History of faeries

When you hear the word ‘fairy’ you would most probably think of small innocent mystical beings with beautiful butterfly-like wings with Mushrooms, cottages and potions.

Well.. the truth is a bit far from that

Quick recap of faeries

The word ‘Fairy’ begins from latin roots ‘fata’ meaning ‘fate’. According to latin mythology, beautiful women who possessed supernatural powers would appear in homes which babies were born in to decide the newborns fate then fly away, but many cultures have different names, origins and concept of faeries (such is fae, Goblin, leprechaun, nymphs etc)

The (supposed) True Origin of Faeries

it is said that faerie’s ‘true’ origin is from greek mythology, it is not all that surprising since greek mythology had caused many other supernatural creatures like faeries or Centaurs.  But Faeries were not called faeries in greek mythology they called were called as ‘nymphs’. In greek mythology there were many gods and goddesses that created this world they also created living beings (such as men and women) they also created nymphs,(pronounced ‘nymf’) they made earth nymphs, water nymphs, fire nypmhs etc they also made masculine form of nymphs known as satyr, These beings had the will to do good and bad.

The ‘fallen Angels’

In the 13th century, The concept of faeries gained popularity in England when Gervase of Tilbury (who is a canon lawyer, statesman and cleric) wrote about faeries in one of his books called Otia Imperialia. He travelled around the world and mentioned seeing creatures, refering them as faeries some were tall or short, beautiful or ugly, good and sometimes evil.

But, The british concept of faeries were much more haunting then in Gervases’s book. The british feared faeries a lot because they believed that faeries were mishchevious and evil creatures that had the power to curse them. The british preferred to call the faeries as ‘little people, the gentrys or the neighbors’ in fright of summoning faeries to there houses. The people believed faeries lived underground, deep within the woods or near water areas. The civilians wanted to avoid such paths that were notorious for fairy residence they cut the corners of the houses to prevent blocking the fairy pathway.

But with time, cultural mythologies began mixing with religion and faeries were then known as ‘fallen angels’ People believed that god threw them out of heaven because of there pride and ego, much like lucifer. Faeries then had a reputation that ‘they were not bad enough for hell but not good enough for heaven’

Faeries belonged to a superior race

In Irish Mythology, Faeries are magical creatures that belong to ‘Tuatha De Dannan’ a highly developed race for gods and goddesses. Historian report that people who belonged to Tuatha De Dannan were tall in size and there bodies glowed. Tuatha De Dannan famously disappeared into the otherworld after losing a war for Ireland. But they would often come in disguise as humans.

‘Real’ life encounters with faeries

In 1917, 2 cousin sisters Frances Griffith and Elsie Wright, Captures 5 photos of faeries after there parents had refused to believe that they had seen faeries. The little girls went to cottingley beck in west Yorshire in where they claimed to have seen Faeries. But in 1578 it was debunked in the musuem of woodwork that James Randi found the pictures fake as they looked identical to the faeries in a book called Princess Mary’s gift book that was published in 1915. Elsie Wright then came out and said that they cut out the fairy pictures and taking pictures with them but Frances denied it and said the 5th photograph was a real fairy. Both girls stayed with there statment and emphasized they had seen faeries.

Do Faeries really exist?

This is the million dollar question and well.. with the advancement of society, a few people today believe in the myths and folklore of faeries. Religion and culture still support the idea of faeries. the detailed research in physics show that electromagnetic matter exists, which could conclude ghosts and faeries unseen by the human eye. so we really dont know, not yet atleast

And Additionally for extra information (and because its my first post-) In greek mythology there were creatures which were of half birds and half women, These creatures are now known famously as Sirens. Sirens had a beautiful voice in which they used to sing and attract sailors, but unfortunately the sailors were too intoxicated by the voices they hadnt noticed where they were sailing and crashed and drowned to death.
