right thing to do.
Every character in Baldur's Gate 3 has a story to tell, and they're all good ones. That alone would land it on this list, but combined with the astonishing freedom it allows players and its infinite replayability rocket it to the top spot. Baldur's Gate 3 is my game of the year.

is fo4 worth it? been thinking abt it ever since seeing it in ps store but dbrnnffbxk i'm afraid of being disappointed or smth so asking u bc u have good vg opinions
HMMMM in my honest opinion I think it's one of those games that's definitely more fun with mods, I definitely don't think it's a BAD game but I also don't think I'd be able to play vanilla for an extended amount of time without getting bored 😭 Im bad at giving well thought out video game reviews so I'll break it down into pros and cons <3
pros:
dogmeat :)
the follower system is nice, more fleshed out than previous bethesda games bc your followers actually have unique dialogue and likes + dislikes. plus you can romance any/all of the companions
building off of the followers: nick valentine :)
the crafting system + settlement building system is a lot of fun, especially with mods that add new stuff to build
it's a good game for people who care more about the exploration & building/crafting aspect than the story imo, if you like to wander around and do side/faction quests and build stuff and upgrade things then you'll probably like it!!
the character creator is pretty good
comes with an optional "survival mode" for players who like a challenge and would like to experience fallout as a pseudo-survival-craft game
both console and pc players can use mods, though the selection of mods for playstation is significantly Less due to sony's restrictions
cons:
MY biggest personal gripe: i personally find the main story kinda Sucks. your character backstory is locked into a hetero marriage and your Offspring is kinda like, the big plot of the game fghfjhhff fo3 and fnv had way better protags imo. but it's still sandbox-esque so you dont HAVE to do the main quest, i just think it's lame 😵‍💫(there are some aspects of the main story that are cool so it's not that the WHOLE thing sucks. your companions & whatever factions you side with definitely make it better) so I use an alternate start mod LMAO
your companions make annoying comments about the player picking up trash when like. picking up trash is a significant part of the game (quit judging me valentine i need these plastic containers to put a roof over ur head!!!)
the game is poorly optimized, i had performance issues on both pc and xbox and I dont know if that ever got officially fixed by the devs 😭😭
YOU WILL at some point experience the horror of being in dialogue with an npc and then a deathclaw suddenly shows up and kills everybody in the area. such is the way of bethesda life
sometimes the map in fo4 feels a lot like quantity over quality. like there's TONS of stuff to do and buildings to explore but are all of them worth it??? perhaps Not

I decided to bring this fanon concept back with something I always wanted from Disney (but may never get.) a Video Game adaption of Amphibia on a console system. (and, the reason I chose PlayStation 4 is because that is the main system I am using, AND because given when Amphibia was still on Television, if it DID have a videogame, then it would be on the PS4, as I don't think the PS5 was released yet.)
Anyway... If Amphibia were given a video game on a console like PlayStation (or, Xbox) I would want it to do the show justice, and be a fully open world game. All of Amphibia would be explorable (though, SOME areas would be blocked off by something) in a manner not unlike Skyrim, and it's huge explorable map. Although for variety, Anne Boonchuy wouldn't be the only playable character. Sasha and Marcy can also be playable at different parts of the game, with Wartwood Village, Toad Tower and Newtopia being your "home bases" depending on which character that you are playing at the time. (Also, Sprig, Captain Grime and Gen. Yunan could be companion characters. ALSO depending on which Calamity Girl you are playing as.) And, what the heck? let's make it an RPG with a level up system, and upgradable weapons and Calamity powers. darn. writing this, I now REALLY want to play this made up game. (curse you, Disney. and your lack of forethought. THIS could make you so much money in pre-orders alone.)

Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series launches to an extremely positive reception on Steam
Copy pasted from an article on Automation-media.com. --------------
Tumblr media
Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series looks to be off to a great start on Steam. While the game was released just a few days ago, it’s already pulling in positive user reviews that rank it among the platform’s finest.
Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series is a remastered collection consisting of 1997’s Klonoa: Door to Phantomile and Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil for PC and modern consoles. Both titles are 2.5D platformers where Klonoa adventures alongside companions such as the ring spirit Huepow.
