Principle Study 🎻
This week, we've looked at the music from the Romantic period which inspired modern day music especially in film and animation music.
Cues Also sprach Zarathustra
Strauss' and Wagner's epic sounding pieces are one of a kind. They are simply amazing. They capture the essence of literary ideas and translate them into thematic lines, using compositional devices to accentuate the narrative with emphasis on grand arrangements.

Cues Ein Heldenleben (i mean "Hell-denleben")
The million dollar question is now: How am I going to compose works that sounds as GRAND as Strauss' and Wagner's pieces? (Without the use of drugs of course, say no to drugs!!)
Throw back to my Y2S2 wind quintet composition. I was given feedback that my music can be developed more in terms of expansion and drive. I have many ideas but I don't develop them well enough. Comparing my pieces to Strauss and Wagner, I'd say that I'm lacking in the dramatic field, always keeping it safe and afraid of repetition.
A step that I can take to further expand my compositions might just be as simple as exaggeration. I mean, appropriate exaggeration. Not just any kind of exaggeration. For example, creating huge contrasts dynamically and "timbre-ly". If it calls for piano, make it pianississimo. If forte, make it fortississimo.

We looked at Paul Hindemith's and ___ works, and found out that there are so many nuances and details put into bringing out different effects. Particularly, I liked the idea of using woven lines sandwich in between a melodic line and harmonies, acting like a pad.

Though, big is not always better. Implementing careful designs in the SOUND is most important in recreating narrative through music. Varying string sizes and the intention behind the playing gives different feels. Before I get excited to use every single string technique into my works, I'll sit myself down to brainstorm on the concept and ideas, what keywords to emphasize, what colour to paint on the music; plan harmonically and melodically and thematically dramatic.

3rd pic together! (Next week will be Belinda's turn to take!!)

AY2020/2021 Y2S2 Module Reviews
Another covid sem all over again. Motivation has been at my all time low at this point.
Overview
CS2040 Data Structures and Algorithms
BT3102 Computational Methods for Business Analytics
GET1022 Understanding Your Brain
IS2101 Business and Technical Communication
PLS8002 Cultivating the Self
PLS8005 Elevating Interpersonal Communication
CFG1002 Career Catalyst
CS2040 Data Structures and Algorithms
Lecturer: Prof. Chong Ket Fah
Weightages
Tutorial attendance/ participation - 3%
Lab attendance - 2%
In-lab assignments -15%
Take home assignments (4) - 12%
Online quiz (2) - 8%
Midterm - 40%
Finals - 40%
Assessments are all open-book but not open-internet, meaning we can refer to our notes offline pdf and onenote etc. Content wise not as demanding as CS2030 man that was disastrous. And the practical part of this module wasnt as rigorous as CS2030, however it is understanding the algorithms and complexity thinking the most efficient solution to solve a problem that was thoroughly tested here in this mod and also the most trying portion. Having the 4 THA spread out across the semester was a nice refreshing move from the one-shot project, split into two parts the other having to completely revamp the original solution over in CS2030. However the THA are pretty challenging as well, two weeks is definitely needed per THA. Each THA consists of 2 problems to be done on Kattis. One day lab assignments are also done on Kattis and are not as challenging as THAs unsurprisingly given the deadlines allocated for us to finish it. Lab TAs also go through some hints that will guide you along whereas THA tips are not very helpful.. Really helps to be diligent and not wait till the last minute to digest the content for this. However I’ve many other commitments like Hackathons etc so I didnt have much time to focus on CS despite the pressing need to... My grades.....
Median for midterms was around 55ish and i got a 30 which is probably the bottom 20%. I hope I can make it fine this time Sobs... Didnt have time to finish all the questions in finals and I didn’t get full marks for the online quiz which everyone would get full marks for. Man...
Expected grade: B- (PLS i just need to pass grades are out tomorrow i will cry)
BT3102 Computational Methods in Business Analytics
Lecturer: Prof. Chen Nan
Weightages
Problem sets (30%)
Individual performance (10%)
Midterm (20%)
Finals (40%)
I believe is a step-up from BT2101? As much as the professor forewarn us about how the learning curve will be steep and content is hard to grasp and stuff (I was worried for myself honestly), it wasnt that bad?? Apparently the previous semesters was a lot harder, about 6/7 projects while us had only 3?? And the content for theirs, I doubt I would have lived to tell the tale sadly... I love Chen Nan he has a very happy go lucky relaxed and easy to approach vibe and the TAs too did a very good job Yuting, Yiming, Xudong in teaching the content material. Especially Yuting her tutorials are the best, easiest to digest and I grasp the idea so quickly!! Her notes are also so concise and straight forward. Chen Nan’s slides are simpler than I’ve ever been used to among all the BT mods I’ve ever taken. He drills the basics and makes sure our fundamentals are built well in the way he tests in our exams.. Really just stripped BT down to its core and emphasises on the crux of it all. I love this module and the profs so much. We get to learn a bunch of skills such as pricings and dynamic programming in terms of stockpiling what we should do when faced with many objective functions etc. And just drilled OLS such that we understand its assumptions and the implications it bring about in terms of causal inferences and identification and its interpretation. No words can describe how thankful I am to the teaching team. Thank you, this is the most elegantly put together BT mod I dare say.
Midterm and finals are open internet as the prof isn’t a fan of rote learning type of teaching that emphasises on memorising and regurgitation much like our education system has instilled in us since young (I support this). All are MCQs and theres a field where you can include your explanations to prevent cheating in case of suspicions. Both midterms and finals was held on Luminus Quiz purely online module, and the TAs have very flexible timing, all over the week. 3 types of tutorials: teaching tutorial (most important), pre-recorded (summary), and Q&A just a consultation slot to clarify your doubts. All lectures and tutorials are recorded and uploaded for us to catch up to anytime.
IS2101 Business and Technical Communication
What else can I say but A COMPLETE WASTE OF MY TIME!!!!!!!
This is a damn waste of time, does little to help us much in this area? Yes it is not easy to teach an abstract subject like communication but I really walked out of this module feeling like I did so much work only to get nothing out of it. Business correspondence ta like to talk about our lack of audience-centricness when addressing our staffs in times of covid (context of the question) I took every effort to address that and still got a shitty grade despite the feedback frmo TA having no mention about lack of audience centric ness... Like what the hell its what you emphasised previous sem and again now, so I took care to avoid tht and still got a 60 just like everyone else with audience centric problems. Feels like they just give 60 to everyone without reading lmao. IDC anymore. It was irritating enough that we had to have so many presentations I mean great does help to train us well in public speaking.. Thank god they have not resumed physical classes I literally will not be able to do it. Last sem they had to go back for 3 sessions and this sem surprisingly just 1 session for consultations about our proposal.. God bless I am OUT.

