'Some five years after it was announced, Andrew Scott’s take on infamously charming fictional sociopath Tom Ripley is finally coming to our screens.
Based loosely on the 1955 novel by Patricia Highsmith – which was also adapted into an acclaimed 1999 film – it tells the story of a con artist who swindles his way into the high life by befriending wealthy socialite Dickie Greenleaf.
The show boasts a star-studded cast and a plot with plenty of hairpin twists and turns – as well as being shot in classy black and white. Here’s our breakdown of who’s playing whom...
Andrew Scott as Thomas "Tom" Ripley
Andrew Scott plays the talented Mr Ripley of the show’s title. A small-time confidence trickster who’s struggling to make ends meet in New York City, Ripley’s luck turns when he’s approached by businessman Herbert Greenleaf.
Greenleaf’s son Dickie has fled to Italy to avoid joining the family business and Ripley (who says he’s an acquaintance of Dickie) is charged with bringing him back. This doesn’t go entirely to plan, and Ripley soon yearns for Dickie’s lifestyle.
Scott himself is an established star on both sides of the Atlantic. Born in Dublin in 1976, he balanced school with weekend acting classes, and appeared in his first time role – in the film Korea – at the age of 17. He moved to London five years later and from there worked his way through a variety of smaller roles.
His breakthrough into the mainstream was as the villainous, scenery-chewing Jim Moriarty in the BBC’s Sherlock, opposite Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock Holmes in 2010. Ever since then he’s been a mainstay on our screens – as Fleabag’s Hot Priest, in Black Mirror, and most recently in romantic drama All Of Us Strangers opposite Paul Mescal.
Now, he’s in Ripley. "You don't play the opinions, the previous attitudes that people might have about Tom Ripley,” he’s said about the role. “I have to have the courage to create our own version and my own understanding of the character... It was a heavy part to play. I found it mentally and physically really hard.”
Johnny Flynn as Richard "Dickie" Greenleaf
The easy-going Dickie is the son of a shipping magnate and tremendously rich. He has also fled to Italy with the aim of avoiding family responsibilities – and Ripley is hired to bring him back home.
Flynn himself is both an actor and a singer-songwriter (he plays in a band, Johnny Flynn & The Sussex Wit). Born in 1983 in Johannesburg, he won a music scholarship first to Pilgrims School in Winchester and then to Bedales. He was one of Screen International’s Stars of Tomorrow in 2005, and broke through in Channel 4’s romcom series Love Sick as the main character, Dylan.
Since then, he’s appeared in films such as 2020’s Emma (in which he played Mr Knightley opposite Anya Taylor-Joy’s Emma) and as the young Nicholas Wynton in 2023 film One Life.
Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood
Marge is Dickie’s friend, who becomes romantically involved with him as their Italian holiday progresses. When Ripley appears on the scene, she quickly becomes suspicious of him.
Fanning has been acting since the age of five. Born in Georgia to a tennis player and a baseball player, she started off in small plays before appearing in NBC medical drama ER as a car accident victim with leukaemia. Two years later, she became the youngest ever person to be nominated for a SAG Award for her work in 2001 film I Am Sam.
Over the years, she’s appeared in films including The Secret Life of Bees, War of the Worlds and even in the Twilight saga as vampire Jane.
Eliot Sumner as Eddie Miles
Eddie is Dickie’s close friend, who arrives in Italy shortly after Ripley does and stays at his Italian villa. The pair rapidly develop a strong disliking of each other.
Sumner is an English songwriter and actor. Born in Italy in 1990, they are the child of Sting and Trudie Styler and grew up on the family’s estate near Stonehenge. The family gave Sumner their first guitar at four or five, and they wrote their first song at 13, before signing a record deal with Island Records at the age of 17.
Their first band, I Blame Coco, released their debut album in 2010 (Coco was Sumner’s nickname growing up). Since then, they’ve also ventured into acting, most recently appearing in Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series The Gentlemen.
Maurizio Lombardi as Inspector Pietro Ravini
Not much is known about Lombardi’s character, but given his title, we can assume he’s part of the Italian police squad who set about investigating Ripley’s actions as the drama unfolds. No spoilers here, but things are set to get messy.
Lombardi himself is an Italian acting legend. Born in 1973, he decided to become an actor after reading The Count of Monte Cristo aged 14. Since then, he’s appeared in 2016 show The Young Pope with Jude Law, 2020’s The New Pope opposite John Malkovich and Italian crime series Monterossi.
Francesca Romana Bergamo as Ermelinda
Ermelinda is Dickie Greenleaf’s housekeeper and cook at his private home. In the book, this is in Mongibello (a made up town on the coast); the TV series hints at Rome.
Neapolitan actress Francesca Bergamo has, up until now, mainly appeared in Italian language shows. Educated at the San Carlo di Napoli theatre, her main roles have included films such as Il ricordo di una lacrima (2015), Ivan e il suo strano tempo (2013) and Il ballo dei pomodori (2016).
John Malkovich as TBC
What role will the multi-talented John Malkovich be playing? So far, it has been kept under wraps, but the addition of Malkovich – who himself has played Ripley in 2002’s Ripley’s Game – is sure to spice up the show. He almost requires no introduction, but we’ll give him one anyway: born in Illinois in 1953, he made his start in 1976 when he joined the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago.
From there, he went on to appear in films such as Empire of the Sun (1987), Of Mice and Men (1992), Being John Malkovich (1999) and even the first Johnny English film in 2003. He’s dabbled in fashion (he set up his own fashion company, Mrs Mudd, in 2002) and has been an artistic muse (in 2014, photographer Sandro Muller released an exhibition of 35 iconic portraits of the actor).
Margherita Buy as TBC
Italian actress Margherita Buy has a career spanning decades. A native of Rome, she was born in 1962 and broke through in Duccio Tessari's Una grande storia d'amore (1986). She’s gone on to appear in numerous Italian-language films and TV shows – and is best known for Mia madre (2015), The Ignorant Fairies (2001) and Days and Clouds (2007).
Ripley airs on Netflix from April 4'

Child’s Play: The Juvenile Academy Award By Jessica Pickens
Tumblr media
It can feel a little awkward when a child is told they did a better job at work than an adult. That was the case with the Academy Awards at least. At 9 years old, Jackie Cooper was the first child nominated for a Best Actor at the 4th Annual Academy Awards. Nominated for SKIPPY (’31), Cooper was competing against Richard Dix, Fredric March, Adolphe Menjou and Lionel Barrymore. It was Barrymore who took home the award that night for his performance in A FREE SOUL (‘31).
