Weibo Night recap: Friendly faces

Weibo Night gave us a few sweet interactions between Xiao Zhan and his collegues. It's a long evening, so I think it's always nice for the star guests to meet some known & friendly faces. 🙂

First there are some adorable interactions between Xiao Zhan and Yang Zi. The two stars of The Oath of Love had been Weibo King and Queen for Weibo Night 2019 and 2020. This time, they met when going up to the stage at the end of the ceremony, tried to let other people stand in the center of the stage and failed, and eventually left together when the group shot and confetti rain was over.

Xiao Zhan also had some cute little interactions with Ayunga. At Weibo Night, Xiao Zhan greeted Ayunga, who was sitting behind him, with a smile, and later congratulate him when Ayunga went towards the stage to receive an award. Both of them have been on Our Song s1.

There was also a short moment between Xiao Zhan and Zhang Ruoyun when both went on stage to collect their awards. Both of them have been in Joy of Life s1.

Poteva essere un cult del genere ma..

Ho pensato se questo drama meritasse “quattro righe” di commento e alla fine, dopo attenta riflessione mi sono detta. Drammista avvisato, drammista salvato!

Finito The Untamed con relativo sconvolgimento emotivo, un tempo da lupi che ti fa disperare al pensiero che siamo in estate e riduce la vita mondana a -0, con la sola visione on air di King of the land all’attivo, che non sta provocando il mio entusiasmo, tergiversavo su dove sbattere la testa. Reborn rich mi attendeva con la porta spalancata, ma le correnti d’aria, con queste temperature, non sono tanto gradite. Ho quindi deciso temporaneamente di chiudere quella porta.

Considerato che un drama con Wang Yibo lo avevo già visto, mi sono detta: guardiamo la filmografia di Xiao Zhan più recente. Ero curiosa di vederlo all’opera post scandalo 227,che gli aveva distrutto quasi la carriera.

Viki mi proponeva 2 titoli, The Youth Memories e the Oath of Love. Il primo non è stato completamente tradotto, ma dalla sinopsi tratta sicuramente di società, politica e istituzioni Cinesi. E siccome per 3 anni all’università mi sono dovuta sorbire trattati in inglese su società, politica e istituzioni bu zhōngguó, mi sono detta: stiamogli alla larga e buttiamoci sul secondo che ha i sottotitoli italiani! Oltretutto the Oath of Love mi attirava per altri due motivi: aveva ricevuto agli ultimi Weibo Night parecchi riconoscimenti ed ero curiosa di vedere Yang Zi all’opera dopo Go Go Squid.

I primi episodi mi hanno lasciato 😳😳😵‍💫. Vedere Yang Zi calata nel ruolo della studentessa universitaria, non matura, un po stalker con le treccine e i capelli bruciacchiati mi faceva strano. Una Tong Nian invecchiata pareva resuscitata dal regno dei drami a distanza di 4 anni.

Mi faceva strano anche vedere Xiao Zhan posato, algido, elegante, dritto come un fuso. In pratica il gemello mancato di Hu Yitian! Però uno pensa: 4 anni sono passati, il ruolo del dottore bello, talentuoso, germofobo, un po’ asociale 30 enne richiede quello e lui lo interpreta bene!

La storia di per se non è brutta. Vi è un dottore figo, un padre vecchio stampo asiatico malato, una figlia devota, tutti i cliché tipici dei drammi asiatici:

Amiche che danno pessimi consigli e che sarebbe meglio pensassero a casa propria.

Ex innamorati di ritorno dopo anni che pensano di essere indimenticabili.

Colleghe che si credono già con la fede al dito.

Innamorati per cui la vita sessuale è un optional fino a forse dopo il matrimonio.

Scarpe che fanno male con relative ciabatte acquistate d’urgenza.

Cadute e prese al volo.

Qualcuno che scompare.

Incomprensione dovute al fatto di non comunicare.

La pioggia.

Genitori con certificato di figli di proprietà incluso.

