1. Introduction
Welcome to my blog Golden Revival, dedicated to analyzing South Korean film and its industry. The main focus of this blog will be South Korea’s film Golden Age, taking place from the mid-1950s to the early 1970s, and its period of Revival, spanning from the late 1990s to the present day. This initial blog entry will serve as an introduction to both time periods, with some examples of key films and themes for each age of film, while also giving some historical insight into what outside sources and conflicts have influenced the film industry of South Korea. Let’s dive in!
The Golden Age
The Golden Age of South Korean film kicked off in the mid-1950s, with an increase in movie production from 15 films in 1954 to 111 films in 1959, the majority of which were melodramas. This spark in the industry was seen following the end of the Korean War (1950-1953) partly due to the rapid increase in production quality and the newly booming movie theatre attendance rates.
Up until 10 years prior, during the Japanese invasion, the movie theatres throughout South Korea had been divided up into theatres for Japanese citizens and, even fewer buildings, for South Korean citizens, which mainly showed activist pieces. With the liberation of South Korea, attendance rates of South Koreans at theatres began to rise as well, presenting the opportunity for further industry growth with an expanded audience.
Popular films throughout this period include Lee Kyu-Hwan’s retelling of Chunhyang-jeon (1955), Han Hyung-Mo’s Madame Freedom (1956), Kim Ki-Young’s The Housemaid (1960), Yu Hyun-Mok’s Obaltan (1960), and Kang Dae-Jin’s The Coachman (1961). Drama, more specifically melodrama, is a recurring genre throughout not only these popular films but also the majority of South Korean films to this time. This genre gained popularity through its entertaining and emotional pull, which is still seen by audiences in the South Korean film industry today.
The Revival
Following the Golden Age the film industry faced major censorship issues with exceeding levels of government control, reaching its height in 1970 during President Park Chung-Hee’s authoritarian-style presidential term. It wasn’t until the 1980s that the film industry would begin to recover once again, after the government started to ease up on its control over it, with laws being put in place to ensure this.
The Revival of South Korean film has also been referred to as the “Renaissance” of the country’s film industry, or “New Korean Cinema”, finding funding through chaebols. Throughout this time period the melodrama category continues to thrive among Korean audiences but has also begun to make waves internationally as well. With the globalization of film and media, South Korea has become home to one of the largest film industries in the world by capturing audiences with its captivating dramas and nail-biting thrillers. Along with sharing its own film culture with the rest of the world, South Korea’s film industry has also picked up a few things from various influencing countries. Action Blockbusters, which originated in the US, became popular due to its exciting twists and massive star power. Today, all of South Korea’s top-grossing films have been released within this period of Revival, with films that opened even more doors recently such as Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite.
Other popular films throughout this period include Kang Je-Gyu’s Shiri (1999), Kwak Jae-Yong’s My Sassy Girl (2001), Park Chan-Wook’s Oldboy (2003), and Yeon Sang-Ho’s Train to Busan (2016).

You Me Up' Erectile Dysfunction Examiner Yoon Si-yoon "I was attracted because it wasn't obvious"
Enter 2021.08.23. 9:10 am
Reporter Lee Min-ji
[Newsen Reporter Lee Min-ji] Actor Yoon Shi-yoon plays the role of a public servant in crisis.
'You Raise Me Up' (written by Mo Ji-hye/directed by Kim Jang-han), which will be released on August 31, is a 30-year-old 'Yong-sik' (Yoon Si-yoon) who meets her first love, 'Luda' (Ahn Hee-yeon), a urologist. It is a sexy and lively comedy that stands tall as the main character of life after reunion with the movie. Yoon Shi-yoon takes on the role of Do Yong-sik, a student who is in crisis with erectile dysfunction.
“I was drawn to the fact that it was a drama dealing with an unambiguous subject,” said Yoon Shi-yoon, who shared the reason for choosing the work. He continued, “I found out that erectile dysfunction damages the body and mind at the same time. The episode that melted such a situation by comparing it to the atrophied and unstable youth generation was impressive,” he added.
If you look at the images and videos that have been released so far, you can see the overgrown expression on the face, the pink outfit and even the prop points. Yoon Shi-yoon's synchro rate with Do Yong-sik was perfect. In response, he said, "I wanted to express the accumulated psychology of Yong-shik, who often suffered from a sense of helplessness and suddenly reached the stage of despair. Furthermore, there is a story of Yongsik getting comforted and obsessed with 'pink'. In order to properly reflect this, I paid attention to every action.” It was a transformation that was possible because of the effort and passion to approach the character delicately.
Do Yong-sik is a person who, although bowing his head in the midst of repeated crises, does not give up on his moral duty as a human being. Yoon Si-yoon said, "I have the courage to convey my thoughts and feelings confidently," and heralded the new charm of the character. This is the reason why he chose “Yongsik’s leap to stand tall by joining forces with the people around him to regain his lost vitality” as a point to watch.
Finally, Yoon Si-yoon, who said, "The biggest advantage of 'You Me Up' is fun, not obvious. You can find so many pleasant stories and sympathy points, so I think you can all look forward to it.”
The first part of 'You Me Up', which shows Yoon Si-yoon's dynamic acting, will be released exclusively on Wave on August 31st. (Photo = Wave)

River Where the Moon Rises

This series is based on the life of On Dal, a general in the era of the Three Kingdoms. Even though the ending forced the happy ending between the princess and On Dal, I liked the series for a couple of reasons. First, because it wasn't a historical drama where the mind game was too intense. Situations were solved rather quickly and both side of the conflict were clever and by this I mean that the royal family was able to outwit their enemies a few times.
Second, this was a love story where the power struggles of the court were only present because Ga Jin was a princess who was actively involved in politics. She was a military force as well as a diplomate. She wanted to be king when she was younger. She went from princess to assassin to princess again. She plays an active role in politics and wars, something very rare in historical dramas. Probably not very accurate but nice nevertheless. I liked that On Dal was a peaceful man and it was really sad to see how being in the army was killing his spirit. In the end, letting him go was the best way for him to heal. There are a couple of female characters in this story who are forces to be reckon with: Ga Jin, Mo Yong, Ta Ra Jin, Queen Yeon and Queen Jin Bi. They each fight for the people they love in their own way.
What broke my heart was General Go and Mo Yong. They obviously loved each other but his obsession with Ga Jin distroyed their relationship in a way. I also felt that the Crown Prince had similar weakness from his father, he lacked faith on the loyalty of his family. His father doubted his wife and ended up ordering her murder. And the Crown Prince, when he became king doubted his sister. But at least, he didn't commit murder and was able to see things with a clear mind.
I liked the series.
