tiger’s eye
When she’s all by herself, little Maggie Brady pretends to be a famous actress.
In the middle of the night, after everyone else in the house has gone to bed, she turns on her little lamp and looks in the mirror. She’s ten years old in 1955, and since the death of James Dean in late September, she’s been obsessed with Hollywood; with making her mark. She puts on her mother’s lipstick (her favorite crayon; the one she still hasn’t outgrown or grown into) and pretends to drench herself in diamonds. Unfortunately, the Brady family doesn’t own anything with real diamonds, so she has to use tiger’s eye bracelets and call it a day. No matter. She’s an actress. She can make anything work.
Maggie looks in the mirror and pretends to talk to the camera. She talks all about her latest movie, which is just a remake of her favorite film, Singin’ in the Rain. She talks about how she auditioned for the role of Kathy Selden, but in the end, the director and the studio knew she’d shine as Lina Lamont. Sometimes, if she’s feeling really bold, she even does the Lina Lamont voice: An’ I caaaaan’t staaaan ‘im!
Her mother usually hears her antics, but she doesn’t usually say anything until the following morning. At breakfast, she winks at Maggie and asks when she’s going to move out to California. Maggie always tosses her hair over her shoulder and says it will be soon enough. And a part of her believes it.
A part of her believes it too much.