Three years later, 6-year-old Shirley Temple looked like a serious contender for a Best Actress nomination at the 7th Academy Awards. This same year, there was heartburn that Bette Davis hadn’t received an official nomination for OF HUMAN BONDAGE (’34). As a compromise, Temple’s autobiography notes that a special Juvenile Academy Award was created, “In grateful recognition of her outstanding contribution to screen entertainment during the year 1934.” Claudette Colbert took home the Best Actress award that year for IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT.
The juvenile statue awarded to the young actors was half the size of the regular Academy Award; standing about seven inches tall. Temple was the first to receive an award that was presented 10 times to 12 honorees over the next 26 years. The juveniles ranged in ages 6 to 18.
Shirley Temple, 1934 at the 7th Annual Academy Awards
Tumblr media
As Temple sat bored at the Academy Awards, she was surprised to hear her name announced during the ceremony. Host and humorist Irvin S. Cobb called her “one giant among the troupers.” As she grabbed her miniature-sized award, she asked, “Mommy may we go home now?” according to her autobiography. “You all aren’t old enough to know what all this is about,” Cobb told Temple. Shirley’s mother told her that she received the award for “quantity, not quality,” because Temple starred in seven films in 1934.
In 1985, Temple received a full-sized award, as she felt the juvenile actors deserved a regulation-sized award like everyone else, according to Claude Jarman, Jr.’s autobiography.
Mickey Rooney and Deanna Durbin, 1938 at the 11th Annual Academy Awards:
The second time the special award was presented was to two juvenile actors: Mickey Rooney, 18, and Deanna Durbin, 17. They received the award for “their significant contribution in bringing to the screen the spirit and personification of youth and as juvenile players setting a high standard of ability and achievement.”
“Whatever that meant,” Rooney commented in his autobiography on the award.
This was Durbin’s only recognition from the Academy. The following year, Rooney received his first adult nomination for BABES IN ARMS (’39). In total, he received four other competitive awards as an adult, and received one Honorary Award in 1983 in recognition of “50 years of versatility in a variety of memorable film performances.”
Judy Garland, 1939 at the 12th Annual Academy Awards:
Tumblr media
Judy Garland, 17, was presented her Juvenile Academy Award by her frequent co-star Mickey Rooney. Garland received her award for “her outstanding performance as a screen juvenile during the past year” for her performances in BABES IN ARMS (’39) and THE WIZARD OF OZ (’39). Garland wouldn’t be recognized with a nomination by the Academy again until her 1954 performance in A STAR IS BORN. Garland reported losing the Juvenile Award in 1958, and it was replaced by the Academy at her own expense.
Margaret O’Brien, 1944 at the 17th Annual Academy Awards
Margaret O’Brien, 7, received the Juvenile Academy Award “for outstanding child actress of 1944” for the film MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS (’44). When Margaret O’Brien received her Oscar, she said she wasn’t really that interested in it at the time. “I was more excited about seeing Bob Hope. I was more interested in meeting him than the Oscar that night,” she said, quoted by her biographer.
In 1958, O’Brien’s award was lost. Her housekeeper, Gladys, took the Juvenile Academy Award home to polish and didn’t return. A short time after, Gladys was put in the hospital for a heart condition and the award was forgotten. When Margaret reached out later about the award, the maid had moved, according to her biographer.
Nearly 40 years later, two baseball memorabilia collectors — Steve Meimand and Mark Nash— returned the award to O’Brien in 1995. The men had bought it at a swap meet in Pasadena, according to a Feb. 9, 1995, news brief in the Lodi New-Sentinel. “I never thought it would be returned,” she said in 1995. “I had looked for it for so many years in the same type of places where it was found.” In 2001, O’Brien donated her Oscar to the Sacramento AIDS Foundation.
Peggy Ann Garner, 1945 at the 18th Annual Academy Awards
Tumblr media
After appearing in films since 1938, Peggy Ann Garner’s breakout role was in the film adaptation of A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN (’45). That year at the Academy Awards, 14-year-old Garner was recognized with the Juvenile Award “for the outstanding child actress of 1945.” It was an unexpected honor for Garner, who was confused why she was asked to sit in an aisle seat. She thought it was a mistake when her name was announced, according to Dickie Moore’s book on child actors.
Claude Jarman Jr., 1946 at the 19th Annual Academy Awards
Claude Jarman Jr. was plucked from his home in Knoxville, Tenn. and thrust into stardom when director Clarence Brown selected him for the lead role in THE YEARLING (’46). Jarman wrote in his autobiography that he gave a brief speech saying it was a thrilling moment and “This is about the most exciting thing that can happen to anybody.” However, later admitted that at age 12 the significance of the award escaped him. Following Shirley Temple’s example, Jarman also later received a full-sized Academy Award.
Ivan Jandl, 1948 at the 21st Annual Academy Awards

Ivan Jandl received the Juvenile Academy Award in his only American film, making him the first Czech actor to receive an Academy Award. At age 12, Jandl was recognized for his “outstanding juvenile performance of 1948 in THE SEARCH (’48).” The film was one of only five films Jandl starred in. Jandl was not permitted by the Czechoslovakia government to travel to the United States to accept his award, which was accepted on his behalf by Fred Zinnemann, who directed THE SEARCH.
Bobby Driscoll, 1949 at the 22nd Annual Academy Awards
Bobby Driscoll received the award for “the outstanding juvenile actor of 1949” after appearing in the film-noir THE WINDOW (’49), as well as his performance in the Disney film SO DEAR TO MY HEART (’48). “I’ve never been so thrilled in my life,” 13-year-old Driscoll said when he accepted the award.
Jon Whiteley and Vincent Winter, 1954 at the 27th Annual Academy Awards
Scottish actors Jon Whiteley, 10, and Vincent Winter, 7, co-starred as brothers in THE LITTLE KIDNAPPERS (’53). The co-stars were awarded for their “outstanding juvenile performances in The Little Kidnappers.” Whiteley’s parents wouldn’t let him attend the award’s ceremony, so it was mailed to him. "I remember when it arrived, hearing it was supposed to be something special, I opened the box and I was very disappointed. I thought it was an ugly statue," Whiteley said in a 2014 interview.
Vincent Winter was also not present for the award, so Tommy Rettig accepted the award on behalf of both actors.
Hayley Mills, 1960 at the 33rd Annual Academy Awards
Tumblr media
The last Juvenile Academy Award was award to Hayley Mills, 14, in 1960 for her role in POLLYANNA (’60). The award was presented by the first winner of the Juvenile Award, Shirley Temple. Mills was unable to attend, and it was accepted on her behalf by fellow Disney star Annette Funicello.