GET1022 Understanding Your Brain
Lecturer: Andrew Tan, Eyleen Goh, Wong Boon Seng
Weightages
Midterms 40%
Finals 60%
Its all about brains.
Midterms was online open book and content was up to where Andrew has left. Finals tests us from Eyleen onwards, guest lectures are not tested but aids in our understanding from what the profs said. Finals closed-book no cheatsheets and physical face to face written OAS exam with 2 short questions. Mind you, they said short. HA!! They had 5 long questions waiting for us. Full pages long each question, each about 3-4m ish. Really just pray what you have studied is what they will ultimately test you lmao. Panicked and mind blanked when they talked about basal ganglia. Couldnt for the life recall what the heck it does... and so there goes my GE..... my free mod to pull up my GPA.... sayonara~
Really need to spend time memorising for finals no way out cos no cheatsheet nothing.. But i bailed out after BT finals and relaxed on youtube instead of cramming for GET... Regrets??
PLS8002 Cultivating the Self
Psych module about being happy in the second half, cant remember what the first half was on. All we needed to watch the 2 prerecorded lectures (recorded in previous sems) and for tutorials show up and pass the Kahoot Quizzes in class and you get your marks. We were needed to prepare a small slides 2 pages about our favourite thing?? or somehting we are grateful for cant remember but I talked about genshin impact and its impact on my life lmao. Everyone had cheesy slides about their friends, family, or pets and here I am.
PLS8005 Elevating Interpersonal Communication
TA was Joanne and its quite a nothing module. Little to no workload besides the reflection to be done and uploaded one week after the seminar style tutorial (Zoom). Theres only 3 classes and you can choose to have them before or after the reading week, in alternate weeks i.e. odd or even weeks.
CFG1002 Career Catalyst
Weightage:
TalentConnect Profile
I cant rmb this one...
VMock Resume
Again a very nothing module, except it provides excellent resources on refining and marketing yourself as a potential employee. Really good tips you cant find as well, the staffs are willing to sit you down to go through your resumes and CV letters with you as well though I have yet to go for a consultation slot to discuss mine.. Might be why i still have yet to secure an internship yet.

