Design Development
I am drawing inspiration from five pieces of artwork which involve the use of a frame structure. These pieces will help me to develop my concept into something more complex and imaginative.
Breathing Room, 2006 - 2012 by Antony Gormley
This piece actively is an architectural structure, and it also acts to define what interior and exterior space is without the need for walls and dividers. The human scale of the frame allows users to interact with the frames and decide for themselves their own path through the frames (Hughes, 2014).
The frames are made from 25 mm x 25 mm square aluminium tubes.
This piece inspires me to be abstract with what I design and create something the user can define, not being told what to make of it. It inspires me to think about lighting within my design and how lighting can be important when creating a space that can be accessed during the day and night.
3D Frames Installation by Yusuke Kamata
I was inspired by the use of diagonal and twisted lines, as the artist questions whether paintings and artwork should only be looked at from the from, or from other angles as well (retail design blog, 2019). I think this is a particularly important concept when creating a 3D structure as the artist needs to be aware of what their work looks like from all angles.
In my design, I am going to purposefully use diagonal beams within the structure to show the complexity of where the bombs were dropped across Portsmouth.
Multiple Realities by Chiharu Shiota
In Chiharu Shiota's work, the material used for the 'frame' is actually yarn (Neira, 2022). I was intrigued by this, as it is very different to the other artworks I have looked at. I liked how it was used to envelop the space in this historic building.
The artwork was created to make time stop and make the viewer think about existing in this space where time doesn't pass.
This piece inspires me to think about the material I am choosing to create my frame out of and use a material that is not necessarily the 'typical' material.
You Are Here by Rachel Stevens
This piece has been done by a college professor at New Mexico State University. She created these steel frames which capture the Albuquerque landscape at slightly different angles for each viewer that uses them to look through (Romo, 2013).
I think it is a really interesting concept to create, which uses the surroundings as art, and simply frames them for people to enjoy. I am inspired by this art in relation to thinking about how the bomb sites in Portsmouth can be portrayed to allow people to 'see the past' and imagine what once stood on the sites that have since been rebuilt, as well as those that haven't.
