🔀 for steddie 💕
Thank you so much for the ask Janai!!!!!! Just so we all know I'm shuffling my big "Liked Songs" playlist for this ask game, so any song I've saved on Spotify since 2017 could come up lmao. For this ask I got Love Might Be Found (Volcano) by Montaigne! Oooooh man okay this is such a good song, it's about being in the earlier stages of a relationship and then having to leave them for some reason, so you're wishing for a reason to stay and see if things would've worked out (like a natural disaster closing the airports or smth).
The obvious Steddie AU for this (at least imo) is therefore a modern AU where Corroded Coffin has the opportunity to make it big and achieve their dreams of becoming a famous metal band, but doing so requires moving away from Indiana. Moving away from Steve (who at this point is friends-with-benefits with Eddie and they're both hopelessly pining). Steve, who doesn't want to be the reason Eddie gives up on his dreams, just lets him go and pretends he's not madly in love with Eddie, since he thinks (correctly) that Eddie loves him back and would refuse to leave Steve behind if they were boyfriends. Eddie is heartbroken that Steve's not trying harder to keep him, because he really thought they had the start of something good together. Cue a prolonged period of extreme angst and long-distance pining from both of them, Eddie writes at least four heartbroken ballads about how much he misses Steve, Steve follows CC's progress in the music industry religiously but refuses to admit that to anyone. (Robin knows, though. She always does).
EVENTUALLY they get their shit together when CC throw a launch party for their sophomore album, at which point they've blown up enough that they can afford to invite their friends from back home as well. It's actually Jeff who invites Steve, because you've got him fucked up if you think he's going to listen to Eddie moan about The One Who Got Away™ for another fucking second. Steve is very skeptical of the invite, because he hasn't heard from Eddie since a few months after they moved away, but eventually caves on the condition he can bring Robin. They spend almost the entire launch party staunchly not speaking to one another, which gets very awkward when some of Eddie's new friends from the music industry start asking questions about how they know each other (because they very obviously do). It only stops when Steve and Robin are having an emotional debrief in the men's bathroom (because Robin is not going to let a gendered bathroom sign keep her away from her platonic soulmate in his time of need - and also CC hired out a function room for a private event, so the only people even using the bathroom are from their event). Mid-breakdown, just as Steve's about to admit he still has feelings for Eddie all this time, they get interrupted by someone entering the bathroom. It's Eddie, because of course it is.
Eddie tries to play it off as needing a piss, but he's obviously come in here for a mental breakdown of his own. Robin takes one look at the absolutely stricken way he looks at Steve, like he's been stabbed right through the chest at the sight of him, and takes a risk. She says she's going to guard the bathroom door until they sort their shit out and leaves them alone in there together.
To her credit, she lasts almost half an hour at the bathroom door of death-glaring every drunk man who so much as looks her way. But then she hears a crashing noise, followed by the distinct sound of someone moaning coming from the bathroom behind her, and decides those bastards are on their own now.
Send me a 🔀 and a pairing, and I'll shuffle my playlist and give you an AU about that pairing based on the first song that comes up!

Meddling Kids, XII
WARNING! This work/series contains mentions of slut shaming, EDs, gore, implied torture, implied SA, SH, violence, and many other things that can trigger some viewers. I will also mention that this work does NOT intend to glorify, romanticize, normalize, or promote ANY of these behaviors or ideas. That is not who I am and that is not what I stand for. Please do not take that message away when you read this.
I finally got my motivation back again. They fuck shit UP in this one.
Jimmy and Pete sat across from one another, picking at their questionable lunches. The air was oddly quiet. They’d been waiting for their third partner in crime to join them for the last ten minutes. It wasn’t like Gary to be late. He exchanged looks with Pete, who raised his brows and flicked his eyes to the wide-open cafeteria door.
“Do you think we should look for Gary?” Jimmy asked, pushing away the sweet soft ground beef mess meant to be a soft taco.
“Do you think we should?” Pete responded.
“That’s why I asked you, you idiot,” he huffed.
Pete sighed, getting up to throw away the leftovers of his packed lunch. Jimmy took that as a yes and threw away his meal. Good riddance.
Jimmy threw a wink to Trent, who grinned and blew him a kiss in return. Pete rolled his eyes at Jimmy’s flirtatious antics, pushing the heavy doors open to exit the main building. Above, the stale sun shined on them. Only Bullworth Academy could make a perfect sunny day seem so bleak. The energy shifted as they walked inside the boys' dorms, where a few nerds sat on the couch watching Bill Nye as a desperate form of entertainment.
They disregarded the others that greeted them, opting to walk to the far end of the hall, where the lights were flickering or dead. Multiple cobwebs nested in the corners of the high ceiling, and dust bunnies curled into the floorboards. This place needed a serious revamp. Thank the gods Carbblesnitch decided to finally hire a construction company to renovate and expand the boy’s dorms. Jimmy was tired of having to use the locker room showers every morning. He was happy, even if it meant Jimmy would soon be woken by heavy construction and bear-bellied men yelling for whatever tool or jackass they needed to help.