E l’elenco potrebbe essere ancora lungo. Potete fidarvi, in queste 29 puntate ci trovate tutto a parte il rapimento, quello purtroppo manca.

Posso capire che agli amanti del genere Romance The Oath of Love possa piacere. La storia ha un senso logico, le puntate sono in numero più che accettabile, non ci sono i classici buchi di trama, le musiche sono carine.

Yang Zi il suo lavoro lo porta a casa egregiamente. Oltretutto in questo drama gli sceneggiatori le hanno dato uno scopo nella vita ed un carattere. Il personaggio cresce, sopprime le insicurezze tipiche dell’età che dovrebbe dimostrare e addirittura aiuta il fidanzato a diventare migliore sia professionalmente che personalmente. L’unico difetto che le posso trovare è che gli 8-9 anni di differenza, che dovrebbe avere nei confronti del lead, non si vedono. Coetanei sono e lo sembrano.

Lo stesso per Xiao Zhan. Il suo Gu Wei è molto centrato, mi è piaciuto.

Ma…….

I ma arrivano.

La parte medica è trattata veramente con molto pressappochismo. Il nostro Gu Wei è un gastroenterologo. Vengono a sfoggiati termini medici in ogni dove, ma una mascherina, dove ci sono pazienti immunodepressi, la devi far indossare. Specialmente se il personaggio in scena ha il raffreddore! Qua invece viene indossata alla cavolo di cane mentre vengono applicati 2 miseri punti. La privacy e il consenso del paziente poi è inesistente!

Solo per fare un esempio: ad un certo punto si presenta dal dott. Gu uno spasimamente della lead e chiede la cartella clinica del padre di questa. E gli altri dottori lo guardano allibiti perché non glie la da! Accusandolo di gelosia!

Ma la questione che mi ha lasciato più perplessa è un’ altra, ed è secondo me più seria considerando il genere del drama.

La chimica tra due lead è pari a 0.

Yang Zi si impegna, molla bacetti a destra e manca, ma l’altro lato sembra ricettivo come un vegano in mezzo ad una mandria di bovini.

Credo che chiunque abbia visto Love020 abbia in mente questa scena:

Qua non siamo a questi livelli. I due fanno quello che devono senza facce strane, ma sembrano 2 attori che devo recitare una scena d’amore.

Da sta immagine potete capire tutto. Il ragazzo ha un bel blocco. Ogni volta che si deve avvicinare alla partner anche solo per un abbraccio, sembra che stia abbracciando la cugina.

Non mi sono andata a cercare i Bts di questo drama, ma metterei la mano sul fuoco che una scena del genere non esiste. La chimica, la comunicazione di un profondo sentimento, fatta solo con degli sguardi, nasce dal sentirsi completamente a proprio agio con il partner di lavoro. E capisco perché dopo 4 anni se Xiao Zhan e Wang Yibo, per puro caso, sono allo stesso evento, vengano ispezionati ancora con radar, microscopio, scanner e giù di li.

Ho fatto veramente fatica nelle ultime puntate. Perché queste scene abbondano—> annoiano. E devo ammettere che in alcuni punti il telecomando ha avanzato sul tasto >> senza grossi rimpianti.

Ha conclusione di ciò ho scoperto che The Oath of Love è stato girato nel 2019, doveva uscire nel 2020 ma poi è stato messo in freezer suppongo per tutto quello che è successo al povero Xiao Zhan.

Per cui mi domando: perché Yang Zi mi sembra più vecchia di qualche bell’anno rispetto a Go Go squid (uscito nel 2019)? Colpa di trucco e parrucco sbagliati?

Ma sopratutto : Dove è finito sto sorriso?

Mi sa che mi tocca The youth Memories e i sottotitoli in inglese per venire a capo del mistero. 😅

Why I feel so sad for Xiao Zhan for winning the Weibo King award again in 2021

Right now you might see a lot of people spreading the fact that Xiao Zhan won Weibo King again with joy and happiness.  I can only personally feel sadness and regret.  Because when I look back at the year 2020, and what Xiao Zhan went through, Weibo had a big part to play in that story.  They took advantage of his pain to make money and profit from it.  They did little to stop what was happening because to them it was traffic.

