June 23, 1997 — Malcolm X's widow Betty Shabazz passed away today 🕊️
Born Betty Dean Sanders, she was an educator, civil rights advocate and the wife of Malcolm X.
Dr. Shabazz grew up in Detroit, Michigan, where her foster parents largely sheltered her from racism. She attended the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, where she had her first encounters with racism. Unhappy with the situation in Alabama, she moved to New York City, where she became a nurse.
It was in New York that she met Malcolm X. The couple married in 1958.
Along with her husband, Dr. Shabazz left the Nation of Islam in 1964. She witnessed his assassination the following year.
MEMORIALS:
•In late 1997, the Community Healthcare Network renamed one of its Brooklyn, New York, clinics the Dr. Betty Shabazz Health Center, in honor of Shabazz.
•The Betty Shabazz International Charter School was founded in Chicago, Illinois, in 1998 and named in her honor.
•In 2005, Columbia University announced the opening of the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center. The memorial is located in the Audubon Ballroom, where Malcolm X was assassinated.
•In March 2012, New York City co-named Broadway at the corner of West 165th Street, the corner in front of the Audubon Ballroom, Betty Shabazz Way.
PORTRAYALS IN FILM:

Lieutenant Governor Mark Keith Robinson (August 18, 1968) is a politician who has served as the 35th lieutenant governor of North Carolina since 2021. He is the first African American to hold the office of lieutenant governor in North Carolina. He is the Republican nominee for Governor of North Carolina in the 2024 election.
He promoted conspiracy theories, including Holocaust denial, and has often made inflammatory anti-LGBT, antisemitic, and Islamophobic statements.
He was born in Greensboro, as the ninth of ten children. He and his siblings lived in foster care for part of their childhood, before moving back in with their mother, who worked as a custodian. After graduating from Grimsley High School, he served in the Army Reserve, attended North Carolina A&T State University, and worked at several furniture factories in the Triad region. He took history classes at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, to secure a degree and become a history teacher.
He married Yolanda Hill (1990). They have two children. He identifies as an evangelical Christian and has been invited to preach at congregations.
In a 2012 social media post, he acknowledged that in 1989, he paid for a woman that he impregnated to get an abortion. He said the woman in question was his wife, Yolanda.
He had filed for bankruptcy on three occasions. He has been sued several times for nonpayment of debts. In 2012, his landlord sued him for failure to pay around $2,000 in rent; the landlord filed for summary ejectment (eviction).
According to court records, he did not pay seven years of federal income tax and had tax liens placed on him by the IRS as recently as 2012. He said in 2020 that his issues with the IRS had been resolved.
In 2022, he told WRAL in an interview, “I don’t have any unpaid taxes.” After the television station revealed that he owed several hundred dollars to Guilford County in five delinquent vehicle tax bills, he paid off the tax debt. He said he was unaware that he had unpaid vehicle tax, adding: “I’m not very good at math.” #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