Jimmy grabbed the doorknob, letting himself and Pete in unannounced.
“Hey bitch, why’re you late?” He raised a brow.
Gary suddenly jumped, yelling in surprise as he yanked on his signature leather armband to hide away his nasty habit.
“You morons ever heard of knocking?” Gary shouted.
“Well, we got worried,” Pete shrugged.
“Yeah, you’re not late, dude,” Jimmy added.
“Well, for your information, I have court-mandated therapy today,” the brunette grumbled.
“Oh,” Pete replied with wide eyes.
Jimmy stayed silent, nodding in acceptance as the gears turned in his head. He thought of Heartland Academy and Mr. Joiner, Daniel Lamb’s alias. He loosely remembered discussing hospital records. With Daniel’s past of violent murder, maybe they could find something within Happy Volts.
Well, the worst Gary could say was no.
“Can we come with?” Jimmy asked.
“Why? Wanna hear my sob story or look at the crackheads in the rehab program?” Gary grinned.
“Maybe a bit of both. We could use the free entertainment,” Jimmy replied with a neutral shrug.
“Alright, you can come, just don’t act dumb,” Gary said, exiting his dorm.
Instead of taking a reasonable route, Gary ushered them to follow from a weird backway. It was almost as if Gary didn’t want anyone to know. Jimmy could see why. The entire school falsely labeled him as an evil sociopath. He’d had plenty of moments where he wanted to sock someone in the jaw for talking shit. Who the fuck were any of those kids to diagnose his best friend? Sure, Gary could be a mythic bitch sometimes, but he was Jimmy’s best friend.
The trio ducked into bushes, and once away from Bullworth’s earshot, Jimmy spoke up.
“We’re getting that psychos’ records.”
“What?” Gary blinked.
“We’re gonna sneak in and try to get Daniel Lamb’s records,” Jimmy elaborated.
“Are you fucking crazy?” Pete asked, cutting between the two as they walked.
“Do you want to put an end to this whole murder mystery shit?” Jimmy replied.
Pete stammered, thinking, but Gary beat him to an answer.
“Yes.”
“You got a method to your madness?’ Pete asked.
“We sneak in and get it, boom,” Jimmy replied.
“No, those orderlies will see you. They have cameras in there. They’re old, but still cameras,” Gary explained. “You’ll have to sneak past orderlies and find uniforms in the laundry room. It’s in the back, but be quiet.”
“Got it,” Jimmy nodded while Pete nervously took an interest in his shoes and the dirt road.
They made a turn, Gary pointing ahead to an area covered by bushes and foliage, sending Pete and Jimmy on their way before he dashed to the gate.
Pete and Jimmy stood back, crouching as they watched Gary flash an ID card to an orderly, who opened the gate to let him in. He then entered the facility, an orderly at his side to escort him.
Jimmy and Pete sat there. It was a long twenty minutes they waited. Doing this was possibly one of the riskier things they’d done besides running into psychotic clowns and a drug gang. Hell, what hadn’t the three of them done? They should all collectively be in the county jail next to Johnny and Norton. Jimmy looked up, seeing the tree. He figured Gary was well into a therapy session about now. He turned to Pete.
“Can you climb trees?” He asked.
“You’re not serious about this, right? Can I just look out?’ Pete pleaded.
“No, I can’t sort through files and kick ass at once. Now climb the stupid tree,” Jimmy snapped.
Pete scrambled, struggling to use his core and upper body muscles to pull himself up the tree. Jimmy soon followed, letting out a quiet laugh as Pete landed hard on his ass. The pair crawled towards a bush, watching an orderly slowly pace, boredom and disinterest in his eyes. Once he fully turned his back, Jimmy and Pete ran for it, getting inside.
Gary hated many things, but therapy had to be up there.
He nervously fiddled with his hands struggling to make eye contact as Dr. Bambillo made notes on him. Gary felt more like a specimen than a patient as if he was something to be studied and not understood. He didn’t feel human here. He felt like a made-up villain out of some weird sadistic writer’s horror novel.
Dr. Bamillo cleared his throat, causing Gary to move his grey eyes to meet the man before him.
“Now, Gary, have you had any thoughts of hurting yourself? Or others, perhaps?” He asked with a raised brow.
Gary had to think for a moment. Did he want to go inpatient? Or shove it down and cork it? He couldn’t decide. Both options were terrible, but he had to pick his poison. He’d rather die than get locked up with the nut jobs here.
“No, I haven’t. Why?” He asked, his voice shallow.
“Well, I’ve seen a few of your behavior reports lately. You show apathy for your education and peers. You don’t seem to care. How does that look to you? Considering your brothers’ circumstances and your parents' name. Surely it’d be a shame to cost them both sons.”
