My first crack at a godside yokai. The true power of mermother unleash, the first woman in all her glory, Izanami-No-Mikoto!

Mermother was always based on shinto's first woman, I just took that inspiration and amplified it! I tried to make her seem bigger and more imposing by playing with the proportions and making her antlers more pronounced.

I also draped her in Shinto bridal garb, as she was the first woman to be married in the religion's mythos(Though I will note Google wasn't showing very many decent pictures of the garb, so it may not be completely accurate. XP) and I blacked out her eyes, to give more reference to her status as a shinigami.

Izanami-no-mikoto is an S rank, water attribute of the Slippery tribe. Her devastating soultimate is called "Sensui Wave" named after the river to the underworld in Shinto myth, it wipes any enemy in its range away in its rushing water.

Dissecting Kimetsu no Yaiba

~ Zenitsu & Susano-O ~

So, I began watching Kimetsu no Yaiba because I adore yokai and mythology. It's so immensely fun for me to try identifying what yokai are being referenced in the series, since it takes place during the time period of Japan before they were classified as distinct species, instead simply being collectively labeled as "Oni".

However, while the obvious mythological parallels in the series lie within the titular Oni and their significance, I recently came to the realization that this has blinded us from the mythological references made by the human characters as well.

And it all starts with Zenitsu Agatsuma

I was recently researching the Japanese kami of storms, Susano-O, for a character when I came to this creative epiphany, if you will. Let's start by summarizing the absolute rollercoaster that is this kami epitome of an annoying little brother who grows up to be real hot shit.

Most accounts agree that after Izanagi visited Izanami in Yomi, he bathed himself and from it created several children. Amaterasu was born when he washed his right eye, Tsukuyomi from his left eye, and awkward ol' middle-child Susano-O was born when Izanagi washed his nose.

Cause ya know, that's a great way to start out life. The Nose Child.

But more upsetting than that to newly "born" Susano-O was actually the absence of his mother, Izanami. He cried and cried and threw big fits and tantrums because he missed his mother so much, something his siblings I guess couldn't really relate to. And, true to form, Susano-O continued to act out as he got older, oftentimes quarreling with perfect-child Amaterasu. Without going into too much detail, let's just say one of these fateful quarrels led to Susano-O throwing one of his Tantrums ™ and getting kicked out of Takamagahara -- a.k.a. Heaven for Gods

So while he was meandering around the mortal realm, he met a grieving old couple who requested his assistance. Turns out they've been terrorized by a monstrous 8-headed serpent called Yamata-no-Orochi who's eaten one of their 8 daughters every year. So instead of just...moving away like normal people, they ask for Susano-O's help in saving their final daughter. Susano-O, being a nice guy and all, promised he'd save her in exchange for her hand in marriage. They agreed and to protect the girl he turned her into a comb and placed her on his hair.

That's one way to handle a damsel in distress I guess.

Then he had the couple prepare a huge tub of sake, let the Orochi get so drunk it passed out, then carved it up into little pieces, discovering a sword in it's tail. Because that's totally normal. But, hey, in the end Susano-O got a pretty little wife and regained the love and approval of his family so... win-win?

Now at this point you might be wondering "How exactly does this apply to Zenitsu?"

Or maybe you're thinking "Rin, are you sane? Should I be getting you help?"

In either case just hear me out here. Susano-O is described as being wild and emotional, as well as very destructive and short-tempered. Zenitsu also displays these traits -- his reactions are overdramatic, he tends to be very emotional, and he's very quick to anger in certain circumstances.

There's also the fact that they both have lightning powers, but that's a given. As a side note, they also both have messy and odd hairstyles.

Zenitsu is always afraid of something and always animated. His emotions spike erratically and tbh...he whines a lot.

But that's fine because remember when i said Susano-O threw fits over missing his mom? Well, this is probably where the comparison of the two is most relevant -- though it's made to sound more like Susano-O is a bratty child, but if you read between the lines, it's more accurate to say that he was just... lonely. Susano-O whined for his mother because he felt left behind, alone, and scared.

If we look back to the Spider arc on Mount Natagumo we see Zenitsu feeling the exact same way, and even admitting that he feels abandoned and alone quite frequently. It's a mutual feeling the two have.

There's also the matter of Nezuko and Zenitsu's valiant determination to protect her. It's incredibly reminiscent of Susano-O's determination to protect his future wife.

So the more I research it, the more I've concluded that Zenitsu is definitely supposed to be a reference to Susano-O.

Mermother(Izanami's) S Rank yo Kai. A god-like Yo-kai that is the source of all life. As proof of that, she will tell of how she gave birth to the gods. the two gods' relationship would later be mended by the mediation of the dragon as the goddess of the afterlife.

