Bus Stop, 2007

It’s a sunny day in Staten Island A place I have never felt at home

I am in Port Richmond waiting for the S40 bus I am wearing baggy clothing and a mohawk 

Time wasn’t a matter of my concern Until three preadolescent Black boys approached me

Two were on bikes, one on foot They began to throw glass bottles within feet of me

I was 18 years old and felt fear rushing through me They began to inquire about my gender and why I was present

I took in a deep breath and rejected the notion of harm I began to address their lack of understanding with humor

For the kid who was chubby, I asked if he’d care for fat jokes By a girl he fancied, he promptly stated that would be unkind

I then asked why would my queer essence be demeaned  Why did they approach with such angst and intimidation? 

They admitted to being confused and wary if I were a boy or a girl I told these young boys, I am a person who deserves to feel safe

As they deserve to be loved and protected They had dismounted from their bikes, all were standing

We began to speak about school and learning and dreams By the time I looked up, my bus had arrived

These young men asked when I’d return I smiled and asked that they stay safe

Ignorance is a contagion and love is an antidote I sat happily upon that bus, heart rushing

Knowing that encounter could have been such a tragedy But spirit loves alchemy