Gary sat back, gritting his teeth as Dr. Bambillo ran his egotistical mouth. He hated this man with every bone, organ, and blood vessel he had. Gary always wondered why he left these sessions feeling worse than when he came. Gary wanted to go home. Hell, he’d rather be at Bullworth.
“Time and time again, I’ve read you have this loud, almost narcissistic confidence about you. Yet, when you’re here, it goes away. Perhaps it humbles you that someone with more knowledge and power is in the room? Does it bother you?” he asked.
“No sir,” he mumbled.
Dr. Bambillo looked Gary up and down, prying apart every weakened, cracked piece of emotional armor he’d built. Gary felt so small. All he could do was look away and pray to any god or higher power that would listen to make this all go away. Dr. Bambillo had long decided on him being crazy. That Gary had somehow gotten brain damage from falling off a horse one too many times, and now he was a screw loose from killing himself or others.
Just as Bambillo went to torment Gary with another invasive, unprofessional question, Gary popped.
“I’m not crazy! Stop it! Just stop it! I’m a normal fucking kid! I swear to god!” He screamed. “I’m not traumatized, I’m not depressed, and I’m not fucking crazy! Stop telling me I’m crazy! I know what I am, and I’m not some brain-dead sociopath that wants to kill people! I don’t want drugs, and I don’t want your stupid court-mandated therapy that doesn’t do shit!”
Dr. Bambillo’s eyes were wide, but his brows quickly furrowed as he reached for his pen to write.
That’s when the power cut, sending them and the rest of the facility into pitch blackness.
“SHit!” Jimmy yelled, fumbling with the other switches in the fuse box.
“What did you do!?” Pete yelled, pulling down his orderly mask.
“I don’t fucking know!” Jimmy hollered.
They scrambled to get out of the halls. Alarms and red lights were flashing as the cells opened one by one. The overjoyed, sadistic screams from the isolation unit echoed down the hall as helpless orderlies cried for security that was no match for the criminally insane. For the first time since he was a child, Jimmy felt genuine terror. Pete was also pretty sure he pissed himself.
It didn’t take long for them to yank an emergency exit open, scrambling as they rounded to their tunnel.
Petey collapsed in exhaustion, trembling as old, yellowed files scattered on the ground below them. Jimmy huffed, listening to the loud alarms and desperate screams.
Looking up, he saw a figure barreling toward them at full speed. Jimmy instantly reacted with a punch, sending the living body over into the dirt. A familiar yowl of pain escaped them.
“You moron!” Gary yelled, holding his now bloody nose.
“Shit! My bad,” Jimmy said, pulling the taller male to a stand and offering his mask as a tissue.
“Bitch! Fuck you mean ‘my bad’? You just released a bunch of criminally insane men!” Pete screeched, picking himself up off the ground.
“You let those maniacs loose?” Gary asked, alarmed.
“I didn’t mean to! I thought the switch was for the cameras, not the power!” Jimmy defended.
“Well, let’s fucking go ‘cause if we sit here, we’ll be some nice human leather!” Gary said as he shoved Pete forward before he ran.
Jimmy followed suit. Where had they gone wrong?

While the term home-improvement is often associated with costly remodeling jobs, there are plenty of simple ways to increase the value of your home. With a little home improvement knowledge, you can get a better-looking home with out spending much time or money. Take a look at these tips to get an idea of where to start.
Always comparison shop for contractors when you need to fix up your home. Later, if you decide to sell your house, it is almost certain you will need to have some repair work done. If the work you require is extensive enough, you will have to hire a contractor. This is not something to do on the spur of the moment. Not all contractors are created equal; shop around before engaging one! Use carpet samples to carpet a whole room! Retail stores often throw away their samples. Cut each sample up into smaller pieces and tack or glue them into place for free floor covering. Cut them in identically sized pieces for a tile effect or cut them in irregular geometric shapes for an abstract look. Patch the holes in your walls with toothpaste! Yes, this is definitely a temporary cover up but it works to hide an ugly hole until you can come up with the materials for a more permanent fix. Use white toothpaste and trowel it into the hole with a butter knife. You can really spice things up with a uniquely made coffee table vs a pre-made standard one. An old trunk or chest look great in the center of a living room and provide storage, also. Place some accessories and books on the top and it will make your coffee table stand out. You could even add a small tablecloth and dainty tea cups to create a country look. Seek out advice before starting on do it yourself projects. There may be important steps you will overlook if you don't know what you are doing. Although many household jobs can be done yourself, it is always a good idea to ask an expert how to do the job properly. Do not forget your chimneys, downspouts and gutters. It is essential to make repairs if necessary. If you do not clean it regularly, your chimney might catch fire; your downspouts and gutters may clog and lead to some water damage if you don't pay attention. Think about the colors you want to add to your home and decide what is a good fit for the impression you want to give off. Linens and cotton fabric add to a peaceful atmosphere. Put some potpourri atop the coffee table and have scented candles in order to create a tranquil heaven for yourself. Hang your pickle jars up by their necks! Well, really by their lids. Jars you would normally discard make great storage containers. To organize them tack the lids in a line under your shelves or cupboards. Fill the jars and screw them in place to make see through storage for small items like screws, pencils, pens, whatever! To seal your home against pesky drafts and keep your warmed or cooled air inside, pick up some foam insulators for outlets and light switches located on exterior walls, especially those on the north side of your home. These inexpensive insulators can save you money on your energy bills and are extremely simple to install. Adding extra insulation in your home can help save you money. An older home may not have enough insulation. Adding more to your crawl space or attic is going to lower utility bills and help you save money for years to come. If healthy homes compliance have decided to stain your deck, then you should be aware that there are a lot of options in staining products. For example, you could select toners, solid stains, oil-based stains, and clear stains. Each surface has its pros and cons: do more research about the kind of surface you are interested in to make sure this is your best option. No matter what your budget, there are plenty of ways to get a better-looking home. Keep these tips in mind the next time you look around your house. You should easily be able to find a do-it-yourself project that will make your home feel like new again.