Izanami

The Japanese Goddess of Creation and Death, The Wife/Sister of Izanagi. She is also the Mother of Kagutsuchi and Mizuhanome. Her Name means “She-Who-Invites” or “Female-Who-Invites”. The First Japanese Deities (Kunitokotachi and Amenominakanushi) created Izanagi and Izanami, only then did these two Deities create a land of their own, They even had a spear of their own covered in Jewels (Amenonuhoko) which helped them created their lands after when the Couple went to the Bridge between Land and Earth. Onogoroshima was the very first creation of their Land since it was their Home as the Two Primordial Deities created the World such as the Other Lands besides their own Island. They once had Two Children named Hiruko (who would go on to become “Ebisu”, one of the Japanese Seven Gods of Fortune) and Awashima. Both of which were deformed and weren’t really considered to be Deities. They put their first children in a Boat and set them out to Sea which petitioned the Other Gods for an answer of what they did wrong. They were told that a God should’ve been spoken first in greeting during the Marriage Ceremony. So Izanagi and Izanami went around the Pillar again, this time Izanagi was speaking first on how they met which made their Marriage finally successful. After their marriage was redone, they became the Progenitors of Many Gods that represented each aspect of Nature. They bore more islands and more deities. However, what became a huge change towards their marriage was leading into the birth of Kagutsuchi (The Japanese Fire God) as Izanami died during her Last Childbirth. After their Last Child of Fire burned his Mother to Death during pregnancy, Izanami ended up in Yomi (The Japanese Underworld that was filled with Monsters such as the Oni). Izanagi went to Yomi so he could rescue his Wife and bring her Back. When he found her, he walked closer with the Light in his hand and saw his Wife horrifying and dead. She sent out Other Evil Spirits to attack her Brother/Husband but Izanagi escaped as he blocked the Exit of Yomi. Izanami cried as she screamed since her Husband left her, that means she would’ve killed 1,000 people from the land every day. Her Brother was furious because he would’ve given life to 1,500 people. Izanami became the Goddess of the Dead and even the Queen of Yomi, thus, she never went back with her Husband after her Childbirth Death.

SBSP Universe

Lady Izanami is The Japanese Goddess of Death and Creation, the Ex-Wife of Izanagi, the Mother of Susanno, Amaterasu, and Kagutsuchi. She is the Lady of the Japanese Underworld, Yomi. She seems very Vengeful and Temperamental as she’s Heartbroken for the fact that her Husband left her in Yomi. Although Izanagi tried to have her back as she did loved him, she felt like that she was blinded by Anger due to the fact that her former beloved Izanagi didn’t listen to her dying breath after when she died of Childbirth when she gave birth to their Last Child (Kagutsuchi). Unlike Hel, she’s actually very strict in being the Lady of Yomi since she often takes care of the Japanese Evil Spirits including some of the Yokai Creatures (mostly the Oni) and mainly watches over the Dead. Yomi is downright the scariest place of all of the Underworlds as it’s much scarier compared to the Other Lords’ own Underworlds. When she gets really angry as she gets more badly-tempered, she can scream and turn her face into a horrifying skull face as if it was melted and burned horribly with dark tears tripping over while her hair grows long due to her Anger (in this case, she has prehensile hair). She and Izanagi met when they were both Young Adults as Izanagi promised to Izanami that they would make the entire world a better place. They agreed as they created new lands for each of the World and gained an Entire Clan of Gods. Izanami bore Izanagi their own Children (Susanno and Amaterasu). As the years went by, they were very much a loving Family growing up when Susanno and Amaterasu were toddlers but when Izanami got pregnant the Third Time, they were expecting a Third Sibling in their own Children’s lives but she ended up getting sick through pregnancy. When Kagutsuchi came into the World, Izanagi was overjoyed to finally have a Second Son but he didn’t notice that his wife was dying so he went to Yomi to find her. Only then, what he found in his wife was a terrifying Dead Woman with a Melting-Like Skull on her Face as Black Tears dripped down from her Face which terrified the Japanese God as Izanami sent out other Demons to attack her Husband for not realizing his Wife’s dying breathe as Izanagi closed the Underworld with a Bounder to keep the Demons out of it. Soon, the Two were now divorced as Izanagi never went back to her Family where she now had to rule over Yomi as her New Home with the Oni as her New People. Although even if she does miss her Family, her Son (Susanno) would always often visit his Mother since Susanno was a Mama’s Boy who missed Her very much. She doesn’t like Neptune and she completely despises Poseidon because of how much he reminded her of her Ex-Love. Although she does get along with Pluto and Hades, she’s not a fan of Other Non-Death Deities. She’s part of the Five Lords and Two Ladies of the Underworld. She completely despises The Flying Dutchman for how he messes around with Death. She also represents Envy due to how she’s very jealous seeing Couples who are Happy together that reminded Her and Izanagi’s Former Love. She would hate SpongeBob and his Friends but Plankton would be the only Sea Creature that she would like.

