Plane (2023)
🎬A pilot finds himself caught in a war zone after he's forced to land his commercial aircraft during a terrible storm.
📝A very entertaining old school survival thriller. I really enjoyed it. It is exactly what it says it's on the tin, it doesn't pretend to be anything other than a good old school thriller. I recommend it.

Plane (2023)
This is a Movie Health Community evaluation. It is intended to inform people of potential health hazards in movies and does not reflect the quality of the film itself. The information presented here has not been reviewed by any medical professionals.
Plane has an extended sequence of aircraft turbulence and peril that uses nearly-constant strobe effects related to flickering lights and lightning. Machine guns are used in daylight late in the film.
Almost all of the camera work in this film is handheld, with violent shaking during intense scenes.
Flashing Lights: 7/10. Motion Sickness: 7/10.
TRIGGER WARNING: Innocent people are murdered in this film. There is a scene that simulates a loud, very high-pitched ringing in the ears as a result of a loud noise.

Plane (2023, dir. Jean-François Richet) - review by Rookie-Critic
Tumblr media
I may not outwardly rave about them as much, but I am a fan of action films. When they're done right they can be some of the most purely entertaining films around. Joe Carnahan's Copshop made my top 20 films of 2021 and it was one of the most welcome surprises of the year. So, when I first saw the trailer for Plane, a trailer that, every time it played before another film in the theater, everyone around me would scoff at or say, "Well, that'll suck," I tried not to just dismiss it outright. In fact, I was secretly hoping it'd be great. After all, Gerard Butler (who starred in Copshop) was playing the protagonist and, almost even more enticing than Butler, Mike Colter plays the main supporting character. I loved season 1 of the Marvel/Netflix Luke Cage show (even season 2 had its moments), and was excited to see Colter getting a chance to show everyone what he's got on the big screen. With all that in mind, I went into Plane with an open mind, ready to be tossed into a wild 1 hour and 47 minute ride. I must say, I was not disappointed.
Now, I'm not gonna sit here and say that it's as good as those movies mentioned above, because it isn't, not by a long shot. What it is, however, is incredibly entertaining. Maybe a little slow to get to the good stuff, but still good. Sure, the characters have practically no personality and their motivations are the same overwrought, clichéd, and tired beats that have plagued movies like this since the dawn of movies like this, but honestly who cares! I'm not here for that. I'm glad they've made some effort to give a sense of story and stakes to the movie, but ultimately that is not what's important to me at all when I walk into Plane starring Gerard Butler and Mike Colter. I'm here to see the Plane go down, I'm here to see Gerard Butler fist fight a man to the death, I'm here to see Mike Colter hit someone with a sledgehammer so hard they're flung, like, 30 feet through the air. Who cares about Gerard Butler getting back to his daughter? Who cares if we don't give every single passenger on the plane a unique and interesting backstory and character development? We're here to see action, and Plane delivers, plain (no pun intended) and simple. I'm not insinuating that action films can't rise above the trappings and deliver something truly unique and wonderful (see aforementioned examples above). If they have something that makes them feel like more than just a piece of entertainment, then by all means, I'm down for that, too, but it's not a requirement of the form. There's a decent chance that it's also just personal bias. Something about seeing well-done action in a movie that taps into my monkey brain and makes me smile, makes me burst out laughing when something absolutely buckwild happens, not because it's poorly done or looks dumb or anything, but just because I'm having so much fun at the theater, and ultimately isn't that the ideal popcorn film experience? To each their own, of course, but I think that Plane did exactly what it set out to do, and I respect the hell out of it.
Score: 7/10
Currently only in theaters.

Plane - Movie Review
TL;DR – Not the biggest or most bombastic action film I have seen, but it knows precisely what it wants to be and makes it work because of that. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 3.5 out of 5. Post-Credit Scene – There is no post-credit sceneDisclosure – I paid for the Amazon Prime service that viewed this film. Plane Review – For a long time, if you went to watch a Gerard Butler action film, you knew entirely…