Matthew McConaughey's 13 Life Lessons
1. Life is not easy
“Do not fall into the entitlement trap of feeling like a victim,” said McConaughey. “You are not. Get over it and get on with it. Yes, most things are more rewarding when you break a sweat to get them.”
2. “Unbelievable” is the stupidest word in the dictionary
The actor stated that the word “unbelievable” should never come out of anybody’s mouth, and people should give each other more credit when it’s due. He also added it’s not “unbelievable” when people perform out-of-character actions, such as missing a deadline. “If there’s one thing you can depend on people being, it’s people,” said McConaughey. “I think ‘unbelievable’ is an unbelievably stupid word.”
3. Happiness is different than joy
The actor noted that once he started acting in films that brought him joy rather than happiness, he started receiving more success. “As soon as the work, the daily making of the movie, the doing of the deed, became the reward in itself for me,” he said, “I got more box office, more accolades, more respect than I ever had before.
4. Define success for yourself
McConaughey says he defines himself by five things: fatherhood, being a good husband, health, career and friendships. “I want to keep all five in healthy shape,” he said. “If I don’t keep maintenance on them, one of them is going to get weak.
5. Process of elimination is the first step to our identity
“Alright, alright alright,” said McConaughey as he recalled the three lines he was first hired to say on Dazed and Confused. The actor noted that while starting with those three lines turned into a larger role for his character in the film, there were two scenes that his character, Bill Wooderson, shouldn’t have been in. “Back then, making my first film, I wanted more screen time. I wanted to be in the scene longer, but I shouldn’t have been there. Wooderson shouldn’t have been there,” said McConaughey.
6. “Don’t leave crumbs” — and the beauty of delayed gratification
“If I do my job well today and that movie keeps re-running on TV, five years from now I’m getting checks in the mailbox,” he said. “It’s a heck of a deal. Get some return on investment.”
7. Dissect your successes (and the reciprocity of gratitude)
The actor noted that he’s spent a lot of time reading the bad reviews of his films that are written by respected critics. “I don’t obsess on the unfavorable aspect of their review, but I do seek what I can learn from it. Their displeasure actually uncovers and makes more apparent what I do do well.”
8. Make voluntary obligations
The actor insists on making personal protocols with yourself that may not apply to everyone else. “While no one throws you a party while you abide by them, nobody is going to arrest you when you break them, either.”
9. From “can” to “want”
The actor emphasized that having access to different things doesn’t mean you necessarily need them. He recalled a lesson he learned when he received his first paycheck, in 1995, for being in Boys on the Side, and started living the good life with an adobe house complete with his first maid. After he told a friend that he had a maid that was pressing his jeans, he realized that he never really liked the look of ironed jeans in the first place. “I never had my jeans pressed again,” said McConaughey.
10. A roof is a man-made thing
The actor noted that he, like everyone else, has choked up or felt tense due to expectations. “We have created a fictitious ceiling, a roof to our expectations of ourselves,” he said. “We shouldn’t create these restrictions on ourselves”
11. Turn the page
“If we’re going to make a mistake, we’ve got to own them, make amends and you’ve got to move on,” said McConaughey.
12. Give your obstacles credit
The actor admitted that he tries to scare himself at least once a day. “I get butterflies every time before I go to work,” he said. “I was nervous before I got here to speak tonight.”
13. How do we know when we cross the truth?
The actor noted that after rising to fame in 1996, following his star turn in A Time to Kill, he began questioning the truth in his celebrity. On a 21-day “fasting” trip to Peru, he noted it took him 13 “hellish” days to purge in order to feel relaxed. “I was sick of myself,” he said. “Wrestling with the loss of my anonymity, I was guilt-ridden for the sins of my past.” On the morning of his thirteenth day in Peru, he admitted he finally woke up at one with himself. This was confirmed when he went on a morning walk and was greeted by a mirage of butterflies. “For the first time, I stopped thinking about what was coming up next, and my anxieties were at a crazy ease,” he said.