His fans who left the 85 million votes for him for Weibo King probably weren’t thinking about what Weibo means to Xiao Zhan.  They weren’t thinking about how Xiao Zhan disengaged from the platform completely, moving his small interactions over to Oasis and Douyin to escape the toxicity inherent in the conversations taking place on Weibo.  All that they were thinking was “We want to show him how much we love him!”

Well you know what I think is love?  Listening to your own idol’s words.

Let’s take a small journey back through 2020 and listen to Xiao Zhan’s own words on what he wanted his fans to do this year.

I won’t rehash 227 itself - if you want my take on that event, then I’ll write another blog post about that, it being almost a year I’m probably finally reaching a point where I can discuss it rationally without bursting into tears remembering my own personal experience with it.  But rather, let’s take a look at what happened after 227.

On March 1, Xiao Zhan studio issued their first official statement.  What did they say?

Recently, we have noticed some controversies about Xiao Zhan fans, occupying some social public resources, and also causing trouble to everyone. We deeply regret and apologize for the impact of this incident. We are very grateful to all fans for their support and love to Xiao Zhan. At the same time, we also sincerely call on all love to be positive, and hope that everyone can chase stars rationally. While doing a good job of self-protection during the epidemic, we will work together in a more positive way and support things that bring positive energy to society.

On April 24, Xiao Zhan said something and his studio reposted.

He gave his first interview after 227 on May 6.  He expanded upon the statement he made on April 24 when he said he was working hard to improve. He spoke about the controversy, the responsibility he feels as a public figure, and his desire not to control his fans but to guide them to do positive works like participate in charity that improves society.  He felt like as an artist, his role was to continue to improve his acting and his singing.  

“As for the people who love and support me, I hope they won’t do some extreme things, or hurt other people, or even hurt themselves.  I hope that they can protect and love themselves, and live their lives well.  Live their lives well.”  “And if it’s possible, outside of school and work, we can do things together to help others and contribute to society in a meaningful way.”  “I think charity is a part of an ordinary person’s social responsibility.”

Again in May, following a controversy when a teacher recorded her classroom cheering him on, Xiao Zhan was forced to make statements encouraging his fans to live their lives well.

Take particular note here of the specific call out not to participate in activities such as ranking (like the Weibo King votes).

In July, when his own fans were accused of cyber bullying others again, Xiao Zhan studio released a statement saying that they would defend any victim of cyber bullying, even someone bullied by his own fans.

Regardless of who’s a fan, taking legal measures is a legitimate behavior

Entrusted by Mr. Xiao Zhan, we issued the following lawyer's statement: We welcome all kind criticisms and reminders, and resolutely oppose and resist all cyber violence. No matter who the cyber violence is directed at, it is an illegal act and should bear corresponding legal responsibilities. We are willing to provide legal assistance to the above-mentioned parties who have been violated by online violence, and we are also willing to provide assistance within our capacity for their rights protection operations. In July, Xiao Zhan and Xiao Zhan Studio met up with representatives from Weibo to discuss the cyber bullying that he had been subjected to this year.  But was this at Weibo’s own desire to clean up their platform?  No.  This whole time Weibo was profiting from every hot search that drove more traffic to their platform.  It was the Cyberspace Administration of China that DIRECTED Weibo to clean up their mess.

Over the years we have seen Weibo ban accounts from time to time that are so blatant with their cyber attacks that they have no other choice.  But often they will wait until stars pursue legal action before doing so.  And they will only release the real-world IDs of users when under a police investigation pursuant to a lawsuit.  I’m not suggesting the platform should start doxxing its own users, but rather ban all malicious and slanderous behaviour from the outset.  Right now under Chinese law anyone with over 30,000 fans who says slander against another can be pursued by the law.  Weibo should act before it needs to come to that.