Kali

The Hindu Goddess of Doomsday, Time, and Death. One of the Wives of Shiva. In Hinduism, she is considered and depicted as a ferocious goddess in a form from Durga (The Hindu Goddess of Protection, Strength, and War). She is the First of the Ten Mahavidyas. In one of her Most Earliest Appearances is when she emerged from Shiva (The Hindu God of Destruction) as she was regarded as the ultimate manifestation of Shakti (The Primordial Cosmic Energy) and even the Mother of All Living Beings. She is stated to destroy Evil and even to protect the Innocent. In Hindu Myths, Durga was out on a War with the Matrikas fighting off the Demon (Raktabija) along with his own Minions of Other Demons. When a blood drip from Raktabija, a duplicate of Himself pops up, causing the War to be more difficult. This caused Durga to get even more angered as clones of the Demon would pop up as Durga causes Kali to appear right from her Bindi. Kali killed Raktabija and the rest of his own duplicates in order for Kali to stop the War between Devas and Asuras. The Battle was over thanks to Kali but unfortunately for Her, she couldn’t stop as she waged on a Murderspree of everything that she came across for she danced on the Dead. Shiva had to stop Kali by having himself stepped on her from the Ground of the Dead which made her instantly stop Dancing and realizing that she was dancing on her Husband’s Body who briefly calmed her.

SBSP Universe

Kali is the Hindu Goddess of Doomsday, Time, and Death. She is the Sister of Durga. She is very Insane, Crazy, and Wildly Chaotic as she loves causing Chaos of Death and Doom upon her feet whenever she walks on the Death of her Enemies. She always goes through massive murder sprees of Enemies that she always faces up when she battles through Evil. She’s not entirely evil as most people would think as she’s often over hyperactive but she can be gentle when she remains calm, especially when she’s around small critters that she adores. Kali and Shiva were once in love until she went on a killing spree of killing the sinful ones and even destroying their lands one by one, Shiva knew that Kali would be way too dangerous to have her as his wife so they had to break up only because it was best for them, especially for Kali since she never really understood on how it feels to be somebody’s lover. Much like Bastet and Sekhmet, Kali has a positive relationship with her own Sister (Durga) since Durga represented the Patience and Justice of War while Kali represented the Brutal Side of War with the Cries from each Battle. She even had to help out her Sister during the War between the Asuras and Devas as Kali had beaten up Raktabija and killed all of his Clones. She didn’t fully kill the Hindu Demon, but she had to let him go as Raktabija instantly ran away from her after the War. But after some time when Raktabija took revenge on the Devas again, Kali and Raktabija had an Epic Death-Defying battle as Kali stepped on Raktabija, forcing him to give up as Kali danced on his Body as if she won and danced her own Macabre. Shiva knew that Kali was too crazy and yet strong to fight off a Bad Guy so Shiva swooped in as Kali was accidentally stepping on him. She didn’t realize it was Shiva that she danced on, but Kali and her Sister had to patch things up after they punished Raktabija off to Naraka. She does like Neptune but she often terrifies Poseidon since he’s very afraid of her due to her chaotic nature. Though, she is nothing at all like Discordia and Eris compare to their own Chaotic Natures, Kali is very different from them. She also happens to be Best Friends with Sekhmet as the Two get along for their own War affairs together. She would also get along with Patrick as the Two would bring Chaos together upon the Sea.

ALSO this was inspired by Wasurenagumo (a short watch, only 25 minutes, very good. Please check it out). Basically it's an anime about an evil spider yokai that can turn into a beautiful woman... thingy. And things happen.

