controversial take: if Serena was given good character writing like all of Ash's other companions, I guarantee she would already be at the top of the world

And it makes me so angry that she wasn't

bc it's not even her in general that makes me so mad, it's her lazy character writing. She had so much potential to be a total badass but her entire personality was focused around Ash.

Pokemon is known to favor male characters more than female ones. But even with Dawn and Misty, those two have a personality outside what they're good at and they know they're top shelf ladies.

Like- almost all of Ash's previous lady travel companions, know their worth and they act accordingly; as they should, they're confident and independent ladies.

But Serena doesn't. She has two top-tier fighting types and a pokémon that is literally known to strangle it's prey to death. And she still thinks she needs to be saved by a man. Despite already proving that she knows how to handle herself in a pokemon battle

She's a good baker, a fantastic performer, strong- like, this girl used to ride rhinos- and overall she's an extremely empathetic and caring person; but loving Ash was made her entire schtick

and none of her good qualities {like her willpower} are never expanded on, she never grows any substantial amount.

Serena, if she had been allowed to develop like everyone else, would have absolutely outshined any other lady character Ash has traveled with with her varied skill set
