Thus when the new French Republic implemented universal male suffrage, the people elected a conservative government. Shocked, the urban workers and radicals took to the streets of Paris in June but were crushed by the National Guard. While Austria invaded the new Republic from the north, the French, despite their own recent republican revolution, landed troops in the south and laid siege to Rome. Italian nationalists throughout the peninsula rallied to their cause and by the end of April all the major Italian states had joined them in the fight against Austria.