In a 2018 interview, Mills said she didn’t know she had received it until it arrived at her home. Mills was in boarding school in England at the time of the ceremony. “I didn’t know anything about it until it turned up. Like, ‘Oh, that’s sweet. What’s that?’ I was told, ‘Well, this is a very special award,’ but it was quite a few years before I began to appreciate what I had,” she said in a 2018 interview.
The Aftermath
Throughout the tenure of the honorary Juvenile Academy Award, other children were still occasionally nominated, including Bonita Granville, 14, for THESE THREE (’36); Brandon de Wilde, 11, for SHANE (’53); Sal Mineo, 17, for REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE (’55) and Patty McCormack, 11, for THE BAD SEED (’56).
Once Patty Duke, 16, won the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in 1963 for THE MIRACLE WORKER (’62), the honor was discontinued. Following Duke, Tatum O’Neal, 11, received the award for Best Supporting Actress for PAPER MOON (’73).
In recent years, there has been discussion about bringing the award back. In a 2017 Hollywood Reporter article, the argument was made that after the discontinuation of the award, fewer children have been recognized by the Academy. The performance of Sunny Pawar in LION (2016) wasn’t nominated, which was viewed as a snub, according to a 2017 Hollywood Reporter article. Other children haven been nominated in major categories, like Quvenzhane Wallis for BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD (2012), which to date makes her the youngest nominee for Best Actress in a Leading Role, and Jacob Tremblay in ROOM (2015). But the last time a child has won a competitive award was Anna Paquin for THE PIANO (1993).

Rock Gunfight in the Antipodes
Tumblr media
Listening today to the hot new Grown Up Wrong! comp by Sydney’s Lipstick Killers, whose lone officially released single was produced by Deniz Tek of Radio Birdman, it occurred to me that my old Music Aficionado faux faceoff between Australia’s pioneering bands of the ‘70s (all of which I dearly love) has disappeared into the online ether. It’s time to bring it back.
**********
By Chris Morris
The mid- to late ‘70s were fertile days for rock ‘n’ roll in Australia. Here and there across the vast but not terribly populous island continent, fires were started by several attitude-filled bands bent on doing things their own damn way. They all managed to make their way off the island, but if they hit the American consciousness, it was for little more than a nanosecond during their heyday.
Who were the truest Rock Wizards of Oz? For this Down Under face-off, I’ve selected three contenders: the Saints, Radio Birdman, and the Scientists. All of them had fairly slim discographies; ironically, the act probably least known in the U.S., the Scientists, recorded most prolifically, with their core line-up producing several magnificent albums and singles during a productive four-year stretch in the early ‘80s. But none of these bands ever stayed together long enough to make a deep impression among the Yanks.
So where’s the Birthday Party, you ask? There are a few things to consider. First of all, though the band and its precursor unit the Boys Next Door were in business from 1976 on, they didn’t release their first LP until 1980. Also, Nick Cave is well known enough that more (king) ink needn’t be spilled on him. Finally, I still resent the fact that Cave stole PJ Harvey away from me, so it’s personal.
On with the showdown…
HIT ME LIKE A DEATH RAY, BABY
The Saints, founded 1974 in Brisbane
The prime movers of the Saints were a pair of literal outsiders: vocalist Chris Bailey, born in Kenya to Irish parents, and guitarist Ed Kuepper, raised in Germany. Thus the otherness of their work is no surprise.
With schoolmate Ivor Hay – who over time would play drums, bass, and piano with them – the pair founded a combo originally known as Kid Galahad and the Eternals (borrowing their handle from a 1962 Elvis Presley picture), but they swiftly renamed themselves the Saints and began playing in their hometown on the northeast coast of Australia.
Listening to their records, which were made in something of a cultural vacuum, it’s difficult to get a handle on where the Saints’ distinctive, aggressive sound came from. To be sure they were aware of such homegrown precursors from the ‘60s as the Master’s Apprentices and the Missing Links (whose 1965 single they covered on their debut album). It’s safe to assume they were conversant with the Velvet Underground, the Stooges, and Lenny Kaye’s 1972 garage rock compilation Nuggets. Yet they bred something utterly their own in the ocean air of Brisbane.
With Hay on drums and Kym Bradshaw on bass, Bailey and Kuepper mounted noisy local gigs that swiftly attracted the antipathy of the local constabulary; they wound up turning their own digs into a club to play shows. In 1976, they recorded and issued a self-financed single featuring two originals, “(I’m) Stranded” and “No Time.” These dire, ferocious songs were distinguished by venomous lyrics, unprecedented velocity, and guitar playing by Kuepper that sounded like a (literal) iron curtain being attacked with a chainsaw.
The record died locally, but a copy of its U.K. issue found its way into the hands of a critic at the English music weekly Sounds, which declared it the single of the week. This accolade got the attention of EMI Records, which signed the band and financed the recording of an album, also titled I’m Stranded, in a fast two-day Brisbane session.
The album, which was ultimately released in the U.S. by Sire Records, blew the ears off anyone who heard it, and it landed with a bang in England, where punk rock was lifting off in all its fury in early 1977. It was hurtling, powerful stuff that stood apart from punk in several crucial ways: While some of the songs were clipped and demonic in the standard manner, the Saints proved they could take their time on expansive numbers like the almost Dylanesque “Messin’ With the Kid” and the sprawling, hellriding “Nights in Venice.” And one has to wonder how British p-rockers took to their perverted take on Elvis’ squishy “Kissin’ Cousins.”
Made by musicians who never considered themselves “punks,” and who in fact abhorred the label, (I’m) Stranded is nevertheless one of the definitive statements in the genre, and it has maintained its force to this day.
Settling in England for the duration, the Saints decided to throw a curveball. One could not find a more profoundly alienated album than Eternally Yours (1978), a series of yowling protests, twisted prophecies, and savage put-downs, including the snarling second version of the single “This Perfect Day.” But, though the record was loud and for the most part swift, the group applied the brakes to their sound somewhat, and a couple of songs, including the caustic album opener “Know Your Product,” were dressed by a soul-styled horn section. Punk loyalists ran for cover.
By the time Prehistoric Sounds was issued in late ’78, the dejected Bailey and Kuepper were moving in different directions, and you can hear it in the grooves. The record is slow, almost listless at times, and its logy originals are complemented by incongruous Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin covers with none of the energy of earlier Saints soul-blasts. It is an album primarily for loyalists, and by then there were few in that number.
Kuepper exited the band on the heels of the third album’s release and returned to Australia, where he enjoyed a long career as leader of the Laughing Clowns; Bailey continued to perform under the Saints mantle with a shifting lineup that at last count numbered more than 30 players over the course of 37 years
Bailey and Kuepper reunited for one-off gigs in 2001 (at the ARIA awards ceremony) and 2007 (at Australia’s Queensland Music Festival).