This was inspired by youtuber Mr.Buddy’s “What if Scandinavia was a pokemon region?” video. I absolutely loved it and wanted to make my own version of Japan as well. It is said its body can glow hauntingly. Regional variant of the Blaziken line that is fire/ghost. Pokemon based on Daidarabotchi, a big pokemon that, when it stands still, looks like a mountain. Pokemon based on Furi. It’s fond of eating Spinarak, Voltick and Kumo Yokai and their evolution line. It’s mostly active at night. Evolves into Satori, psychic type. Pokemon based on Furaribi, fire type. Its body is covered with fire. Pokemon based on Furutsubaki-no-rei, grass/ghost type. A demon like pokemon that wears a mask, only females. Its pre evolution is based on Ibaraki doji. Pokemon based on Harionago. It evolves into Isonade, water type. Pokemon based on Heikegani, water type. Its shell looks like the outline of the faces of different pokemon. Regional variant of Groudon based on Hiderigami, pure fire type. Pokemon based on Hone-onna, ghost type. It has a pattern of its back resembling a cartoonish, comical skeleton. When it stand on two legs and swings from side to side, it looks like the skeleton is dancing, and while it tries to be spooky, children useally find it funny. Pokemon based on Inugami, ghost type, 3rd evolution stage. It will stand loyalty by any family that adopts it. Ghost type. Its  2nd stage is based on Yama-Inu, ground type, while its 1st stage is based on Keukegen, ground type. Pokemon based on Jorogumo, bug/fire type, 3rd evolution stage. It can breathe fire, has a human skull pattern on its back, mostly female that are much larger than the males. Its 2nd stage is based on Tsuchigumo, bug/ground type while its 1st stage is based on Kumo Yokai, pure bug type. Pokemon based on Issie. It has reptile scales instead of fur. The females are very protective of their young, and if they lose them they will never stop grieving. Regional variant of the Trevenant line based on Jubokko, grass/dark type. It takes the blood of other creatures and humans. Regional variant of the Ninetales line,3 stages psychic/fairy types. The regional variant of Vulpix (based on Myōbu and Kiko) has white fur and one tail, the second stage (based on Tenko) gold fur and 4 tails, and the regional variant of Ninetales (Kūko) silver fur and 9 tails. Each stage has a blue fire ball around the tailtip of each tail, as well as a jewel on each tailtip that's covered by the fire, and is known to grant blessings related to food, farming and happiness. While the regional variant of Vulpix is said to have no additional powers, seeing one is said to bring good luck. The second stage is said to have the power of clairvoyance and being able to correctly predict the future. And the regional variant of Ninetales is said to have the power of telepathy as well as clairvoyance. All three stages are often found around spiritual/holy places. Despite resembling this regions Ninetales when it comes to apperance, it has one tail, is about the same size as a Raticate, making it very good at hiding, and it doesn't have a jewel nor a flame around its tailtip. A pokemon based one of the many extinct horses. Victory road: An island said to have been created by the region’s legendaries that is said to be first male and female pokemon to inhabit this region. The building/rooms are a cross between old fashioned temples, palaces and shrines. Almost all of the trees on the island has Shimenawa/Enclosing Rope around it, with Shide/Vertical Paper hanging from the rope, and Ema/Wooden Plaques and Furin/Wind Chimes (made with glass with flowers painted on them, and a string tied to some wood with a small glass sylinder and a piece of paper at the end that goes through it) hanging from the branches of the trees. The walls outside the building as well as the walls inside of the lobby is filled with white masks with red markings, each shaped like the head of a pokemon. Trainers can buy lucky charms on the island before facing the elite 4 and champion. Each lucky charm grant a different thing, like not getting effected by abilities, not getting effected by status conditions, recieving better aim and not for not fainting as fast.   Several groups of guards patrol the sea and the sky regularly to prevent any trainers with seven or less badges to enter the island. A ship will take trainers strong enough to the island. The island is made to strongly resemble zen gardens, to help calm the trainers and help them find their inner strenght before the battles. "Amaterasu"’s room has a old scroll on the furthest back wall with “fire” written on it in red ink, as well as a old time picture of the sun. "Ōwatatsumi/ Ryūjin"’s room has a old scroll on the furthest back wall with “power” written on it in black ink, as well as a old time picture of a all the dragon types in the region. "Ōyama-tsumi/Ohoyama-tsumi"’s room has a old scroll on the furthest back wall with “honor” written on it in black ink, as well as a old time picture of two men in old fashioned clothes fighting eachother.   "Susanoo"’s room has a old scroll on the furthest back wall with “water” written on it in blue ink, as well as a old time picture of a river. "Tsukiyomi"’s room has a old scroll on the furthest back wall with "moon" written on it in silver ink, the rest of the scrool is painted black. In each of the 4 corners of the room, in all the elite 4 members and the champion’s room, is a small shrine to each of the legendaries. Small bowls containing food can often be found on the shrines in honor of the legendary pokemon, which the elite 4 and champion pray to for guidence and for good luck in the fight, or for a challenger worthy/strong enough for them. The elite 4 members and the champion's room also have a scroll on one of the walls with pictures of their life on it, as well as a Byōbu/wind wall which hides the pathway leading to the next elite 4 members room and the doorway leading to the champion registration room. The path leading up to "Amaterasu"’s room is filled with Torri/shrine gates (red while the top and bottom are black), and as a sign of respect for the champion trainers are expected to bow before passing under each one. All these doorways also has a thick rope with a big bell attached to it on its right side, except for the bell leading the the champion registration room where the rope is attached to a log that must be pushed into the bell, giving it a different sound when the log hits it. It's customary for trainers to ring the bell using the rope, both to tell the trainer in the next room that they are coming their way, to signal the beginning of their challenge through the bell in the lobby, and to tell people in the lobby area that they have defeated the trainer/become the new champion in case of the bell on the doorway leading to the champion registration room. It is also customary for trainers to bow before going through the doorway as a sign of respect for the trainer they will be battling. The champion has a group of female trainers who looks out for and protects them. 10 of the trainers always stays at the island as long as the champion is there, challenging each trainer that comes through before they're allowed to challenge the elite 4 and the champion. Others go around the region, gathering information and bringing it back to their champion so that she always knows what's going on and where she might be needed. The other trainers in the group are dressed as sellers, preformers/actresses, regular trainers/travelers, teachers, business women/professors, law inforcement/emergency services and miko/shrine maidens, in order to get access to every place within the region. They use fire, dark and fighting types, and their symbol is the sun. Other characters: Male