Took my yarn on a walk today. I needed to get some swatches out of the way before attempting some socks. I really love how this yarn looks! It's so colorful. I bought this yarn a while ago, this 2024, I'd really like to knit through some of the stash 😅
*I should have added earlier, the contraption the yarn is on is a portable wrist yarn holder from this fiber shop on etsy. It's especially good for caked yarn and allows you to walk and knit. It swivels so the yarn unwinds ❤️

Found some thread that sparked joy in th darkest corner of the yarn store today. So now I can make some green and peach patches too. And that green is a pretty perfect shade for lichen.

I was talking about knitting with a crocheter and mentioned I was just starting on a new shawl because I found the perfect pattern for some hand-dyed yarn I have.
Crocheter "so you just buy yarn without knowing how you'll use it?"
Me "well, I collect a lot of vintage yarn and get a fair amount from Goodwill."
Crocheter "Goodwill has yarn?"
Me "Not if I've been there."
When she stopped laughing I had to explain where the local Goodwill puts their yarn when the put it out.
(I'm fairly certain during my last visit, yarn materialized that hadn't been there when I first looked. Like someone said - hey, that lady who buys yarn is here. Let me put out anything we have.)

Wish me luck
I'm gonna be organising and documenting my yarn stash this week. Every single ball of yarn, even the multitudes of hand dyed sock yarn. Then I can start assigning them all projects.
Every time I feel an urge to buy I will simply look at my stash list and remember I still have so much to do with what I have.

The pre-holiday yarn sales are making me crazy. I want it all! But, so far, I've been able to remind myself about the excessive stash. No purchases in weeks. Meanwhile...

time to work on WIPs. This sweet cardi has been finished for 7+ months, waiting for assembly. Did the sewing today. Pretty happy with the outcome, if not the pictures.

I'm in the process of reorganising my stash so I decided to take photos of everything, today I sorted out my 100% plant fibres. These are only yarns that aren't currently in WIPs or bagged up in project bags ready to be started, there'll be a photo of all those projects in the future.
The first photos are all from VeganYarnUK, a wonderful UK based dyer who sells all sorts of plant yarns which she hand dyes, I'm in love with her sock yarn which is organic cotton, tencel and elastic. Second photo is everything else plant fibre that's not from her store.

Major Yarn Stash Update
Greetings! On September 18th 2019 I decided that I needed to downsize my enormous yarn stash. I wish that I would have added up how many grams of yarn that I had at this point but I didn’t. However, if I remember correctly I had over 600 skeins of yarn at this point.
Tumblr media
1631 days later I have 614 grams or just over 6 skeins of yarn left. I figure that it will take me close to a month to use the remainder of this yarn in these scrappy blankets.
Tumblr media
To celebrate my successful yarn stash downsizing I took advantage of some leap day sales at Knit Picks and bought a bunch of yarn! I will share all of that yarn after it arrives.

What To Do with Leftover Luxury Yarn?
Left with really expensive knitting yarn after making a gorgeous sweater? Ideas for what to do with it, pattern included!
I don’t play yarn chicken. Life is too short for that kind of teeth grinding, blood pressure elevating stress in my life. If I’m knitting a nice sweater out of all-wool, cashmere, alpaca, or some other luxury yarn, I make sure I have enough yarn to make the best sweater I can make.  That leaves a happier problem than running out of yarn (i.e., losing at yarn chicken – frantically trying to…

Why have fairy godmothers when you can have fairy yarnmothers?
Was just gifted this pile of weird and wonderful yarn. The dark brown is a standard size ball of crochet yarn. The small yellow ball is a softer cotton yarn, but also fairly standard. The big orange skeins are like really thin crochet yarn or something. Will be a drag to wind but it's a thickness and quality of yarn that I don't already have, which is nice. The big cones are nice and shiny thin 2 ply yarn with some texture and thickness variation. Must be many hundreds of meters on each cone! Excited to make some crochet ferns with the greenish shade! Otherwise no idea what I'm gonna do with it all, but the more odd yarn I have the less restricted I feel. And the colors are really nice too, very 70s. Love those warm and usually more muted yellow/orange/green/brown shades! I often feel like I can't find the shades I want in yarn stores now, so gotta love vintage yarn.

Spent the morning "yarn flirting" on etsy before making a commitment.
There is a shop that is a small brick-and-mortar shop getting rid of some stock, generally at a heavily discounted price. I've bought a discontinued Noro from them in the past and love the yarn. They had a number of skeins of the same yarn in a different color. Noro is expensive. I really don't need this yarn.
Over a number of months, I've added this listing to my favorites. Taken it out of my favorites, re-added it. Looked at it. Researched the yarn on Ravelry. Considered projects I could make with the yarn.
This weekend, the shop sent a 20% coupon. I added the yarn to my cart and paused to look at other yarn and think about it while having another cup of tea.
They immediately sent a coupon for a 25% coupon. I can see them having tea and going "look, we know you liked the purple version. We know you want the pink. Just go for it."
I bought the yarn.

It means getting all your yarn (or other craft supplies - I mean to do the fabric later on) out, all at once, in one place, and "air it out". I think ideally you'd do this in warm dry weather, and actually take it outside to shake out & set it in the sun for a while, but it feels like a New Year activity to me, so January it is.
Once you've got it all out where you can see it, you can of course inspect for and prevent insect damage, but also really see what you've got, and make plans. What to keep, what to donate, what projects are possible with that fancy skein you forgot about, etc. I'll be trying to assign yarn to specific (or vague) projects and putting it in labeled bags for each, and thus making a plan of projects to do this year. And I'll be able to see what exactly I'm missing to be able to complete those projects, so I don't go buying yarn willy nilly.
The idea comes from Brenda Dayne of the Cast On podcast, and it's such a good one that I'm trying to do it annually.

Made these six fat chickens today to finish off an off-white skein of yarn. Now I just gotta make lil babies for them 🥰🥰
Tomorrow I’m gonna try making a few swatches to perfect a grucifix in mosaic crochet form. I REALLY wanted to finish off a few skeins today to break into my yarn stash some more, so with that goal done, I’m gonna get going on a crap ton of Ghost stuff 🤘😈
(Also I have about 20 of these chunky ladies now.)