Home Improvement? Yes, Succeed You Can!What if you could totally transform the look of your home with just a few little tricks that do not cost much? Re-vamping your home can add some spice to your life and freshen up dated-looking rooms. This is especially useful around the holidays if you will be hosting guests. Follow these easy tips and add a little flair to your home today.<br/><br/>Hardwood, tile and other smooth surfaces may seem like a good idea in high traffic areas like stairs and hallways, but those same areas can then echo and reverberate throughout the entire house. You wouldn't want to hear every footstep going down the hallway if you were in a bedroom sleeping.<br/><br/>Want to save a coat or two of paint? When you paint wood or drywall that needs to be primed first tint the primer to match your final paint color. By tinting the primer you will reduce the amount of coats you need to paint the surface by a coat or two.<br/><br/>Place candles throughout your house. Candles can create a wonderful effect in your home. <a href="https://www.mchinese.ca/home.php?mod=space&uid=1228827">electrician hamilton</a> will be heightened if the candle is scented with a good fragrance. You can place candles in bedrooms, bathrooms, and dining areas. Bathrooms especially benefit from the use of scented candles. Scented candles will give your house a homey feel.<br/><br/>You can make a huge positive difference in the appearance of a room by installing a new floor in it. You can choose to get it professionally installed or do it yourself. Be sure to seek advice before deciding which method is preferable.<br/><br/>Expanding your storage options could be the perfect choice for your next home improvement project. Consider adding shelving to a coat closet or building a small table with drawers to add to your kitchen. Even small projects like these will give you a place to put toys, hats, or silverware.<br/><br/>Before using your kitchen cabinet drawers to put your utensils and other things in, consider a solution to keep them clean. A lot of discount and dollar stores sell vinyl wallpaper that has an adhesive back. Cut a piece of the adhesive wallpaper to fit your drawer, then peel off the backing and adhere. Taking this step will prevent your drawers from getting damaged and the wallpaper can be easily peeled off and replaced.<br/><br/>Consider hiring a professional to do the electrical work for your home improvement project. It may seem easy to change out an outlet from two prongs to three, but if you are unfamiliar with electrical work, the safest thing to do is to have an electrician take care of the rewiring for you.<br/><br/>A good tip for home improvement is to make sure you make smart investments in your home. Try to improve parts of your home that potential buyers would be interested in when you plan on selling your home. This will insure that you get the most out of your money.<br/><br/>Increase your homes efficiency to improve your personal finance. A lot of the heat you pay for is escaping out of cracks in doorframes, windows, and through poor insulation. By investing in ways to make your home more efficient, you can cut your bills down tremendously. LED Light bulbs are another easy way to save extra money.<br/><br/>Look for the line of nails! If you need to snug up a protruding piece of paneling or drywall you can normally tell where to add a new nail or screw just by closely observing the surface of the panel. It was installed by nailing it to the underlying wall studs and evidence of those studs will likely still be visible.<br/><br/>Whenever you need to get a home improvement project done, you should never hire a contractor who is unlicensed. Contractors are required by law to have some certifications. This does not guarantee competence, but it is legally required. Unlicensed contractors are not insured. This makes working with them very risky.<br/><br/>In just a few steps, you have discovered how to make the rooms of your home look new and inviting. A few color changes here, new accessories there, and each room is transformed and ready for prime time. Revamp your rooms, over time, using these tips and you will be proud of your home for many years to come.

Coin-Operated
Ten years ago, I worked at a contract engineering company. Their business model was if you had a concept, they would do the engineering to turn the idea into a product… For a price. This little addition led to great confusion, anger and lawsuits.
The core of the issue was that customers did not understand the company was not a friend or partner. Instead, they were a coin-operated entity, meaning that when the customer stopped paying; they stopped working. This almost makes sense, but there is another aspect of a coin-operated company that is not always appreciated.
When a customer approached us with a concept, we gave them a time and money estimate along with estimated material costs. After the customer agreed to hire us, we would begin development. Some projects went according to plan, but others required multiple attempts or encountered unexpected issues. As a result, costs ballooned, which angered customers.
I am sure you have experienced the same frustration with a project like a house renovation. For example, if a contractor gets hired to replace a tile floor. All goes well until they find asbestos, mold, or dry rot. Then, the contractor asks for lots more money to fix the problem(s).
What about the other side of this situation? The contractor is a fair person and does not want to cheat anybody. They do not have x-ray vision to see asbestos under ten old tile layers. No matter how the project goes, they must pay bills, pay employees, and profit. If you wish for them to stop working, they would say, “Fine, pay me for the work I have done so far.” Sometimes, a contractor can do no wrong, but the enraged customer feels they got mega-ripped off.
I can recall customer meetings exploding when we explained how much the next step would cost, and those hurt feelings have stuck with me. “I thought you were our partner.” “That is way too much money.” “You never told me it could cost so much.” “You should cover this cost.” “This is not my fault. It’s your fault.” “You should have expected this problem.” It is easy to get comfortable with a coin-operated contractor and forget their place.