The fundamental gameplay behind each game is similar, such as the use of Klonoa’s Wind Ring. By using this, players can grab and carry enemies to throw at other enemies and even use those enemies as platforms for double jumps. Players will also need to contend with unique stage gimmicks as they collect items and try to reach the goal of each stage. The series has been long loved by fans, so there’s likely no shortage of players happy about the arrival of these remastered titles.
Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series released in Japan on July 7 and worldwide on July 8. Though the game has only just been made available, the PC version is already amassing user reviews on Steam. As of this writing, there are over 400 user reviews with 98% of them being positive, giving the game a rating of “Very Positive.” If reviews like this continue to roll in, the game’s rating may even reach “Overwhelmingly Positive.”
Other games with user reviews approaching the 100% mark include widely recognized hits such as Portal, Terraria, Stardew Valley, and Hades. However, these games have accumulated many more reviews in comparison to Klonoa, making it too early to put them head-to-head.
What’s partially behind these high review scores is likely that the games already had fans before the release of this remaster. One might assume passionate fans of the originals are the ones mainly buying and reviewing the game, making it easier for scores to trend upwards. On the other hand, you could also say the remaster has won over existing fans with the care put into bringing the games to modern consoles.
If we take a closer look at the reviews for Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series, we can see players praising its faithfulness to the original games’ controls and appeal. Many players also seem happy with the graphical improvements and additional difficulty settings. Plus, there are positive reviews from players saying this is their first Klonoa game. Moreso than satisfying longtime fans, Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series is bringing the fun of these classic titles to new players which has earned it a positive reception at launch.
Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series is now available on PC (Steam), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, and Nintendo Switch.

I'm thinking about playing Fallout 4 again, because I picked up an Xbox copy for cheap in that closing down sale, and I've been looking at what Xbox mods have to offer over PS4 mods.
So far, my thoughts:
While PS4 bans adding textures and code, the only rule on Xbox seems to be no NSFW mods.
Like seriously, there's mods that just add entire new radio stations that are just famous songs. Multiple include Never Gonna Give You Up.
And "no NSFW mods" leaves a lot of leeway. There's plenty of skimpy outfit mods (for female characters). The only one I've noticed falling foul of this rule is, kinda ironically, a port of a BDSM outfit from New Vegas that on Nexus says it has an Xbox version but is missing on the actual site.
I'm unsurprised but still disappointed by the lack of skimpy outfit mods for men.
There appears to be a series of mods that turn the settlement system into SimCity.
There are more real-world guns available to download than there were in the last Call of Duty game I played. (Ghosts)
There's also, surprisingly, entire questlines and new companions. No real interest in those, surprised they can managed that on a console though.

My thoughts on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Tumblr media
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an open world fantasy roleplaying game developed and published by Bethesda Softworks. The game was released on November 11th, 2011 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and personal computer. The game was later released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X. The premise of Skyrim is that you play as a legendary warrior called the dragonborn which is essentially a humanoid creature that has the soul of a dragon within them. Due to having a soul of a dragon within them, the character you play as can easily learn the dragon language which leads them to learning many powerful techniques that the now extinct dragons of The Elder Scrolls series were able to use. Before you find out you're the dragonborn however, the dragons come back for some unknown reason at the time to wreak havoc on the world once again. The player later finds out that they are the dragonborn, a legendary warrior who can slay dragons and consume their souls for more power. The first time I played Skyrim was in 2019 during the summer following my sophomore year of high school. I purchased the game because my friends told me many great things about the game which lead to my purchase of it on the PlayStation 4. When I sat down to play the game, I was expecting to have a great experience with it. What I got was me sitting in front of a tv and video game console for the majority of an entire week. Needless to say, I got more than a great experience. One of the main hooks that drew me into Skyrim was the amount of customization available to the player. The player can choose from a variety of different races, fighting styles, armors, and companions to have on their quest throughout The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The also has a variety of different side quest lines that the player can use to learn more about the world and grow stronger before they fight the threat of the world eater dragon Alduin. I don’t want to say much else without spoiling the game for you because Skyrim truly is a game you need to play for yourself to get the most out of it. If you’re looking for a fun open world action adventure game based in a fantasy setting, you should definitely try Skyrim. Just make sure not to take an arrow to the knee, otherwise you’ll end up as one of the guards of the game’s nine holds.