character based on Agyo: He's a popular dark type trainer, brother of the character based on Ungyo. Male character based on Ungyo: He's a popular fighting type trainer, brother to brother of the character based on Agyo. Male character based on Yebisu/Ebisu: He's a well known water type trainer. He uses a cane as he has struggled with his walking since birth and has some trouble hearing. Female character based on Benzaiten: A woman with many talents, she’s a known public speaker and writer (her jobs), and a talented swimmer and musician (her hobbies), has a high IQ, and her family runs a clock shop. Female character based on Inari: She owns several food and drink stands, and is often on the look-out for new places to start her business. Breeds and raises this region’s version of Vulpix, Ninetails and its second stage. Male character based on Jizo: He works as a kindergartner and helps his family out in their family owned hotel. He owns a very fancy staff which the kids loves to play with. Female character based on Kannon: She's a well known fairy type trainer. Male character based on Omoikane: He's a teacher and gives his advice in champion and elite four meetings. Male character based on Amenominakanushi: A extremely popular psychic type trainer. Male character based on Kuninotokotachi: A well known grass, ground and rock type trainer. Male character based on Seidai Myojin: A famous football and kemari player. Male character based on Toyotomi Hideyoshi: Known for the many temples he has built where he shows off old armours, weapons and other old-fashioned items, telling visitors about the life of their ancestors. Female character based on Ukemochi, a ghost type trainer who is also a chef. Male character based on Fujin, a famous flying type trainer. Brother to Raijin. Male character based on Raijin/Raiden, a famous electric type trainer. Brother to Fujin. Male character based on Sarutahiko Okami, ground type trainer. Male character based on Hachiman, a famous fighting type trainer. Male character based on Kuraokami, ice type trainer. Female character based on Toyotama: A local, non pokemon trainer. Is in a relationship with "Hoori" , and is the sister of "Tamayori". Female character based on Tamayori: A nanny on top of going to school to become a midwife. Is in a relationship with "Ugayafuki-aezu", she's a mother, and is the sister of "Toyotama". She and her partner have recently become the newest celebrities/popular gossip in their region after their kid a few weeks ago married into the Emperor family. Male character based on Ugayafuki-aezu: A priest. Is in a relationship with Tamayori and is a father. He and his partner have recently become the newest celebrities/popular gossip in their region after their kid a few weeks ago married into the Emperor family. Male character based on Ame-no-oshihomimi: Father to "Ninigino", in a relationship with "Toya-Akitsu", and is one of the two heads of the Emperor family. Female character based on Toya-Akitsu: Mother to "Ninigino", in a relationship with "Ame-no-oshihomimi", and is one of the two heads of the Emperor family. Male character based on Takagi-no-kami: A famous member of the Emperor family.   Male character based on Abe no Seimei: An extremely wise and talented pokemon trainer and battler, it's said he's the only one the champion is comfortable with taking over her potition if she suddenly has to step down or travel away for a longer periode of time. He's a pyschic type trainer, although he's also very skilled and knowledgeable with ground, fire, water, steel and grass types ,and he also used to be a pokemon ranger. It's also said that he owns the Ofuda talisman (slips of paper), that is said to be able to summon the legendaries and the mythical pokemon of this region. Other region related information: Nobori flags are placed outside each gym, showing which type that gym leader specialice in, and small pieces of square shaped fabric hanging above the entrance, showing the name of the gym leader, one letter on each squared fabric. Statues of the champion, elite 4 members and the gym leaders, all in different size and potition, are spread out on different paths throughout the region. The gym leader's statue are located on the main path that leads to the town/city their gym is, and the elite 4 members and the champion's statue are located on the path that leads from their different home towns to the shore trainers will have to go to to get to the island that the pokemon league is located on. All the gym leaders room/arena are seperated from the rest of the gym by a Shoji/Wooden Sliding Door (simple, square patterned). They celebrate festivals, called "Matsuri". The region/people hold a festival each season as thanks to the legendaries for creating the region and everything on it. The people makes little shrines homes for the legendaries's spirit to visit so that the people can carry them around different parts of the region to show the legendaries how their region is doing and as thanks to them, as they believe the legendaries lives far up in the sky to properly see everything unless they travel all the way down. Some people wears masks during the festival, dress up in old fashioned, fancy clothes, plays music, dances, lit lanters, watches fireworks and show off origami and statues/sculptures of different types of the legendaries as a way of honoring them. Many paths throughout the region have spots where different gardens decorate it. There are lots of shrines throughout the region for all the legendaries and mythicals, as well as the pokemon with the most common/popular typing. These shrines can be visited to boost the friendship between the trainer and pokemon. It’s normal to see old statues and gates deep within forest and mountain trails. The region has many tea shops and bath houses/hot springs. They work as pokemon centers when the player isn’t in a town/city. Trainers can buy items from vending machines along different roads as well as in the pokemart. The noble family is called Emperor. The family is 77 generations long so far. The most famous family members are the couple based on “Izanagi” and “Izanami”. “Izanagi” and “Izanami” have 8 kids, which includes: "Amaterasu", "Susanoo", "Tsukiyomi", "Ōwatatsumi/ Ryūjin", "Ōyama-tsumi/Ohoyama-tsumi" and "Kagu-tsuchi". However, only "Izanagi" is the biological parent of "Amaterasu", "Susanoo", "Tsukiyomi". Little is known about the other 2 as they still live with the family. They are very secretive and keep to themselves, so the only other thing known for sure to the public is that "Izanami" uses ghost and dark types, and that "Izanagi" uses dark, normal, fighting, fairy and water types. It is rumored that she has burn scars on her after Kagu-tsuchi (the 3rd oldest son) caused an accident in the kitchen while he was still young, and it’s also rumored that she almost died after the birth of their youngest child. Their home is located next to the Hiba mountain. The family lives next to Atsuta Shrine. 7 types of luck: A charity company that gives out gifts to sick kids or kids who has been in accidents. Combe: A hair salon that specialice in hairstyles for women. Kabuki: A very popular theater. 47 Ronon, 7 Samurai and 9 blades: A battle arena. Sumo and Sohei: A battle arena for humans. Those who train there are said to be as sturdy as a sword and as powerful as a thunder strike. A 7 year old’s birthday is a big deal in this region and the day is celebrated with special events. Apart from the Emperor family, there are 4 important families, called clans, in the region. Words as Sharp as a Blade: A poetry club. Popular types that are common to find and use in this region are: - Dragon types. - Psychic types. - Water types. - Rock types. - Grass types. - Fighting types.

