this performance has been blowing up on xiaohongshu, and honestly I need to share it here. when I say the first time I watched this I SCREAMED- like sure it's inspired by yue opera, sure chen lijun is playing a man and it's desperately heterocoded as hell- but two women? singing and performing together in a somewhat romantic context? YES PLEASE.

Is fuxinbo(the one who plays lwz) married?
he sure is! to 穎兒 ying er, who's been in a bunch of costume dramas i haven't seen, and she was huo xiuxiu in the first lost tomb (2015). apparently they met doing some variety show in 2016, then were in sword of legends s2 together, also an even worse-looking drama called best arrangement, but hey, love finds a way, or something. (she was also in deep lurk with cheng yi; she works pretty steadily.)
then they had a stupidly fancy and very thoroughly photographed destination wedding in Bali, in late 2017 or early 2018 (?), right before their daughter was born. pls look how cute they are:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
apparently their daughter's nickname is little moon which produces no feelings or emotions or even reactions in me whatsoever.
Tumblr media
(wonder if tumblr will censor a visibly pregnant person. guess we'll find out!) finally, i have to include this photo because it makes me laugh every time. just don't let fei du know about it, or lwz is never beating the not-a-top allegations. wifeguy confirmed.
Tumblr media
and that's all i know about fu xinbo being married! but if you google around you can find a squillion photos of them and their kid, all being outrageously photogenic. thank you for the ask, love you madly!

Okay, let's say all Chinese censorship is over tomorrow. Which actors are first in line at the Danmei auditions the next morning?
Personally, my money's on Joseph/Shunxi Zeng, but I'd loved to hear other's thoughts.
I imagine he might run into Tian Jiarui and Hou Minghao there as well. I would say Gong Jun, but I think he's still a bit traumatized by the WOH fallout.

since checking out meet you at the blossom, it's prompted an internal dialogue about where chinese queer media is at and how I want to engage with it.
coming off the recent years of visibly queer media gaining more traction in popular culture, it can be easy to forget that queer communities in some countries - including my native country - may not enjoy the same freedom of expression for a very long time. I took a break from engaging for a while, bc I felt increasingly conflicted over consuming and enjoying it whilst authors are being arrested and actors are putting their careers at risk.
meet you at the blossom was a wonderful show, and i’m so grateful we got it. it’s a miracle it even exists. but the contrast in visibility with previous queer adaptations is stark, and i’d wager not just for budget reasons either. there were no more tv interviews, no harper’s bazaar photoshoots, no award show appearances, and the precious few fan meetings we got were all off the record. while it’s amazing that the overseas production loophole means existing content can be adapted and enjoyed, i’m reminded that the core audience and creators of the content remain under heavy censorship and oppression.
even so - or maybe because of that - chinese fans are carrying on as usual, some to a degree that surprised me. after checking out some of the content on chinese social media (dw not weibo, I don't hate myself that much) I felt like I must be missing a piece of the puzzle. some of the behavior at events held in the mainland - fans demanding them to kiss, to hold hands, to sit on each other, bringing up kiss scenes when asked about unrelated topics, bringing marriage certificate photo banners and telling them to register a marriage in thailand whilst promoting (yes this is a real thing that happened) - seems downright dangerous given the political climate in china. idk how normal all this is in thai BL-land, but it was pretty uncomfortable for a person not used to that degree of parasocial interaction. and this is coming from a kpop fan.
on a different note, it was sweet and also pretty sad seeing chinese fans gobsmacked at visible queer representation on their home turf. I learned a new phrase - 内娱, short for 国内娱乐 - meaning ‘domestic entertainment’. there were many people inquiring if the show really was 内娱, and existing fans explaining how the production came to exist as a queer 内娱 show and confirming that yes, the actors were actually chinese. one comment on a fanmeet video said ‘it’s so nice being able to understand what they’re saying🥹’, which broke my heart a little. the demand for queer content is certainly alive and well in china, and thai BL actors regularly hold activities there (even if one pair had to take separate flights in bc it was apparently too gay for them to fly together!?), but it really hits different when the language and culture are your own.
at this point, i'm not really sure how i'm going to engage with it all going forwards. I really want to participate, even if just for my own personal gratification of seeing queer representation in my native culture, but that feels selfish somehow. I want more insight into chinese queer fandom spaces, yet i'm not sure how to do that whilst preserving my sanity. it's an ongoing conversation with me and myself, and I don't have an answer yet.

Charlotte Stevens on Bluesky (‪@charstevens.bsky.social‬) is looking for cdrama/movie watchers to complete a survey! (Shared here with permission.)
Do you watch Chinese TV? Do you use English subs, and/or use English to discuss what you're watching? If so, please fill out my research survey for a pilot study: forms.office.com/e/rCzcDEwJ4s ~10min to complete (+/- free text answers 😅) Project details in form Pls share/repost! 💚🙏 I'm as happy to hear from folks who watched an episode or two of a cdrama and bounced, as I am to hear from people who are neck-deep in c-ent fandom. It's a small initial bit of research, to help me work out whether this project has legs, so any bit of data will be useful!

I know we have reasons to dislike/disregard Douban, but it still makes me happy to see WM doing well there! (Yes, I am going to write a post about some of its musical qualities. It's so good.)
