Authors for X-Men Remix Madness 2022 have been revealed! A great big thank you to everyone who participated the challenge this year; your support is greatly appreciated!

A reminder that you have the option to post-date your fic/art now that reveals have gone live (i.e. change the post-date to today vs. when it was originally posted) so more people can see your work. :D

You are welcome to post works to the Madness Collection for the balance of the day as we will not close the Challenge officially until midnight (June 30 EST) tonight! Thank you!

Note re: post-dating your fic/art:

As a general reminder, it is perfectly acceptable and even encouraged for you to post-date your fic/art. Post-dating means that you edit your work to give it today’s date instead of the earlier date it was posted. This allows more people to see your work during the anon period, versus few people outside of the exchange seeing it if it’s buried further back in the tag. All we ask is that you limit post-dating to once during the anon period and once afterward after reveals, so that you are not constantly leapfrogging over the other participants…so if you have not already post-dated, that is an option that is available to you. :)

I’ve created a photo manip for cover art as a part of a remix but I’ve only just noticed that the author said no to remixes of collaborations!🤦‍♀️ I have already almost finished it… Am I able to reach out to the authors to check that an art remix for a collab would be okay? Also, what is the best way to post an art remix? Can I post on tumblr and link to it directly somehow?

I can reach out to the author and ask no worries. Let me know who you claimed (and the fic so they can make the call) and I'll contact them ASAP. You should be able to post the art directly on ao3 the way you would if you were filling it with a fic. We don't want it posted on tumblr for now as authors/artists are not revealed until the very end of the Fest. (Once the fest is finished you are absolutely welcome to post it in as many places as you wish :D).

Hello! Can you remix a work that was prompted for another event? Thanks.

Yes you can. It doesn't matter if the original author wrote the fic for another Fest/Exchange, you can still remix it as long as it's not a designated safe work, or belongs in another category where they've indicated 'no' in their sign up (i.e. they don't want anyone remixing a certain WIP). :D

so do remixes essentially mean spin-offs of the original work, as long as they follow the same basic plot + pairing? (like maybe a backstory to one of the events that took place in the story, etc.?)

Yes you can write a backstory, or a missing scene, or a flash forward, or focus the story on a side pairing - it’s all permitted. But you are also not restricted to just building off the original story; you can completely rewrite the story itself, but with a different spin. 

For example, if I wrote a canon compliant-ish story about Logan meeting Charles and falling in love after Charles rescues him from Stryker, you could remix it by setting it in space, and giving the characters different occupations / motivations / backgrounds. Just as long as you don’t replace one or both of those characters, and you keep the basic thrust of the plot you’re good to go :D

Hi! I was wondering if it was possible to participate in X-Men Remix Madness but have my fic be anonymous even after the author reveals on June 30?

Hi Anon - I do apologize as I only just got your ask! Unfortunately I've already revealed authors/artists for the Collection and anything you post now will automatically be revealed.

Going forward I absolutely can keep works Anon I just need to know well ahead of the Close date! I would encourage you to post your fill under the Anonymous Collection and then reference Xmen Remix Madness so we don't miss out on your hard work! Thank you!

hi! i was the anon that asked about remixing authors' works outside of remix challenges — and i meant is it okay if we remix the works even when the xmen remix fest isn't going on? like as long as we don't touch the safe works, can we remix a fic, say, in december because we didn't really get enough time in may/june?

Hi Anon!

You can only remix fics during the Fest, as the people who have signed up has given permission for others to do so for this particular event by signing up. If you wish to remix anyone's work outside the specified timeframe of the fest than you will need to contact the author directly and get their permission. Hope this clarifies things thanks!

Hello! I'm thinking of remixing a work that is a genderswap fic with very low word count and not a big plot. Is it ok if I just take the basic idea of the genderswap and create a story from that as a remix or no? Thank you :)

It's absolutely fine to build out a longer fic with more plot but there should have some connective tissue to the original story beyond the genderswap; otherwise it's a brand new story and not really a remix? It's hard to say for sure without knowing exactly what the fic is and what you want to do with it...if you want to send an ask off Anon with more details I'd be happy to reply to you directly! Hope this helps!

So when do we get our assignments or do we have to choose our authors to remix?

There are no assignments for Remix Madness - it is a free for all where you select the authors you want to remix (from those who have signed up for the challenge), then 'claim' their prompt and post your work in response.

There are no limits to how many authors you remix, and you can remix as many of an author's work as you want so long as you meet the criteria outlined (i.e. no safe works etc.)