Oh, For the Love Of!

“Mikage?” Nanami finds the Land God sitting in the parlor relaxing with a book.  “What is all the racket going on outside?”

“I believe it is Tomoe, Mizuki, and Kirihito discussing something heatedly.”

With fists clenched at her sides, “Eh!  What are they fighting about now?!”  The young woman is ready to storm out there and given them all hell.

“Oh, if I had to guess it has something to do with you my dear,” he smiles and finally looks up from his book.  “You are what those boys usually fight over.”

“Kami, I can’t even think of what it could be over right now.”

“It is the age-old question that haunts many a young man, Nanami chan.  I would leave them be if I were you.”

“Age-old question?”  Exhale, “never mind,” shaking her head, “I can’t do that, they might scare away patrons.  I’ll go tell them to stop or take it elsewhere.”

After Mikage wishes her luck and returns to his reading, Nanami stalks her way out to the front porch. She was sort of used to Tomoe and Mizuki bickering constantly for her attention but now Kirihito too?  Ugh, ever since they had saved him from Izanami in the Underworld he’s been popping up unexpectedly and she had no idea why. They weren’t friends for starters, Tomoe was starting to suspect who he truly was, but simply disliked the guy ever since he found out he had tried to kiss her.  But this was the first time he had shown up at the temple.  ‘Was he trying to sneak in and got caught?  Maybe that’s what the argument was about?’

The shouting grows louder the closer she gets to the door, yes, this needs to be stopped now for she could clearly hear the voices of Tomoe, Mizuki, and Kirihito, ‘Kurama too?’

Sliding the door open with a harsh slam, Nanami launches into a tirade of her own, pumping her fists at them.  “Are you trying to scare people away?!  What are you guys all fighting about now?!”

The three men freeze in mid fight mode, Tomoe with his hands blazing of fox fire, Mizuki suspending a stream of water from the nearby purification basin that quickly disintegrates when he hears Nanami screaming, and Kirihito with a simple tanto dagger clasped in his hand. Kurama who appears to have been trying to break it up also pauses and they all turn to look at her.  He is the first to back off as she storms her way over.

“Kirihito what are you doing here?!  Tomoe, Mizuki, you two really need to stop being at each other’s throats!”

“He started it!” They all point at each other

“I don’t care who started it!  Just stop it!”

She is so furious, that even when Kurama walks over to her she is poised to strike.  He puts his hands up, “Nanami chan, you can quickly settle this fight, all they want to know is which of them do you prefer.”

“Eh?”  She turns and looks at the three men.  “Tomoe and Mizuki fight for my attention, but Kirihito too?”

“Apparently so.”

But Kirihito steps up first, “I do not have any feelings of the sort for you.”

“Liar!” Tomoe and Mizuki cry out.  The fox yokai lighting his hand on fire again, “if that’s the case why they hell do you keep showing up wherever Nanami is?  You must be following her!”

“It is true,” the dark-haired man responds without emotion, “but I simply find her intriguing.”

Now it’s Mizuki who counters, “I don’t believe you either, you’ve tried to kiss her once, and succeeded a second time…”

Nanami stiffens, “how did you find out about that Mizuki, I-I never told anyone that part.”

“You did what!” Tomoe roars and takes a swipe at the man, “you bastard!”  Kurama and Mizuki grabbing his arms to hold him back.

