Mezzo and the Crystal Shards Part 6-4: Miracle Matter

Kirby's traveled quite a long way, and here he is at last. It's time to confront the source of darkness and save Ripple Star.

Unlike previous boss fights, I won't be bringing in an ability from another stage. The reason why will soon become apparent.

This ioscahedral foe starts the fight by sitting in midair. It's invincible to all attacks.

It shifts into different forms to attack. There are seven total forms, one for each of the base copy abilities. Each can only be damaged by its own ability, which you can pick up from it. It's technically possible to get any combo here, but that's not exactly easy, or helpful, since it can only attack at most two out of seven.

Needle form will attack by extending spikes. These are easy to avoid once you know the pattern. The tips left behind can be inhaled to grant Needle.

Bomb form doesn't have any explosions, but will instead send these bubbles bouncing around. What does this have to do with bombs? Your guess is as good as mine.

You can destroy them with a copy ability, but that leaves you nothing to attack with. They will eventually split, then decay into these black dots that grant Bomb.

Electric form fires lasers that wrap around the screen and ricochet against the boss's body.

They eventually shorten in length until they become sparks that grant Electric. This is one of the more difficult forms, since you have to hold out a bit before you can attack, and these are easy to lose track of.

Ice form is an ice cube surrounded by triangles that grant Ice. It's easy to inhale one, but tough to build a combo with.

Fire form extends pillars of flame above and below, to its sides, or both at once. When they recede they leave behind embers that grant Fire.

Yaaay. Yeah, this is gonna happen a lot.

After a form takes 3 hits, it stops using that one. We need to destroy every form to win, so this thing has a total of 21 hit points. That's ridiculously high compared to every other boss in this game.

Cutter form just flies around in circles. The small cutter following behind can grant Cutter. Eventually it will cut through the ground once, then return to the base position and shift to another form.

Stone form will drop four boulders on the ground, then fall next to them and roll side to side. This is surprisingly difficult to dodge, especially if you're using most Stone abilities.

And I died again. Time to give this another shot.

Welp, that's it. RIP Kirby. The game's over.

I jest, of course. It just means we can try again from the start of the level, which we were doing anyway since this is a boss. This time around I managed to nab fridge Kirby for a quick health recharge.

As it continues to take damage, the base form loses eyes.

Nearly got it now. Let's just use dynamite to deal the finishing blow.

Okay, now I just feel like I'm being punished for my hubris.

After many retries, I eventually got it down on my eighth attempt.

Good riddance.

Okay... I'm pretty sure the end credits are not supposed to look like that. Must be another glitch with the emulator Perfectly Legal and Real Nintendo 64 Game System By Nintendo Ltd.

Titanic Fail Part 1

I have the weirdest conversations with people after 2 in the morning.  My insomnia kicks into overdrive and I tend to find myself on the weird side of YouTube and then sharing whatever abomination I happen to come across with whatever unfortunate soul is also awake.  Trauma tastes better when it’s shared.

Last night I came across a cartoon music video that featured a dancing shark that claimed to be from an animated movie called “The Search for Titanic”.  I made the mistake of clicking on it, because my curiosity is going to get me killed some day. I also found the Nostalgia Critic review of said animated movie and heeeey, it’s the sequel of another animated movie about the Titanic that I had already seen but had blocked from my memory!  I spent the next 90 odd minutes of my life checking out the sequel and then promptly shared my findings with a fellow nightowl.  I’m going to share that conversation in a second post because I need to tell about the first movie or the sequel won’t make any sense.  Not that it made sense to begin with, but I’m particular about continuity.  (The movie doesn’t know what that is, but I’ll get to that.)

Here’s the condensed version of the conversation we had about the first movie, edited to story format..

I was browsing YouTube and found this movie about the Titanic made for kids.  It didn’t look like the one that the NC reviewed so I decided to investigate.  It’s actually a different one. Oh boy is it special.  Special.  Special.  It’s about this chick named Elizabeth and her parents who are trying to make her marry this whaler villain and she doesn’t want to but doesn’t have a choice because Daddy knows what’s best for her.  Yaaay sexism!.  Evil whaler dude only wants her for daddy’s money anyway.  It’s the first of several plots.  Cameron took three hours to film ONE storyline, but this one crams three equally convoluted stories into 90 minutes, presumably to make it more interesting for toddlers with raging ADD.

The movie opens with a sailor mouse telling his grandmice about how everything they learned about the Titanic disaster is conspiracy-theory propaganda and he’ll tell the REAL story where nobody actually dies, even when they do.  then it cuts to the the harbor where the rest of the cast has been hanging out and we get to meet Elizabeth, an unhappy blonde, and her father and stepmother.In addition to Liz and company there’s also a stray dog, talking immigrant mice, the evil whaler dude and his sidekick, and some guy in a tuxedo and opera cape combo, sporting a mullet.  He’s the good guy.  He’s got five different names and is supposedly a gypsy prince*. After catching sight of Elizabeth for less than three seconds, he decides he’s in love with her and steals her glove. He smiles somewhat creepily and then starts sniffing the thing.  Judging by his total lack of a personality, that’s probably not the only thing he sniffs.  The entire production crew was sniffing spray paint when they were writing this.