THERE’S GONNA BE A NEW RACE
Radio Birdman, founded 1974 in Sydney
People who toss the “punk” handle around often throw Radio Birdman into the mix, but the sextet from Australia’s Southeast Coast may be best referred as the world’s youngest proto-punk band.
Its mastermind was guitarist, songwriter, and producer Deniz Tek, a native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, who emigrated to Sydney in 1971 to study medicine. As a teen, he got a chance to witness Detroit’s most explosive pre-punk bands – the MC5, the Stooges, and the Rationals; he would later wind up collaborating with important members of all those groups.
After apprenticing with and getting bounced from a Sydney band called TV Jones, Tek formed Radio Birdman (its name a corruption of a lyric from the Stooges’ “1970”) with singer Rob Younger; the lineup ultimately solidified with the addition of guitarist (and sometime keyboardist) Chris Masuak, bassist Warwick Gilbert, drummer Ron Keeley, and (on and off and then on again) keyboardist Pip Hoyle.
Rapidly acquiring a fan base made up of some of Sydney’s lowest elements, including members of the local Hell’s Angels, Radio Birdman ultimately took over a bar, re-dubbed (in honor of the Stooges, of course) the Oxford Funhouse, as their base of operations. The band’s severe Tek-designed band logo emanated fascist-style vibes for some; at a co-billed appearance in Sydney, the Saints’ Chris Bailey remarked from the stage, “We’d like to thank the local members of Hitler Youth for their stage props.”
Despite much antipathy and some attendant violence, the band maintained a loyal local following, and in 1976 it issued a strong four-song EP, Burn My Eye, via local studio-cum-independent label Trafalgar. This was succeeded the following year by a full-length debut album, Radios Appear.
Anyone looking for something resembling punk will likely be disappointed by that collection. The band wears its all-American hard rock/proto-punk influences on its dirty sleeve. Radios Appear is dedicated to the Stooges (whose “No Fun” was the lead-off track on the Aussie issue of the LP), and a song co-written by Tek and Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton, “Hit Them Again,” was cut during sessions for the record. Tek pays deep homage to MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer with his playing, and blatantly cops a signature lick from the 5’s “Looking at You” at one juncture. The album title was lifted from a Blue Öyster Cult lyric, and the Tek-Masuak guitar-bashing bows to their multi-axe sound. Finally, in both Younger’s sometimes Morrisonian vocalizing and Hoyle’s Ray Manzarek-like ornamentation, homage to the Doors in paid in full. Given that Sydney is a beach town, there’s even a frisson of surf music in the mix.
Bursting with power-packed originals like the apocalyptic “Descent into the Maestrom,” youth-in-revolt anthem “New Race,” the cryptic, insinuating “Man with the Golden Helmet,” and Tek’s autobiographical “Murder City Nights,” Radios Appear was a power-packed set that established Radio Birdman as Oz’s leading rock light.
However, renown did not equal success in Antipodean terms. In 1978, the band cut its second album, Living Eyes, at Rockfield Studio in Wales; it was a solid effort that included remakes of three Burn My Eye numbers (including the wonderful Tek memoir “I-94,” about the Michigan interstate) and excellent new originals like “Hanging On,” “Crying Sun,” and “Alone in the End Zone.” But, with success seemingly within their grasp, Sire Records – their American label, and the Saints’ as well – switched distribution and cut their roster, leaving their new work without a home. Within months of this catastrophe, Radio Birdman disbanded.
The principals scattered, to Younger’s New Christs and Tek and Hoyle’s the Visitors; Tek, Younger, and Warwick Gilbert later joined MC5 drummer Dennis Thompson and the Stooges’ Ron Asheton in the one-off New Race. Tek also later recorded with Wayne Kramer and Scott Morgan of Ann Arbor’s Rationals in Dodge Main.
Radio Birdman’s original lineup reunited for a 1996 tour; in August 2006 – after four of the original sextet regrouped to record a potent new album, Zeno Beach – the band played its first American date ever, at Los Angeles’ Wiltern Theater. Your correspondent was there, and it was freakin’ incredible.
IN MY HEART THERE’S A PLACE CALLED SWAMPLAND
The Scientists, founded 1978 in Perth
Among the important Aussie bands of the ‘70s, the Scientists were among the first to be directly influenced by the punk explosion in New York.
As guitarist-singer-songwriter Kim Salmon – the lone constant in the Scientists’ lineup during their existence – wrote in 1975, “Reading about a far-off place called CBGB in NYC and its leather-clad denizens, all with names like Johnny Thunders, Richard Hell, and Joey Ramone, got me thinking…I immediately went searching for Punk Rock. What I found were The Modern Lovers and The New York Dolls albums.”
Salmon first dabbled in the new sound with a band bearing the delightfully punk name the Cheap Nasties. Cobbled together in Perth – the Western provincial capital of Australia – from members of such local acts as the Exterminators, the Victims, and Salmon’s the Invaders -- the early Scientists were as derivative as one might imagine. Their early songs, heard on their self-titled LP (the so-called “Pink Album”) and an early single and EP, sport original songs authored by Salmon and drummer-lyricist James Baker, the backbone of shifting Scientific crews through 1980. The tunes range from straight-up Dolls/Heartbreakers rips (“Frantic Romantic,” “Pissed On Another Planet,” “High Noon”) to buzzing romantic pop-punk in a Buzzcocks vein (“That Girl,” “She Said She Loves Me”).
Not terribly promising stuff, but, after the departure of Baker for the Hoodoo Gurus in 1981 and a brief stint in a trio called Louie Louie, Salmon assembled a new Scientists who would prevail for nearly four years. That outfit – Salmon, guitarist Tony Thewlis, bassist Boris Sujdovic, and drummer Brett Rixton – promptly relocated to Sydney and started making the noise they are noted for.
By that time, Salmon had begun cocking an ear to the Birthday Party (and no doubt paid careful attention to the sordid noise on the Melbourne group’s 1982 album Junkyard), had discovered the miasmic voodoo of the Cramps, and started grooving to the dissonant, slide guitar-dominated racket of Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band. In short order, he would also absorb the bluesy downhome assault of Los Angeles’ roots-punk outfit the Gun Club.
The Sydney-based Scientists hooked up with indie label Au Go Go, which issued a devastating run of careening, mossy records by the band in 1982-83 – the vertiginous singles “This is My Happy Hour”/“Swampland” and the corrosive “We Had Love” (backed by a faithful cover of Beefheart’s “Clear Spot”), and the heart-stopping mini-album Blood Red River, which bore the churning “Set It On Fire,” “Revhead,” and “Burnout.” Others were essaying a similar style, but the Aussie youngsters were beating their elders at their own game.