“You should just leave Kirihito,” Kurama advises, “Just get out of here and don’t come back.”

“Tch,” he grins and puts his blade away, “Just remember, you can’t watch her all the time!” then disappears down the hill.  

Kurama exhales and let’s go of Tomoe along with Mizuki, “that’s one down.  He gives me the creeps too, Nanami chan, you sure know how to attract them.”

Startled, her whole body flushes at the insinuation, it’s not like she tries to gain anyone’s attentions, most of the time they seem to just gravitate to her or wants something from her and it’s frustrating.  At one point she had lumped Kurama into that pile but lately his attentions have changed.

With the girl a bit flustered now, “Nanami chan,” Mizuki takes the opportunity to get closer to her, “will you just tell Tomoe you like me better, so he’ll leave me alone.”

But Tomoe pulls her away from the graspy little snake, “Don’t touch her!” he growls, ears pinned back, “you’re just as bad as Kirihito!  First you trick her into the marriage binding then kissed Nanami when she was unconscious to force the familiar spell!  She’s just too nice to kick you out of here!”

Mizuki crosses his arms and huffs, “that is because I do love her…”

“You had barely known her!  You are just a sad, lonely, pathetic, irritating little snake!”

“Tomoe, you don’t have to pick on him either!” Nanami pulls out of his grap, but when Mizuki tries to grab her arm instead she steps away from them both.  “You two are both aggravating.”

Kurama who stood back during the latest fireworks, “Nanami, do you prefer Tomoe or Mizuki, if you just tell them it may stop the fighting.”

“I doubt it,” she rolls her eyes.

“No…” Mizuki cries out

“…Tell us the answer!” Tomoe finishes the retort and the two men look at her expectantly.

“I-I…” she puts up her hands, her face is heating up and red blotches are popping up on her cheeks, “t-this is not fair to make me say it!”

“So, you do like one of them, don’t you, Nanami chan?”  Kurama teases the girl, “it’s pretty obvious to me, I mean I see it all the time being surrounded by adoring fans.”  He holds both her arms gently, forcing her to face them.  “Look at the poor saps, they deserve to know how you feel.”

“But,” head dropping, “I don’t want to hurt one of their feelings…”  

“It’s me!” Tomoe points at Mizuki, pushing his finger into the man’s chest.

“No way, Nanami chan likes me better!” returning the gesture.

“You are dreaming snake boy, Nanami likes me more than you!”

“I don’t think so, you perverted kitsune!”

Tomoe grabs Mizuki’s yukata, “who you callin’ a pervert!”

“Okay, how about drunkard!”

“Why you little!  Nanami…  Eh,” Tomoe look to where she was just standing, “where did Nanami and Kurama go?”

“See you scared her off!”  Mizuki pushes away, huffing and running off to search for them.  “Nanami chan?!”

From a distance, high in the sky, but where they can still watch the two guys as they searched the shrine grounds, Kurama had whisked them away by her request.  “You know, eventually you should just tell Tomoe you love him.”

“I will,” she exhales, “but when I’m ready.”

He laughs, “this is why I don’t want to fall in love, it’s so much work!”

“Oh please, I know you are Ami are getting closer too!”

“I am n…  Fine, then let’s just keep these secrets between us.”

“Deal.”

Z’s new witch verse background. this’ll also cover a sub-verse where she gets reincarnated due to the Kami’s wishes and ends up becoming a spirit witch because of it.

born in a small village in Japan a few hundred years ago, Z grew up wanting nothing. being one of the few people ‘blessed’ with magical abilities, Z is almost lavished upon. she has the ability to communicate with the Gods (and unbeknown to most, spirits too), which was one of the few powers rarely seen within people, and eventually becomes a priestess because of this. only those with magical abilities (no matter what they are, whether it’s water based, floral or homely) are allowed to become priests or priestesses if they want to.

this village, however, holds a dark secret. it’s village temple is dedicated to the Kami ‘Izanami’, the Kami of creation and death. the village believed that when they were created, Izanami gave them the gift of magic to be able to live comfortably in the area, but that magic came at a price. there had to be a give and take with it. those that had these powers also tended to have unnaturally short lifespans, for many didn’t live past the age of 35. they had to make use of the powers they were given in the time they had on earth. the apparent reasoning (according to the head priests at least) was because that the powers of the deceased would go into the newborns and thus, the magical cycle would continue. 

the magic that the villages were blessed with was something. apparently, they were able to use it differently. they seemed to be able to inject it into everything they did if they wished. crops not doing well? an earth witch can channel some of their magic into the earth and you won’t have to worry about them failing! the earth surrounding your crops seems to be soaking up too much water and not doing anything for your crops? a water witch does their thing and suddenly your crops don’t need watering! your house can’t get warm in the winter? a fire witch makes sure that you never complain about being cold during the winter again! rumours spread about the wonderful things the witches in this village could do. while there were some truth to these rumours, most of it had been blown out of proportion. their powers were something else, it was simply because the knowledge had been passed down for generations. after figuring out that those born as witches were going to die young, people started recording what they knew and how to do things. this resulted in a pretty impressive library in the village, which anyone (with or without magic) could visit. it wasn’t restricted by if you had certain types of powers. this knowledge was passed through the ages and of course, people always experimented with what they could do, hence the rumours.

