Oh lord, found out I need yaktrax for my Kaaterskills Falls hike in New York upstate during this time of year, otherwise I might fall into some slippery ravine 🥲👟

Why are they broke?
Pim- addicted to saying my treat when the check comes, will not accept venmos later. Loves stupid desk toys and organization tools with literally no use (his entire kitchen is those skinny letter rae dunn containers) .
Charlie- 3 am go puff/door dash orders, has to buy new games right when they come out
Alan- invests way too much into hobbies thinking they're his new thing (has camel backpack and yaktrax after going on a hike last summer and an aerodynamic cycling leotard from when he got really into riding his bike for a while), splurges on stupidly high quality coffee so he can drink it black and feel refined instead of just miserable
Glep-way too many subscriptions services, will buy the movie right when it hits Amazon instead of waiting a couple months for it to be on Hulu or Netflix. Backs a lot of wacky Kickstarters.

Power came back two hours ago while I was sleeping!
Considering many places are still without power in our area and were before us, I'm not complaining.
Gino is back in his cage and is very happy. The house is still warming up but it's not bitterly cold anymore.
Matilda's dad braved the ice of our neighborhood - the roads outside are clear but our neighborhood is an ice rink. He parked by the entrance, strapped on some yaktrax and walked the rest of the way in with a wagon.
He brought some propane and bread and milk and a solar powered battery bank in case the power didn't come back.
He had power earlier so he braved the weather to come get the kiddo.
No telling when the ice is gonna stop but for now we're okay. 💜

Oh! I found an interesting Meetup and I'm going tonight. I also want to get in a run before I do that. It is freezing and I hate the cold. It is slightly icy, but not icy enough for Yaktrax.
I don't think I have seen it this consistently cold before.

At the dog park this morning I bumped in to a couple. We talked for a bit. They seemed very familiar to me. I’m kicking myself now for not asking how I might know them, because it’s really bugging me now. They didn’t act like they knew me.
He’s about 10 years older than me. She’s older but not by that much. Neither one is unusual looking, but some minor things set them apart from other people. If you saw them separately you wouldn’t likely figure them as a couple.
They were super friendly. Some folks could have even thought too friendly. They got up my personal space. I didn’t find it off-putting, probably since I was thinking I might know them. Plus I knew I could easily defeat both of them in a fist fight!!!
The packed snow in the park is slippery. The woman was interested in my very helpful Yaktrax. As she asked me where I got them she leaned into get a closer look. I could have rested my chin on her shoulder. It didn’t bother me.
When I got home I described the couple to Sheila. “Bob, start with the dog! What kind of dog did they have?” It was one of the doodle varieties. Nowadays that breed doesn’t stand out from the crowd, so that didn’t help the description.
Sheila thought the couple sounded familiar too, thought she couldn’t figure it how we might know them either.

Today's List of Nice Things:
Matt Smith's doctor is growing on me. Also, I just realized the Vincent Van Gough episode is during his first season and I am REALLY looking forward to that.
Treated myself to some pride socks and celestial tights. Local company, too.
Finally bought the Yaktrax I've been thirsting for since our last snow storm. Prooobably won't be here in time for this one. Hopefully I won't need them.
Got some writing done!
Also ordered myself a keychain for the sake of my sanity, haha.

Wow guys, thanks for all the snow advice, much appreciated!
Will definitely get sand, and putting buckets up the driveway of salt/sand is genius. Neither of our cars have all wheel drive, womp womp. I hadn’t even heard of yaktrax, smart. We have a snowblower, I just don’t know how to use it and I’m afraid it might be heavy.
All my friends have AWD here, neighbor came over today and parked in the snow that hadn’t been shoveled yet, like it was nbd. Hm. She also said she heard our car spin out several times last night, embarrassing. I need to get sand before it snows again on Friday.
I do love the snow though. I actually love everything about Massachusetts. My MA friends told me winter before snow is ugly and sad, but it’s not. The skies are grey and the trees dark and bare. It’s so beautiful in a somber way. And when it snows, it’s stunning. Watching the snow fall feels almost spiritual, it takes my breath away.
Alyssa and George were out for hours again today. I love how the three of us are entranced by the snow while Gen and Justin are No Thanks. Gen is his little clone in every way.

Actually attempted a run this morning, but it was too icy--even in my trail shoes, I was slipping a little with every step (even just walking), and I don’t have spikes or yaktrax, so I turned back after a block, and then slipped more dramatically in my parking lot and fell over. The ice is THICK and slick and solid (...I know) and it’s supposed to just get worse until Monday, as each afternoon gets a little above freezing and melts some of the snow and then it freezes into a new layer of ice at night. So the uhhhh reset or whatever this is continues

But like. I think working at the Waterstones in town would be way better than currently
I haven't worked in a bookshop before, but I imagine I'd spend far less time next to people's feet (footwear section) and far less time persuading people that no they can't climb Everest with YakTrax made for if an English pavement gets a tiny bit of ice on it, I don't care if they're cheaper, do you want to die Steve? No? Jesus fucking christ. (this is a fictional example but believe me I've had the exact sentiment of this conversation so so many fucking times)
And I might get a different type of awful boss, who knows, but at least I wouldn't have to deal with the ASM's "numbers must go up and I think the worst of literally everyone" bullshit
And I'd have to work my month's notice here, which makes me less likely to be accepted there, I'd reckon, and I won't give up my current job for a xmas temp offer, which is what I'd imagine it would probably be
But there's no harm in making up a CV, I spose, tho I'd have to start from scratch cs fuck knows what happened to the printouts from five years ago, and I don't have that laptop any more

