Hakuoki - Record of Curious Tales: Katana and Samurai #7, Kazusa no Suke Fujiwara Kaneshige
wooooh. i swear i must have a constitution that just can't handle seasonal changes. for the last decade, i've always gotten sick/had chills/and/or a fever between winter and spring then again between spring and summer... and I do think someone I know once mentioned that I might be allergic to seasons or something like that at one point?
¯_(ツ)_/¯
well whatever. can't really do anything about that. also thank you for all the get well-wishes.
anyway the story for this was originally published in 電撃Girl’s Style 2016年5月... and I want to complain about how much research I did on the side to confirm the names of things.
Going to to try and finish the Harada one later today to make up for last week... but no promises!
Hakuoki - Record of Curious Tales: Katana and Samurai #7, Kazusa no Suke Fujiwara Kaneshige
Translation by KumoriYami
First year of Genji, summer——
During this time, the Shinsengumi experienced two major events: the Ikedaya Incident in the sixth month, and the Kinmon Incident [Hamaguri Gate Rebellion] in the month, and all of its members were extremely busy because many of them had participated in the fighting, which was why it was natural for there to be numerous deaths and injuries within the group.
During the Ikedaya Incident, Toudou Heisuke received a serious blow to his head so he was forbidden from participating in the Kinmon Incident, and instead had to recover at headquarters.
After the height of summer, Toudou's injuries finally healed, and at the same time, he was assigned a new mission: to go to Edo and recruit new team members to fill in the vacancies caused by the casualties.
There was a reason for why the Shinsengumi had been established in Kyoto but recruited its members in Edo. If the recruitment was done in Kyoto, Osaka, or some other nearby place, for the most part, the people gathered would be ronin from the western regions, and many western ronin involved in Sonnō jōi [the policy of of "Revere the Emperor, expel the barbarians"]. In contrast, in Tōgoku [東国] and Edo, there were many who were Sanbaku [supporters of the shogunate]. In fact, when the Shinsengumi previously recruited in the western provinces, there was were incidents where the recruits were undercover agents from the Choshu Domain. Additionally, Kondou and Hijikata were originally from Edo, which was within their sphere of of influence, and if they recruited people from the same town, it would be more convenient.
Due to these reasons, Toudou, who had many acquaintances in Edo, prepared to head to Edo to recruit new members there.
The first thing Toudou did after he finished recuperating was to inspect the sword he used the Ikedaya Incident. Howeer the sword, which had originally been sent for polishing, had been returned in a tattered state on the grounds that it "could not be repaired". There were eleven minor nicks in the blade while the hilt had suffered significant damage in four locations, which couldn't be repaired under any circumstances.
Toudou gazed at the scarred blade and mumbled, "If that's the case, this can no longer be used… even though it was a very good sword, it's finally time to give up on it…"
Kazusa no Suke Kaneshige measured two shaku, four sun, and two bu.
It was a katana forged by a swordsmith specially hired by the Tsu Domain (Toudou clan) in the Ise Province during the early Edo period. It was said that their father or master was Izumi no Kami Kaneshige. It was also rumoured that Izumi no Kami Kaneshige's technique influenced Kotetsu and Yamato no Kami Yasusada [name mentioned in the story about Souji's story]. It was why people naturally felt that Kazusa no Suke Kaneshige had been too. In Kokon Kajibiko [古今鍛冶備考], which evaluated the sharpness of blades, it was evaluated as a good product.
Of course, this sword was obviously not something an ordinary ronin could wear at the waist.
He had received this sword from his mother on his fifteen birthday, when he became an adult/at his adulthood ceremony.
In regards to Toudou's family, Toudou and his mother had lived together in a single-family dwelling, and although it was a ronin's household, he had never seen his mother work. Despite that, as long as they weren't too extravagant, they never ran out of money. Toudou himself was also very confused about this situation since he was young.
This questioned was answered when Toudou became an adult at fifteen and received this sword. According to his mother, Toudou's father was a prominent figure within the Tsu Domain, and their family's living expenses were all obtained from him. Because Toudou was the child of a samurai, he was sent to private schools and dojos where only the children of samurai could attend and received an education in both academics/civil and martial arts at an early age. In hindsight, it was possible that he could have been called back and given an official position somewhere.
However, the first time Toudou received a message from this prominent figure, it was for the exchange of the continued financial support and this sword, which served as a coming-of-age gift, for him to "never search for his father's whereabouts."
Afterwards, Hokushin Ittō-ryū
Toudou left the Hokushin Ittō-ryū after leaking this secret and began to associate with ruffians. He led a decadent life while not knowing how many times he thought about throwing away this sword, which was the source of his grief. However, if he really threw it away, it would be like severing the connection between himself and his father… the last thread linking him to his bloodline family. and each time he thought of that, he couldn't let it go.
It was during this time Toudou arrived at Shiekan, and while he initially thought about just taking a look, before he realized it, he had settled down there. At Shiekan, only people who loved swordmanship gathered, and even though they saw that Toudou's sword was the rumoured Kazusa no Suke Kaneshige, no one would say antyhing about it.
Even though Kazusa no Suke Kaneshige carried such a secret——
"I can finally let go… Thank you for everything up until now. Then, what kind of sword should I pick next?"
On Toudou's face, an unexpected and carefree smile appeared.
---end---
misc note: when trying to confirm Heisuke's sword's name, there's usually a "no" in it despite how it isn't there when hearing the name said out loud. I guess this is why some websites I browsed wrote it as "Kazusa (no) Suke Kaneshige" instead of "Kazusa no Suke Kaneshige." Also I sometimes saw the name with and without the "Fujiwara" and decided to omit it since the audio of the name doesn't pronounce it.

I think i should question why I am doing unnecessary research just for the sake of accuracy...? I swear it feels like doing citations for an essay each time I do one of these...