Chinese Star News did an interesting video on Fanquan culture and the ways in which Weibo profits from it.  If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s worth a watch.

Ever since the summer, Xiao Zhan has been very careful and direct in all his public interactions.  Most of his events were pre-recorded.  Only at the end of the year did he start doing live events again, and when he was surrounded by friends he was okay, but as we could see from the recent iQiyi event when he is without friends around him he still struggles.

It must have been SO hard for Xiao Zhan to continue to work behind the scenes in 2020, recording his new show Ace Troops, attending some events in secret, shooting some advertisements that he wasn’t sure would be able to make it to the air - and some events that got leaked and then had his portion cut out.  It must have been so, so hard.

So to me, the least that we can do as fans is to listen to what Xiao Zhan has asked of us.  And over and over again he said that all he wanted from his fans was for us to live our lives well.  To not do extreme things.  He wants things to go smoothly.  He wants to take his time, to choose his events carefully, and come back at his own pace.

So what do his fans do?  They massively vote for him to win the Weibo King award.  This has put him in an impossible position.  

Either he needs to decline the award, and face criticism from everyone about being arrogant in a year that he should be grateful.  Or he has to suck it up and show up to an award hosted by a platform that did little to nothing to help him when he was in pain, and instead in fact profited from his pain.  

He will have to put a smile on his face and say thank you for recognizing that I was a high traffic star last year, even when the majority of his traffic was due to cyber attacks.

Why would his fans put him in this impossible position?  Back when this award was first announced, his own major fan club leaders requested fans not to vote for Weibo King.  If you wanted to vote for anything, then you should vote for his acting role in The Wolf, because that was about his professional work - not for Weibo King, which is literally like an award for Prom King.  It’s a popularity award, nothing more.

Will Weibo King help him to come back faster?  No.  Will it make industry leaders want to sign him on for more TV and film works?  No.  Speaking from experience working in the industry for many years, the only thing that industry professionals care about is ratings on the shows that are produced.  And Xiao Zhan cannot rely on his fans alone for ratings.  If his ratings are going to continue to increase, then he needs to attract the respect of a wider audience.  And if that wider audience is already of the impression that Xiao Zhan is a loose canon because his fans are out of control, this massive over-rating of Weibo King only reinforces that belief.

Just look at this graph.

Xiao Zhan fans are posting it with pride, saying look how well we did!  Xiao Zhan trounced the competition!  But the reality is that all other stars’ fan groups had also instructed their fans not to vote for this award, because they all see it for what it is - a popularity contest that can hurt more than it can help.  Xiao Zhan winning by such a large margin only shows how little his fans listen to him.

Now instead of Xiao Zhan deciding for himself when and where to come back, what events he wishes to attend, he’s going to have to make an appearance at this awards show and slap a smile on his face and say thank you.  

Thank you Weibo, for profiting off my pain.

The story of Bojunyixiao’s WEIBO NIGHT 2022/2023 📝

this is my attempt to archive in one post what happened in this event. from days before the actual show and most of the rumos/hearsays going around. also moments from both the boys as individuals during the show and of course, everyone’s favorite, cpn moments. it’s the long awaited same-event from them so it’s only right that it be documented well. i will not be talking about the red carpet / livestream drama so this post remains positive.

I. The Anticipation / Announcements

As soon as the “winners” were announced for the user recommendation portion on 3/20, people were already celebrating that we will have a same-stage and same event incident. This is because, both XZ & WYB were awarded in the top 3 as popular personalities on Weibo. Also Yibo won in all categories where his works were nominated movie/drama/variety show/song. At this time there was really no question that GG is gonna attend because his votes for KING/ Oath of Love were astronomical but Yibo on other hand had melons related to him saying he would not be attending. XFXs were hard at work trying to win tickets to Weibo night but MTJJs weren’t because there was really no confirmation or even leaked schedule for 3/25. BXGs were also hard at work trying to get tickets for fan-sites to get in.