Eying the big time, the band moved to London in 1984. Some opportunities presented themselves initially: The band got European tour slots with the Gun Club and early Goth act Sisters of Mercy. But their deal with Au Go Go fell apart acrimoniously; while they made a pair of fog-bound albums, You Get What You Deserve (1985) and The Human Jukebox (1987) for Karbon Records (and a set of re-recorded songs, Weird Love, was issued in the U.S. by Big Time Records), they scraped by in Britain.
Defections from the ranks commenced in ’85, and by early 1987 the depleted Salmon used money from a housing settlement to move back to Australia, where he founded a new band, the Surrealists.
Still valued among the cognoscenti, Salmon, Thewlis, Sujdovic, and latter-day drummer Leanne Chock appeared, at the invitation of Seattle’s Mudhoney, at London’s All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival in 2006. Earlier this year, Chicago-based archival label the Numero Group issued a comprehensive four-disc box of the band’s original recordings.
So, at the end of the day, who is the all-time champeen of ‘70s Oz rock?
Scoring on points, the Saints are tops for Being Punk First with additional wins in the Pure Noise and Weltzschmerz categories, Radio Birdman takes the Technical Ability and Old-School Attitude slots, and the Scientists prevail in the Loud Young Snot and Grunge Thug division.
And the championship belt goes to…the Saints!
Of course, that could all change tomorrow, but that’s rock ‘n’ roll for ya.

Do the monegasque family have to be so attractive during a pandemic? Also could you please explain some of the main members.I know Prince Albert and his little family and Grace Kelly only.
The Kelly and Casiraghi genes are great, the family members who got them are damn lucky haha. Sure.
So you know the main royal family. Prince Albert who is 62, he became Prince of Monaco in 2005. He married Charlene Wittstock, a South African swimmer who had competed in the Olympics, in 2011. They have twins, Jacques and Gabriella, who were born in December 2014. Gabriella is older but Jacques is heir as Monaco still has male preference primogeniture.
Tumblr media
Jazmin Grimaldi: Albert’s illegitimate daughter. Jazmin was born in the US in 1992 after her mother - then a waitress - had a fling with Albert. The Prince knew about her but didn’t spend time with her until she went to Monaco for the first time aged 11. He acknowledged her publicly in 2006 after a DNA test. Since then they have become close. Jazmin regularly spends time in Monaco and speaks very fondly of him. She is close to the younger Grimaldi cousins (particularly Pauline Ducruet, she’ll be covered later) and has been to official events with both Albert and Charlene. She is a singer and is dating Ian Mellencamp, the nephew of John Cougar Mellencamp.
Alexandre Coste: Albert’s illegitimate son (on the right with Jazmin in the middle). His mother is from Togo and was an air hostess when she had a relationship with Albert that lasted several years. Alexandre was born in 2003. Again Albert knew he existed and spent time with him; he eventually publicly acknowledged him in 2005. Alexandre is a lot less public but he is still a child - he’s only 17 - and has been heavily protected because he was acknowledged at a younger age than Jazmin. His social media is private and unlike his sister he hasn’t given interviews. But Jazmin has said he also lives part time in Monaco and they get on well as a family, and he has been to family events like weddings
Tumblr media
Princess Caroline: Albert’s older sister. She is 63. As Albert took so long to marry she took on a lot of the charitable roles her mother had established - she is Chair of AMADE which was founded by Grace and Chair of the Princess Grace Foundation. She’s best known for her fashion and her relationships. She is a style icon who was close friends with Karl Lagerfeld. She’s been married three times: first to Philippe Junot from 1978 to 1980; secondly to Italian business man Stefano Casiraghi from 1983 until he died in an accident in 1990, they had three kids; and she is currently married to Prince Ernst August of Hanover. They married in 1999 and have one child but are separated; Ernst August has been seen with a few other women but for some reason they don’t formally split. EA has struggled with alcohol addiction for a long time and has been put in a medically induced coma at least twice as a result of health issues.
Tumblr media
Andrea Casiraghi, Tatiana Santo Domingo and their children Sasha, India and Maximilian (Max is not pictured above): Caroline’s oldest child, born to her and Stefano Casiraghi in 1984. He did a BA in visual arts and international politics and has worked at the Monegasque embassy to Qatar. He’s also been involved in lots of charities, including AMADE. I’m not really clear what his job is now; until the twins were born in 2014 people thought he might end up being Prince of Monaco some day so he didn’t seem to invest much in a career. He married Tatiana Santo Domingo in 2013. He and Tatiana met at school in France. She is from a wealthy Colombian family who made their money in brewing. She is a billionaire in her own right after inheriting over $1 billion from her grandfather Julio. She has her own fashion label, Muzungu Sisters, and has modelled for Dior and Emilia Wickstead with her kids. The couple have three children who are all in line to the throne: Sasha (Alexandre) born in 2012, India born in 2015 and Maximilian born in 2018. They live/lived in London
Tumblr media
Charlotte Casiraghi, Dimitri Rassam and Charlotte’s children Raphael Elmaleh and Balthazar Rasam: Caroline and Stefano’s middle child, born in 1986. Charlotte’s professional life has been group around three areas: horse riding (she has been honorary president of the Global Champions Tour and has competed in show jumping); fashion (she’s been an ambassador for Gucci and YSL and launched her own magazine focusing on sustainability) and philosophy (she has a philosophy degree from the Sorbonne and has written books about it). She had her first son, Raphael, in 2013 with her boyfriend at the time, comedian Gad Elmaleh. They split in 2015 without marrying so Raphael is not in line to the throne. In 2018 she had another son, Balthazar, with Dimitri Rassam. Dimitri is a film producer whose mother Carole Bouquet is a very well known French actress and a friend of Caroline’s. They married in 2019.
Tumblr media
Pierre Casiraghi, Beatrice Borromeo and their children Stefano and Francesco: Pierre is the youngest child of Stefano and Caroline, born in 1987. He has followed his father into business and is the majority shareholder of the construction firm founded by his father, Engeco. He’s also passionate about sailing. He recently sailed across the Atlantic with Greta Thunberg and her father so she could attend the UN Convention on Climate Change without flying. In 2015 he married Beatrice Borromeo. She is a member of the aristocratic Italian Borromeo family who have been very powerful in Italian society for at least 600 years. She is a journalist who has done extensive work on corruption and the mafia. Unlike many royals she’s an atheist, politically left wing, and has pissed off other royal houses - mainly the deposed Italian royal family - by exposing their corruption. They had son Stefano in 2017 and Francesco in 2018.