One project failed right from the start. We promised them an easy project, but it took too long and failed miserably. Essentially, we charged them for junk. Was this our fault? Yes, we failed to understand the problem when we developed the estimate. Should we have known better? Yes, because we developed the estimate based on worthless information. (We worked through email and did not go to the site to do our research.) Would we make the same mistake? No, we learned to ask more questions. The problem was that the customer paid for us to learn this lesson.
I hired a building contractor to remove cement and install pavers from my backyard. When they dug up one area, they found long roots and spent two days hacking them all out (40+ wheelbarrows full). I wish I had known about the roots in advance, as did the contractor, but we did not have x-ray vision. The extra work added a lot to my bill, but I watched them hack away the roots (doing actual work), and the amount they charged me was fair. Still, I was not happy.
Now, hold on. What about a fixed-price contract? The problem with a fixed-price contract is that all the information must be present to develop it. If a customer insists upon a fixed price to ensure a profit, the company must account for the unknown by adding a buffer. In addition, it takes time to make a proper estimate that accounts for everything, and most companies do not wish to put in the effort as they know the customer will not go through with an expensive project.
I developed fixed price estimates at this engineering company; our buffer was 40%. We usually did alright with these, but one lost money because of poor contract wording. The customer took advantage of the loose deliverables by adding additional requirements. Essentially, they got three times the work out of us.
The heart of the confusion over hiring a coin-operated company is the pride in the work and going the extra mile. This added value might include an extra coat of paint or staying late to finish the job. Coin-operated companies get paid for these additional services, and when a job is done, they are done. Want more work? Put in another coin.
I think of book editors as coin-operated. You give them your document, they glance at it and quote a price. Usually, two to five cents per word. So, the author signs the contract, and a few days later, the editor says, “Hey, I found big issues and need to charge you more.”
The author would counter, “You saw the entire book and gave me a quote.” “Yeah, I know, but this mess needs extra work.” So, the author pays.
Usually, things work out with editors, but I have had three unpleasant experiences. One editor did a light pass, catching minor errors. Another hated my book, deleted an entire chapter without explanation, and I did not use 80% of their edits. A third editor introduced as many errors as they found.
Did I pay? It takes time to review the edits, and quality is not apparent until looking deep into them. Thus, I had to pay, which made me understand they were not my partners.
This coin-operated mentality also addresses ethics. Was my company behaving ethically when they delivered a pile of junk to that customer? From the customer’s viewpoint, they were an unethical company. From the company’s viewpoint, we fulfilled the contract. Still, I feel bad about my participation.
I must step back and think about my lousy editor experiences with the coin-operated mentality. They did a terrible job but fulfilled the contract. Fortunately, the fourth editor I worked with did a fantastic job, and I gained experience.
    You’re the best -Bill

An older home may not have enough insulation. Adding more to your crawl space or attic is going to lower utility bills and help you save money for years to come. No matter what your budget, there are plenty of ways to get a better-looking home. Keep these tips in mind the next time you look around your house. You should easily be able to find a do-it-yourself project that will make your home feel like new again.

A Cautionary Tale of International Deceit and Fraud
Tumblr media
The other day I had a call scheduled with a potential client. The subject of the call would be about a rather mundane task of data backup. Instead, the call morphed into a cautionary tale of international deceit and fraud.
The potential client I spoke with, let’s call him Fred, provided some background about his company. A real estate, billing management call center, that had grown 3x in the last several years. Business was good. He had no US employees; every employee was located either in the Philippines or India. His COO is in India.
Interesting premise. Fred completely outsourced his employees overseas. Keep the overhead low, find English speaking call center employees who work from home, provide them with VoIP phones and laptops. They can start taking calls with low overhead.
Things were rolling along until one day, a prospective customer (let’s call him Rob), who Fred hadn’t heard from in a few weeks, reached out with a strange question. Rob asked Fred if he had heard from his COO about getting on-boarded as a new client. Fred said, that no, he had not heard anything from the COO. Rob mentioned that he was in the process of being onboarded and wanted to reach out to Fred about the process.
Fred was baffled, he asked Rob if had any emails about the onboarding process. Rob then sent Fred several emails from the COO and another employee, who was CC’d on the message. At this point Fred started to get a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach. He felt something was off. There was no logical explanation, in Fred’s mind, for these things to occur.
Fred was right. He confronted the COO on a call and asked him about the email and onboarding Rob. The COO responded that he had indeed onboarded the perspective client…..to his own company!
Fred later found out the COO had built a “shadow company” that looked and acted just like Fred’s company.
Overseas “Shadow Company”
This “shadow company” took the name of Fred’s company and just added the world “Global” to the end of it. It had a website that looked almost exactly like Fred’s. It even was built and designed by the same company, in India, that built Fred’s website.
It seems that the COO was all too happy to help Fred get the systems up and running. He had good reason to do this, the COO had set up all the licensing in his name. However, the billing was setup in Fred’s name.