The talking mice spend the next twenty minutes of the movie taking a roll call and talking about ship protocol. I mean that’s what you look for in a show about Titanic.  Talking mice in little sailor outfits.  One of the mice catches sight of Elizabeth for less than three seconds and decides he’s in love with her too, despite her being a human woman.  When another talking mouse asks why he’s in lust with a human and he replies that if there’s one thing he’s not, it’s a racist!**Okay.  He’s not a racist but he called a guy a gypsy four minutes ago. Evil whaler dude and his minion explain to the audience that he needs to marry Elizabeth to get his hands on the money he needs to fund his illegal whaling operation.  Why, you ask, does a Titanic movie need a Greenpeace subplot?  Because the movie was written by paint-sniffing social justice monkeys, that’s why. Gawd.

He turns out to be in league with Elizabeth’s stepmother who wants a cut of the profits.After the stepmother berates Elizabeth for expressing her desire NOT to marry the guy, she runs out onto the deck of the ship and cries a single sparkle tear that hits a dolphin on the head and explodes into glitter. The dolphins practice voodoo and can levitate themselves right up a 5 story boat and talk to Elizabeth, who understands their language now.  The Voodoo Dolphin explains that she can talk to them because her tear hit a net of magic moonbeams and cast a spell on her.  They explain that they’re on a mission to save the whales, and the script goes downhill from there. Elizabeth can also talk to the mice, and they tell her that marrying evil whaler dude is a seriously bad idea and she agrees and goes to tell her father.  Her father must have gotten a concussion somewhere off-screen, because he has a completely different personality and tells her he would never force her to do something she didn’t want to do when not 30 minutes ago he told her she had an obligation to do so.

Meanwhile, Mullet Head Phantom of the Opera has been standing on deck, gazing mindlessly into the sunset, still snorking on Elizabeth’s glove. This is now a fetish film.  The mice discover evil whaler dude’s scheme and stage a guerilla war against them, and learn that evil whaler is going to telegram his evil whaler buddies, so off they go to sabotage the telegraph machine and chew through the cord to save the poor whales.. And then it gets progressively bizarre. 

The evil whaler dude has some shark buddies from the New Jersey Mafia, wearing prison uniforms.  Evil whaler dude tells them not to sink the ship until after he’s sent out that telegram to his other buddies.  When he hears the wedding is off, he makes the brilliant decision to tie Elizabeth’s father to a chair and force him to sign the paperworkl. (I’m guessing he got his magic glitter tear somewhere else because he can talk to the freaking sharks. Yeah forget the iceberg, it was talking sharks that sank the ship the whole time.  Here’s an actual line of dialogue:  “After we’ve arranged for the iceberg to appear in front of the ship, we’ll grab the rudder in our teeth and hold it on course!”

Mullet Head Phantom of the Opera runs into Elizabeth up on deck.  They exchange a grand total of seven words with each other and Elizabeth is in love too.  They dance blissfully with each other, completely oblivious to the impending catastrophe.  Evil whaler dude tells the Jersey Mafia to take the ship down and escapes on a motor dingey with Elizabeth’s mother.  The sharks convince a GIANT PINK TESTICLE NAMED TENTACLES that I guess is supposed to be the kraken to play “iceberg thowing” with them and Testicle Face thinks this is the greatest idea like, ever, and throws an iceberg at the ship. I swear to god I am not making that up. 

Voodoo Dolphin scolds him for not noticing a hugeass ship with 2000 people on it.  She has a point.  But then she goes on to say that they’ll have to save as many as possible.  There’s a completely pointless scene where the mice realize that by chewing through the telegraph cord, the ship can’t radio for help.  A fat old mouse sacrifices himself by hooking the wires together with his mustache.

The ship starts to sink and Testicle Face proceeds to grab it and hold it back together.  The ship starts to sink and Testicle Face proceeds to grab it and hold it back together. Most of the passengers make it onto the lifeboats because in THIS version of the disaster, there’s room for EVERYONE. Elizabeth’s father makes it safely onto the lifeboat as Elizabeth and Mullet-Head go running off. (Why?  Just get in the goddamn boat.)  Then the whales show up and rescue the rest of the people still on board.Testicle Face can’t hold the ship up any longer and goes down with it, dying a hero. 

Elizabeth and Mullet Head arrive in New York....somehow...and get married. They’re standing on a bridge with a crowd, taking a moment of silence to remember all the people who couldn’t get a space on the lifeboats despite what the crew said about there being enough room for everyone. (this movie has serious continuity issues) when the whales swim in carrying the rest of the passengers and even the mouse who fried himself is all better now, along with Testicle Face.  Nobody died, everybody’s okay and the movie has a happy ending!  Hooray!This movie gave me a headache.

Just when you think you have heard it all, you are presented with a crossover of jazz acoustic drums resonating to the time signature of bebop while keeping up with the Fuji snare press roles. Wow! Creating an exotica ambience of pads tinkling to make the music sail smoothly. To ease the tension globally, so that people can calm down, we have to intentionally show kindness to one another, to make it a culture via every means that is available to us, and to sensitize young people to diligence and hard work which has a better result than the get rich quick syndrome.