Detroit Become Human Review:
I think almost any game like this one is perfect for casual players like myself, since there’s not so much gameplay as say Resident Evil or Grand Theft Auto has. It’s a pretty simple choose your own adventure with a press of a few buttons mixed with QTEs that are always present in all of Quantic Dreams’ games. I’m assuming anyways.
Tumblr media
Gameplay (4.5/5):
The game play is pretty simple and straightforward, you basically use the right joystick to move the character. With the controller, you press the left trigger button to look for clues or hints, press the right trigger button for analyzing things (as Connor) and specific button commends (For Playstation Controller it’s X, O, Square or Triangle or XBOX Controller X, B, Y, or A). It’s also perfect if you are new to gaming on a PC or Windows Laptop especially when you are pretty used to being a console gamer.
And now the biggest part of a typical Quantic Dream gameplay the choices you make and the QTEs. For most determinant choices you’ll either press X or O (B) and others where you have to build up a positive or negative relationship between the characters. The most well known relationship you can name positive or negative that can make a huge impact on the story you choose is Hank and Connor’s relationship. As an example, when you first meet Hank, he will be Neutral towards Connor. If you do actions like lie to him, threaten him or in Connor’s special case, he dies in specific circumstances, the relationship becomes more and more hostile. Or if you act friendly towards him and not die, the relationship becomes more and more friendly.
Under those specific circumstances in Connor’s story, you can unlock multiple branching paths. So you can see every death, every fail and basically see everything go to shit.
The only thing I dislike about the gameplay would have to be the way the camera functions, but I’ve gotten used to it ever since.
Story (4/5):
At least, when I played the perfect pacifist run. There are people who hate Androids and treat them like they are disposable, and there are people who use Androids for their own personal gain. Hence why someone like Captain Perkins points out that Connor is an Android hunting other Androids.
Because of the xenophobia towards Androids, Markus has had enough and went deviant. From the moment he does, he can either fight back against Leo Manfred or do nothing. For me, I chose to fight back. Either way Markus gets shot and sent to the dumpster where other Androids start dying or falling apart. As for Kara, she goes Deviant after she grows attachment to a little girl named Alice. I’m just going to say the twist already. Alice is an Android child. It’s a pretty predictable twist when you realize that there are child unit Androids and the fact that Alice always says she isn’t hungry and why Zlatko called her an “it.”
Back to the story, Connor is a Deviant Hunter. He is the last Android out of the main three to become a Deviant. I’m basically calling him a walking symbol of Irony.
And because of how complex the path system is and the fact that there are so many, I’m just going to stick with the Perfect Pacifist Story. After coming back from the dead, Markus meets the people of Jericho. Josh, North, and Simon are who I like to call the Jericho Trio. Honestly if I were to pick who gets to be the main characters in a second game, these three will be perfect candidates. I will talk about those three in the characters section in a minute.
When all three become Markus’s companions, and Jericho sees him as a leader overtime, Markus leads the Jericho members and other Androids he rounded up to peacefully protest the discrimination against Androids. Reactions are realistically mixed amongst human civilians, with some seeing the Androids as people and calling them gendered pronouns like “he” or “she.” Others are still against Androids and keep saying that they are nothing but machines.
Kara acts like Alice’s mother after Todd has another emotional meltdown and takes it out in Alice. Plus, Kara has also been torn apart and beaten by Todd multiple times to the point where she’s needed repairs. Kara escapes Todd and runs away with Alice and stole wire cutters just so she and Alice are able to stay in a place where they’ll be able to lay low for a while. She runs into Luther who becomes a part of Alice’s family and Alice’s father figure.
Connor gains friendship with Hank not because the mission requires him to do so, but because he’s fascinated by Hank. He’s split between his missions and whether Deviants deserve to live or die. Overtime, he starts to display more and more human emotions and human-like behavior.
In the Perfect Pacifist run, Connor becomes Deviant, betraying “Amanda” in the process. Markus and the rest of Jericho successfully win over the public’s opinion and they finally get the equal rights they deserve and you can hope that they get treated with a lot more human decency than before the Peaceful Protest.