Emily watches "Plane"
Tumblr media
Today I am reviewing Mike Colter's Plane. It is a horrible title for a movie. Just "Plane." Maybe it's a pun on Plain? Am I giving them too much credit?
I say it's a Mike Colter movie and technically it is billed as Gerard Butler movie but I wanted to see it because I love Mike Colter. He's Luke Cage. And I loved that shit. He was in Girl's Trip (I saw that for him and was bummed). Some other stuff. I know he's on Evil but I haven't seen it.
That's all I knew about it. Hadn't seen the trailer. I just saw the poster and I was like, "It's a movie about Gerald Butler and Mike Colter kicking ass on a plane? I am in."
Because the title says "plane" so I thought the whole thing was on a plane, right?
NOT THE CASE. They crash into a island pretty quickly. So it should be called Plane then Island.
But it doesn't matter because apparently this amazing work of cinema did well enough to get a sequel starring Mike Colter (!) for reals this time and it's just called "Ship."
We're going to have a whole series of movies called Plane, Ship, Train, Car, Bicycle, Fuck what other vehicles are there? And I am going to watch them all so long as Mike Colter continues to be in them.
Because I want Mike Colter to be a big star so Marvel has to bring him back. That was my thought when I first heard of this, like "Well I need to give Mike Colter money."
But the movie is also pretty good! Review below
I mean, I like action movies even if they are dumb, so I thought this might be like. Gerard Butler has been in some ones that are dumb but I watch anyway. That's what I thought this would be. (Like a Con Air.)
But there are actual parts that are quite intense. And someone read a flight manual because it's a lot about how planes work.
The beginning intro where he talks to his daughter on the phone is very poorly written and stiff. But Butler is selling the emotion of being a Scottish Dad of an American Teenager who is in Hawaii with her Aunt and he is a pilot flying from the Philippines and he wants to see her to be together on New Year's Day (because that's when dads and teen girls bond, everyone knows that.).
He also gets to say crap about the British so even though he's the kind of commercial airline pilot who makes jokes over the intercom, I like him. There's a lot of long shots of him just having to do stuff he doesn't want to. Like he has to kill a guy for the first time and it's a long sequence of just grappling, not cool choreography.
Mike Colter is a convict who is being transported on a commercial airline? That seems unsafe. Again, I have seen Con Air. At first, I think this is racist. (Why does the Black guy have to be a convict?) And I worry Mike Colter is going to be the bad guy, which would bum me out big time since I know he is Luke Cage.
BUT NO! The Villain is corporate America because the "money guy" of the airline says it would cost to much for them to fly around a storm (???) so they are hit by lighting and all the electronics go dead (because of reasons) and Gerard Butler knows he has to land the plane in 10 minutes because of some battery (again it's because of reasons).
There's 10 minutes of plane drama that is legitimately very scary to me as someone who has been on a plane and would like to go places in the future.
They crash the plane on an unknown island that is run by, I quote, "Separatists" (separate from where?) and "criminals". They cast with Asian actors and also guys who look Hispanic but supposed to be Filipino, I think? I don't know. It's just evil guy island! [Screenwriting note: It should've been all the guys from Con Air!]
The Evil Guy Islanders kidnap all the other crew and passengers except Mike Colter and Gerard Butler, because they are manly men.
And it turns out Mike Colter is a former French Foreign Legion soldier so he seems to know more about the Bad Guys than Gerard Butler so they have to save the hostages and stuff.
There's also a lot of stuff about corporate fixers trying to find the plane but honestly any scenes where Gerard Butler and Mike Colter aren't on screen are iffy. Because it depends on the acting abilities of the various bit players to sell rough dialogue.
Some of them do very well. But some of them do not. But overall more emotional and grounded (pardon the pun) than I expected.
ETA: I just learned from Wikipedia that the Filipino government has protested this film because it is said to take place on a real island in the Philippines. I just assumed it was fake. They think this will hurt their tourism. So trigger warning for bad portrayal of the Philippines. But honestly, if Mike Colter might be there, I'd go.

'Plane' Stars Daniela Pineda and Remi Adeleke Discuss the Film’s Depiction of Filipinos
Plane hit theaters this past weekend. And if you’re interested to see what we thought of the film, feel free to check out our review here. While it’s no surprise that I’m personally not the movie’s biggest supporter, I do still admire the talent and work of its stars, and was given the opportunity to speak with Daniela Pineda and Remi Adeleke about the movie. The Mosley Review: Plane
Tumblr media
Is it just me or has it been a long time since we’ve had an action thriller or comedy set in or around a plane? I remember growing up we had a variety of airplane films that are now classics like Air Force One, Passenger 57, Hot Shots and Six Days Seven Nights. I guess nowadays it seems less likely a chance for us to get more films like those because of the tragedy of 9/11 which is fair. I just miss those type of 90's films that were just fun and the last film I can think of that actually scratched that itch was the greatly underrated film Non-Stop. Now comes this film which wasn't looking to reinvent or revolutionise the genre of aviation films. Instead, it wanted to give you the same type of thrills and action of the aforementioned films and it delivered on that promise.
Tumblr media
Gerard Butler has always been a great leading man and in this film he shows why he is still great to watch as Captain Brodie Torrance. He was so charismatic and I genuinely was rooting for him to succeed in protecting his passengers and surviving this ordeal. He may have truly gotten lucky in a number of scenes, but he handled himself so well and you feel the pain and stress after his first major and awesome fight scene. Yoson An was great as his co-pilot Samuel Dele and I loved their chemistry. Samuel was a young and eager pilot and I loved that he found his courage throughout the film. Daniella Pineda was good as the head flight attendant Bonnie. She was strong in the film and didn't panic nearly as much as past versions of the character type. All three of them truly felt like a team and I loved their dynamic. Mike Colter was fun as the international criminal Louis Gaspare. His past is touched on just enough to not be overly explained and enough to explain why he is the most qualified to be the "action hero" of the film. He was awesome in so many scenes and even though he was always out for himself, he still had a decent moral compass. Brodie and Louis had the most to do together throughout the film and it was great to see them work together.
Tumblr media
The score by Marco Beltrami and Marcus Trumpp was serviceable and kept you on the edge of your seat in the best way in the latter half of the film. The action was surprisingly great and the first major fight scene was realistic, brutal and well shot. I appreciated that this film kept the camera steady where most would shake the hell out of it. In the end, there were so many things that could've gone wrong with over stretching the pace or trying to be more than what this film was and I'm glad they didn't try to do any of that. This was a perfect popcorn fueled thriller that harkens back to the 90's aviation thrillers that I love and the very definition of pure entertainment. Let me know what you thought of the film or my review in the comments below. Thanks for reading!