twenty-four
So it’s currently 2am and my 24th birthday has officially ended. Can you believe it’s already May and my Y2S2 ended as well? It’s been a really really crazy year. I can’t seems to put thoughts into words nowadays simply because I don't want any thoughts in my mind. CB period has been really tough and I have no idea what I was doing to get me through every single day. On hind side, I am really digging into getting to know myself better and CB has given me so much stupid time to do that. Honestly, my mind is pretty blank and I tried.
& here I am breaking my promise of updating my actual situation. I will do it soon, I promised.

hi carol! i’m currently studying engineering in uni which i’m not the happiest in & even my gpa is showing it ㅠㅠ i feel sad just thinking about continuing this route of study & eventually working in the related field. i have thoughts of transferring to a totally diff course - sociology, as it was my interest but i’m alrdy into my y2s2 of uni 😩 i’m really conflicted & fearful of the chance that my decision isn’t right, but i just feel stuck in this course and sad :-( do you have any advice?
from your overall message it seems quite clear to me that you’re not happy in your current field (as you said you feel stuck and sad in engineering) - even if you’re unsure of the field you want to switch into, surely any change would be better than staying in the degree that you know for sure that isn’t the right one for you and makes you sad? yes it’s a difficult choice to make but i think that if you know you’re not happy with your present situation, then making the decision to stop and change that is the best choice you can make. anything that you choose that could potentially make your life easier + happier is a right choice. this is just my opinion though so whatever you choose to do, make sure it’s the right choice for you and it makes you happy

Week 4: Making Anthropology Better
In week 4, we identified areas of improvement for Anthropology and we broke them down into 2 sections.
1. Playing of melody in speed
2. Improvising with Jazz Idioms and the use of guide tones
I had practiced the melody for as many times as possible with the record and also played the melody with just the backing track. This has helped me memorise the repertoire. I am still working on the memory component of this piece.
Following issues were spotted when improvising:
- High notes were not clear on the flute
- I lack the dexterity on the flute
- I do not improvise with available Jazz idioms and I need to understand the concept of guiding tones with respect to the prevailing chord changes which is rhythm changes in this case.
My performance of the song can be seen in the video (google drive link) below taken in week 4.
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/19ECJ1bjpwrRwhfRgkrV-3whbqxrgifVb?usp=sharing
We also had spoken about existing chord analysis method for my dissertation preparation. Rit recommended Schillinger Theory and the Chord Scale Theory.
- I had researched on those harmonic analysis and were immensely helpful with my literature review for my dissertation.
We had also discussed on having me to revise the songs I had performed over the past 2 years. I have started on collecting the catalogue and will start organising them into forScore and the Spotify links to the songs are located in the links below.

Studio considerations
Reflecting on September seminar critiques and other contextual developments, I am beginning to work on my final paintings toward end of year.
There were a few practical decisions for this work. I had to decide which elements of the canvas to do myself, and which to outsource: priming, cutting wood for bars, assembling bars, stretching the canvas, or a combination of these things.
Within the scale I wanted, I was losing hope on affording two canvases in any capacity, especially as I realised how difficult it would be to stretch myself, but thank goodness I have sorted getting them made.
With the canvas juust fitting in my studio, I'm going to paint the first thin layers, then roll off and deliver to canvas guy in two weeks, which I will then pick up stretched two weeks after that, which I am timing to deliver straight to DEMO (in my friend's large van) so that I can spread them out and paint the finishing touches properly.
These two paintings will be installed on the symmetrical walls, and I'm hoping to make a third for the opposing wall but I'm going to decide closer to the day.
Opposite wall:
Painting-wise, the key things that came up in my September crits that I am keeping in mind are:
The saturated colour palette would work stronger with lesser distribution. It was a bit over-done in these works.
Particularly the neon yellows and greens have a chemical appeal to them, which creates an interesting balance within the work but needs to be done carefully. Purples maybe not so successful - makes it too tropical
The large unfinished work had success because of the freshness/spontaneity; the smaller paintings are over-worked such as moments of over-blending.
Similarly, I need to 'stop' more and give the painting moments to breath, where the viewer can enter the work easier and have more depth to the layering rather than all-over
Brown tones are a great way to 'ground' the work to Aotearoa. The uku/whenua association works well, and it steps outside of the obvious 'green' mode than may automatically represent this. Specific different tones of brown work well, with purple red undertones or visible other colours that are just a step away from being muddy.
I need to be careful about repetitive gestures, try changing my approach to the brushmark to better capture specific foliage, particularly with the thick areas.
I'm considering this feedback in my new paintings, I'm starting on the smaller pieces of canvas before beginning the large ones.