Connor’s friendship with Hank has brought out the best in Hank and he stopped hating Androids and found new hope. Connor no longe has to follow orders from the “Amanda” in his head.
Kara, Luther and Alice all successfully run away to Canada to start over a brand new life after the guy at the airplane terminal selflessly let’s the three over the border.
So yeah the story is engaging and yeah, the racism allegories are pretty much all over the place especially when you switch over to Markus, but I’m slightly mixed on it here, and it doesn’t just paint men or white people as the perpetrators of Android violence. Sometimes it’s women or other people of color abusing the Androids or treating them badly. And it also doesn’t matter how the Deviants are presented physically. They still get treated disrespectfully. Those are elements in the racism and slavery allegories that I do like.
However, why just use Markus to show how bad Androids are being treated? I have no problems with fiction using a fictional race for these types of allegories. Zootopia and Beastars did a good job with their racism allegories by having specific animals like bunnies not being taken seriously as cops, and foxes and wolves not being trusted just for being predator animals. In this game, with androids, because they are perfect in every single way and do jobs such as being maids and butlers, janitors, police Androids, military androids, etc, there are people that have an issue with Androids and even treat them like trash.
But I ask, why have it done only to Markus out of the three? Why not have Connor face difficulties even though he’s on the humans’ side? And no, Gavin bullying Connor doesn’t count. As I will mention in the characters section, Gavin is a weak character. Kara does face difficulties as an Android herself, but not in the same degree as Markus. That is my only gripe with DBH’s take on the racism allegory.
This doesn’t ruin the story for me, because it’s a realistic storyline to tell, plus a few tweaks here and there like having Connor face discrimination too and Kara having more difficulties getting help for Alice related to her being an Android.
Characters (3/5):
Now this is the biggest flaw in this game. Mostly because of the “villains” according to villains wiki, Gavin Reed (aka the man who a lot of people simp for someone who has no character, myself included), Captain Richard Perkins, Sixty (the RK800 Connor in the Cyberlife Tower), Zlatko, and Todd. They are all the weakest characters in this game to the point where I now understand why people wrote for Gavin the most and why people love Sixty.
Richard is THE most wasted character in this game. There were so many opportunities for him to interfere with Connor and Hank’s case and see right through Connor’s plans. The only antagonistic thing he’s done was sink the boat all the people of Jericho were on and shoot at Markus and the other Androids even though they were being peaceful. But all that happened at the very last chapter in the pacifist run. That is weak.
Sixty also only does something antagonistic when you play as Deviant Connor with a good relationship with Hank at the tower.
Gavin Reed… he’s a walking blank piece of paper that they forgot to give a character. What else is there to say really? It’s the fans doing all of the character writing for him let’s be honest here. I mean, even Neil Newbon, his voice actor gave Gavin some great headcanons.
Zlatko can be defeated when Luther joins Kara and Alice and his mutilated experiments (I’m assuming) kills him.
Todd is also just a dangerous and unstable man who is abusive towards Alice and Kara who are both Androids. Correct me if I’m wrong, but was there also a path where he finds Kara and Alice and depending on the choices Kara made, and he can either let them go or rat them out? Either way not that much of a threat as I thought he would be.
There’s also Leo Manfred who is also just a bigger asshole than Gavin is, because he only cared about his father Carl Manfred’s money and treated Markus unfairly because he’s an Android and uses said money on Red Ice. He also gives his father an apology and promised to go to rehab via the tablet Markus clicks when he comes back to Carl’s house before the finale.
So yeah, all of those antagonistic characters are the weakest characters with the exception of Amanda who is the only active antagonist. The protagonists and supporting characters have more complex personalities. Hank is a good example of a complex and tragic character. He lost his six year old son in a tragic accident and because a human doctor was too high on Red Ice to operate on him, an Android tried to save his life, but it was too late. This then led Hank to drink his sorrows away and he even flirted with death by playing Russian Roulette. He stopped doing that after Connor came into his life (in the Deviant Connor run that is).