Tumblr media
Princess Alexandra: She is the only child of Caroline and Prince Ernst August and is therefore a Princess of Hanover. She was born in 1999. She is a figure skater who represented Monaco in the European Youth Olympic Festival. She is dating Ben-Sylvester Strautmann who is a German basketball player. She lived a mostly private life but has started to become more public, appearing at fashion shows and recently doing her first magazine interview
Tumblr media
Princess Stephanie: The youngest child of Rainier and Grace and Albert and Caroline’s little sister, born in 1965. She got a lot of headlines in the 1980s through her risque modelling, her music career, and her relationships (she dated Rob Lowe!) She married her bodyguard Daniel Ducruet in 1992 and they had two children before divorcing in 1996. In 1998 she had a third child with her Head of Security Jean Raymond Gottlieb. She is a patron of the annual circus festival in Monaco and earned more headline when she moved her kids to live with an elephant trainer she began dating in 2001. She married her second husband, acrobat Adans Lopez Peres, in 2003 and they divorced in 2004.
Tumblr media
Louis and Marie Ducruet (and Pancake): Louis is the oldest child of Stephanie and Daniel Ducruet, born in 1992. He did a degree in Sports Management and worked as Assistant to the VP of AS Monaco football club. In 2020 he signed on as an advisor for Nottingham Forest football club. In 2019 he married Marie Chevallier who he met as a student. She manages events for Monte Carlo Casino. They have no children but do have an adorable dog, Pancake, who I love more than any other royal
Tumblr media
Pauline Ducruet: Younger child of Stephanie and Daniel Ducruet, born in 1994. She studied at Parsons and did internships for Vogue and Louis Vuitton. She launched a gender neutral fashion line, Alter, in 2018. She was also a competitive diver who represented Monaco in the Summer Youth Olympics.
Tumblr media
Camille Gottlieb: Only child of Stephanie and Jean Raymond, born in 1998. As her parents never married she is not in line to the throne. She works in PR for a club (which one I don’t know). She is also the founder of Be Safe Monaco which is an anti drink driving charity.

Specs-Wearing Cricketers in International Cricket.
Here are we going to talk about 25 specs-wearing cricketers of the world who have played international cricket wearing glasses on the ground during the game.
Tumblr media
One of the essential established qualifications for any newcomer or well-established cricketer to be successful in the game of cricket is that he must have very strong eyesight.
In international cricket, a cricketer must have very strong eyesight to judge and understand the ball moving on up to the speed of 150 km/hs.
However, like other games, the weakening of a cricketer's eyes is not a very big problem in cricket. Many cricketers in the world have been seen wearing specs during the game for better viewing, better judgment & understanding of the line and length of the ball, which is very important.
Not only batsmen, but bowlers also use specs on the field. Some of which cricketers are to switch to contact lenses later in the span of their careers.
Here is a list of 25 glasses | specs-wearing cricketers who have played international cricket wearing specs on the playground during the game.

John Lee Hooker (August 22, 1917 – June 21, 2001) was an American blues singer, songwriter and guitarist. He was born in Mississippi, the son of a sharecropper, and rose to prominence performing an electric guitar-style adaptation of Delta blues. Hooker often incorporated other elements, including talking blues and early North Mississippi Hill country blues. He developed his own driving-rhythm boogie style, distinct from the 1930s–1940s piano-derived boogie-woogie style. Some of his best known songs include “Boogie Chillen’” (1948), “Crawling King Snake” (1949), “Dimples” (1956), “Boom Boom” (1962), and “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer” (1966) – the first being the most popular race record of 1949.
Early life
There is some debate as to the year of Hooker’s birth in Coahoma County, Mississippi, the youngest of the eleven children of William Hooker (1871–1923), a sharecropper and Baptist preacher, and Minnie Ramsey (born 1875, date of death unknown); according to his official website, he was born on August 22, 1917.
Hooker and his siblings were home-schooled. They were permitted to listen only to religious songs, with his earliest exposure being the spirituals sung in church. In 1921, his parents separated. The next year, his mother married William Moore, a blues singer who provided Hooker with his first introduction to the guitar (and whom John would later credit for his distinctive playing style). John’s stepfather was his first significant blues influence. William Moore was a local blues guitarist who learned in Shreveport, Louisiana to play a droning, one-chord blues that was strikingly different from the Delta blues of the time. Around 1923 his biological father died. At the age of 14, John Lee Hooker ran away from home, reportedly never seeing his mother or stepfather again.
Throughout the 1930s, Hooker lived in Memphis, Tennessee where he worked on Beale Street at the New Daisy Theatre and occasionally performed at house parties. He worked in factories in various cities during World War II, drifting until he found himself in Detroit in 1948 working at the Ford Motor Company. He felt right at home near the blues venues and saloons on Hastings Street, the heart of black entertainment on Detroit’s east side. In a city noted for its pianists, guitar players were scarce. Performing in Detroit clubs, his popularity grew quickly and, seeking a louder instrument than his acoustic guitar, he bought his first electric guitar.
Career
Hooker’s recording career began in 1948 when his agent placed a demo, made by Hooker, with the Bihari brothers, owners of the Modern Records label. The company initially released an up-tempo number, “Boogie Chillen’”, which became Hooker’s first hit single. Though they were not songwriters, the Biharis often purchased or claimed co-authorship of songs that appeared on their labels, thus securing songwriting royalties for themselves, in addition to their own streams of income.
Sometimes these songs were older tunes that Hooker renamed, as with B.B. King’s “Rock Me Baby”, anonymous jams “B.B.’s Boogie”, or songs by employees (bandleader Vince Weaver). The Biharis used a number of pseudonyms for songwriting credits: Jules was credited as Jules Taub; Joe as Joe Josea; and Sam as Sam Ling. One song by John Lee Hooker, “Down Child”, is solely credited toTaub, with Hooker receiving no credit. Another, “Turn Over a New Leaf” is credited to Hooker and Ling.
In 1949, Hooker was recorded performing in an informal setting for Detroit jazz enthusiasts. His repertoire included down-home and spiritual tunes that he would not record commercially. The recorded set has been made available in the album Jack O'Diamonds.
Despite being illiterate, Hooker was a prolific lyricist. In addition to adapting the occasionally traditional blues lyric (such as “if I was chief of police, I would run her right out of town…”), he freely invented many songs from scratch. Recording studios in the 1950s rarely paid black musicians more than a pittance, so Hooker would spend the night wandering from studio to studio, coming up with new songs or variations on his songs for each studio. Because of his recording contract, he would record these songs under obvious pseudonyms such as John Lee Booker, notably for Chess Records and Chance Records in 1951/52, as Johnny Lee for De Luxe Records in 1953/54 as John Lee, and even John Lee Cooker, or as Texas Slim, Delta John, Birmingham Sam and his Magic Guitar, Johnny Williams, or The Boogie Man.
