Europe 171 years ago today: June Days (23 Jun 1848) https://buff.ly/2KxtHrU The apparent success of the European revolutions belied the divisions between the city-based reformers, who desired everything from moderate reforms to the complete overthrow of the current systems of government, and the general population, who were often traditionalists. Thus when the new French Republic implemented universal male suffrage, the people elected a conservative government. Shocked, the urban workers and radicals took to the streets of Paris in June but were crushed by the National Guard. The monarchies of Europe took note - if even France could rein in its revolutionaries, so could they. #europe #history #welovehistory #welovemaps #map #1840s #19thcentury #victorianera #victorian #1848 #austrianempire #europeanhistory #frenchhistory #germanconfederation #yearofrevolutions #june #june23 #russianempire #ottomanempire #yearrevolutions #maps #todayinhistory #historytoday #historyteacher #historybuff #historygeek #historynerd #worldhistory #cartography #geopolitics (at Paris, France) https://www.instagram.com/p/BzCmPQAAF4m/?igshid=7fbi1h2n5zkb

Europe 170 years ago today: Fall of the Last Roman Republic (03 Jul 1849) https://buff.ly/2XlZcfn The formation of the new Roman Republic and expulsion of the Pope had been an affront to the Catholic powers of Europe. While Austria invaded the new Republic from the north, the French, despite their own recent republican revolution, landed troops in the south and laid siege to Rome. Eventually the Roman defenses gave way and their leader, the already famous revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi, was forced to flee through the enemy lines to San Marino and then abroad with his small army of Italian patriots. #europe #history #welovehistory #welovemaps #map #1840s #19thcentury #victorianera #victorian #1849 #europeanhistory #yearofrevolutions #nationalism #germanconfederation #italianunification #july #july3 #romanrepublic #vaticancity #yearrevolutions #maps #todayinhistory #historytoday #historyteacher #historybuff #historygeek #historynerd #worldhistory #cartography #geopolitics (at Rome, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/BzctkPGAUVr/?igshid=sd3sd215osqj

Europe 170 years ago today: Hungarian War of Independence (14 Apr 1849) https://buff.ly/2VMGybK Austria’s success in Italy was not matched in Hungary, where the revolution had been reignited when the Austrian government ruled to reduce Hungarian lands and rights within the Empire. Europe 171 years ago today: First Italian War of Independence (11 Apr 1848) https://buff.ly/2Ks4Ma6 When news of Metternich’s flight reached Italy, Milan and Venice seized the opportunity to throw off Austrian rule. Italian nationalists throughout the peninsula rallied to their cause and by the end of April all the major Italian states had joined them in the fight against Austria. However the Papal States and Naples were only in the war to appease popular pressure and pulled out as soon as they could, leaving Sardinia as the main champion of Italian independence. #europe #history #welovemaps #map #1840s #1848 #april #april11 #austrianempire #metternich #europeanhistory #welovehistory #habsburgs #italianindependence #italy #kingdomofsardinia #lombardy #venice #yearrevolutions #maps #yearofrevolutions #revolution #19thcentury #victorianera #todayinhistory #historytoday #historyteacher #historybuff #historygeek #historynerd (at Milan, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwGxelNgb52/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1664kbtii2vlj

Europe 169 years ago today: Battle of Novara (23 Mar 1849) http://omniatlas.com/maps/europe/18490323/ Revolutionary feeling was still strong in the Italian states, prompting the Pope to flee Rome in November and leading to republics being declared in Rome and Tuscany in February. However the tide was turning. In March Sardinia renounced its truce with Austria but was swiftly defeated at the Battle of Novara and forced to come to terms, while at the same time Naples began its reconquest of the breakaway Kingdom of Sicily. #europe #history #welovemaps #1840s #1849 #austria #austrians #europeanhistory #germany #hungary #italy #maps #march #march23 #piedmont #sardinia #romanrepublic #sicily #tuscany #twosicilies #vaticancity #yearrevolutions #habsburg #italianunification #map #war #novara (at Novara, Italy)

Europe 169 years ago today: Rise of Napoleon III (19 Dec 1848) http://omniatlas.com/maps/europe/18481219/ In France, the new republic held the first French presidential election. The winner was Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, nephew of Napoleon I and an advocate of popular dictatorship who hoped to restore what many French saw as the glory days of the Napoleonic Empire. He immediately set about undermining the Second Republic and allying France with the reactionary powers. #europe #history #welovemaps #1840s #1848 #austria #december #december19 #europeanhistory #france #maps #napoleoniii #romanrepublic #twosicilies #vaticancity #yearrevolutions (at Paris, France)

Europe 169 years ago today: March Revolutions (21 Mar 1848) http://omniatlas.com/maps/europe/18480321/ The success of the French and Italian revolutions helped inspire uprisings across the German Confederation, with nationalists calling for a united German Empire. In mid-March, Vienna went into revolt, forcing the elderly Chancellor Metternich, a pillar of the conservative order in Europe since 1815, to resign and flee the city. With Metternich gone, revolution spread through the Austrian Empire with Hungary declaring its autonomy. On the 17th, Prussia was shaken by revolt in Berlin. After days of street fighting, King Frederick William backed down, declaring his support for the people and the German Empire. #europe #history #welovemaps #1840s #1848 #austria #baden #bavaria #berlin #europeanhistory #frankfurt #germanconfederation #germany #hessegrandducal #hungary #italy #lombardy #maps #march #march21 #prussia #saxony #switzerland #venice #wurttemberg #yearrevolutions (at Frankfurt, Germany)

Europe 169 years ago today: Year of Revolutions Begins (24 Feb 1848) http://omniatlas.com/maps/europe/18480224/ By 1848, Europe was already experiencing considerable social tension, in good part due to the rise of industrialization but also because of the European potato famine, both of which led to a migration of the poor to the cities. At the same time, the continent was becoming ideologically divided between the conservative order, which was rigidly maintaining the borders and regimes set up in 1815, and the various proponents of change - nationalists, republicans, liberals and socialists. In January, Sicily revolted against rule by Naples, triggering a wave of unrest among the Italian states. The next month, an uprising in Paris overthrew King Louis Philippe and proclaimed the second French Republic. The Year of Revolution had begun. #europe #history #welovemaps #1840s #1848 #europeanhistory #february #february24 #france #greatbritain #italy #maps #piedmontsardinia #sicily #tuscany #twosicilies #vaticancity #yearrevolutions (at Paris, France)

Europe 171 years ago today: German Question (03 May 1848) https://buff.ly/2V5BZNv The 1848 call for German unification had led to nationalists congregating in Frankfurt to establish a national assembly and work on replacing the German Confederation with an Empire. While there was some debate over whether German-speaking Austria would be included in the new Germany, there was little over Schleswig-Holstein, which had just thrown off Danish rule. In mid-April, the embryonic National Assembly declared war on Denmark, sending a Prussian-led mixed German army to Schleswig. #europe #history #welovemaps #map #1840s #1848 #austria #baden #denmark #europeanhistory #frankfurt #germanconfederation #germanhistory #germanunification #holstein #schleswigholstein #may #may3 #prussia #austrianempire #schleswig #habsburg #hohenzollern #yearofrevolutions #yearrevolutions #maps #todayinhistory #welovehistory #historyteacher #historybuff (at Flensburg) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bw_nsD_APdB/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=112s5z31cvmix