North I will be honest here, I was neutral on at first but then I started to like her more. She starts out being cold towards Markus at first and hated humans as a whole, but then after seeing Markus be a good leader and again in the Pacifist run, she sees that violence isn’t the only option to take when fighting for rights. She does have every single right to be angry and be tempted to use violence against the very humans that hurt her. I will not take that away from her or blame her for thinking like this. However, in the part where I have to steal supplies like bio components and blue blood and some Android workers wanted to join Jericho, for some odd reason, North and Simon while I’m at it don’t like the fact that Markus takes the Android security workers with them. Like excuse me? Those Android security people never chose to work with humans. That’s the reason why I was neutral towards her and Simon at first. But then started to like her after seeing North’s relationship with Markus become positive after he talks about his time before Jericho. So yeah, she’s my fifth favorite character.
Simon I was also neutral towards before I started to like him. The moment he sacrificed himself to help Markus and the others was great. I’m of course talking about the hijacking of the news station. Surprisingly not much with his character is done, but hey, at least he does a lot of things in the story, unlike the “antagonists” I listed.
Josh is written pretty realistically in my opinion. He is a pessimist, but also hoped that the people in Jericho will be okay. He was also kinda cold towards Markus, but not in the same vein as North. He also assisted Markus in everything and still supported him even when he disagreed with everything Markus said and done.
And now the big three, Connor, Kara and Markus. Connor is complex since he is loyal and focused, but he is also socially awkward as he tries to make conversation with Hank during the first scene where he tries to befriend him, but ends up making him angry at him. It just shows that as perfect Connor was programmed to be, he’s a bit rusty. Deviant Connor also starts gaining some more human flaws by hesitating to shoot the Tracis, and refusing to shoot the Chloe Android.
Kara is also complex because she steals in order for her and Alice to survive (such as the wire cutters in the second chapter and stealing tickets from a couple in the last chapter) Alice dislikes when Kara steals the tickets, but hey, it’s all good since they got to Canada in time. She does act motherly towards Alice and remembers to be firm with people who panic or do something rash such as Rose’s son who is freaking out over the possibility of the police arresting him and his mother over hiding Androids from them.
Markus is complex too since on one hand, he’s bitter and angry about the mistreatment he faces and the needless amount of death that happens to his people, but he also knows that not every human is bad. Since he’s had a positive relationship with Carl Manfred, who by the way, is the second purest character in the game next to Alice and sees him as his father. It’s such a sweet relationship so I pretty much cried on the inside when I saw that Carl can die.
Those three can also make evil choices which can make the story even darker in my opinion, because not only is the story dark, you can actively be cruel in this game to get the worst ending.
Also, Elijah Kamski is the typical mysterious philosophical character who invented Androids. So yeah there’s that. I also saw how people headcanoned him and Gavin as half siblings to be honest.
Some of the protagonists and supporting cast are characters that you can pretty much run into in real life. The antagonists? Literally anyone can write a Todd, a Gavin Reed, or a Zlatko. I’m just saying. There is only one positive I can say about the antagonists: it makes room for fans to get creative and give those cookie cutters an actual character. Just look at Detroit Evolution and Detroit Reawakening.
Graphics (4.5/5):
If we ignore how uncanny and unintentionally funny some of the cutscenes are such as Gavin’s weird ass wink, if we can even call it that and Chloe breaking the fourth wall in the main menu, the graphics of the game are pretty good.
Because of how realistic the characters look and move, there are restrictions on how they can be designed. But because we have actual actors, there is real emotion put into the actions and dialogue of the character. When North was close to breaking down because she revealed her past as a Traci, we can see and hear how emotional she felt talking about her dark past.
The shots are also beautiful, like Markus looking at the sunset after peacefully marching with other Androids, Connor and Hank talking in the snowy weather after talking to Kamski, and the marry-go-round scene with Kara, Luther and Alice.
There’s honestly nothing much else to say, considering that this is just the graphics, but yeah, if you like realism in video games, and don’t mind the uncanny nature of some moments, this is the game for you.
Acting (5/5):
Finally, the acting. The acting is great. I never saw a single movie or show with Bryan DeChart, Jesse Williams or Valorie Curry, but damn, they can act. They all pull off acting as Androids that don’t have much emotions up until they go deviant.
Clancy Brown… insert any Mr. Krabs joke here. What is there to say about Clancy? What hasn’t been said? He has range.