It’s been a long running rumor that GG will be one of the guests that will be announced last. However WB night account posted a banner of the attendees for the livestream which showed him. Also the weibo opening screen on 3/22 evening had him as an attendee. So this certainly “spoiled” it tho there was never any doubt that GG will be there. I say “spoil” because Weibo Night account made a big deal of announcing attendees in “batches” depending on their perceived status at the event. So this spoils a couple of attendees, including GG, which were not formally announced yet.

The next day 3/23, Yibo pops up on his weibo account and announces the he will be attending. This certainly allowed us to breathe a sigh of relief. His VCR for the awards night was also shared. He really went “surprise bitch, i’m attending” on us which is certainly on brand for him.

AT THIS POINT, the fandom is screaming because we finally have the long awaited same-event. Even if they don’t interact or even look at each other, as long as we can see them at the same awards night then this is a win. It is also important to note that there are a lot of turtles who have never experienced this. Truly one for the books.

3/24, the last day before the actual awards show, Xiao Zhan was announced via his post on his weibo account.

II. Pre-show rumors and everything else

• The notorious “seating arrangement” started going around in the evening of 3/23, as event organizers were already hard at work at the venue in Shanghai. It was rumored that they are in the same zone but XZ is in Row 1 and WYB in Row 2.

jokes were also going around that they should have a loveseat 😂😂😂

• 3/24, there was a video/photo of GG being shared, boarding his plane & arriving in Shanghai. The moto leather jacket he was wearing certainly caught our eye. It’s by Tod’s and the look is similar to what WYB had been wearing when he is photographed @ the airport.

The things that gets us tho is why is he so dressed up only for a plane ride? This is supposed to be mister comfortable clothes hopping on a plane. We’ve seen it so many times. So why is he so stylish? Even if he has a work related engagement after the flight, he can just change. We’re speculating that he is dressing up for the love of his life 💕 He has to look extra fresh when he arrives in Shanghai and they see each other. Also if you look at the side by side i posted above, you can’t really tell that the one on the right is GG when you first look at it.

• GG wore an off white suit coat for filming his Weibo Night VCR. It’s been a while since he wore Off White and when he does, it’s for an event where he and Yibo are gonna attend. Off White has some CPN history because of their “couple wear” in 2018.

The style of the coat is also similar to what Yibo was wearing in his announcement poster. It’s an interesting choice to say the least.

• Some next level coincidence is the night before the event, the Moon & Venus are clearly seen in the night sky. 🌙 and knowing our cpn symbolism history with these two, turtles can’t help but think it’s fate and a sign of good things to happen. also the next time this will happen again 2026.

Then you have the strongest aurora in Tasmania for 32 years. The last time the strongest aurora appeared was in 1991 which is ZZ’s birth year.

This is some kind of cosmic-level romance power 😂

• The real icing on the cake is the night of 3/24, LRLG decides to share a post of events that happened on the same day. All the details and sweets on that are here. 🍬

Didn’t happen because SINA weibo decided to be a bitch and not give the fans what they want. 🤷🏻‍♀️

They didn’t get the popularity award as we expected them to, or even for their dramas, but I think those got consolidated so people don’t have to get up the stage too many times. I found WB night went more with specific things like XZ getting an acting award and Bobo for movie-actor. Maybe they also consulted with the attendees on this. XZ didn’t even get the KING title, but it must be true that he didn’t want it. I mean, any fan who knows and pays attention to what XZ does will feel that another traffic award is not what he needs right now. He’s won it several times already. His passion is acting and he will concentrate on that. Good for him. Good for them.

Yibo immediately left the venue after getting his award because he still has to film night scenes for his drama. GG stayed till the end, but a video showed him running out the venue. He was also in a hurry to leave. lol.

Overall I wanna say that it was as peaceful as it can be. No drama onstage is so much better. At least they did their part in this circus and of course, blessed us with their presence.

V. Time for some post-show Sugar round-up 🍬🍭

• XZ’s look screams Disney Prince! and also, like a grown up version of the Little Prince which is his favorite and have been tied to him & WYB. It’s also from the brand Elie Saab that is popular with making intricate gowns for women and wedding gowns too.