one year, when Z was in her late 20′s, their land started failing and thus, their crops did too. many people grew sick and started dying. the villages immediate thought was that they had angered Izanami because prior to this, they had grown rather cocky with their gifts and their knowledge of how to work them and needed to make it up to her. their village had grown and it had garnered a reputation for being allowing witches from all over to settle in, advance their knowledge, share their own with others and then leave. this had unintentionally angered Izanami because the witches that came in and out had not been ‘blessed’ in the same way those native to the village had. their lifespans were not shorter and they were able to garner knowledge she’d given to the village for nothing. not knowing what to do, but not wanting to give up so easily, the priests came up with a plan. thinking that if they would sacrifice one of their own high priests, Izanami would be pleased.

after much deliberation, Z offered herself up as a sacrifice. maybe if she died, because of her rare powers, Izanami would replenish what they had lost. one other priest, an earth witch, also offered himself. their combined powers should appease Izanami and hopefully atone for their misdeeds. so, Z died a couple of days later. Izanami took pity of the young woman. she saw potential in Z and so, was brought back as a Yokai. because of Izanami’s appearance (think a decomposing corpse basically), Z’s entire left side is skeletal. she can’t change that when she’s in her human form, but Izanami did grant her the ability to shapeshift. namely, into a fox.

when she started approaching the village, not realising her new appearance, she was approached by a child before entering the village. the child, seeing her half skeletal face, runs off screaming. Z’s obviously very taken aback by this and finds a puddle of water nearby. looking into it, she finds out why. it’s then that Izanami comes to her and tells her what’s going on, the fact that she can shape shift but she is bound to the land the village is on until Izanami decides otherwise. the Kami tells the young woman that she will watch over the village and help the Kami with deciding life and death. there’s not much else that Z can do but to agree to this.

a few days after the sacrifices, Izanami comes to the Head Priests and tells them that their land will be fine, but their attitude needs to change. she doesn’t appreciate the fact that people can come in and out and not face the consequences. the Head Priests notes this and vows to change their ways.

Z watches. she brings medicine when needed (especially to children, she has a soft spot for them), she provides help with crops, with good births and with funerals. the villages suspect that their Kami’s words were right. they are being watched over. that was hard for them to take as well, especially since Z could shapeshift into a fox. if she was ever mistreated, a family member of the individual who wronged Z would die. the villages learned soon enough not to mess with the fox that seemed to wander the village. those that did would be in trouble. 

she was left offerings, alongside Izanami. witches & wizards were still born into the village and so that was why the temple remained. however, they started to noticed that instead of every baby having a change of being born with powers, it was certain families. in modern times, if one traced these back, you could see a generational thing start to happen.

the village prospered. it started out slow at first, the villagers barely noticed it. but after about 100 to 150 years, people noticed. their crops were always the best. their children rarely got sick and died and if they ever got badly sick, medicine would always arrive at their doorstep. mothers giving birth had little complications, though that’s not to say that some didn’t. their funerals always had sunny weather and went without a hitch. there would always be flowers around their graves. unbeknown to them, this was mainly because of Z, but nobody remembers her or would attribute their good fortune to the girl they sacrificed long ago. but, while the village itself noticed, so did a neighbouring one. and they grew jealous.

a couple of scouts were sent out and report back. what they saw made them attack. there was talk of a magical fox, sent from the Kami, to aid the village and the neighbouring village wanted that. Z’s village lost the fight and was subsequently wiped out, despite their witches best efforts. the weapons the other village had were superior. 

however, Izanami never drew Z back to her and Z was left to wander the ruins of her village. sometimes, if a passerby comes past, they might see the shape of a fox or a woman wandering the ruins. most don’t think too much of it. anyone that tries to remove the ruins of the village or build on it seemingly gets ‘cursed’. they die, they get injured, their equipment keeps going missing or getting destroyed, that sort of thing. and so, the land gets left alone. 

now, the sub-verse for this can come where Z is given a proper body by Izanami. she is given her spirit powers back and communication with the dead. however, doing it too much drains her and for a few seconds, one might be able to see the glimmer of a skeleton on her left side. so, when she does offer her services as someone who can communicate with spirits, she does it will a veil on. because if she does use too much energy, people won’t get freaked out. she’s learned to create things to keep the spirits quelled (much like her ancestors did with her and Izanami), but more modern versions of it. 

after getting her new found freedom, she wanders round Japan for a little bit before settling down at a temple. her spirit magic is quickly recognised and utilised and she even gets offered a unique job because of it. people are always requesting her to talk to their dead relative or friend or how to quell the Yokai that might be in their home.