Neil Newbon. He basically turned nothing into gold here. Yes, I am still referring to his performance as Gavin, but him as Elijah is also great. He pulls off jerk characters and mysterious characters well, but I wish that there was more for him to work with, as he only played minor roles.
Since this was all also done with motion capture, the body language that everyone plays is well done here too. Not much else to say here, because the acting is really good.
Conclusion:
The story and acting are the best parts of the game if you don’t mind the uncanny and unintentionally funny moments due to the realism of the graphics. However if you’re like me and want to see a lot more complex characters other than the main three and supporting cast in the antagonists, then you’ll just be a bit disappointed.
For me, it’s the story that pulled me in.
Overall, the score for Detroit Become Human is a 16 out of 20.

NGL even as someone who loves the romance stuff, and will make Tav or whoever kiss Assy ten (10) times a day, and who gets why Larian is weirdly focused on the kiss anims even though they're not broken, I wish they would knock it off and fix other things first. (yes, there was a time when kisses were borked, and they fixed them, and then continued to make changes to kisses even though they were fine. why???)
Such as the obnoxious bug that fucks up the group unhide if you have summons that are not controllable, or who don't have a hide action.
You can group hide, but group UNhide with a controller is broken. (I use an xbox controller on PC)
Even if you ungroup the summons! You have to either dismiss them, or go one by one and manually unhide each companion.
Which is a pain in the ASS when you've got no party limit mods.
(and no, t's not the mod. It's a general bug, because console players and players w/o mods on PC are having the issue too)

Okay! All done with "Fallout: New Vegas"!
I min-maxed my character too hard and accidentally optimised all the fun out of the game! Whoops! My bad!
(I did it twice, in fact! Got bored with my first Guns/Explosives sneaky guy, so I made a new character in hardcore mode and restarted the game to play as an Energy Weapons/power-armor guy)
((when will I finally learn to play a video game without having its wiki open on my phone the whole time? Scientists are unsure!))
This was my first hardcore-mode playthrough, and it was also the first time I ever learned that you actually CAN have two companions at the same time in New Vegas! it just has to be one humanoid and one NON-humanoid!
So I no longer had to choose between Ed-E, my beloved; or Arcade Gannon, my Doctor Boyfriend; but could have both of them with me together at the same time!
Which was lovely!
But the game got even more ridiculously stupidly easy from that point.
Because as much fun as it was to have Doctor Boyfriend and I tromping around the countryside in our matching suits of Remnants Power-Armor with our beloved pet Eyebot by our side, doing an Indomitable Antifa Genocide while also caving in the skull of an Old World billionaire with a golf club for funsies on the side...
...it wasn't THAT fun.
Once you can vaporise any enemy in the entire game in under a second, everything just kinda loses its allure.
Even hardcore-mode stopped being hardcore role-playing and just started being an extra set of menu-clicking chores. No thoughtfulness or tough decisions required.
Was absolutely drowning in caps from all those Legion hit-squads that kept manifesting themselves for Gatling Laser Target Practice, too.
"the kAiSaR has marked you for death!"
Oh word? Pretty brave talk from some dorkass cosplay loser armed with naught but a few pointy sticks against the supreme pinnacle of the Old World's military might. World War 4 technology versus World War 3 technology? Get vaporised, idiot. 💥
But yeah, only level 29 yet most of my skills were at level 100, my DT was 46, and my primary weapon could throw out like 510+dps or something ludicrous like that.
God mode.
Might as well just explode random ragdolls in a level-editor at that point. 🤷🏻‍♂️
---
And speaking of exploding ragdolls, next up I'll be playing through the Halo franchise for the first time!
Picked up CE Anniversary, 2, 3, and 4 from pawn shops over the last two weeks.
I played CE on a borrowed gaming PC back when it came out, but was too poor to be a console gamer for the rest of them, so I never got to experience the rest of the story or the series' gameplay developments.
I did play a 2d fan-game prequel tho. That was pretty fun! Forget about that entirely until just now.
Probably will have to wait until after this weekend's heatwave passes though. This old 360 really starts chugging once it heats up. Every time New Vegas crashed or glitched out, I'd feel the side of the Xbox and sure enough that thing would be running a fever 🥵
I think while I wait I'll open up the 360 and see how much dust I can clear out of its cooling system. I expect there'll be generous amounts up in there...