His early solo songs were recorded under Bernie Besman. John Lee Hooker rarely played on a standard beat, changing tempo to fit the needs of the song. This often made it difficult to use backing musicians who were not accustomed to Hooker’s musical vagaries. As a result, Besman would record Hooker, in addition to playing guitar and singing, stomping along with the music on a wooden pallet. For much of this time period he recorded and toured with Eddie Kirkland, who was still performing until his death in a car accident in 2011. Later sessions for the VeeJay label in Chicago used studio musicians on most of his recordings, including Eddie Taylor, who could handle his musical idiosyncrasies very well. His biggest UK hit, “Boom Boom”, (originally released on VeeJay) was recorded with a horn section.
Later life
He appeared and sang in the 1980 film The Blues Brothers. Due to Hooker’s improvisational style, his performance was filmed and sound-recorded live at the scene at Chicago’s Maxwell Street Market, in contrast to the usual “playback” technique used in most film musicals. Hooker was also a direct influence in the look of John Belushi’s character Jake Blues.
In 1989, he joined with a number of musicians, including Carlos Santana and Bonnie Raitt to record the album The Healer, for which he and Santana won a Grammy Award. Hooker recorded several songs with Van Morrison, including “Never Get Out of These Blues Alive”, “The Healing Game”, and “I Cover the Waterfront”. He also appeared on stage with Van Morrison several times, some of which was released on the live album A Night in San Francisco. The same year he appeared as the title character on Pete Townshend's The Iron Man: The Musical by Pete Townshend.
On December 19, 1989, Hooker appeared with the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton to perform “Boogie Chillen’"in Atlantic City, N.J., as part of the Rolling Stones' Steel Wheels tour. The show was broadcast live on cable television on a pay-per-view basis.
Hooker recorded over 100 albums. He lived the last years of his life in Long Beach, California. In 1997, he opened a nightclub in San Francisco’s Fillmore District called John Lee Hooker’s Boom Boom Room, after one of his hits.
Death
Hooker fell ill just before a tour of Europe in 2001 and died in his sleep on June 21 at the age of 83, two months before his 84th birthday. He was interred at the Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland, California.
His last live in the studio recording on guitar and vocal was of a song he wrote with Pete Sears called "Elizebeth”, featuring members of his Coast to Coast Blues Band with Sears on piano. It was recorded on January 14, 1998 at Bayview Studios in Richmond, California. The last song Hooker recorded before his death was “Ali D'Oro”, a collaboration with the Italian soul singer Zucchero, in which Hooker sang the chorus “I lay down with an angel.” He is survived by eight children, nineteen grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, a nephew and fiance Sidora Dazi. He has two children that followed in his footsteps, Zakiya Hooker and John Lee Hooker, Jr.
Among his many awards, Hooker has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and in 1991 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Two of his songs, “Boogie Chillen” and “Boom Boom” were included in the list of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. “Boogie Chillen” was included as one of the Songs of the Century. He was also inducted in 1980 into the Blues Hall of Fame. In 2000, Hooker was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
Music and legacy
Hooker’s guitar playing is closely aligned with piano boogie-woogie. He would play the walking bass pattern with his thumb, stopping to emphasize the end of a line with a series of trills, done by rapid hammer-ons and pull-offs. The songs that most epitomize his early sound are “Boogie Chillen”, about being 17 and wanting to go out to dance at the Boogie clubs, “Baby, Please Don’t Go”, a blues standard first recorded by Big Joe Williams, and “Tupelo Blues”, a song about the flooding of Tupelo, Mississippi, in April 1936.
He maintained a solo career, popular with blues and folk music fans of the early 1960s and crossed over to white audiences, giving an early opportunity to the young Bob Dylan. As he got older, he added increasingly more people to his band, changing his live show from simply Hooker with his guitar to a large band, with Hooker singing.
His vocal phrasing was less closely tied to specific bars than most blues singers. This casual, rambling style had been gradually diminishing with the onset of electric blues bands from Chicago but, even when not playing solo, Hooker retained it in his sound.
Though Hooker lived in Detroit during most of his career, he is not associated with the Chicago-style blues prevalent in large northern cities, as much as he is with the southern rural blues styles, known as delta blues, country blues, folk blues, or front porch blues. His use of an electric guitar tied together the Delta blues with the emerging post-war electric blues.
His songs have been covered by Buddy Guy, Cream, AC/DC, ZZ Top, Led Zeppelin, Tom Jones, Bruce Springsteen, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Van Morrison, the Yardbirds, the Animals, the Doors, the White Stripes, MC5, George Thorogood, R. L. Burnside, the J. Geils Band, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, the Gories, Cat Power and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion.

Mory Kanté obituary
Singer and songwriter whose 1980s hit Yéké Yéké was Africa’s first million-selling single
Mory Kanté, who has died aged 70 from untreated health problems, was a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and one of west Africa’s most versatile and commercially successful musical pioneers.
A national hero in Guinea, Kanté came from a jali or griot family of hereditary musicians and historians, and became known as the “electric griot” for his fusion of contemporary styles with traditional west African influences. His best known song, Yéké Yéké, was recorded in 1987 and became the first African single to sell over a million copies - as well as being the first international dance floor hit to feature the kora, the ancient west African harp.
Kanté played an amplified version of the instrument, which was matched against a stomping bass line, brass, drums, and a female chorus joining in with his distinctive, high-pitched vocals for the exuberant and catchy hook line. Yéké Yéké was No 1 in the pop charts in Spain and the Netherlands, and a Top 5 hit in Germany, Switzerland and France. It made three entries in the UK charts, reaching the Top 30 in 1988 and 1995 and then again, as a remix version, in 1996. The remix appeared on the soundtrack of the Danny Boyle film The Beach (2000).
Yéké Yéké made Kanté an international celebrity, just as African music was gaining new audiences in the west thanks to the growing interest in world music. But he was already well known across west Africa as lead singer with one of the region’s finest groups, the Rail Band. And as Lucy Duran, professor of music at SOAS, University of London, put it: “He was steeped in tradition.”
He was always destined to be a musician. Born in Albadarya, south-eastern Guinea, he was one of the youngest of 38 children. His father, El Hadj Djelifodé Kanté, was a local griot leader, while his mother, Fatoumata Kamissoko, was from a distinguished Malian griot family. Mory was taught to play the balafon, the African xylophone, attended a local French school and at 15 was sent to Bamako, the Malian capital, to live with his aunt, Manamba Kamissoko, a singer and griot. Here he continued his griot education while also listening to western and Cuban music and working as balafonist, guitarist and singer for the Apollos, a band much in demand at wedding festivals.