Fred hired attorneys in India, the Philippines and in the USA.
Going into the call, I really had no idea it would take such a dramatic turn. To say I was surprised would be an understatement.
Fred wanted to know if there was any way we could wrestle back the email server from the COO. Nothing else was important to Fred, only the email was valuable. Fred was paying for the email, cloud storage and CRM software for the company. He thought that because he was paying for the licensing, it was licensed to him.
With further discovery, I learned not only did the COO license the email server, but he also registered the company’s domain name. In the virtual world, this is a major problem. It basically means that the COO owns the company’s website name and everything that goes along with it.
In this case, the COO had all the cards, without access to the domain name and administrator access to the email servers, Fred was out of luck. He would have fight it out in court.
The cautionary tale
Here lies the cautionary tale. The COO had taken advantage of Fred’s lack of technology acumen and understanding. By placing trust in someone you have never met, in a country on the other side of the world, you take a huge risk.
Yes, hindsight is 20/20. However, let’s get in Fred’s initial mindset. The COO was the perfect partner. He was tech savvy, had connections to find qualified labor in Asia and had a background in call center operations. This COO would allow Fred to build a business model that he could scale quickly. On paper it made a lot of sense.
Until it didn’t. Businesses today are reliant on technology, especially business that are built to scale quickly. Building a business, especially one that relies on technology, means you must have good consul; a trusted partner with the technology experience that you lack. (There are a lot of technology consultants to choose from, however it’s important to know that most consultants specialize in certain areas of technology).
Ask business associates, tenant reps, bankers, or friends for a reference to a good IT services company. If all else fails, search the internet for a local IT services company. That way you can meet with them, ask them questions, and make assessments to see if they are a good fit.
Over the years, I’ve worked with many rapid growth companies. A good number of these companies came to me for assistance, because they underestimated the need for well-designed infrastructure and proper technology governance.
These companies focused on their core business, which is understandable. However, they all failed to understand that technology powered every aspect of their business. When the technology can’t keep up with the growth, business processes become muddled and inefficient. Companies that get in this position often find it an expensive and time-consuming process to right the ship.
If your business doesn’t work with an IT consultant, I recommend that you start to determine what you don’t know. Write a list of the technology you currently use or think you need for your business. In many cases, that list will be about 30%-50% of what is actually needed. Even with the basics, you can start to have discussions with a prospective technology partner.
A technology partner will do a deep dive to understand your business and its objectives. They will do much of the heavy lifting of finding vendors, software, infrastructure, etc. that will run your business. The consultant will gather bids from various vendors, listing the strengths and weakness of each vendor. They will queue up all the vendor contracts and agreements for you to execute.
Remember, technology consultants are experts in this field, they know more about technology than you do, or you ever want to. Taking this step will allow you to focus on growing your business
I was a CIO. One of the many duties I had, was vendor management. Some vendors could be challenging to deal with, even for a technology professional. I realized that a business without a CIO or IT Manager could find a lot of difficulty navigating the vendor sea. I decided to leave the C-level role and founded TechNoir Solutions with the intention to be a technology advocate for my clients.

Business Insurance: Covering intended for Worst Case Scenarios
One of the inquiries new business masters need to ask is definitely "How much is definitely business insurance? inches They've quit their very own high-paying opportunities in the particular corporate world, said goodbye to the corporate jungle, and eventually followed their minds and opened some sort of business of their own. Is actually what they've often dreamed of performing, and the possibilities of everything excite them to no end. But putting upward a business is not as easy as it looks. First, they need to think of a great innovative concept gowns never been performed before. Whether it provides been done just before, they have to think of best places to put the fresh business and that its target industry is. Second, they will have to contract themselves into a good already highly aggressive space, and they have to think of strategies to defeat their nearest competitors. Building a business from scratch will come with a price of training course. They have in order to spend money on capital in order to actually keep it going. They have to handle customers plus their demands. Additional than that, they have to deal with a lot involving risk. Adding a new business is actually a bet, and there's a great deal of risk involved. This is exactly where business insurance comes in.
Tumblr media
Business insurance has many faces, for the reason that risks involved in managing a business are plenty. Just what do business users have to insure, exactly? First, will be certainly Property and Casualty. A business owner needs to insure the particular property the location where the business is located, as well as its contents. As an example, the unit wherever a new cupcake shop is opened should be insured, in case an individual leaves the cooker on and causes the fire, not only damaging the shop and everything inside, although accidentally killing someone as well. In that case there's Liability. Taking a look at the same cupcake shop, if a thing goes wrong with typically the cupcake mix and even a customer becomes sick from eating the cupcakes, of which customer can drag into court the shop regarding injury. Liability insurance protects the business from such cases. You will also find Commercial Automobile Insurance. When the cupcake shop's distribution van gets included in an accident, someone has to pay, right? Companies rarely run with out employees, and once employees are hired, these people come with all types of demands. Health and fitness insurance is something most employers offer for their employees. A cupcake store owner wouldn't need to have the particular head chef ill and unavailable for three weeks, unable to pay his clinic bills. There happen to be different options to acquire a business covered with insurance from all varieties of risk, but these are the most typical. Looking from all the types of business insurance, you can definitely see that will placing a business is simply not as quick as it seems. Setting up a business, even one of which was properly and thoroughly planned, remains a challenge. However lots are called to do it, and a few people are brave enough to follow their particular passions. There's risk involved, yes. It can always a gamble, nevertheless with higher chance comes the possibility of higher returns. And risk could be minimized. That's for what reason business insurance is present.