Chicago has reached the bipolar phase of its winter where it tries to kill us all by snowing, then getting outrageously cold, then snowing again before the temperature rises to just a teensy bit above freezing, then drops again. So the streets and sidewalks are deathtraps, but the Danger Beagle laughs in the face of peril. She still wants her 6+-mile walk everyday. So I have these yaktrax things that help at least a little with not dying of the sidewalk bashing in my occipital. They are a sort of rubber frame that, in theory, stretches around the outline of the sole of one's shoe. Except my winter boots are for dudes, because I have not found a pair for women that are not absurd in prioritizing look over functionality (see above re: mandatory 6+-mile Danger Beagling daily). I bought the yaktrax for my dainty lady feet shoes, though, and my boots are, of necessity, rather too big for my feet. The result is that he yaktrax seem to want to escape. Yesterday, I lost one and the Spousal Unit graciously hunted it down. Today, I suddenly realized outside the dog park that I had lost both. I was going to write them off, but I was pretty sure it had only been a short while since I lost them. An apparent digression: Lately, I have been re-listening to all of "Sparks Nevada: Marshal on Mars" in order. I am out of the Pod F. Tompkast, Spontaneanation, Stay F. Homekins, and The Neighborhood Listen. I am out of Craig's List and Settling the Score. Danger Beagling consumes a LOT of podcasts, friends. So, Sparks it has been, and I have this to say: —Goddamn if that theme song is not a jolt of endorphins every single time —Sara Watkins' POW! is still the POW! to beat —I can't believe I'd forgotten how straight @paulftompkins plays it when he sings the theme song when the Jupiter Spy is Sparks —I can't believe I'd forgotten how he then utterly destroys MEJ when the Jupiter Spy is Croach and MEJ is just trying to get through the song. ANYHOODLES. Despite my LIMITED HUMAN SENSES, and my life-long urban dwelling, I was inspired NOT to surrender to the loss of my yaktrax, because there's crunchy, crunchy snow all over, so I was leaving two sets of footprints (no, Jesus does not come into this), and I was reasonably sure that the tall weeds (Danger Beagle loves the tall weeds—she once flushed a Bun and a Barn Cat in rapid succession and she will NEVER FORGET) immediately next to the off-leash part of the dog park was the most likely place for them to have been yanked off.
Reader, I tracked those yaktrax. Praise Nanotech.

Luscious, Brisk, Crisp, Frigid Air
My lungs were overloaded with recirculated, filtered, fossil fuel-warmed air,as I craved the slippery world through the glass. Struggled but abundantly motivated,I strapped the YakTrax over my trainers, and emerged from my 950-square-foot cocoon. Clouds formed before my nose and mouth,as I released days of air shared with family and chihuahua, before breathing in the luscious, brisk, crisp,…

I spent almost an hour before my daily walk hemming and hawing over whether to put on my new yaktrax. There's snow on the ground, but not much on the sidewalk, but enough to be slippery, but enough to justify the cleats? My brain also loves inventing consequences where none exist, so a small part of me definitely thought that I might get arrested if I get it wrong.
Then a smarter part of me pointed out that I could wear the cleats and walk in the snow. So I did, and I had a GODDAMN BLAST!
I felt like a little kid again. I was SO tempted to drop and make a snow angel, but it was 30 degrees F and I was wearing mostly cotton. When the temp drops at the end of the week and I can pull out my thermals, I think I owe it to myself to play in the snow.
If you can, go be outside and get out of your own head! The "stupid mental health walk" people are right, and even though I walk almost every day, I still needed that reminder.

Ice and Snow Cleats
Ice and Snow cleats
Navigating Winter with Confidence: The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Best Ice Cleats for Your Shoes
Introduction
Winter brings its own set of challenges, and icy sidewalks and slippery surfaces are among the most daunting. Whether you’re a seasoned winter warrior or a newcomer to the cold season, investing in the right gear can make all the difference. In this guide, we’ll explore the world of ice cleats, discuss the importance of choosing the best ones for your shoes, and provide valuable insights into keeping you steady on your feet during icy conditions.
Understanding Ice Cleats
Ice cleats, also known as traction cleats or ice grippers, are specialized devices designed to enhance traction on slippery surfaces. They consist of durable materials like rubber, metal, or a combination of both, featuring spikes or studs strategically placed on the sole to grip onto ice and snow. These innovative accessories transform ordinary shoes into winter-ready footwear, reducing the risk of slips and falls.
Key Features to Look for
When selecting the best ice cleats for your shoes, several key features should be considered. Firstly, look for adjustable and secure fastening mechanisms to ensure a snug fit on various shoe sizes. The material of the cleats is crucial; durable rubber provides flexibility and longevity, while metal spikes offer excellent traction. Consider the ease of putting them on and taking them off, especially when transitioning between indoor and outdoor spaces.

To ensure your ice cleats remain effective throughout the winter season, regularly inspect them for wear and tear. Clean them after each use to prevent ice and snow buildup. When walking on surfaces without ice, consider removing the cleats to avoid unnecessary wear. Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for usage and care to maximize the lifespan of your ice cleats.
Conclusion
Investing in the right ice cleats can turn winter strolls into a secure and confident experience. By considering the key features and exploring top picks in the market, you can find the best ice cleats for your shoes and navigate icy terrains with ease and safety. Winter adventures await — step into the season prepared and worry-free.