Apologies + Explaining my Course Structure
Hey guys! I'm so sorry I spent soo much time without coming here and posting! I got really lazy past semester and didn't study at all, and then I was on vacations...
But now the semester has begun (actually it's in the middle of it and I'm having my exams) and I'm having trouble getting focused and getting stuff done, so I just though about coming back here and holding accountable, maybe that helps too.
So, I'm on my third semester on pharmaceutical science major, and just so you guys can keep track of it I'm gonna explain the former year and this one.
My course is structured like (Year x Semester y) and has five years and I have to finish all the classes before Y5S2, cause that semester is only for internship. The classes can only be taken at the same semester (1st or 2nd).
So last year I had Y1S1 and Y1S2, and this year I'm having Y2S1 AND Y2S2. I usually have 5 to 6 classes each semester, but since last semester I only passed 2 (and failed 4), during Y2S2 I'll gonna be doing 8 classes, and leaving one from Y2S2 to next year (Y3S2).
I'm at Y2S1, and I currently have 5 classes:
Fundamentals of medical microbiology
Organic Chemistry 2
Biochemistry 2
Probability and statistics
Analitycal chemistry

Learning
2 years in uni flew by so fast. Some parts of me have changed and grown but some parts still distinctively the same, not sure if for the better or for worse.
As the road towards adulthood is increasingly near, I’m having mixed feelings going about my day-to-day. The escalator called school is gonna end soon, and here comes another level in life that I’d have to learn to survive in. Will I like it? Will too many things change? Only 2 years left before it arrives but I’m not emotionally ready.
Internship is starting soon in the midst of May, and I’m both fearful and excited. Fearful because I know that I’m going to be pretty burdensome to my supervisors in terms of my lack of experience (and I’m not being humble pie, I really am going to be a burden, just hoping that I’d pick up on things fast enough to not be too much of a nuisance) yet excited because it’s the first time a company has wowed me with its culture/people and my path to it was filled with serendipity. It’s almost as if the path was destined and showed its way to me in the most randomest way when I was feeling so lost. Who knew my Netflix trial subscription would pay off in an interview? Feels too good to be true.
But yeah, one thing always rings constant throughout life eh? Learning. It makes me wonder just how much can my mind take before really calling it quits learning new things. Like y’know, mind goes on strike? xD
Finals had just concluded and I had a great Y2S2 with one of the chillest workloads ever (I hope my GPA doesn’t reflect my lack of effort this sem HAHA). I focused more on exploring careers this semester than on school, after a realisation that all I’d gain from the uni education is really just soft skills and friends. I withdrew myself to bare (but still responsible) minimum in terms of all school-related commitments to find myself and it was pretty successful. And this was definitely made possible because of my lovely friends supporting me through both the acads and daily life (special shout out to my Y1 stats class friends, that mod turned out to be life-changing for me in uni socially HAHA :’)) and my amazing friends from last summer that I hold dear in scary smoosmoo land. As well as, my old and gold cedar friends who’re as comforting as chicken soup to my lil’ soul. *takes blanket to snuggle*
I am a better me, for all of you had believed in me even earlier than I could and supported me in all ur different, unique ways.

Planning toward end of year

I made a calender dating between now and hand-in (November 21st)
Some things listed include:
- Sourcing large scale stretcher bars and getting the canvases prepped and made
- Writing essay and publishing catalogue
-Artist statement 3x drafts with Glen
-Titles (and overall project title)
-Organising painting transport

I decided between two exhibition spaces, I chose option 1 because I will possibly just install two large paintings and the angled walls will work great

The paintings themselves need to be confident, and comprise of all the ideas from my MFA while considering specific feedback from recent crits. I will specify this in another post