How to Use roofing companies to Get Your Home Cleaned Quick
The average home spends around $75,000 annually on bills, repairs, taxes, and other expenses. A good portion of these expenses is due to the work a plumbing company does on your home. In fact, the average home has between 12 – 15 windows that need to be cleaned per year. If you’re lucky enough to have a roofer do your plumbing work for you, this is one less expense you have to worry about. And with roofs lasting up to 20 years, there is no reason why your home shouldn’t be baby-cleaned at some point in its history. The good news is…your roof isn’t the only thing that needs to be cleaned on your home! There are several local plumbing companies that specialize in getting your home re-set and refinished, as well as other services that can help you get back on track financially. Let’s take a look at what it takes for a residential shingle roofing contractor to get your house ready for paint:
How to Use a Roofing Company to Get Your Home Cleaned Quick
The first step is to make an appointment. You can either speak to a representative or use the service. You can also call a local contractor and ask them to come to your home. If they don’t have the time or the inclination to come to your place of business, they can still do their job and make sure your home is ready for a repaint. If you want your home repainted, you can always hire a professional contractor. However, if you want your roofer to do the work, you’re out of luck. Most roofers don’t have the time or the inclination to come to your home. Plus, they are required to work on weekends and other off-hours. It’s also very likely that the homeowner isn’t willing to have their roofer work on weekends or other off-hours. That’s why you need someone who is available when you need them.
How to Find the Right Contractor for You
You’re probably going to find the best roofer for your home by doing some independent research. You can do this by looking on the internet or speaking with contractors that work in your area. Ask them about their backgrounds, experience, and work habits. You should also ask yourself this question. Do I really need this work? If the answer is yes, then go for it! But if not, then don’t worry about it. It’s not like there’s a perfect solution to all your roofing needs. Most contractors are going to make occasional adjustments as they work with various properties, but most will be able to get your house perfect no matter what else goes on it.
Their Experience and Knowledge
It’s important to remember that the best roofers glasgow are those that have experience working with residential roofs. These contractors have developed a good knowledge of the type of roofs you have, what issues they can help you with and what steps you can take to avoid future problems. They also have experience working with commercial and industrial roofs, which can help them get a much better feel for the type of work you want to be done on your home. Most homeowner associations will require a company to submit an application for a contractor and provide the homeowner with information about how the contractor is qualified, who they’re working with, and how they are qualified to work on residential roofs. This information can help you spot a potential problem before it’s too late.
How to Meet Your Home’s Needs
The next important step is to find out what services a pro can do for your home. Make sure to discuss these services with your home inspection and maintenance advisor. They can usually provide you with some insight into the services a pro can offer and what steps you need to take to make sure your home is in good shape. While it’s tempting to go with the experts, it’s actually more cost-effective and efficient to go with the simple things. Consider adding one or more of these simple things to your home’s kitchen or bathroom renovations as soon as possible: - Newer appliances and appliances with built-in ranges - Refurbish old appliances - Add a water heater or two - Newer lights, appliances, and appliances with dimmers - Add a second gourmet chipotle or papaya salsa in your kitchen - Add an outdoor fireplace with two or three burners - Refurbish and add window treatments like cascading wrought iron or pouf drapes - Add a garden or border collie or border sheep in your backyard - Refurbish or replace your existing appliances with new ones that come with remote controls and/or a remote doorbell
What Services Can a Pro Do?
There are a few different types of home services a pro can tackle on a home. He or she can investigate the needs and problems of the homeowner and work to solve them. For example, if the homeowner needs help with a plumbing problem, the plumbing pro can investigate the problem and come up with a plan to fix it. Or, the homeowner may just want professional help with maintenance. Home maintenance and kitchen renovations can often benefit from the professional services of a pro.
How Long Does It Take to Get a Home Cleaned?
The length of time it takes a home to get clean varies depending on a number of factors. If the home is new, you’re likely to get it done in a day or two. But if the house is sometimes older, it typically takes longer. It may require a month or more to get a clean home. If the work involves a lot of dirt, you can often start the process earlier, but still, have to pay for it all.
The Bottom Line
The average home spends around $75,000 annually in bills, repairs, taxes, and other expenses. A good portion of these expenses is due to the work a plumbing company does on your home. In fact, the average home has between 12 – 15 windows that need to be cleaned per year.