His musical skills came to the notice of one of Bamako’s most popular and adventurous groups, the Rail Band, who were employed by the National Railways of Mali to play at the Buffet Hotel De La Gare, next to Bamako railway station, where they performed anything from Cuban-influenced songs and French pop to ancient griot songs arranged for modern instruments. Salif Keita was their star vocalist, and Kanté was hired to play the balafon and guitar – though he also taught himself to play the kora and would occasionally take the microphone to remind audiences that Salif was not the only great vocalist on stage.
In 1973, Keita quit to join a rival band, Les Ambassadeurs, and Kanté took over as lead singer. The Rail Band became celebrities across west Africa, touring in Nigeria and the Ivory Coast while expanding their musical range to include funk and Afrobeat, and recording classic songs that ranged from Soundiata, a tribute to the founder of the Mandingo empire and Sinsimba, a tribute to Fela Kuti.
After leaving the Rail Band (who had been on strike demanding their salaries as state employees), Kanté moved to Abidjan, capital of the Ivory Coast, where he found that “people were crazy for modern music on traditional instruments”. He started a small band in which he sang and played kora, backed by other traditional instruments including balafon and djembe hand drums as he reworked salsa and western dance songs.
He had a residency at a fashionable city restaurant, where he was heard by Gerard Chess, director of the American label Eboni that specialised in disco and funk. His first solo album Courougnegne was released in 1981 and mixed in Los Angeles, where he had a “dream” meeting with Stevie Wonder.
Kanté wanted international success, and in 1984 he moved to Paris, where he eventually achieved his goal. His album À Paris (1984) included an early version of Yéké Yéké, and the next, 10 Cola Nuts (1986), was co-produced by Bruce Springsteen’s original keyboard player David Sancious and was nominated for the French Victoires De la Musique award, but it was not until Akwaba Beach (1987) that he became a major star. This was the best-selling album that included the hit version of Yéké Yéké, and its success was followed by high-profile events including a concert attended by tens of thousands in Central Park, New York, on French Bastille Day, 14 July 1990.
Always smartly dressed in white, Kanté became an African crossover celebrity with the status of a rock star – though his high-energy shows often included a traditional song as a reminder of his griot roots. And having discovered a winning formula he stuck with it. His 1990 album Touma achieved gold status in France, and was followed by Nongo Village (1993), Tatebola (1996) and Tamala (Le Voyageur) (2001) which included Nin Kadi, an easy-going collaboration with the English R&B singer Shola Ama.
In 2004 Kanté dramatically changed direction with Sabou, an all-acoustic album that included no keyboards or electro-percussion but provided an impressive reminder of his instrumental skills, not just on kora but on balafon, acoustic guitar and percussion. His soaring vocals and sense of urgency made this a classic set – and it would be his last for eight years.
He had homes in both Paris and in the Guinean capital, Conakry, where he had plans for an ambitious cultural institute and had already built a studio where he recorded part of his final album La Guinéenne.
In 2019 he was “guest vocalist” on an album by Las Maravillas de Mali, celebrating the music of a Cuban-influenced Malian band from the early 1970s, and appeared at a concert with this new version of the group at the London Barbican. He was still in excellent voice – and was of course wearing white.
He is survived by his wife, Sira Kouyate, and their seven children, Kebe, Tenin, Kader, Fatim, Zeynab and Marian (twins), and Mohammed, and by children from an earlier marriage.

HN: I would have continued studying. I’m not great at studying, but my parents wanted me to study so. I didn’t have any dreams besides becoming a singer, so if I didn’t become one, I would have probably listened to what my parents wanted me to do.
Q. What do you think is the most important aspect to accomplish a dream?
HN: To have a precise goal. You need to have a specific goal to know how you will accomplish your goal. I think its important to have a plan to know how to accomplish it.
Q. Tell us something surprising about the members!
HN: Seungmin is actually quite silly haha. He has a very intelligent and wise image, but when his tension is at max, he does really silly stuff! He shouts in a loud voice, or he suddenly comes into the room and says “Aaaaah!” and leaves.
Q. If you become another member for a day, who would it be?
HN: I would want to become handsome Hyunjin, and see how the others watch him haha.
Thoughtful and the maknae loved by everyone - I.N.
Born on February 8th, 2001. Blood type A. The youngest who has the cutest smile is said by all members that there is no one sweet as him. He tends to lose things easily, and apparently, he has lost his wireless earphones 3 times.
#Tornado_of_Cuteness
HJ: He’s too cute! He’s always just cute!!
Q. What is your charming point?
IN: How my eyes droop when I smile. My long eyes are my charming point. I’m normally the youngest and loved, but when I’m on stage I don’t smile as much, so perhaps that gap might be a charming point as well? haha
Q. Anything you’re into these days?
IN: Coffee frappuccino. I’ve always liked coffee and normally drink americano, but the other day I wanted to try something new and ordered it. It was really good and I was surprised!
Q. What do you think is the most important aspect to accomplish a dream?
IN: To have fun. If you can have fun, you can be positive! If you can accomplish your dream, I think it is important to be happy.
Q. Is there any Japanese piece you like?
IN: Since I was young, I’ve always loved “Crayon Shin-chan!”
Q. If you become another member for a day, who would it be?
IN: Bang Chan hyung who has wide shoulders! He also has a lot of physical strength, so I want to know what it feels like to have wide shoulders. But, I think I enjoy being myself the most haha.
Q. What made you the most excited recently?
IN: When we were given our breaks! My home is in Busan, I look forward to going home and eating during the break. There are many good foods, and because there is the sea, it feels great too. I want to recommend Gwangalli Beach and pig gukbap!
Q. What is a Japanese word you learnt recently?
IN: 「これはなんですか?これはゼロコークです」(”What is this? This is Coke Zero”)
Q. Tell us something surprising about the members!
IN: Han hyung surprisingly doesn’t sleep a lot at night. He seems like he sleeps a lot, and its not like he doesn’t, but he’s the type to be on his phone at night and staying up late. And, Han hyung watches a lot of dramas, after Hyunjin hyung.
Q. If you weren’t a singer, what do you think you would be doing?
IN: A preschool teacher or a social worker I think.
Q. How do you switch up when you’re tired or feeling down?
IN: I don’t do anything specific, but I try to make some time to think and sort my head out on my own. I think it is best if you rest at times like that, so I make time to rest, and try to think positively as possible.