I’m personally happy to see him in this fit! The perfect balance of masculine and feminine 🤍

• The venue where this was shot is the same place one of his Tod’s ad was filmed + Bobo’s Chanel ad. This was already CPNd before and it’s nice to see this place coming up again.

• In XZS’ photoshoot behind the scenes, one of the things on camera that was emphasized was a flower. sure, it could just be because it was pretty but i’ve said so many times that XZS does videos carefully and every frame tells a story. What a coincidence that out of all the shots they can insert as filler, it’s of a PEONY???? I mean. We know who the White Peony of Luoyang is. Wang Yibo.

Plus there was a frame that you can mistake as WYB. They really look alike in some angles! Soulmate things!

• Yibo’s suit for the night is by Givenchy, he is in all black and it makes his Chanel high jewelry accessory stand out more. It’s been a pattern for him, for the past few events to have Chanel as a highlight. Anyway, what blew my mind is how this is a contrast to GG’s. It still matches tho. They can get married. The aesthetic is just 🥹🥹🥹 Yes, GG is not the “bride/wife” but you get the point, how they look together is truly something.

• You can see the element of a “television” in both of their photoshoots. is this a popular theme that i don’t know about??? why is it always them??? Then you have the bts for yibo’s photoshoot, he was holding a video recorder. the TV for GG’s in the meantime, had that V effect.

• This shot is so reminiscent of that scene from Hidden Blade. Again, why would you use this shot??? I'm pretty sure they have better ones but they went with this. an interesting choice.

• Fans are saying WYB bowed in the direction of GG here, but I think it was more of him bowing to everyone and being polite.

• One type of candy that I don’t usually go for, because it’s too invasive and sometimes there are things that we shouldn’t look imply. but we can’t help but notice how their lips are bruised. or maybe these are sores? because of the weather? idk man. yibo bites his lips usually, but ZZ? hmmmm. i’m not confirming anything, just kinda sus that they are in the same city and this happens. 🤔

• not sure about this but fans are hearing GG say “where is wang yibo” to the assistant. here is the video.

A cute incident showing they have the same braincell. lol. seats apart and the same mannerism. i love them!!!

XZS posted another behind the scenes and the BGM and how sexy everything sounds makes my mind go places. The lines goes: I will keep the lights on, until -- till you get back home. Who is this line for??? are you gonna wait for someone who still has night scenes to shoot to come home??? Damn it. Yibo is so a lucky man and I wanna fight him. HAHAHAHAHAHA! He has Xiao Zhan to come home to. I'm happy they are in the same city cause WYB is often exhausted and does long hours for his shoots, that's a given but it's not everyday that he has XZ waiting for him. <3

• LASTLY, my favorite is Weibo Night’s choice to cut to certain things and people depending on who is onstage. I can’t believe they did it to Yibo tho. HAHAHAHAHAHA. So it’s like, for example, AngelaBaby ( actress ) is onstage, they will show Huang XiaoMing’s reaction. Why? They are exes. Then when WY and WJK were accepting their respective awards, the camera cut to YYXQ who is their bandmate in TFBoys and their fans were hoping for a reunion. You get the point?

Even non-cpfs picked up on what happened. After Bobo’s speech, the camera cut to the audience but you can see the CPF HEADBANDS. RED AND GREEN. The event knows. They weren’t that brave to cut to Xiao Zhan tho. 😂😂😂😂 and well, imagine the pandemonium between the two fandoms if they did. What this tells me tho it’s out there. BJYX is known. This is a show broadcasted on CCTV. The stream is watched by 300M++ people, and they still chose to do it. Unless the camera person whatever is a turtle then there is no point in doing this. It was definitely a 👀 moment. What do you all know? Or maybe they were trying to appeal to the very small number of CPFs who were hoping for a same stage? hmmmmmm… I'm not sure if it's good or bad but it's definitely something. It was unexpected and that's why it's my favorite.
